Wednesday Open Recruiting Thread 06.10.09

**Good Mixed Highlight Film Added** @ 3PM Eastern

It's Wednesday and that means we talk recruiting.  Let's get to it.

As always, we funnel everything to the:

2010 Big Board

Current Commits:

  • ESPNU 150 Watch List OL Ed Christian
  • ESPNU 150 Watch List  DL Darius Cummings
  • ESPNU 150 Watch List Safety Chad Abrams

Unless I am missing something, FSU is not taking scrubs or even marginally talented guys.  Florida State is going after very talented kids who fit what the Noles want to run.  Recruiting is a talent collection contest, but more importantly it is a contest of "who can collect the most talent that fits their system" contest.  FSU is doing that.  The Noles still look primed to pull in a top 10 and probably a top 5 class.

Today inside:

  • FREE Film on two prospects we haven't discussed
  • A recap of the players removed from the 2010 Big Board
  • A recap of the players added to the 2010 Big Board
  • Some Notes on new offers
  • and of course, our question of the day!

Star-divide

We had been behind in the board upkeep over the past few weeks, but our editors have been revising, reshuffling, re-ordering and adding details to make this your central source for FSU recruiting.  Scouting reports have been added for some players, as well as more film.  Don't be afraid to ask us any questions you might have about players, order, etc.

Removed:

  • Malik Stokes, PA QB.  FSU hasn't shown much interest and he isn't likely to be a QB at the next level.
  • Kyle Smith, PA QB.  Northeastern battle.
  • Terrance Broadway, QB/ ATH.  Seems to be a Bama-LSU battle, and he's not a QB.  Plenty of athletes his quality in Florida.
  • Jacoby Walker, QB, Tx.  Interest seems to have waned.
  • James Louis, wr/db, named a top 5 and FSU isn't in it
  • Brion Carnes, QB, no interest
  • Hosey Adams, RB
  • Raymond Sanders, RB
  • Nicholas Parker, RB
  • Tuswani Copeland, ath, no interest
  • Alex Welch, TE, committed to ND
  • DeMarcus Milliner, committed to Alabama
  • Richard Ash, who is going to UF and has told everyone.
  • Chaz Green, OL, no interest.  Has named a top 3 of Florida, Tennessee, and USC. I'm pretty confident he ends up in Gainesville.
  • Jazz King, WR
  • Anthony Creecy, WR
  • Kenbrell Thompkins, WR
  • Jawara White, LB, commit to Auburn
  • Davis Feder, Corvelle Harrison, Jamal Christopher, all are LBs
  • Garry Peters, CB, no interest
  • Jeremy Davis, CB, committed to Miami.  Good player with character issues.
  • Chris Waiters, Nickell Robey, Nick Jones, DeAndre Hopkins, Dontre Morris, all DBs.
  • Tuswani Copeland, ATH

Added (or will be added today):

  • Pernell Williams, CB
  • Davis Dudchok, TE
  • Damien Jacobs, DT
  • Elliot Porter, DT
  • Jeremy Deering, ATH, impressive film.  More later.
  • Mark Wilson, LB, Lincoln High School.
  • Dan Schneider
  • Neil Basford
  • Darion Hall, RB.  DO NOT WANT.  Major character issues.  Does not fit our system.  Will commit to Miami soon thankfully.
  • Loganville, GA OL Morgan Bailey
  • Woodstock, GA, OL Reid Webster
  • Jarrett Darmstatter, TE, New Jersey or somewhere up north.

Notes:

