Im not going to say hes bad but 240 is a little small for our O-line isnt it.
I guess it would be what kinda fram does he have. Hope he could add at least 25lb at least. Is it coley that wants us to have him or does Trickett and or Jimbo want him too. Thats all I would need to know. I trust in Trickett. "Can he do it, Yes he can"
My bad I thought you were talking about an OT
Looks like a good strong guy dont think we could get 50lb on him though. He seems to have a good eye though. Can find the ball and read plays. For a DT thats good because he sees pass or run and reacts well to get to the ball or QB. Would be a great guy vs the screens. Doesnt seem to be fast but looks strong. In this there are teams just not blocking this guy.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
I did notice
that he had an eye for the ball and did just fine in reading some of those plays. My concern is, will he be able to put on weight/muscle to clog up some holes on the DL?
He's being recruited by Coley and O'dell.
Haggins loves him at DT and believes that he can put on the necessary +30 lbs to play effectively at the 3tech. From watching his film, he has elite high D1 calibre initial technique and burst; the two most important things a 3 tech DT needs.
So would you agree with Haggins then?
Get a guy who knows how to play regardless of whether he weighs 250 or 350?
It's specific to the position
I want our DTs (3 technique linemen) to play no less than 275 and no more than 290, unless they can maintain a greater weight without losing that initial burst and agility that’s so important for that position’s efficacy.
I want our NTs (1 technique linemen) to play at around ~305. We had Everett Dawkins playing there at 263, and given the job of the 1 tech NT (sustain 2 linemen and take them out of the play without being driven back 5 yards), 263 lbs is way too light.
My point was that I don't like anyone that is over 330 (ala Jose Jose and Antwan Lowery from last year).

Pahokee
I like the fact that we’ve offered several prospects out of Pahokee and stand a good chance at signing them come Feb., 2010.
He looks like a really good player.
I hope we land him.
Another surprise
I had never heard of this one either and probably wouldn’t have if I did not read this site.
The guy is 6-4 that is taller than most of our defensive tackles now. It is not like he has to start his first year on campus. He can always begin at defensive end and work up to defensive tackle.
Coley
He couldn’t get all those Pahokee players when he was at FIU but he is reeling them in now. I would like to hear more about this one.
Why do we need this?
Not every Pahokee kid is FSU material.

My point was that I feel like we already have enough DT high on our list

Who do you think is better than Ash on our list. We might take 7 - 8 DL this year, 8 depending on if we oversign or not.
Kill a fly with an axe - Mickey Andrews, his 1998 playbook
That would be great.
We need 7 or 8, but I don’t know if we can pull that many. Maybe we can pick up a few sleeper 2 stars for depth purposes.
Demonte McAllister
He weighed 250 pounds when they offered him. Not every high schooler is going to be a Marvin Austin, who we missed out on, and weigh in at 6-0, 302 lbs.
And Demonte is expected to check in at ~275 lbs
And, FWIW, ESPN has weighed Richard Ash in at 263 lbs as of today.
He has an entire summer, senior year, and summer to put on weight from there. Expecting him to come in at ~280 is not that much of a stretch, considering how much athletically active men grow from 17 to 18. And, were he to come in at that weight, he’d be perfectly suited for his likely destination (3 technique DT).
I’m partial to Muck, and Pahokee in particular, kids. If I had my way, I’d like FSU to sign DJ Johnson, Richard Ash, Antonio Ford, Merrill Noel, and Fred Pickett this year.
You cannot underestimate their drive, determination, work ethic, and speed and agility.
this is the most important statement i saw in this whole post
“You cannot underestimate their drive, determination, work ethic, and speed and agility”
Kids with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. I’ll take any day of the week. All we need now, is to get coaches who can develop our players. Then we will be back on top for a change.
This is probably Pahokee's top prospect...
Talented DT are so tough to find (WR’s are a dime a dozen), and Ash certainly has the makings of a future NFL player. He’s a legit 6’3" and weighed 263 at the NIKE Camp last week. He is very light on his feet, and the video of him doing agility drills at the NIKE Camp (stupid ESPN make me take it down!!) is what USC liked the most. There is serious USC interest and I think they offer him after spring ball is over in May.
A kid that agile at 263 is great, but Ash will add a bunch more weight. You can just see the kid jumping to 290 with ease once in college. He does play too high right now, but that’s not because he’s stiff, just poor technique.
I feel for teamate Antonio Ford (6’3" 255). Same body as Ash, but got limited tick at DT after an ankle injury. He also missed the NIKE Camp so that didn’t help. I think he’s could be a big time DT as well, just hasn’t quite landed some of the big time offers that Ash has of yet.
Who would ever think a college could fill their DT need for a class at Pahokee HS alone!!
It'll by my personal campaign
to convince FSU, and more specifically James Coley and Jimbo Fisher, to do whatever it takes to bring them both to Tally.
But it wouldn’t fill our DT needs. We’ll have only 3(!) DTs on roster in 2010 and only 4(!) total defensive ends. FSU looks to sign six defensive linemen this cycle, most likely 4 tackles and 2 ends. We look good for Brandon Willis out of Byrnes HS in SC; and most think that we take Jr-Early Enrollee-Juco transfer-Anthony McCloud (the top DT in Georgia his HS senior year) if he makes it through academically.
Nothing would please me more than to bring along Ash and Ford for those two remaining slots. They’d be in the thick of the competition from day one; but wouldn’t be obligated to play before they’d have the chance to put on good weight and strength.
FSUn made a good point in one of our conversations today. He stated that he loves to bring in cadres of talented athletes from the same school because they can act as a mutual support system. They don’t go into the fire (and Tally can be just that) alone; it’s more likely that they stay out of trouble. They’re more familiar with their teammates; they have people with whom they can directly compete.
I’m all for going out and trying to sign the 5 players from arguably the best program in the state in 2010. De’Joshua Johnson, Fred Pickett, Merrill Noel, and the two aforementioned DTs immediately fill positions of need with that legendary muck work ethic and athletic ability.
Besides Pahokee, we’re in the process of doing the same thing with two of the best programs on the east coast outside of Florida. From Byrnes, if all things go according to plan (keep in mind this is recruiting so who knows) we’ll have 5 players on our squad from there, as well (Everett Dawkins, Justin Bright, Marcus Lattimore, Brandon Willis, and Corey Miller).
And from Lowndes HS in Valdosta, it’s just as prolific: Greg Reid, Gerald Demps, Telvin Smith, and Ed Christian.
Support systems. Competition. Familiarity. Very Talented prospects from schools with proven coaching and development pedigree. I love what the staff is doing if this is their direction. Plus, the added bonus, since we’ve three cadres of talented players from prideful programs, metacompetition between groups: the Pahokee kids aren’t gonna let the Lowndes kids get the better of them; and nor will the Byrnes kid back down from either.
Just make sure to lock down Tally when it blooms every 2.5 years, sprinkle in a healthy dose of Dade, and a smidgen from Tampa and J-Ville; and we’ll be able to compete for championships more often than not.

