Phillips via media.commercialappeal.com

As you've probably heard, there's a rumor that freshman 4* offensive guard Aubrey Phillips went home yesterday afternoon.  I spoke with someone with knowledge of the situation and they indicated that Aubrey left the team, but also indicated that it's not unheard of for a homesick player to take some time for himself before the start of two-a-days.  As of right now, the finality of this absence is unclear.  If Aubrey wants to come back within a reasonable time, FSU will welcome him back.  It's important to note that this isn't a Rick Trickett casualty- Trickett isn't allowed to work with these guys yet (though he is enormously demanding once he starts to work with them come August).  I hope that Aubrey comes back.

I updated the Eligibility-Roster-Tracker to relflect his departure.  FSU only has 74 guys on scholarship right now.  Crazy stuff.

FSU ARTICLES

ACC - ESPN
But it's not surprising to learn Paterno has taken this stance. After all, he's just like Bowden -- too far removed from everything to strike any fear into the hearts of his players.

Tallahassee Convention and Visitor's Bureau and ISP Team with Hotel Association to Make Florida State Home Games More Affordable - FLORIDA STATE OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
The Tallahassee Convention and Visitor's Bureau has joined with ISP and Seminole Sports Marketing to work with local hotels and attractions to lower home game weekend rates and in many cases eliminate the two-night minimum common in previous seasons. Michelle Wilson, the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Hampton Inn and Suites in Tallahassee and a member of the Board for the Tallahassee CVB, is happy with the cooperative effort. "We (Hampton Inns) are a proud partner with Florida State University and ISP Sports," she said. "This football season we recognize the importance of having guests travel to Tallahassee and we are offering discounted rates and a portion of our inventory at one night stays." Florida State fans are encouraged to check with their favorite local properties and discover how much more affordable attending the 2009 home season will be. "We've been very pleased with the fact that our partners and the Tallahassee business community recognize what a strain current conditions have placed on our out of town fans," said Jason Dennard, FSU Director of Marketing and Promotions. "In most cases the hotels have significantly reduced the cost to come to one of the home games and that will in turn help not only FSU football but the entire community. We've also introduced some new ticket packages including those in the new Family Zone as well as two mini-pack options that include just three home games."

RECRUITING NEWS & RUMORS

Tharinger predicts a commitment from CB Terrance Brooks at Seminole Showtime as well as some other predictions.

RB Eduardo Clements and  WR Quinton Dunbar from Miami Booker-T Washington showed up, as well as QB Godfrey, RB Gainer,  and WR Resse, from Miami Central.  And some other studs showed up. They are going to be working out tomorrow. Booker-T also brung up another kid who’s on my lil camp squad and he put on a show. He snagged a 50 yd one handed interception and covered side line to sideline. I got to get his name.

LaMarcus Joyner is still there and everyone has been impressed with his maturity.

From all accounts, the camps are going very very well.

Great news

Hopefully tharinger predictions come true, that will make for a great weekend.

A couple of things

The Brooks commitment would be great unless you’re a Dent fan right? I mean there’s no way we’d take 5 corners would we? (assuming we’re holding spots for LJ and Mitchell)

I hope Aubrey Phillips comes back.

I love the caliber of prospects coming out to the camps. And I really love that LJ has asserted himself as a leader. He is the hands down leader of this class if he wants to be.

Brooks > Dent

Corners:

Mitchell
Noel
Brooks

And I’m starting to think we should play the next Eric Berry at safety (Joyner).

I think Dent goes to Miami.

by FSUSOM on Jul 14, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Just what FSUsom said

We havent even offered Dent. I am really afraid it will burn us. Dent is progressing and is already a good corner. People keep telling me he is going to be a top 5-6 CB in the state this year. That said I like Brooks and there is a glut of CB talent in the state this year.

Losing Phillips

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

I'm not sweating it

Between the youth of our line and Trickett’s eye for talent and coaching ability I’m not worried about him leaving. In the long run I doubt we will remember Phillips leaving if he goes.

Would the loss of Phillips

affect the chances with Damien Robinson?

by coonhound on Jul 14, 2009 9:41 AM EDT reply actions

Thanks

Olive Branch is a haul from Tallahassee… basically a suburb of Memphis. And I don’t think we have any others from that region…

I just have this vision of 2011...

With Smiley and Lattimore running behind these massive 330 lb monsters that are fast and agile and are honed to zone block by Trickett…Phillips was part of that plan at guard.

Exactly how I feel

If he wasn’t feeling motivated or ready to work, him being there wasn’t going to make a difference because his heart wouldn’t be in it. If anything he would’ve gotten depressed or gained a bad attitude that caused problems. This could be good for him, a little soul searching, maybe get refreshed. Who knows, maybe his mom talks some sense into him and he gets his ass back down to Tally ready to go. If he doesn’t come back, he doesn’t wanna be here (so goodbye) and if he does come back he’ll have to prove he does wanna be here. We’ll be fine either way.

With the possibility of losing A. Phillips

Are there any OL prospects that are giving FSU a hard look? I saw that we could take 2-3 in 2010 but from our recruiting board, who do we have a good shot at landing?

