In the 1st offseason thread, we broached several topics:
- What to do about the wide receivers?
- How many kids would be in the current recruiting class
- Prayer Request for FSUVaFan's grades after he read the wrong subject for his exam.
- Willie Downs will not quality and Mizell is unlikely as well. Greg Reid looks to be okay.
- Many More

It could have been worse.
But making the particular joke about Willie Downs that I was thinking of would have offended 100% of the people who read it, including me.

Willie has broken my heart.
I could see those starting DBs in 2011…Reed, Joyner, Downs, Payne…..

So, there is NO shot with Downs or Mizell?
When did we find this out?
Mizell has some shot (probably less than 20%)
Downs would take a serious Miracle (aka, we’d have to basically hack Godby’s computer system)
This came out Saturday night, but I didn’t get the story and out of respect for NoleInsider I waited 48 hours to relay the info.

This pisses me off...
What a waste. More non-qualifiers that the coaches spent all that recruiting time & effort on. This trend has become a serious problem in recent years. It started in the JB era, but I’m surprised & annoyed that this crap is still going on. Further, now that we only have half our staff recruiting, the time spent on each recruit is even more precious.
I understand that it happens from time to time, but are we so desperate that we’re relegated to accepting commitments from risky recruits every year?
I'd do Downs' schoolwork for free, right now. Probably Mizell's, too.
Seriously, I don’t really know how you get 18 incompletes and 3 passes (rumored) at Godby. Godby. Yes, Godby.

well someone needs to take a chance and pass this kid because
when we take chances every year on kids like this we havent been getting them.

Hey Uncensored...
You guys always do a nice job with statistical analysis on different subjects…
How about one that determines if any correlation exists between grades and athletic ability. I swear the two are inversely proportional.
So no LBs this past year… nice. I guess that’s ok since there isn’t anyone to coach them anyway.
Really not sure how I would measure that
Unless I were to host a combine for everyone who applied to Harvard.
Couple thoughts:
- Time. Everyone has limited time. Do you spend it on athletics or academics?
- Gene allocation: what are the chances you have excellent brain and brawn genes?
- Want to: if you’re great at something, do you really work to be great at something else?

There is a third option (let's call it the Preston Parker option) for time.... smoking the reefer
I see what you are saying, though. Unfortunately, these guys only needed to be great at one thing, and marginally serviceable in another.

heh... leave to the SN NorthHAZE to remember 4/20.
That does remind me.
I will be holding a candlelight vigil on Langford Green beginning at sundown.
Together, we will light candles, sing songs, and pray to God that none of our wide receivers do anything stupid today.
There are studies...
that demonstrate that students who participate in athletics do better compared to their non-athlete counterparts. Some theories think this has to do with time management, increased blood flow to the brain, increased neurohumeral response (meaning hormone and brain interaction and brain development). This theory has been proven over and over again at various levels of competition. They have also looked at the academic performance compared to amount of television time or volunteer work or participating in music. Some studies disprove the theory that sports increase academic performance, but at least from what I can tell, is that the consensus is that by playing sports you are more likely to have a higher GPA.
Now we need to look at the converse, which is your specific question…if you get good grades are you a good athlete? As FSUn mentioned, this would be difficult to measure, but I would think that there would not be a strong correlation. There are more students who do well at school and are not athletes than there are athletes who do well in school. Which initially may seem like it contradicts my first statement, but it is all about sample size and confounding variables. So sports might make you a better student than you would have been if you weren’t an athlete. But doing well in school doesn’t necessarily make you a better athlete, particularly in sports that pure strength is required. But it makes sense if you’re a bright kid, you might be able to understand sport theory and strategy at a higher level and therefore help you to excel. (Sorry rambling a bit)
There was a recent study that came out in the Journal of Sport Psychology that looked at the extra-athletic characteristics of football players in the South East Conference (SEC) and their correlation to starting status. The things they found that correlated to being a starter were the following: age, high school size, and coping with adversity, that predicted starting status 79.6% of the time.
Studies have shown that it takes about 10,000 hours or practice and participation time to develop into an elite athlete. the authors of that study defined a starting position on a D-I football team as an elite athlete. That takes about 10 years to accumulate that many hours. Most boys get really focused an committed to football in the 10-12 year old range, meaning they should reach elite status when they are 20-22, and it is closer to 22. High school size makes sense because the bigger the school the more resources that are available, the more likely you are going to specialize and not play iron man ball and get more individualized coaching and football philosophy. The coping with adversity comes from a bunch of psych studies that demonstrated the better you are at dealing with adversity the more likely you are to succeed.
I can’t get a good grasp on the relationship between academic success and athletic success. There are a number of studies that demonstrate that in certain populations that athletics are serve a social purpose and have no impact on academics, meaning drop out rates were similar between athletes and non-athletes.
Clearly, this is a huge topic, but this is a huge body of literature out there about this, particularly the correlation between sports participation and academic performance. Would be interested to hear what everyone else has to say about this. Again this is only scratching the surface and please point out anything I may have incorrectly shared.
Is this being skewed by including those grueling sports...
Chess and golf??