  • FSU offered Damien Jacobs, DT from Gray, Louisiana.  He is 6'3 300.  Some rumors going around that he had 50 TFL last year.  Cannot confirm.  Did have 8 sacks and 90 tackles.  Very quick for a 300 pounder, impressive film on Rivals.
  • Another name for 2011, RB Mike Bellamy from Charlotte High (SWFL) area.  Was the state 200M champion as a sophomore.  Gator lean?  Apparently a UGA coach improperly contacted him in front of several other schools.
  • If Tight End Neil Basford gets a UF offer, it's over, but that's unlikely.  He will likely be a Seminole very soon.
  • Brandon Gainer's official stats against Glades Central:   23 carries for 226 yards and 3 TD's.  FSUncensored hears that he is showing more explosion this year.  Perfect for our offense.
  • Mark Wilson, LB from Lincoln, good size for a junior, and he is a HUGE fan.  Some say he might not be FSU quality.  FSUStateOfMind thinks he is a backup plan in case Luc and Moore don't work out.
  • Jeffrey Godfrey was 18 of 26 for 305 yards, 2 TD (1 pass, 1 rush) and 3 INT's in his spring game.  I think that we take him and go all out for Lemay and Bridgewater next year.
  • Corey Miller and Brandon Willis ripped it up at the Tennessee lineman camp this past week.  Those two are very important prospects for us and FSU looks somewhere between good and great for both.
  • Soflafootball top 100 and Elite Scouting Services top 100 [insert links]
  • Florida State has officially offered St. Thomas Aquinas CB Keion Payne.  This is an offer Seminole fans have been clamoring for.  FSUStateOfMind thinks he is Miami bound.
  • Josh Reese is the clear third of the Miami Central Trio (Gainer, Godfrey).  I do not expect FSU to take him without getting Gainer and Godfrey.

Film:

MixTape of Lattimore, Green, Haggins, Gainer, Godfrey, and Joyner (Caution- sound of probably NSFW)

Corey Lemonier (DE, 6'4 225, Hialeah HS, Miami, FL):

The #1 rated player in Florida per ESS.  I disagree, but think he is top three.  Some think we have a legit shot, I am not so sure.  If we win ten and Miami goes 5-7 again (not likely), then I believe we will get him.  This would be the pull of the century.  Him and Miller in the class....... wow.  This is sick film.

Jeremy Deering (6'2 200 4.5, Leto HS, Tampa, FL):

We have offered and are recruiting him as a WR.  FSUStateOfMind would like this kid in our class, as the fourth wide receiver.  If we want him, we will have to stay on him.  Ohio State has verbally offered.  Really runs hard and through tacklers.  Kind of deceptive speed.

That's RB recruit Eduardo Clements discussing his upcoming season and his potential schools.  UGA is gunning hard for him, but we will see what happens.  No need to panic as of yet.  A big thanks to FrankD for providing us with some South Florida info!

Remember that there will be a ton of prospects at the July 18th Seminole Showtime camp.  Come watch the future 'Noles compete!

Question of the Day:

What is your zip code?

That's it.  It's simple.  What zip code do you reside in during the football season?  I will not publish this information, but rather want to see who lives close to prominent prospects FSU is in the process of recruiting.

Payne

So now that we have all but lost a shot at him we have offered? That stinks. I read his cousin is Major Wright, and also UF is starting to look pretty hard at Payne. I think we missed out early on with Payne and created this loss.

As for the zipcode….30102. I’m not too far from Woodstock Ga.

We have to offer who we feel comfortable offering.

Keion didn’t have a ton of film to view, and FSU is not going to offer someone based solely on running a 40. There are plenty of good defensive backs in this class for whom the Noles look great.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I understand that.

I don’t think we should offer based on any particlur stat. I do feel that we never should have verbaled an offer and told him he would get a written (if that indeed was the case as Payne stated) and then waited this long to get it to him. There hasn’t been a big increase in film on him either…especially game film. So unless his practices have been so dominating that no offense can get any yardage, why the offer now? Is it because he has gotten so much attention from others and we realized we may have botched this? Obviously I don’t know all the details, but from the articles I have seen it doesn’t look like we handled this in the best manner. Maybe it’s just my opinion.

Go Noles!!!

Other input matters as well

He hasn’t produced more game film, but we have been able to talk to more people who see him on a daily basis. I for one, do not buy this idea that he would have committed to FSU on the spot had we offered. It could be true, but I hadn’t heard that- only read it.

There will always be a kid most think we should have offered earlier. Every class has one.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Maturity level also

Besides, if this kid supposedly would have committed on the spot but somehow got his feelings hurt because we did not then it seems we may have a maturity issue with him as well. If some company that I was dying to work with were to say an offer is coming but it took a while to get me that offer, do I refuse solely based on the time it took to get that offer. Some of these kids need to be told that while they are taking their time and deciding on which school to attend, the same is being done with schools as they evaluate talent.

by diablonole on Jun 10, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I understand your thoughts diablo, but these are kids. FSU was high on his list, we showed early interest and verbaled and stated an offer was on the way. It has taken over a month for that to show up, and in the meantime he has gotten atleast 6 offers from D1 schools and is getting looks from UF. Look at it from his view. And being these kids age you can’t expect there to NOT be some maturity concerns.