Where would you rank Ash compared to some of the other DTs we are after this year
I’m thinking he’s behind Cummings (commit), McCloud, Brandon Willis (could be a DE or DT) and Tavaris Barnes. So if he came would we be able to get all 5 then? Plus we look good at DE for Corey Miller and DE/LB in Telvin Smith (hope he is a LB personally) and DE David Perry (based on a previous Wednesday Recruiting Thread Post). Would we have room for 8 DL this year? This year looks really strong at DL, and I’d be for so called “extra” signings if they are the ‘right’ ones.
I haven’t even included guys like Louis Nix (long shot to turn) or Lynden Trail (longshot to get away from Miami) or have room for someone who may emerge as a HS SR that may not be known right now.
I think it was posted in the other thread, but we might oversign this year. 28 or so.
It’s becoming very clear that some players will not be asked to return.
Kill a fly with an axe - Mickey Andrews, his 1998 playbook
Great post.
I like your idea about bringing in a bunch of guys from one team. However, let me throw this out there for discussion’s sake: what about the negative side of bringing in too many guys from one team? Will they form a clique and cause devisiveness? What about when one of the guys gets playing time and the others don’t? Would the familiarity promote competition or an entitlement attitude?
I think that is where strong coaches come into the fold
A strong coach will lay it down right off the bat that playing time is earned. They will pull for one another, but at the same time, dont think for one minute they will want someone out there who is helping the team win. That mindset will be instilled in them by a coach who doesnt make you take a nap during a speech.
I am so PUMPED after reading that
The program is headed in the right direction man….we just need that spark, and its going to be like a wildfire. I love baseball, and am enjoying it, but FSU football is my first love now, and I cant wait for it to start back up….
I would like more than half the class to 3/4 to be from Florida. The rest from the Southeast, with a few national kids sprinkled in.
Lock down Tally, more than a healthy dose of SoFla (some kids want to get out, ie Joyner), and Dawsey is on Tampa and Jax, so we are good there. Plus lock up our 5 star legacies (Christian Green).
Kill a fly with an axe - Mickey Andrews, his 1998 playbook
I think mileage might be more appropriate
Since we are so close to Georgia (FSU specifically) I would be happy if we were getting the studs with a 200 mile radius(or whatever wouldnt be an outlandish number), along with the rest of Florida as you said.
We discuss this idea often and I have to say I totally agree.
You did forget one program, however: Jacksonville First Coast. Thomas, Carr, Commack, and possibly Barnes this year.

Seems to me that the talent there
has dropped off a bit the last couple years. Am I wrong?
I never liked Lincoin
but they were in our conf. in high school. godby seemed to be better back then though.