by Bud Elliott on Apr 20, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
You are the biggest “name” program to have offered him. If his offer list stays similar to what it has now then you have a very real chance. FSU has taken some kids from Ohio these past few years, and this is giving you some buzz with the kids. He does have some nice offers from secondary programs that are closer than Florida- Kansas, Cincinnati, Boston College, Wisconsin, etc. I don’t know if distance would be a problem with him, but I would guess not. Get him down for a visit and you have something for sure.

I think FSU should get on this guy at TE...
He has offers from all those reported schools and Bama recently threw their hat into the ring. I like him a lot. Ohio actually has 4-5 Division-1 tight ends this year. It’s kind of an odd position to have such an abnormally strong year.

Eduardo Clements has named Georgia his leader, with FSU and Miami a close second, per ESPN.
Did we jump on the train too late? That issue is strange to me, some kids don’t care who offers first or last, while others take it personally if they think you did not offer soon enough.
Thought we did too
I personally don’t care about all these DTs I keep hearing about – Barnes, Ash, McCoy – we have gotten 3 excellent DT the past 2 years and should get Willis and McCloud this year. We also have a good DT coach… this is not an area to be concerned with.

Dunno if this has been posted at all.
It seems that rivals thinks that Jacobbi Mcdaniel might go to the MLB
This smells of
a slow news day. Rivals has to keep pumping out the rumors for their paying readers regardless of the truth or actual viability. Which is why I will never pay for news (rumors). If it’s worthwile, I’ll hear about it eventually. If it’s not, then I don’t care anyway.
So the question begs. Does anyone know whether its very likely?

what are his options for getting into school eventually?
I take it since he didn’t qualify, he won’t graduate… can he get his GED, then FSU? Would he have to go to Juco?

He da next Funky Fred, bringin dat Funk back to da FSU Noles.
Kill a fly with an axe - Mickey Andrews, his 1998 playbook
I was curious about the NCAA Div. I eligibility and found this:
If you want to participate in athletics or receive an athletics
scholarship during your first year, you must:
• Graduate from high school;
• Complete these 16 core courses:
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of math (algebra 1 or higher)
- 2 years of natural or physical science (including one year of lab
science if offered by your high school)
- 1 extra year of English, math, or natural or physical science
- 2 years of social science
- 4 years of extra core courses (from any category above, or
foreign language, nondoctrinal religion or philosophy);
• Earn a minimum required grade-point average in your core
courses; and
• Earn a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches your
core-course grade-point average and test score sliding scale (for
example, a 2.400 core-course grade-point average needs an 860
SAT).
Requirement to graduate with your high school class
You must graduate from high school on schedule (in eight
semesters) with your incoming ninth-grade class. If you graduate
from high school in eight semesters with your class, you may use
one core course completed in the year after graduation (summer
or academic year) to meet NCAA Division I eligibility requirements.
You may complete the core course at a location other than the
high school from which you graduated and may initially enroll full
time at a collegiate institution at any time after completion of the
core course.