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

All true.

Nolefan07, I agree with everything you say, these are kids and I forget sometimes. I just wish that this wasn’t such a dog and pony show with these offers and commitments.

by diablonole on Jun 10, 2009 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I am totally in agreement with you.

They have made commiting into a circus show. It would be great to make it where once you commit it is over no backing out no BullS***ing. All the games that are played are a joke, and signing day makes me want to vomit with all the stupid shows they pull.

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

At 17-18 years old...

You can get caught up in the moment and commit w/o thinking. Most of these guys won’t play in the NFL, they need that cooling off time to figure out where they should go. I want FSU to get every recruit we want too, but these kids lives are affected by this, give them a break…

Other DB's

Which other DB’s besides Mitchell and Joyner do you see us looking great for? And Joyner is by no means a sure thing especially if we only win the 7.7 games your win % analysis showed. Anything less than 9 wins and A very good showing at the ACCCG would probably bust us with Joyner.

I am looking for straight up cover corners. Not safetys or guys that will likely move to safety.

My opinions from what I have read/observed.
CB’s/Stars/Interest/Chances:

-Lamarcus Joyner***** High, Very good chance if we do our job and win 9+ and ACCCG. Very Good

-Terrence Mitchell**** High, Best shot, being recruited hard by Dawsey & Fisher, wins won’t hurt, UGA possibly could steal him. Very Good

-Tony Grimes**** No interest as we have not offered. Has great film and is a hitter.
Bama/UGA likely. Slim

-Demar Dorsey*** Listed as no interest in FSU. Also has some rumored character concerns. Possible

-Cody Riggs**** Medium, Not gonna happen. Small guy, likely at ND or UF. Slim

-Merril Noel*** Medium, Expect Wake to get him but UF is making a push. Possible

-Ricardo Allen*** Medium, Clemson or Wake Forest unless we push it. Little info on him. Possible

-Terrence Brooks*** Medium, UF’s to lose, but haven’t offered yet. Seems legit, and under rated. Good

-Keion Payne*** Medium, Was high on FSU, has family ties to UM & UF. UM is leading and UF is starting to look hard at him. Slim

-Travis Bell* Medium, Film is lackluster to say the least. Very Possible

-Jeremy Wilkes* Medium, We are his only offer, haven’t seen film on him at all. Very Possible

Thoughts?

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I think we look good for

Joyner, Mitchell, and Brooks.

We’re looking to take 2 or 3 corners and one safety.

UF cannot take 8 defensive backs. They will not take Riggs, Noel, Brooks, Dorsey, and Coleman in addition to the 3 they already have.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

To wit,

2010 Player commits12 commits
NAME POS HT WT SCHOOL RANK GRADE STATUS NOTES
Demar Dorsey S 6-1 180 Boyd Anderson H.S. (FL) Verbal
Jonathan Dowling S 6-3 180 Southeast H.S. (FL) Verbal
Jaylen Watkins ATH 6-0 171 Cape Coral H.S. (FL) Verbal
Victor Hampton CB 5-10 167 Independence H.S. (NC) 78 Verbal
Jordan Haden S 5-11 195 Friendly Senior H.S. (MD) 78 Verbal

POSSIBLE DB
Matt Elam ATH 6-0 205 Dwyer H.S. (FL) Verbal

So they have 5 or 6 DB’s already. There is no way they take 4 more without dropping someone.

Everyone wants to play for UF, heck even Abrams (our commit) recently called them his dream school, but the reality is that some have to play for other schools.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I wonder who doesn't make the cut

They can’t possibly take that many alone for that position with the youth they have there now. Maybe they are looking to move some of those guys to WR? That is crazy recruiting for a spot that is talent rich now.

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Dorsey has interest in us.

Unlikey to qualify and major characters concerns there though.

I would pass on him for FSU

We don’t need anymore drama…..

Just reading between the lines

He seems like a Vol to me. Now I’m just speculating as I don’t have access to any premium info, but from the moment he seemed to be dissatisfied with the way UF was recruiting him and the position (as mentioned above, they seem to be leading for 15 top guys at CB/S) and he started to mention other schools incl. FSU, at that point he seemed like a Vol to me.

