Super Conference?
I was chatting with a co-worker (a South Florida grad) about the SEC contract and what his take was as far as competitive edge and/or possible financial stake of future TV contracts for the ACC and Big East. He expressed his feeling that the Big East as a football conference wasn't feasible in the long run so the conversation turned to possible FBS realignment in the future.
A few minutes later he finds this article...

I'm not saying it’s necessarily feasible, but it makes an interesting point regarding the NCAAs ability to prevent schools from leaving. With fan demand for a playoff system and the NCAAs track record in rule enforcement it could be an interesting scenario down the line...

I linked to that article in the SEC thread
and didn’t say it now, but it is really a poor article in that it lacks background.
The NCAA is a voluntary organization, so anytime a group of teams or conferences wanted to leave, about all the NCAA could do is block teams that stayed behind with the NCAA from scheduling against those who left – and even then, it just would be sanctions.
The NCAA’s grip has long been tied to playoff moneys. Once upon a time, it was TV contracts, but conferences and individual schools started negotiating those – the NCAA tried to control it, but the SEC and others started the short lived CFA – College Football Alliance – and threatened to leave and make the CFA more of an NCAA style of organization unless the NCAA kept the hands off. The only TV contracts the NCAA now negotiates is playoff deals, and its hold there is pretty much tied to the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tourneys – the other television is chump change compared to basketball. The NCAA has almost no say on football money – each team and conference negotiates its own deals, the BCS handles tv deal for the BCS championship game, and the bowls pretty much negotiate their own deals, though some package themselves together to negotiate.
That’s the almost unspoken thing about the lack of playoffs – the TV negotiations. The NCAA is powerless to create the playoffs with risking rebellion; the BCS pretty much will dictate if there is one.
Anyway, in short, this new potential organization is just this generations CFA. If it happens.