With regard to the sliding scale GPA/SAT/ACT, the lower your GPA, the higher score you need on a standardized test. If you get a 2.0 GPA, you need a 1010 SAT or an 86 ACT (looks like they’ve changed the ACT scoring since I took it). Conversely, if you get a 3.55 or above GPA, you only need a 400 SAT (wow, I didn’t know the SAT even went that low).
Based on these requirements, if FSU coaches knew that Downs had incompletes in core courses (especially 18), they should not have wasted their time IMO.
Willie is the type of talent that you take a chance on and pray.
He has Reggie Nelson/Ed Reed/Sean Taylor talent.

All the answers here
- WR? Appeal the appeal of the appeal for Surrency…maybe the ncaa will just get tired and say yes like my Mom and Dad used to. Hold secret practices with x rhodes and company. give roids (i mean even more roids) to the incoming class and pray for the best.
-how many recruits? As many as we want. Most aparently aren’t going to qualify any how.
- FSUVa? don’t worry they were all trick questions anyways.
-Willie and Mizell? Who nees rangy fast athletes with a nose for the ball?
Yeah, right!
That would put the icing on the cake!
God, I hate that woman and her commercial. She’s just too damned abrasive/annoying. Heather I can stand because she may look down upon FSU but she occasionally gives us stories/interviews we don’t get other places.

wrong she's a homer for maryland...
you did see her stories going into last year didn’t you?
Yeah, right!
I read her stories last year
And I live in the DC area, so I’m familiar with her from her time at the Post. She displays a complete lack of knowledge at times, and fails to bother to lift a finger to research at others. I assume you are talking about stories where she ranked our O-Line last and and generally cr@pped on other units. I can live with that. She doesn’t understand football well enough for me to bother caring that she doesnt think highly of our backfield. She is also highly reactionary, and places WAY too much emphasis on experience. Occasionally she is right, but when you make as many pre-season predictions as those espn writers do, eventually some of them will be right.
I said what I said about “some other writer” in reference to the recent stories about what is going on with FSU – the appeal, etc. I don’t look to her for in depth analysis about FSU, mostly because she fails to bother to even attempt to provide it. Occasionally she’ll have a decent interview worth reading, but thats about it.
She takes shots at everyone. If anything, I think she hates the ACC in general.

Your welcome for that free education you received. In other news tharinger thinks our shot at Clements is gone(Uncensored should be thrilled) thanks in large part to the coaches not going after him hard. The question now is who the hell are we going after hard, that we have a legitimate shot at? Lattimore is not coming here, so he is not the answer. That guy is just using up our resources. Just another year of going after the wrong guys(kids that show little interest) while letting the kids that really like us fall through the cracks.

He just seemed to be your run of the meal big stocky high school fullback with some quicks. Was no more impressed with him, than I was with Holloway when he was at Lincoln. He seemed to me to be an above average high school player.
I thought he put separation between himself and the defenders. Personally, I am not concerned with long runs. I want someone who never loses yards. Give me the guy with the 3.5 avg YPC over the guy with the 5.5 YPC, if the former has a better MEDIAN carry. The running game can’t be big and little. It’s all about not being negative. We have to avoid carries of less than 2 yards (including negative carries).

I was at the OSU spring game today…95,000 strong and an awesome atmosphere. Lamarcus was there and loved it. FSU is going to have to pull a rabbit out of a hat now. I really didn’t feel great about him after his FSU visit, but the OSU spring game has changed everything.
Resident Josh Freeman fan.
I really disagree with the rabbit out of a hat.
I just don’t see him leaving the South. Can’t really compare a spring game to a regular visit.
If anything, my confidence has increased a bit over the last week after hearing about his Bama and UT visits.
The thing to remember is that OSU will fade. Distance is a factor.
If anything, my confidence has increased a bit over the last week after hearing about his Bama and UT visits.
Ohio State blew those visits out of the water..from his mouth. He’s currently hanging with Travis Howard and Jaamal Berry in Columbus right now. His uncle is having a blast too.
I’m not saying it’s over, but FSU better blow him away somehow or they aren’t getting him. The pendulum has swung heavily in OSU’s favor.
Resident Josh Freeman fan.
As always, it's best to wait for the comments after the week calms down.
He’ll talk Tuesday or Wednesday and probably say OSU was great. He’s not an early entry kid and I’m not worried yet.
The other angle OSU will need to fight is the lack of competition in the Big12. It’s getting worse as a conference by my accounts, and I’m sure LJ will want to play against NFL level competition— of which the ACC and SEC produce the most.
I think OSU is a worthy adversary here, no doubt, but to think an unofficial visit in April will have something wrapped up is probably a reach.
I know it is not the popular thing right now, but I think Miami will make a big run with Joyner.
Kill a fly with an axe - Mickey Andrews, his 1998 playbook
Not sure, but I think uncle Genron is the guy in the best position to be the parent figure in his recruitment.