Payne is not worthy of a FSU offfer

Man this kid doesnt have a ton of filmm b/c he hasnt nothing in 3 years of Vasity football. The only reason he got the offer is b/c of LJ. Thats it. Payne cant play at an elite or you kidding me. It’s highligh film is laughable. I remember last yr in the dolphins 7 on 7 camp LJ bombed him 3 times in a ROW..man that kid ends up going to overrated ass STA and buddies up with LJ, plays against no Wr’s all spring but some skinny soph and picks up 3 major offers…Not check this out. When LJ went to WR during spring pracrtice Payne did not want to stick him at all, not one damn time. Cody Riggs didnt care they went head to head. I sold Payne out, he’s not a tough. Put in like this.. payne is 6’0 160…Ask anybody who is bigger in body structure in person Payne or LJ. Payne is not physical. man whatever, i told Cooley that was a dumb offer but only b/c the both wanted to go to FSU together and act crazy but those two are not even close now.

by genron187 on Jun 10, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

yeap

He’s a soft and not physical. those guys look good in combines. Just look at it, he played varsity football at Dilliard HS for two years and no one never heard of him until he transferred to STA and on top of that with all the good teams they play yr in and yr out you telling me he only has 4 good clips of highlights..an 11 game starter who suppose to be an elite corner only has what? You see im not a tee shirt and panties, i look at the film, forget practices and nike camps. i look at What does he do with that gear on b/c thats what your going to get

by genron187 on Jun 10, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

This is why I will be interested to see what ESPN rates him.

ESPN seems to focus more on game tape rather than highlight film.

Any chance teams were just throwing away from Payne?

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Really????

That is crappy news on several fronts. So Genron since LJ has been nearly all WR so far is that due to a lack of WR at STA as compared to DB, or did LJ just want to play more WR? I read LJ ate Riggs lunch all day, but the article came across as the two had challenged each other and LJ won out obviously. So Payne had an opportunity to cover LJ and he backed away? That is weak if that is the case. I would really like to see some film on him now so I can better assess my opinions of him. There is just such limited info on him other than personal reviews.

Gen do you think LJ will want to play WR or DB more in colleg or will he want to play both sides?

Cough Cough we have openings in both spots Cough Cough

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Why Genron187?

Genron187 or should I call you Coach Drummond? Tell me, why would you try to dog and discredit Payne? What’s the deal with that? What has he done to you? It seams as though you have an issue!! Ok, so you say that he does have a ton of film? Maybe it’s because his former school didn’t give him the footage? Then you say that he only received an offer because of LJ? How shallow are you to stoop slow low to say that?? If that were the case, then why didn’t he receive the offer two months ago? Also, tell us why you think his film is laughable? The sad part is…other coaches are viewing the same film as you and I’m sure if they felt it was "laughable", they wouldn’t be offering. You go on to say that Payne didn’t want to stick him during spring practice? How in the Heck would you know when you are supposed to be at Northwestern High spring practice (aren’t you a coach)? Then you have the nerve to call STA overrated?? Why? Why? Why? You’re such a FAKE!! I sure as hell hope Coley isn’t taking any advise from you!! You are one DUMB A***!! I’ve read a lot of message boards and I have never read comments so calloused at yours. By the way, aren’t you an Educator for Dade County Schools? If so, I’m glad that my children aren’t in your class!! Your grammar is awful!! Since you know so much, why aren’t you a head coach or better yet coaching at the Collegiate Level? You are an effing LOSER!!

by creeper07 on Jun 10, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

dang

I mean if you want to call that doggin or discredt someone go ahead, i dont agree. Im just pointing some my opinion. You say STA is not overrated…Do they have a QB? last i checked They only completed 2 or 3 passes in their spring game. What about Wr’s??? STA is good but not like lasy yr. Cooley said they didnt offer Payne b/c of his film…You adorable son, i was there at FSU and UGA and where ever else when we sat and watched his film son. u just dont know do you. And i did coach college ball for a yr b4 i moved back home to hang with my dad in his last yrs. So if u know my name, u should know my track record. So either your talkin out of you butt or out of some emotional love towards Payne, i understand.

by genron187 on Jun 10, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Curious

If The QB sucksat STA ( I have no clue bout it), why would LJ be willing to go WR instead of straight up DB and show his skills at the position where he is best suited? Seems odd LJ would put himself in a spot that would garner less attention to me.

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

STA is loaded at DB.

Riggs, Robinson, Payne, and and someone else I’m forgetting at the moment, are all high D1 recruits. I expect LJ to get reps on defense during the season, but you’d have to talk to genron about that.

by FSUSOM on Jun 10, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I was just curious after reading SoFLa articles....

