Everette Brown Draft Party & NFL Draft Open Thread

First things first, former FSU player and current GM of the Lions, Martin Mayhew, is taking a lot of heat for giving Matthew Stafford $41,700,000 in guaranteed money.  The salary cap increased by 3%, but Mayhew game Stafford 20% more than last year's #1 pick in guaranteed money.  I have that it is pretty dumb, but it is only $5Mil more than Matt Ryan got last year.

Here's our scouting report on FSU DE/ OLB Everette Brown.

Everette Brown is being considered by most of the 3-4 teams.  I really doubt he goes in the top 3rd of the draft (top 10ish).  He should go between picks 10 and 55 (mid 2nd round).  Some chance he could go at Pick 9  to Green Bay, who are transitioning to a 3-4 defense.  At Pick 11 Buffalo needs a defensive end but loves Aaron Maybin of PSU.  Pick 12 Denver is transitioning to a 3-4 defense, but I doubt we see him here.  Things might be interesting at pick 15 where Houston might need an olb/de rush guy.  Again with pick 18, Denver is transitioning to a 3-4 defense.  Staying local, at pick 19 Tampa Bay.  Needs another DE, but I don't think Brown is a fit because Gaines is already a WDE.  At pick 24, Atlanta  needs a defensive end, but again, they need a big defensive end since they already have the small guy in Jon Abraham.  At Pick 25  Miami needs an OLB.  This one does make some sense to me.  At Pick 26 Baltimore needs all kinds of edge rushers and they had success with fomer 'Nole Peter Boulware.  At pick 28 Buffalo needs a defensive end, might Everette go here?  At Pick 31 Arizona needs a defensive end.  Most think they go RB, but I am not sure.  After that, expect him to go in the 2nd round to one of the above listed teams or possibly to Cleveland, Carolina, or San Fran.

Whoever drafts him, we should all go to the corresponding blog for that NFL team and wish them well.  Everette is a total class act.

FWIW...

I mocked Atl signing Carr as an undrafted FA. As potent as the off was last year, we had problems in the red zone. Can you see Tony Gonzales and Greg Carr inside the 10? He’s college’s premier fade route guy (it’s all he knows, lol).

Not sure really.

I guess the question is “would he have improved if he stayed”, and if so, would that potential improvement outweigh the possibility of injury in a senior year?

by Bud Elliott on Apr 25, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have always been in favor of a player leaving early

if they have the possibility of being a 1st/2nd round pick. You never know how an extra year will help (or hurt) a player, and you hate to see someone get injured.

I personally think he made the right choice.

Agreed

Nobody would complain if one of our violinists left to go join the London symphony. Plus, Everette is such a good guy, you can’t help but root for him.

I hope he falls to 25

For the Phins to pick him up. I would be STOKED. As long as he doesn’t end up with the Patsies. It’s so hard to read where he will end up. Some say possible top 10 still, some say out of the first round. Pretty crazy.
Wherever he ends up , I wish him the best (unless the Patriots or Jets draft him….j/k I actually still root for Noles on rivals, just not their team[i.e. Leon Washington]). I know he’ll make an impact wherever he goes b/c the dudes got a great character/skill blend. Go give em’ hell EB!

Welcome, dol-phanatic!

I think EB goes somewhere between 11 and 42, which is obviously a huge range.

Potential late round picks...

How would you rate the chances of Garvin, Carr, Smith, Carter, etc of getting drafted late?

I think Garvin and Carr have the best chance, in either the 6th or 7th round. I doubt anyone drafts Carter and Smith will probably go undrafted as well.

by basbalstr101 on Apr 25, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Garvin is so bad at corner that he can’t even play as a dime corner. Not drafted and I doubt he makes a team.
Carr— 7th or free agent
Smith 7th or free agent
Carter— undrafted
Gano— maybe late 5th to 7th, possibly undrafted but I think he goes on the 2nd day.
Ingram— possibly a 7th round guy and will get a FA contract.

Verdell and Griffin undrafted.

by Bud Elliott on Apr 25, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Would Ingram stay at LB in the NFL?

Gano could potentially take up two roster spots on an NFL team, and with that in mind I think he definitely gets drafted.

by basbalstr101 on Apr 25, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ingram would be a hybrid nickel backer type

They think Gano takes way too long on his punts, but he is valuable in that if the punter got hurt, he could step in.

He will also have

to improve his kickoff ability.

Brown is bouncing all over the place

Last week he was going no later than #9 to Green Bay. I think he’ll be a first rounder.

Absolutely no way that EB drops out of the first.