I think you mean the Big 10-11
Like many recruits, LJ will probably proclaim one school this week and change his mind next.
I should make this clear, I don’t mean to imply that the recruiting process is over for him or anything like that. But the real information doesn’t come from the articles processed by the sites- it comes from the things he has been saying to the people while he was at Ohio State. The players he hung out with during the night, the other recruits he chatted with, etc. There’s certainly a long way to go, but Ohio State has left an impression on him that no other school now can. Other schools can certainly leave different types of impressions, but no one can now impress him with a spring game designed to make him a member of their team. Because, to be honest, this entire spring game was built for Lamarcus Joyner. Everything was built around maximum enjoyment for him and his uncle. And it certainly worked.
Resident Josh Freeman fan.
He actually went out of his way to mentio FSU as the only equal, no?
I mean, and that happened in a buckeye specific article.
We will not know if it worked until signing day. To say anything otherwise is simply speculation.

I have a quick question on another FSU site...
What is Warchant? And who runs it?
Resident Josh Freeman fan.
Let's put it this way: The head monk is back on his Lowering Expectations 2009 Tour. And it's not even May yet.
It’s gotten that bad over there. Mind you, their analysis is garbage, so it’s to be expected. The site is nothing more than serving after serving of garnet-and-gold kool-aid for garnet-and-gold kool-aid lushes, but even still, you’d expect a rational Nole fan or two to pop up and say, “Hey, shouldn’t we be happy just to compete next year, considering a competent coaching staff is maybe 2/5 assembled?” Problem is the sheep there are only allowed to scribe the first part of that question. So they do that, and then they’re flamed by the rest of the “Tribal Council” for “being negative.” The whole thing’s as childish, petty, and homoerotic as it sounds.
The gist of the Lowering Expectations Tour’s latest stop is, give it one more year for the lofty expectations that have taken over the site’s messageboards. Problem is, since it’s become so obvious that the monks are protecting the coaches, it’s starting to sound like just another excuse from the Bowden camp, hand-delivered by Chief Gene Shortbow. It’s like, hold on a second, no longer is it, “Wait’ll next year!” Now it’s, “Wait’ll the year after next?!” Since the Warchant coverage (including this tour stop) addresses coaching NOT AT ALL, no other conclusion can be reached.
I’ll be excited about a future Florida State football season, including 2010, 2011, and 2012, when Bobby Bowden and his cronies are gone, and we bring in a competent staff that keeps us as excited in November as we are in February. And I give credit for one of the monks for posting this thought in the thread as well. Because… that’s all that really needed to be said. But it never gets said over there. This Warchant’s a bad place. I can’t imagine your Buckeyegrove is half as bad.
This Warchant’s a bad place. I can’t imagine your Buckeyegrove is half as bad.
I don’t know, I’ve never been there. I don’t think they have many subscribers. There are a few other OSU sites that are much more populat ($ and free).
What I do know is that the people in charge of WarChant are saying some very nasty things about the OSU program right now. Some obviously false things, mind you. I have no doubt this comes from the Joyner recruitment, and some apparent bad blood the people in charge feel towards outsiders.
I was just interested in seeing how those people are viewed by the FSU community.
Resident Josh Freeman fan.
If you have never been to your own rivals site, I would guess you dont subscribe to Rivals?
I dont either, however how would you be in the loop of what is going on with Paysites if you have never been there? Is this Genron, ha ha ha? 98% of things you hear or read about on pay and non pay sites is just conjecture anyway, no need to take it personally.
Defense is not the problem.
I do!
I figure you will enjoy this:

No, I know Genron, but I am certainly not Genron. He’s a good dude, though.
Anyway, I’ve been forwarded some of the things the WarChant people have said. They are kind of funny, but I just don’t understand how a “reporter” can say these things without any proof.