From Luke S.

Joyner – He is getting all these high rankings for being a CB at the next level, yet no one has seen him play CB on an island by himself in a game. He struggled at the Tampa 7-on-7, Green, Tapley, and then some kid from south Dade beat him deep (2x for the unknown from south Dade, 1 was severely underthrown). So there are some questions about him being a CB.

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he is an excellent DB

I just wonder if it hurts his game playing WR with what apparently is a lackluster QB throwing his direction. If he is going to be a straight up DB I would prefer him play DB his senior year so he doesn’t lose a step or wind up stuck in a WR/DB role where he is unsure what he wants to play.

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

At a program like STA,

can he really dictate where he plays? I never played HS ball, but I would assume he can’t exactly tell the coaches that he wants to be a pure DB. I’m with you too, for the record.

Just wants to beat the Gators

by DA-2 on Jun 10, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't think so

I would hope that a coach would put the best player at the position they are most likely to succeed at. I could be wrong, and maybe STA does things differently. I would play LJ at CB if that is his best and he is better than the others and move one of the lesser guys to WR. Just my thoughts.

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Jun 10, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Just speculation on my part

but STA may also be trying to help the others guys who have been there for 4 years get as many offers/opportunities as possible. Especially so b/c LJ already has the entire country after him which will only help attract scouts/coaches to their games and will give the other players chances to shine at their strongest position even if their eg. aren’t a better CB than LJ.

They can also help showcase some Jrs and Sophs to have those same coaches back for the next year and the year after that to keep the cycle going so that they can continue to get the top players to want to play there b/c they know that going to STA will help you go to the best CFB programs – similar to what colleges offer: “come to FSU and we’ll make you the best player you can be and give you the best chance to a) make the NFL and b) succeed long term in the NFL”

by RishiM on Jun 11, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Ehhhh maybe but,

Keion Payne transferred there this year also from Dillard I believe and he is in a starting CB spot so that kinda rules out that arguement.

Genron’s the dude with the info on this situation. He’s as close as can be to it . I just hear some things about the situation occasionally, and Luke S. has some issue with LJ as a player buy that seems to be exacerbated by some personal bias. He’s really the only “scout” in Florida who isn’t blown away by LJ.

Yeap. Miami Jackson, we’re turning that thing around. They postponed the dolphins 7 on 7 but we are two games from winning it. But i hate 7 on 7’s anyway, not real football. We have a prospect Rashard Stewart that they really, he’s #1 you can check him out on the spring game highlights. If he impresses at the FSU camp he will get an offer. kid can run a low 4.4. They want for a FS spot if anything

I love these recruiting threads, they really help me follow the guys we are really after. As for zip code, I am actually from Woodstock, GA (30189) and I can tell Reid is a very good fit for our system.

You really think FSU could pull a top 10 or top 5 recruiting class even with all of the negative recruiting and negative publicity lately? I’d love to see it. We definelty need to at least match last season to show we’re headed in the rigth direction.

Also is there any place with more info about the Showtime camp (time, location, what’s it all about)? I’m in Tallahassee, but I can’t find much about it other than Coley constantly plugging it on his Twitter. From what I gather the recruits practice and former FSU stars stand around and mingle. That doesn’t sound too thrilling, but I have nothing else to do and I guess it might help show the recruits we are big football supporters here.

I dont how they are doing it, but what that are selling is striking a cord with a ton of players. Its just like 2008 when Da U was selling to kids that they can bring the prestige of Miami back and make it a power once again and many players was feeling that. FSU is saying the same things. I think most of the 2009 class is going to get a ton of PT and the 2010 have a ton of players who should play from day one. if i grew up a FSU fan and that was spit to me i would be excited

Showtime

From what I have read/hear, Showtime basically has many former FSU greats come out and they split up into groups. The pros give the young guys tips and pointers. They run drills etc. It is basically a practice where FSU can showcase these talented players to the kids and wow them. As far as any other details, I have no clue being here in GA now.

I went to Seminole Showtime last year...

and I thought it was a cool environment! There was music blasting and Deckerhoff’s voice would occasionally blast over the loud speaker: “Warrick Dunn to the 30-20-10-TOUUUCHDOWN”. There were a lot of current and former Noles there and I thought overall it was pretty cool. You should give it a go for sure.

