Monday Morning Tomahawks 06.10.09
First things first, I did a radio appearace today on 910AM The Dream for the Mike Davis Show, which is based out of Valdosta. We talked South Georgia Football and discussed FSU's renewed recruiting interest in the area as well as a bit of Florida State. Have a listen: 06.10.09 Interview on the Mike Davis Show (didn't get the full clip recorded). I was a bit nervous having only done one other appearance, but it was just like talking on the phone with someone. A big thanks to Mike! I'll have the link he wants us to use for his live streaming show as soon as they get the streaming rigged up.
Baseball
The Milwaukee Brewers selected D'Vontrey Richardson in the fifth round with the 166th overall pick in the MLB Draft. I have no inside knowledge here, but I would expect him to go pro. The St. Louis Cardinals selected FSU second baseman Jason Stidham with the 249th overall selection in the eighth round.
Meanwhile, FSU signee, pitcher Keyvious Sampson was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 4th round, No. 114 overall. This kid can touch 95 on the radar gun and our MattDNole alerted me that Sampson says he will be going to FSU, not the majors. Sampson got up in front of family and friends assembled at O'Malley's Alley and announced he was definitely going to Florida State University. This is good for at least two fist pumps. After that, Milwaukee Brewers selected FSU signee, shortstop 'Scooter' Gennett from Sarasota (FL) High School in the 16th round, 406th overall and the Texas Rangers selected Florida State Signee, third baseman David 'Jayce' Boyd from Tate High School in the 19th round, 574th overall.
FOOTBALL Updates Inside (a good crop today- UPDATED W/ VIDEO!)
Florida State Football Summer Conditioning (Seminoles.com) Shirtless photos... if that's your thing.
After Ponder talks, there's video of the guys running around. It's a very good video and we can see who is getting bigger and working hard. Who can you spot??
Seminoles.com WR Preview This is the best one yet. They have two good and informative interviews and a good photo gallery. We actually learn something: Reed has moved to the X, Carr's old spot, and Fortson to the Z (Parker's Position).
Miami Dolphins 7-on-7 | soflafootball.com The Miami Dolphins Academy 7-on-7 took place in Plantation Tuesday and featured plenty of talented prospects from South Florida. I am intrigued by Greg Dent as a corner.
I told you guys about this a while ago, but now it is getting more national coverage. Alabama, elite teams using experienced coaches as graduate assts to skirt coach limit. - Andy Staples - SI.com Nick Saban hired former UVA off. coordinator Mike Groh as a graduate assistant. Critics worry elite teams are expanding their braintrusts by exploiting a loophole. Proponents like Saban insist the NCAA can't prevent a hire from earning a living.
Seminole linebacker Watson back to full strength | tallahassee.com | Tallahassee Democrat Count Christian Ponder among the impressed. Also, updates on Spurlock, Thacker, Easterling, and Pressley.
Should the Seminoles be ranked in the top 15? Steve Ellis blogs it up.
Panthers rookie Brown off to impressive start | CharlotteObserver.com Everette Brown's ability to become an impact player in the NFL depends largely on his ability to match up well against much bigger blockers. So far, he is doing well.
FSU's '08 recruiting class will be looked upon to help this year | tallahassee.com | Tallahassee Democrat Jeff Bowden's farewell class has been a colossal failure, so Jimbo's first class must step up.

I'll believe Sampson...
when he is on campus after the August signing deadline.
Interesting that Sampson opted not to use an agent...
I wonder if that affected his draft status. Maybe an agent would have been able to schmooze someone into taking him in the late 1st round.
If that's the case
why don’t more baseball prospects represent themselves? That article stated that Sampson was likely the only unrepresented prospect.
Also of note
D’Vo selected in the 5th round. I’m guessing that means he’ll be back. Any ideas or rumors on this?
I say he's long gone.
You can still get tons of money in the 5th ($155,000 – $350,000, roughly). Baseball is a tools game. DVO has all the tools.
Also....
the 5th round is pretty high for him based on his performance this season. He has nothing left to prove, in my eyes.
Good points
Though I don’t know if $155-$350k is “tons of money” to a guy with athletic ability like D’Vo.
I would not be surprised to see Stidham also leave, although
he would probably be better served staying another year, and hopefully he will.
Does anyone have any inside knowledge on what his thinking might be?
You gotta remember that this is what these guys dream about.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
Your estimates of what D'Vo can expect as the 166th pick is pretty dead on,
and I think with his lack of playing time, $200k sounds about right. The 150th to 175th picks for the last couple of years have been between $140k to $700k (with exceptions of course), but the higher amounts usually only go to pitchers. Usually the amount is based on production in HS and college, but what the club thinks of your potential plays a huge factor, and as you pointed out D’VO has good potential and may possibly make it to the show in a few years, if all goes well and under the right circumstances. There is really no reason for him to stick around another year, especially football wise.
There is a huge drop off in dollars after the 1st round and the whole structure is pretty screwed up. If I remember correctly, Buster Posey was the 5th pick last year and got around a $7.5 mil, while the first pick whose name escapes me only got $6 mil and change. Of course Posey was special and his contract was the highest ever for a amateur and a record breaking deal if my memory is accurate.

He'll take the 200K, put away 25K for a final 2 years of schooling if he doesn't make it big, and start learning how hit a curveball.
Dvo's personality
Is he the type to be fully prepared for his future like this? Can he play in the minors for a while and then play non-baseball sports at FSU if he can’t hack it?
Also, how was he good enough to be drafted but not start for FSU? I guess Milwaukee considers him worth the time/money investment.

It's all about tools...
D’Vo has them. Minor league coaches are paid to develop talent.
He was just too raw to be an everyday guy here. Didn’t help his case that football caused him to miss fall practices and grades cost him a year of baseball. Still takes bad routes on fly balls, can’t handle breaking stuff, and for all the speed he has is not a good base runner. In the minors, he is going to get to play everyday in an instructional environment. He’s going to the AB’s and innings in the field he needs.
Everyone knew he was a prospect and probably would have been drafted just as high if he didn’t play this year. Jake Locker went in the 10th round and never suited up on the diamond for the Huskies.
Best of luck to him. I really think he has a chance to make it to the show if his bat comes around.
I for one will miss DVo
For some reason, one can only guess, Martin and fans have issues with 2 sport athletes not named Deion(once in a lifetime athlete).
Defense is not the problem.
Thats because you take an above
average athlete and marginalize his ability in their respective “best” (for lack of a better word) sports by consuming time that could be devoted to growing, learning and developing rapport with your teammates.