USC is the important name is this recruitment.
He has an offer from Tennessee (Monte) too. Florida (another key one) is about to pull the trigger.
Kill a fly with an axe - Mickey Andrews, his 1998 playbook
it sucks because all UF and USC have to do is ask these days.
“Son we go after the best of the best only. We get our pick of the litter and you are it. BLA BLA BLA”
What are our chances when teams like this get into the mix
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
I'll add that September 27 will be a great day for Florida State.
DJ, Ash, Noel, Pickett, and possibly Ford.

Just to backup what I think would happen, even though if comes from our Rivals;
UF did this with Lakeland in 2007. They signed:
SS Ahmad Black
OL Mark Pouncy
OL Mike Pouncy
RB Chris Rainey
DB Steve Wilks
WR Paul Wilson
NT John Brown
All from Lakeland in. Seven players! Now, granted, there was some serious natural talent in that group, but there’s no doubt that the familiarity, reflexively-motivated sense of pride in their school, the community-effect to win, and intra-competition made everyone better. Ahmad has started for the last 1.5 years on arguably the best secondary in the Country; the Pouncy’s have started since their freshman years on an SEC OL, Chris Rainey put up like 550 yards rushing in his freshman season last year, and Wilson / Wilkes have provided quality depth for competition during practice.
The other key aspect of bringing in groups of players from the same school is the mutual support system. We FSU fans know the Pouncey’s attitude issues and sense of entitlement all too well; we know Chris Rainey’s propensity for getting paid. There’s little doubt in my mind that had any of those three gone to a different school, those issues would have bubbled over into suspensions. Even John Brown, who was kicked off becuase he has a serious and legitimate learning disorder, was kept eligible and miraculously qualified to begin with.
And, at Miami in 2008, from Miami Northwestern:
NT Marcus Fortson
QB Jacory Harris
WR Aldarius Johnson
OL Benjamin Jones
LB Sean Spence
WR Tommy Streeter
WR Kendall Thompkins (may not resign after Juco, though)
OL Brandon Washington
and from Booker T Washington:
WR Therion Collier
CB Brandon Harris
WR Davon Johnson
With those two classes, Miami effectively made it a birthright to go from the two best programs in Dade country to da U. Something we plan to do with the best program in SC, Byrnes; the best program in southern Georgia, Lowndes; and maybe the best program in the state of Florida; Pahokee.
If Miami is to have success this year or the next, it will undoubtedly come from those two cadres of players. A legitimate argument can be made that by 2010, no less than 8 will be starting, and all should receive major playing time in some capacity. Not a single player from either group has got into any trouble, an amazing thing considering these are elevated kids in South Beach.
This is excellent support for your theory.
And the biggest thing for our program is keeping each other out of trouble. Although Shannon doesn’t have the best record down there at UM, he certainly has kept a tight rein on those guys.
Ya because Kendall and Kenbrell are not even close to the same name... :)
It gets even tricker because Kenbrell graduated HS in ’06 and Kendall in ’08 yet this year was the first year of college for both.
Jeffrey Godfrey
WE NEED TO PUT THE FULL COURT PRESS ON HIM. HE IS ONE OF THE TOP 5 PROSPECTS THAT WE HAVE A SHOT AT – HE IS VERY UNDERRATED.
I needed to put that in all caps because people keep overlooking this guy. He is the best QB prospect that we have a shot at this year – lazer arm and great speed. Height means very little. He is going to be a difference maker wherever he goes.
http://today.sportingnews.com/sportingnewstoday/20081229/?pg=2
2010 QB Christian Lemay
With this recent offer (Jeffrey Godfrey), what are our chances with Lemay in 2010 if we sign a decent QB? The class predictions for 2009 lacks a quality QB. Not sure who we’d sign in 2009 but I think Jimbo will recruit Lemay like he did EJ Manuel. Heard somewhere that Lemay has connections to Gainesville and Tally. I also heard that he wants to play for Jimbo (any truth to that)?
You're a year off

Meant 2011
Just not sure we’ll land a quality QB in this class. If we don’t, Lemay will be Jimbo’s #1 priority for 2011. If we sign a quality QB in 2010, it could hurt our chances with Lemay. Anyone have the inside scoop about Lemay?
I'd rather have Godfrey than Lemay so we might as well go after him hard

?
What makes you think we have a good shot at landing him? 5’11"? Same height as our walk on, Eddinger. He (Godfrey) might have skills but considering I was at the spring game, something wasn’t right with Eddinger behind center. He looked like the smallest guy on the field, wearing an oversized jersey. Maybe Godfrey will grow another couple inches.
I don't think we have that good of a shot but I think we should try

Godfrey is pretty undersized at this point. If he doesn't grow we won't be taking him as a QB.
The last i heard he wasn’t even 6 feet.

Ehhh... doubt it
He looked about as tall as Bert Reed. He looked extremely funny behind those 6-5 players.