Sure hope Aubrey makes it back…

Aubrey Phillips leaving FSU

Sometimes it’s really hard being away from home. I felt really bad during my two-a-days and was homesick and wanted to go home. It’s harder than most people would imagine. During the summers the campus is dead. No students are there and it’s just football players.

FSU's gorgeous Co-eds

Time to step up to the plate and make this kid “feel welcome”, if ya know what I mean, and I think ya do……

Is it just me, or

are the Clemson faithfull really expecting Dabo to be the second coming of Jesus Christ. He went 4-3 as an interim and has no other Head Coaching experience.

I could be wrong because they do have some talent on the team, but personally, I think they are in for a rude awakening.

And I would feel confident

with Coach Steele coming in…

No reason to be down if you are a Clemson fan. They’ve had talented recruiting classes and that should not change anytime soon.

Dabo is like the backup quarterback who has been now named the starter. He’ll get a pass for awhile…

by coonhound on Jul 14, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

If Clemson isn't better this year

with all the returning talent, I’ll begin to believe my suspicion that Swinney is just a cheaper TB clone.

If they are as good as expected, Dabo will (unfortunately) look like the second coming of Christ…

by FSUjab on Jul 14, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

For some reason

I find that guy is very charismatic, and I could see why kids would want to play for him and Coach Steele. His half-time venting during the FSU game was classic. It would take a heck of a long time to smoke two packs of cigarettes, right?

I just hope to heck he can’t coach.

Running back recruiting strategy

What do you guys think our ideas toward the running backs for this recruiting season are? We are hard after Smiley, Lattimore, and Gainer, and the logical guess would be that we won’t end up with all three. Are we thinking we’ll take the first two to commit? Or maybe assuming a Smiley commitment and choosing between Gainer and Lattimore? Are all three offers committable right now? I’m just trying to get an idea of how you guys think we are and should approach this situation.

by DKfromVA on Jul 14, 2009 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

We could

But I’d have to think there would be some hesitation on the part of all three towards being in one class. I guess with Smiley’s reduced eligibility from JUCO it makes it feasible, but I still doubt we end up with all of them.

....

A crazy situation went down with the central guys….I’m not sure of what happened but whatever it was it left a bad taste in their mouth about FSU. tough situation

There is no way you put a 5’8" 170 (granted he’ll grow some between now and then but not that much) kid at S, either free or strong. Talk about setting a secondary up to get wurked by teams w/ bigger WR’s. LJ is a corner al the way IMO.

by levynole on Jul 14, 2009 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think he has

There are a lot of evaluators that think he could have a bright future at Safety. He’ll be great at either position he plays in my opinion. But i’ve said it before and i’ll say the name again, Bob Sanders is one of the best Safeties in the NFL and he’s 5’8. Lamarcus is somwhere between 5’8 and 5’9 at this age and he hasn’t been placed in a college strength program. He also has better cover skills than Sanders and he hits like a LB, no joke. Its freakish.

by truenole87 on Jul 14, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree

As long as LJ is in our secondary, the kid will excel at either position.

I have never seen such a little man...

hit so damn hard. Just lays people out no matter their size. His highlights really got me pumped about landing this kid.

by Fire Machine on Jul 14, 2009 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

He also has great timing on his hits

He has a knack for hitting receivers right as the ball gets there and dislodging it. He closes very fast

Hey it's my first time posting..

I have read the blog for a long long time and check it pretty much daily. I love all the stuff, Tomahawk Nation is my PREMIUM site for FSU football! Now to my post..

I was talking to Ed Imeokparia (sp?) at the gym yesterday and he looked beastly. He said that he was fully back from injury and that we should be pretty good at safety this year. I dont know how this will affect all the corners we are taking this year or whether we move any of them to safety.

by 904nole on Jul 14, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

Welcome! Glad you signed up. join us as we tailgate Seminole Showtime!

As for Ed… good stuff. Was he at the regular gym?

by Bud Elliott on Jul 14, 2009 6:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He was in the Leech center

He was in the sauna. He kept stretching out his leg and saying how good it felt to be back healthy. Like I said, he was looking beastly for a safety

That's good to hear.

I hope he surprises. I hadn’t heard much about him this off-season, and before then it was sort of disappointing and then injury.

I've been curious about Ed for a while

But i’ve literally never heard anyone else mention him so I just swallowed the question lol

Scary thinking about 2010-2011 Defense if we get out targeted kids!

CB – LaMarcus Joyner, Greg Reid, Dionte Allen, Terrence Mitchell
S – Terrance Parks, Gerald Demps, Jajuan Harley
LB – Nigel Bradham, Christian Jones, Jeff Luc
DE – Markus White, Brandon Jenkins, Corey Miller
DT – Moses McCray, Demonte McAllister, Anthony McCloud, Jaccobi McDaniels, Brandon Willis

Don't forget

Merril Noel, Chad Abrams, Nick Moody, Nigel Carr, Vince Williams . . . maybe by then Toshman Stevens will have put on the proper weight (even though he’s expected to get solid time this season). The future is certainly bright.