Nick Jones Byrnes

Dropped off the list. Is he a fairly good player, or just doesn’t fit our system I am guessing based on size and position. RB/WR. Seems like there was a lot of hype about him last year.

Gotcha

So how are we looking with our top LB recruits? I’ve seen a lot of guys we offered that have gone elsewhere but I am guessing they were backups for our primary targets if they fell through. What’s the scoop on (Mark Wilson, LB, Lincoln High School)? What is your feeling with Luc? Is there any other LB’s out there that we may not be looking at that we should be? Or one that really impresses you?

I’m at work for 7 more hours so I am football surfing if you can’t tell…..

How close do you think LJ has gotten with his new teammates at STA?

With Cody Riggs saying he has no clear leader anymore, FSU is the only school at the top of Joyner, Payne, and Riggs’s list. Does playing together at the next level mean anything to this group?

nope

LJ doesnt care about playing ball with his teammates in college. IF signing day was today, FSU would have a top 5 class imo. but good they dont b/c i dont think that would include LJ, but i think after 3 days of camp and then the showtime…well see

Dunkley really wants to play with LJ.

Dunkley told me he wants to go to a team thats running a prototype offense and one thats going to be sucessful. To be honest, its two good prospect that will follow LJ depending on if he ccommits early. I know for a fact if LJ commits early to FSU there are atleast 5 prospects off the top of my head who are going to commit right after (depending on FSU showing)

FSUn, as you know I've only recently started following recruiting thanks to TN.

In the past, I only cared how the “so called experts” rated our signing class after NSD, and I always thought that the recruiting gods always got us most of the recruits that we really wanted anyway. In following and by trying to keep up with what you guys at TN are reporting to us, I now realize that, "No Virginia, there is no recruiting Santa Claus", and recruiting is a year round work in progress.

I do know Div 1 teams are allowed 85 scholarship players. I realize we are going to lose a couple for the next couple of years due to our recent indiscretions. But for the sake of simplicity lets use the 85 number.

Here are some of the issues about recruiting that I don’t entirely understand.

How many offers (written and verbal) do we give, or are allowed to give?
If we give a verbal, are we bound ethically (probably not legally) to give a written?
How do we know the number of offers that will be accepted?
When does the coaching staff stop offering?
What happens if we have more offers accepted than slots available?
Is this a correct statement. A player who is redshirted, is still on a scholarship, but does not count toward the 85 limit. If so, how many redshirts can a team have?
If a player is injured and out for the year, how is he accounted for?
These are just a few and I have more questions, but….

Instead of answering my questions here, might you consider doing some type of write up for those of us less informed but willing to learn, if you think it might be worthy of being a “featured” type article on TN. If not, how about directing me to a source where I can learn and get this information for myself. I know it would make for interesting and educational reading for me, and other readers might also enjoy it. Kinda like “THE A, B, C’s OF RECRUITING” or in my case “RECRUITING FOR DUMMIES”.

This is just something I thought might be interesting to some of the others as well, and it will give you and/or FSUStateOfMind something to do with all the spare time you guys have on your hands. If you do not think it worthy of your time and space required on TN, then at your leisure if you could at least answer some of these questions to hold me over, I would be appreciative.

I’ve always believed in asking what may seem like a silly question of those more knowledgeable than myself in order learn something new, rather than continue to wonder in my own blissful ignorance.

by FrankDNole on Jun 10, 2009 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

It's pretty simple
How many offers (written and verbal) do we give, or are allowed to give?

Unlimited. Totally unregulated.

If we give a verbal, are we bound ethically (probably not legally) to give a written?

No, not even with a written.

How do we know the number of offers that will be accepted?

You don’t. We know how many kids we want at each position. If we meet our limit, we let the remaining lesser desired kids know to look elsewhere.

When does the coaching staff stop offering?

When he has offered everyone who he wants to, honestly. They do offer in waves to gauge the impact of the newly sent offers.

What happens if we have more offers accepted than slots available?

They can’t “accept” until signing day, so we let them know if they are not going to fit in the class.

Is this a correct statement. A player who is redshirted, is still on a scholarship, but does not count toward the 85 limit. If so, how many redshirts can a team have? If a player is injured and out for the year, how is he accounted for?

No. Redshirting is related to the player’s individual eligibility calender, not the scholarship limit. Ditto injuries.