I guess some of us, including myself, thought since he goes to the same school as Carr, Avis and Thomas we would automatically land him. He is quoted in the Jacksonville paper as saying he “grew up a gator fan” and “Florida is the #1 college in America”(obviously not for academics considering they have one of the lowest football grad rates in the country).
I should amend my statement. I did not think he was automatically in the bag, but thought would had a great chance.
Not realizing how much his stock would sky rocket or how big of a Gator fan he was.
OK, Maybe its been discussed but how confident are you that Jimbo will take FSU back to at least being in contention for BCS bowls and national championships.
I am not sure exactly what shakes my confidence so badly but something inside me tells me that FSU may have made a mistake locking him in here.
BTW: This site is truly a sports fan dream, the analysis is logical, rational but most of all realistic.
His offense is headed in that direction.
The talent is coming back. When the coaching improves (especially on def), we’ll be back up there…
"We're not maxed out, ... The best is still ahead of us."
Bobby Bowden
I think with the right assitants he will take FSU back to being a dynasty.
" And He drank the world's sin so He could carry you in, and give you life"
BCS games? confident
Playing for a National championship more than say once a decade— I don’t see it. The factors are too far in our oppositions favor for the present and long term and they aren’t likely to change.
But… I don’t think Saban could do it either. Nor Urban.

"The factors are too far in our oppositions favor for the present and long term and they aren’t likely to change."
Bowden’s got you down, man. He’s sucked the life out of this program and this fanbase. We can be as successful as any program around us. However, it will take A LOT of work (and time).
If you’re saying, it may take one decade (defining your present and long term time frames) to get there – to erase what Bowden has done this decade – I would agree with that statement entirely. Anyone who doesn’t understand the damage Bowden has done to this program since 2001 has no clue what’s going on and has gone here at Florida State. (And there’s nothing wrong with that. Everyday it occurs to me more and more.) He has truly brought the program full circle – full credit going to an Uncensored headline at TN.
But back to the question at hand: Jimbo’s the man for the job. I posted recently: “…I have full confidence in Fisher. We have very little to judge him by as far as his abilities as a head coach. It’s easy to forget this. The potential we’ve seen in his still very limited role at FSU (he has three coaches, gang) shows in flashes of brilliance – I’m talking the class of ‘09, assembling a huge bevy of talent in the shadow of an old, tired figurehead, his posse of stooges, and the school’s NCAA scandal that [Bowden] won’t let die. I’m not a sunshine-and-roses kind of guy. We’ll be just fine with Fisher.”
The man stuck with us when he could should have bolted for head coaching jobs. He wants desperately to succeed as head coach at Florida State. Believe me, if he doesn’t get that chance at Florida State very soon, he’ll be gone. Then we’ll find ourselves in a VERY big pickle. I’m not sure what you’ve seen from Jimbo (Florida State has allowed us to see nothing) that would make you feel shaky, but I think the something inside that’s bothering you is the HCIW deal, which was nothing more than a sinister bait-and-switch that the administration pulled on a good man in an effort to keep Bowden Bowden glued to his throne. Please give Fisher a chance. I still don’t know why he’s given us one.
great post TRM
I was referring more to the money, facilities, and new found TV exposure that the ESPN deal will grant the SEC, (and more importantly, the talk on sportcenter, more highlights to promote their product, etc).

