Hamilton gets new five-year deal
Glad he's not going to Memphis. A nice reward for a great season.

I have reservations about a long term deal for this guy, but this isn't the time nor the place.
The reason this extension p*&^#$s me off to no end is that Spetman couldn’t get the job done for almost a month with Rick Trickett, a coach whose ability no one questions.
Is everyone 100% certain Hamilton was the cause of our success last year? I mean… no doubt at all?
Good thing Spetman worked really hard on this extension. \sarcasm

Ill be honest,
I do give him the credit. If Im goin to give him the blame, its a two way street. He got the collection of talent together. Good or bad, he is our guy. I personally much prefer being relevant and maddeningly inconsistent then “FSwho” you know…

We all have our opinions about Coach Hamilton...but we have to recognize that there is more to college coaching than what we see on television.
Hamilton has turned this program around. He has recruited top talent. He has developed NBA level talent. All of this has happened at a school that was never known for basketball playing in the elite division in college basketball. His players enjoy playing for him. He recruits like none of us ever expected. And…believe it or not…he has a 100% graduation rate under his tenure. I like this move and we should take the fact that Memphis was interested as a compliment. It might also help in recruiting. I agree that maybe some of the football coaches should have been tied up a little sooner but I’ll defer to FSUn on those topics as he is the expert in that arena.

Coach Hamilton
I like Coach Hamilton. My only concern is the rhythms of a game seem to elude him at times. Maybe I’m missing something, but the team goes cold for too long, time outs aren’t called to break opposing momentum things just seem to lapse. That said he is a great recruiter and he does graduate his players and his players respect him in ways I wish the football team respected their coaches. Ultimately I’m glad to have him back and I hope he finishes his career with FSU.
But I’d like to see a strong bench coach next to him so he doesn’t become the Lefty Driesell of Tallahassee.

Here is some information about our current bench coaches from a previous post
I was asked the following question:
Let’s cut to the chase: TC, how confident are you (really now) that there will be an effort to bring in this mysterious offensive assistant coach that everyone’s dreaming about?
Given this year’s success, it is unlikely that there will be any changes to the core group.
The coaches are:
Stan Jones: Associate Head Coach. Has been with the program for 7 years and is Hamilton’s buddy in recruiting. Jones started college coaching career under Hamilton at Miami and coached with Hamilton when he went to the Wizards. Stan has a great understanding of the game and I like his perspective that I have seen during interviews.
Corey Wiliams: Assistant Head Coach. Has been with the program for 2 years and has recruiter associated with everything he has done. He played for Hamilton when he Coached at Oklahoma St. He also played for the Chicago Bulls when they won their third championship.
Andy Enfield: Assistant Head Coach. Has been with the program since 2006. He is currently labeled as our offensive coach and works a lot with our players on shooting technique. He is the one credited with our teams success at the free throw line. He previously was an assistant with the Boston Celtics under Rick Pitino. He has been hired by many NBA teams as a consultant and coaches at many clinics across the world. My interpretation of all of this is that he is a great individual coach but not effective at creating an offensive system. Maybe this is why we see so much one on one play from our team?
Given the ties that Jones and Williams have with Hamilton, it is unlikely that either of them moves. Enfield has the reputation as refining individual talent and shooting ability and is recognized as an oustanding recruiter. All of Hamilton’s assistants are labeled as recruiters and directly correlates with our success in that area.
Do I think there will be any additions or changes? Probably not. I feel that there will be the attitude of don’t rock the boat. But, at least for now things seem to be working in the "big picture." Whether we all agree with that or not is a different discussion.

I think the verdict is still out...
i have my doubts about Hamilton’s effectiveness but i’m going to wait to pass judgement until next year when he doesn’t have a Toney Douglas, or an Al Thorton to save the day. He has a tremendous amount of raw talent with an incedible amount of potential going into next year which i think any coach would be thrilled to have at their fingertips. But who cares if you can recruit if you are unable to utilize that potential and develop that talent. I love that we have athletes but all that shows is that an individual has the tools to become great but it’s up to the coach to mold those athletes into a basketball team.
Perfect example is Alabi. Look at the guy…physically he has the god given gifts to potentially be an All American given the right coach and system. But he has a ton of room for growth. He needs to gain 20-25 lbs of muscle, continue to develop his mid range jump shot, learn to play “bigger” on the blocks etc. Hamilton has his work cut out for him but a good coach would be able to deliver.

Hamilton does develop talent:

The loss of Toney will be huge. I only hope that the team doesn’t expect a single player to fill that role. They all need to collectively improve. We may see a slight slip next year. When this freshman class are Juniors, watch out this is going to be an outstanding team.
Alabi will get there and I totally agree that he could be a 1st team All American if he develops the way we hope he can. This is only his third full season of organized basketball (Two in High School and One in college, he barely played his freshman year)
Hamilton certainly has the players with which to develop a phenomenal basketball team and keep it at a high level.

TEAM is ultimately the key word here.
i’m with you when you said you hope the team doesn’t expect a single player to fill that role.