These weren’t silly at all. Lots of people have them.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks, I guess I was overthinking the whole process.

By “accepted” I meant committed, which I understand is non-binding and the recruit can de-commit at any time, but how often does it happen where one will commit to us for example, then later be told he doesn’t fit into our plans and to look elsewhere because we got someone better or we are maxed out. It sounds like the whole signing day could turn into a crapshoot unless the coaches keep a real good line of communication open with the kid, which I am sure is probably the case at least with your top prospects.

>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em

by FrankDNole on Jun 10, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll use an older example

in 2004, Kenny O’Neal got on board real late. We then were over the number of WRs we wanted to take as well as being over the 25 limit and 85 limit (or at least we thought we were going to be). At that point Greg Carr had already agreed to come in as a Greyshirt (enrol in Dec/Jan rather than the fall), but we had David Grimes also committed at the time. We asked him to Greyshirt as well but he didn’t want to wait so we let him re-open his recruitment and he ended up at MSU (who he had de-committed from to commit to us). The same class we also as DE Roberson to GS but he to wanted to start his college experience in the fall so he ended up at GT.

LOL..not sure if you were trying..

But you messed it up again. Ohio State has a song- Round on the End, High in the Middle.

A really catchy tune, too.

Round on the End and High in the Middle

Old man Biddle gave me a riddle just the other day,
I guessed it right away, I am glad to say,
The riddle he gave to me, I will give to you—,
And if you think you’re smart like me, Let’s see what you can do.

Chorus

(It’s) Round on the end and “Hi” in the middle.
Tell me if you know.
Don’t you think that’s a cute little riddle
Round on the end and “Hi” in the middle
You can find it on the map if you look high and low.
The O’s are round, it’s high in the middle. O-H-I-O That’s the riddle!
Round on the end and “Hi” in the middle.
O-HI-O!

Pa and mother, my great big brother couldn’t guess it right,
Tho’ they tried with all their might, Just the other night,
I’ve got the riddle down by heart, And I ain’t no fool,
I’m goin’ teach this riddle too, To all the kids at school.

So from what I can gather...

We’re doing well on our goals for WR. We’re looking good for RBs. LB are ok. What we need to be concerned about are our CB? We got Greg Reid from last year, but unless we get LJ, we probably won’t have an elite CB opposite Reid. And with the way things are going, there won’t be much depth at CB?

Options

I would like 4 CB’s in this class….LJ, Mitchell, Payne(until I see he is not as good as advertised, too many D1 coaches with positive comments atm), Grimes/Brooks in that order. Our secondary has been eaten alive the past few years, although you can contribute much of that to other position concerns.

WR I don’t see an issue with atm. Christian Green, DJ Johnson, Kenny Shaw. If we could rope in Dunkley I would flip out. Add to that if we end up with LJ he can easily split time at WR.

LB’s we need to get 2-3 top notch guys. This may be an issue as time goes by. There isn’t a huge group of top talent this year and there isn’t many locks at this point. If we get Christian Jones, Telvin Smith we are ok, but I want Jeff Luc. Has there been any more news on CJ Mizzel? I keep hearing different stories….some saying he might make it in others saying no fn chance. Any word?

DL’s as many as we can get but get some good ones please. Bigger/faster/stronger guys…Brandon Willis, Darius Cummings, Corey Miller. 2-3 more

OL’s a few better than 2-3 stars would great. Although you can’t deny the work Trickett has done with the lesser known recruits. I am a huge Datko fan. I can’t recall a lineman that played as hard as him. I love seeing a RB or WR score and one of the first guys to get to him to bear hug/pat him on the back is always Datko. Hell of a TEAM player. Chaz Green, Ed Christian, 2 more would be nice.

Safety- I am happy, even ecstatic with Abrams. I look for great things from him and if we got downs back that would be icing on the cake. I wouldn’t mind one more as a backup and I like Tommie Saunders from Texas.

QB eh Im happy where we are, but if we take Jeff Godfrey my feelings wouldn’t be hurt, and go big in 2011 Lemay all day.

TE it would be nice to finally get a guy who was used actively in the position. I am hoping Reliford will make that move. I personally would rather not use a scholly on a TE this year, but we have been tossing them all over.

RB’s I think we are pretty talent loaded atm but a few spares never hurt. Marcus Lattimore, Eduardo Clements, Brandon Gainer, Giovanni Bernard. Gainer. Bernard/Lattimore, Clements in that order. Atleast 2 of them 3 would be oh so sweet.