If I had a morgage I would stake in on that.

Also, I believe Tony Carter, Gregg Carr both get drafted. A.Smith and G.Gano are on the cusp.

(Carr may be a 6th round pick but if not they are both 7th rounders)

I just don’t see carter. He’s fast but not especially quick, doesn’t have great instincts or technique.

No kidding.

I would be homeless.

It really surprised me. There is a definite Florida State Defensive End bias in the NFL, however, I don’t think EB fits that same mold. Esp. not with the popularity of the 3-4. He is NO Kameron Wimbley.

Predictions

Donald Brown is the best back in this class

Michael Oher to the 49ers at 10

Maclin will bust, Crabtree will not.

Heyward Bey could be a sleeper, too

He has great quickness and played in an offense where he was the main target for the D to stop

Very interesting note for draft geeks

Several teams in the top ten are willing to trade down. To date, no offers to trade up have resulted in a deal being consummated.

But the team that just spent $41 million in guaranteed money on quarterback Matthew Stafford has turned down a chance to spend another big chunk of cash.

According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, the Lions turned down an opportunity to send their second first-round pick (No. 20 overall) and the first pick in round two (No. 33) to the Chiefs for the third overall pick.

The Chiefs made the offer, and it could be proof that the draft trade chart has changed.

Under the current trade chart, there’s a sizable gap. The third pick is worth 2,200 points; No. 20 is worth 850 and No. 33 is worth 580.

That’s a gap of 770 points, which equates to the midpoint of the No. 22 and No. 23 overall picks in the draft.

And the Chiefs were willing to swallow that gap to get out of the three spot.

Well, the Nole in me would like to see Brown represent in the first round

But the Jaguar in me wants him to fall to the 2nd round

Stupid Dolphins just missed out on a great, great player.

I hope he makes the pro bowl against us with the effing Patsies….

I hate parcells so much! (Jake Long pick that I wanted last year notwithstanding)

I am pretty sure that I am the only football fan in the country that doesn't really enjoy the draft.

It’s odd considering my fondness for recruiting.

I enjoy the baseball draft much much more.

You're not the only one.

I’m not even really a fan of professional football.

Dang

I feel pretty bad for EB. Going back to last season, I thought he was a no-doubt first rounder. Whoever gets him is going to get one hell of a value.

I never thought he’d slip down far enough for the Dolphins to grab in the 1st round, and I’m even more surprised that he got passed them and is still on the board.

by zest on Apr 25, 2009 7:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He's falling really far

I really wish we had a better organization when it comes to dealing with NFL teams wanting info :( It’ll happen soon. I’m basically referring to the way in which Nick Saban was able to talk to NFL people about Andre Smith.

by Bud Elliott on Apr 25, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree with you FSUn

FWIW, my brother in law came down for our Pro day to work our guys out and he said he was disappointed in our coaches prescence. He said that he expected a lot more interaction with our coaches and was surprised that there was a huge lack there of. Compared to other schools…as you mentioned Nick Saban our coaches were just not around. Hopefully this changes in the near future.

Meh.

I don’t think EB falling to the 2nd is FSU’s fault.

by FSUjab on Apr 26, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Confusing

Granted, I haven’t really been keeping up with the draft over the last few months, but I thought Andre Smith’s stock was plummeting? How did he end up in the top 10?

Are teams just looking at EB as a one-dimensional guy here? I know the Phins need a CB, but I’m a little pissed that they passed on him. He’d be a perfect fit in the 3-4.

by zest on Apr 25, 2009 8:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Everette Brown...
Don’t know the particulars on why Brown has lasted through 39 picks, but I’ve heard rumblings that a lot of teams have placed third-round grades on him. I think that’s where the 49ers might have him, too. Of course, there has to be a team that has him in the second round.

That’s from a scout I guess.

by Bud Elliott on Apr 25, 2009 8:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ok sorry... just picked up the thread....

But apparently the First Round DO NOT WANT Everette.

I want to say my final piece on EB

It was a real privilege watching this kid grow up. He always handled himself with class, and he played his heart out. I truly believe he is going to be a gamebreaker at the next level. I also hope you peruse this site EB, bc I know the Tomahawk Nation has nothing but love for you. For what its worth, Im a huge phin fan, but when we play Carolina, I hope he gets 5 sacks everytime since we were stupid enough to not make a move to get him.

What inspired me to write this was a Tim Keown article. He can be a bit of a clown, but I happen to think he is one of the better writers on the ESPN staff.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=keown/090428

It is just a blurb, but he showed EB some love. Damn, Im gonna miss that guy.
