22-year-old Rod Owens was arrested for D.U.I. after being stopped at 4:30 Sunday morning for driving on West Tennessee street without his headlights on. Owens was taken to the Leon County Jail where his breath test showed his alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit

Owens is 22, so this is not an underage infraction. I'm not aware of any prior arrests here, and despite the emotional nature of a DUI arrest, this is not serious legal matter. On another note, the bars in Tallahassee close at 2AM, so to be double the legal limit at 4:30, Owens either was incredibly drunk at last call, or he kept the party going at another location after closing time.

I sort of expected something to happen this weekend, as it was the first time in a few weeks that Tallahassee had nice weather, and people were in town for the spring game.

Damn

Was it the same cop who pulled over Stephen Locke of the UF baseball team? Where is Bill Cervone when you need him?

Our probation only covers the actions for which we were charged.

Arrests and such aren’t a good thing for the program, but they don’t have anything to do with the NCAA probation issue. We only trigger that if we have another Cheating scandal, which is unlikely.

Well thank God we have depth at WR

Could you imagine if we didn’t have a glut at the position? We will see what the disciplinary ramifications are.

I dont know

DUI is just one of those charges you know…. You would think in Tallahassee he would have plenty of people willing to give him a ride. I am just sick of seeing these things knowing that tomorow morning before class, I’ll have 3 different Gator friends asking if I am aware of the latest addition to the police blotter.

Meh.

Tell them it’s not like he shot the President.

Due to the nature of the offense....

no. But if you are asking if the legal ramifications for a first offense DUI should be higher?? A whole ’nother question.

The law puts more penalties on self-inflicted harm (drugs) than a crime which can kill many people. DUI is dumb…..don’t do it!

Agreed. In fact, there is a fairly compelling argument to be made that the limit should be raised and the penalties raised significantly. There’s apparently no significant increase in impairment from .1 to .08.

That’s not a topic for this site really though.

I hear you.

Just throwing it out there.

IMO Yes

Would this be a big deal for your average FSU undergrad student? No. But I will make the argument every time that these kids are not your average students and should not be treated as such. Average FSU students don’t have their actions displayed on the bottom line of ESPN. With the great privileges afforded to these kids of playing football in front of millions and receiving a free education comes more responsibility. We need to start setting a precedent of higher expectations for the kids that play football here. Equality under the law and equality within our program are two different things. It may not be fair to 18 year old kids, but they had better know what they’re getting themselves into when they sign on that dotted line.

lovely.

What’s next, our ill-advised appeal results in worse sanctions?

by PeachTreeNole on Apr 5, 2009 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

Not really surprising.

As bad as it sounds, I have been waiting for something like this to happen.

Two thoughts

1. Owens is okay but he’s not exactly “impact”

2. He’s not gonna miss any PT anyway.

Time to run some stadium steps

He should do double sets for not turning his lights on. It could always be worse.

While the crime is only a misdemeanor....

everything is magified in our program now. With everything that has been happening with this team off the field (academically and otherwise), this is getting out of hand. When you consider this happend to yet ANOTHER receiver, it’s even worse. What the heck is going on with those guys? Under normal circumstances, not much would probably happen to him, maybe run some stadiums. But, something does need to be done to knock some sense into these guys. If you don’t, this will just keep happening and we can’t have that. I just don’t know what. I mean, it seems suspensions don’t even work.

by Nole-ando on Apr 6, 2009 9:04 AM EDT reply actions

Quite simply,

Dawsey is playing the role of cool guy and not friend. These wideouts aren’t out robbing folks, they are almost exclusively getting in trouble for having too much fun, getting too drunk at a club, etc.

by Bud Elliott on Apr 6, 2009 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

No, they're certainly not Fred Rouse

In the grand scheme of things, this isn’t huge. But, when you take a step back and look at everything, it is a disturbing trend IMHO. The receiving corps, I believe, has accounted for the majority of our off-field problems. That’s kind of disturbing when you realize they only make up 10% of the team. Is there one receiver that hasn’t been caught up in something this past year?

by Nole-ando on Apr 6, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

Surrency.

Oh, wait. Caught up in something. Nevermind.

"Tomahawk Taxi"

Whenever something like this happens it always reminds of a great business idea my brother and i always joke about. I currently live in Cincinnati unfortunately, home of the infamous Cincinnati “Felons”………….oh sorry Freudian slip i mean Bengals. I’m sure everyone can recall or remember hearing about all or at least some of the “extracurricular activity” that was taking place here ie DUI’s, assaults…basically anything that usually happens as a result of excessive alcohol consumption. The two of us always joked that we should quit our jobs, buy one of this big church buses, paint it orange and black and open up a Bengal Bus Service- a taxi service for Bengals players where we would escort the entire team to wherever they wanted to go for the night for a significant price of course. They obviously needed some kind of babysitter and i’d surely volunteer to get paid a hefty sum for that. Hell, maybe they’d even invite us inside to “hang out” (stare at all the wicked hot girls) at the party.

Maybe i’ll give Bobby a call and pitch my idea. Anyone have his cell #? Oh well he prob wouldnt recognize my 513 area code and ignore the call. It’s ok ill just leave a message….

If Tomahawk Taxi is already taken ( i don’t know since i dont live in Tallahassee) then we can def change it but it was the first thing that popped into my head.

by Renegade11 on Apr 6, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

The only cell # Bobby has....

is the one they keep throwing our receivers in at the Leon County jail! Scray enough…but it’s not out of the realm of possibilities

Safe Ride

They had Safe Ride back when I went there that was, effectively, a free taxi. We called it the drunk bus. You’d call them, they’d show up, you’d show them your FSU ID and they’d drive you home for free.

K-Man very funny!

If Dawsey is everybody’s buddy, why in the hell doesn’t he hand out his cell phone number and go get these dumb ba$+@^#$ before they do these things! I can hear the conversation between Parker & Dawsey now.
“Hu..hello?”
“DAWSEE! What up baby! Let’s go get some grub! This Humbolt County Blue Vein’s got me about to eat my couch cushions!”
“Parker, stay right where you are. I’m having a Gumby’s pizza sent over asap. Do you hear me? Put your keys down and wait for the damn pizza!”
“I love you man!”
Dawsey under his breath “Yeah, you gonna love tomorrow when your throwing up that pizza on the Doak steps”

I would like to see what type of program is in place to educate these guys on the dangers of stupid behavior. I think you could make a two hour long documentary about how stupid behavior has cost many a possible future NFL player his payday (or at least their free ride). I try to remember how many stupid things I did during those times and cut these guys some slack but, they are in a unique position. They need to know it. That’s why I believe any recruiting service needs to include Character in their star ratings. Fred Rouse would have been a two to three star at best.

by GonzoNole on Apr 6, 2009 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

Its just ridiculous the amount of infractions we have with WR's.

I dont understand what makes these guys think this kind of stuff isnt gonna get out.

I find it hysterical that the Google Ad for Sober College is the banner ad at the top of this story.

Sober College is described as “Not your ordinary rehab for young adults aged 17 to 26”.

I wonder if this is a message specifically for Owens.

Damn those Google people are clever.

by FrankDNole on Apr 6, 2009 12:18 PM EDT reply actions

The NCAA denied Corey too.

What a bunch of pricks, I hope we can appeal successfully.