Go Noles!!!

I spoke with someone close to Leon football recently and we don’t want him. It was not by chance that he was pulled over and his car was searched. I think it would take a miracle, along the line of Fred Rouse, for him to academically qualify.

Got a question fool

check this out, I’ve been wondering about this and askng various coaches their take. What is the difference between a great player who is 5’9 and a great player who is 6’0? I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this but i cant. I scrolled through the college and NFL of Fame to try and get a prototype player by averaging heights and weights and get numbers like LB’s avg. Ht-5’10 1/2 wt-202. I dont see a difference based on measurables. Do you? Thats my problem with that Luke S. dude. He says players are overrated and always has dissed LJ, Eduardo C., and any so called short prospect. Well let me ask someone this, have we ever in recent history of the US overrate a short player??? Never. I’ve never seen a so called smaller player overrated. I have seen big guys overrated based on their size. Look at Delvin Jones, this guys comes out of no where and does our camp and gets intitial Rivals and scout top 100.. with 20 offers without a backgroud check or film..but he’s 6’6. Does height make a player, seriously. Im being for real. Who thinks Arthur Brown is better than Sean Spence? anybody. Just a question, looking for a noles opinion

by genron187 on Jun 10, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

Doesn't make any difference, especially when you have the arms of a 6'0 man.

Honestly, LJ is the best DB prospect I’ve seen since I’ve followed recruiting.

by FSUSOM on Jun 10, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Arthur Brown

I’d take talent from South Florida over a recruit from the midwest. Arthur came in as a 5 star and hasn’t accomplished much. Thats probably why Bryce ended up at UT and not with his brother. Chances are a 3 or 4 star RB from the 305 would keep Bryce on the bench.

And no, height does not always make a player. But being 6’6", does draw a lot of attention. Thats why our coaches study film, if available. Not every player fits their mold and in their system.

by CSI Nole on Jun 10, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll bite

Height does matter because you have to be even better if you’re shorter. You make a mistake at 6’2 and you have the reach to recover. Make a mistake at 5’8… and it’s a touchdown.

I don’t care what height a kid is if he can play, but if he is very short for his position, I will be skeptical until I see him play.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

but

what if the kid can play i.e. Jeff Demps. Coach Burrows at DA U said he and the staff are still kicking themselves for not taking that guy when he wanted to commit to them early last yr and finish his recruting.. Just look at the ballin Lb’s FSU has had over the past couple of years…those guys are not 6’1 230. They are 5 foot i dont care I gonna knock your head off and make plays. i love those guys

Who’s better Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, or Plaxico B…..if you had to pick one who you take?

by genron187 on Jun 10, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends on my offense

but the point is if you can play, you will get noticed, no matter the height.

WIth all the 7-7 camps, combines, travel teams, etc., if the player makes the effort he will get noticed.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 10, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess the argument would be what if Jeff Demps was four inches taller and 35 pounds heavier? He would be even better, right? Maybe UF could even use him as a true running back if he was a little bit thicker.

But I think Demps is a bad example because of the position he plays. It’s impossible to be an everydown back when you’re that small.

LJ won’t have that problem because his skills translate to defensive back/slot receiver/kick returner, but guys at other positions run into that trouble all the time.

by gahnki on Jun 10, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

They said the

same thing about Emmit Smith..willie parker..Jones Drew…And that concept of an every down back is gone. NO RB plays every down any more. In college or NFL. We are in the age of packages and match-ups

by genron187 on Jun 11, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

There’s a big difference between Emmit Smith, Willie Parker, and Jones-Drew’s size and Demps size, though.

by gahnki on Jun 11, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Top 10 Class

I am surprised some of you would doubt FSU could pull in a top ten class. According ro Rival anyway we had the number 7 class and were ahead of UF. However they only recruited 16 players and we had 21 and their players were rated slightlly higher than our class.

If FSU pulled in a class like this coming off the Drew XLee nightmare season I see no reason why we should not coast to a top ten class after this season. Another thing that will help us is BB and crew are closer to leaving.

by DocHoliday2 on Jun 10, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

Remember Doc

Out of that class that was top 7 and ahead of UF….two 4-star players didn’t make it to the team. One likely never will, and the other is questionable at best. So where would that drop our class in the rankings losing those guys? Has to be out of the top 10 in my opinion.