I'm curious
what’s Cameron’s screen name on here?
I’m not so sure about the “short-timer” theory. Maybe with CTC, but not with MA. There’s too much of a legacy at stake and his coaching position is under too much scrutiny. CTC can get away with slacking off, but I don’t think MA can – nor do I think that he would try.
I guess my post came off as negative towards Fisher, not my intention
You are probably right that it is what is happening inside the program, outside the normal fan’s view that is seriously crumbling my confidence that the ship is pointed in the right direction. It feels like a dark cloud hangs over this program now. It is just so discouraging how bad things have gotten. Don’t take me as a fairweather fan, nothing is farther from the truth. Its just the product on the field is so bad at times. It felt like so many times this year that we scored on a team not from our offensive prowess but due to some botched failure by their defense.
I do see glimmers of hope in Fishers style, for instance, the power running style he is implementing with Trickett. Lets face it, we no longer make teams shake in their boots when they see us come on the field. However, a power running game may just in fact instill that sort of intimidation again along with all the other parts of the offense that will hopefully be run without great efficiency.
Thanks for the detailed reply…still hoping against all hope for a good season and signs of a program rising out of the ashes of the past 7 or 8 years.
During the West Virginia scare of Christmas '07
People need to understand that he passed up on a possible head coaching position that’s almost walking distance to his mother’s house, and the opening was for 2008. No waiting required. Anything can happen, but I have a VERY strong faith in Jimbo’s dedication to the school, the program, and the city.
This is good.
Courtesy of our dear friends at ESPN.
On Florida State, “Some of my players are down there right now and they love it. I love Tallahassee, the city. It’s a lot of fun down there, especially at night, but I wont get into that. It’s great. Just Jimbo Fisher and I got a real good relationship with Coach Carter, he’s a real good guy.”
Quote from Marcus Lattimore. Funny he mentioned it being fun at night in Tally, wasn’t he in town the night, or morning, our boy Owens was arrested?
Defense is not the problem.

Sorry if this is old to everyone else, some guy on FVsports posted it and it still cracks me up everytime I see it.

Tharinger reporting Ahmad Paige of Tennessee plans to transfer.
If I remember correctly, we battled UT till the end for Paige, maybe we are back in the picture. God knows we have a MAJOR need at the WR position.
Defense is not the problem.
Some casual readers might NOT know though.
So it’s good that 1) our contributors already knew, and 2) that everyone is now informed.
I can't imagine cfb without this rule
Can you imagine if players were like free agents and switched teams at will, halfway to graduation? Like one-and-done in college basketball.
Is cfb the only sport to have this rule? Most other college sports dont and there does not seem to be a problem like you suggest.
Defense is not the problem.
I know that ...
they have the rule in hockey and basketball. Stephen Curry’s little bro is transferring from Liberty to Duke and will have to sit out next season. I’m not sure about the rest of the sports.

Do we still want this kid?
Looks like he was signed in the ‘07 class. Wasn’t that JB’s last year? Looks like he was a 4 star (Rivals & Scout, ESPN 79) speedster with some height. Did he even play at TN?
Here’s a great discussion on his recruitment from Rocky Top Talk:
Oh no I hadn't heard that.
I just know we visited him and made good impressions. Was more generally commenting that i like Godfrey a lot.
If a team puts him at QB and develops him he will be a star
The only way he doesn’t become a stud QB is if the team that gets him puts him at WR or elsewhere. He has a cannon arm and great speed, plus he’s still growing.

Ask and you shall receive.
This is via SunshinePreps, a great site. http://64.237.99.126/clips/MiamiCentral.html Scroll down and you will see Godfrey’s film. Slowly but surely, I am getting on board. Someone who has seen him play mentioned Charlie Ward, but I think he was exaggerating.
I hope this doesn’t effect Lemay for 2011, I really like him.
Is that a short joke?
If Jeffrey were 4 inches taller he’d be the number one QB, maybe player, in the country.
There's a good one of his freshman stuff on youtube

High profanity in the background music, but if you like that kind of stuff it’s an ill song.

Curious
Any idea if FSU might have any early enrollment guys in the 2010 class? I recall hearing a lot about UF and some others having guys come in early and I know we have had them (Brandon Jenkins this spring right?) as well. I know we only have a few verbals right now so its probably hard to say.
Also, any chance we land a verbal from someone anytime soon? Seems like things have gotten cold but since I keep reading that our coaches are hitting the trail pretty hard lately I was wondering if we might get one based on this. I guess I am just hoping for some good news in these times.
Surf, we could have as many as 5.
I can address this further in Wednesday’s “Wednesday open recruiting thread.” So many of these kids say they will enroll early but often I do not believe them.
I bet we get at least 2 more recruits before June.
