Monday Morning Tomahawks 07.20.09 Your spot for daily 'Nole News
A lot of 'Nole stuff happened this weekend. Inside, you'll find...
- FSU secured two commitments with their Seminole Showtime camp, and many more recruits were blown away! More coverage of the event throughout the week.
- FrankDNole, Fsued, and Rich from Chantrant.com posted the sequel to thier excellent "Best defensive players of all time piece", and the offensive one might be even tougher!
- TrueCubbie blew everyone out of the water with his preview of the 'Noles incoming basketball players!
- We had 12 new members sign up and comment over the weekend! A big TomahawkNation.com welcome to them!
- I did a radio appearance for KXCA-ESPN 1380am sports radio (Oklahoma). Should have the radio link for that soon.
- NoleCC @ Scalpem.com has a big 'Noles gut reaction preview! Very reasonable.
- The 'Noles worked conditioning indoors Thursday to avoid the rain.
- Gobbler Country did a study on ACC turnover rates!
- We found a nice source for Miami Hurricane Previews
- Dinich makes multiple predictions on the ACC
- Decent previews of UNC, Miami, and USF (also, USF's kicker fell 35 feet from a Busch Gardens ride Sunday). They've been added to the scouting page (left sidebar).
Dunnellon Cornerback Terrence Brooks commits to Florida State - Tomahawk Nation
Dunnellon CB Terrence Brooks has committed to the florida state 'Noles.
James F. Byrnes Defensive End Corey Miller Commits to the Florida State Seminoles! - Tomahawk Nation
Even before Seminole Showtime started, Corey Miller felt right about Florida State and decided to become a Seminole, as Florida State's 7th commitment of the 2009 class.
FSU's All-Time #1 Offensive Players By Position - Tomahawk Nation
There were some heated exchanges and debates on our part before we finally agreed on these players. As a matter of fact, a keyboard was smashed, chairs were thrown, a monitor was slammed to the ground, and a couple of holes were punched through walls during our intense deliberations (OK, maybe I exaggerate a little), but this offensive lineup was much more difficult for us to agree on than the defensive players we posted last week.
Summer Basketball Update: Meet the New Guys - Tomahawk Nation
Basketball recruiting is a skill that Florida State has typically excelled at given the conference in which it plays. Florida State is a football school first, second and third and the rest of the sports fall where they may after that. However, despite not being considered an elite basketball school, recruiting success is as much a part of the story of FSU Basketball history as Bobby Sura is. This year's recruiting class added four nice additions to Leonard Hamilton's squad: Michael Snaer, Terrance Shannon, Bernard James (if he makes it as a walk on) and Jon Kreft.
2009 FSU Football Gut Reaction Season Prediction · ScalpEm.com
Practice is just around the corner, and the first game is Labor Day evening, 8pm against the Canes. That ought to be a high scoring affair if history is any indication (ha!). It’s time for my gut reaction preseason predictions, and I’ll go game by game, but before I do, let me put out there that I think FSU has 8 wins in the schedule this season, not including a bowl game (or ACC Championship game, if that works out some way). When chatting casually about it, I usually say UF is a loss (1), GT is a loss (2), UNC on the road on a Thursday night (3) and take your pick of of losing 1 to the rest of the ACC, USF or BYU.
Seminoles continue their summer workouts with eyes on Miami game | tallahassee.com | Tallahassee Democrat
FSU has won three of its past four games against Miami. But there is a bit of uncertainty to a Miami team with two new coordinators, including its fourth defensive coordinator in as many seasons. Reed sees a Miami team with a lot of what he calls raw talent. "We've been watching film on these guys as a unit, and as quarterbacks and receivers," Reed said. "… We're looking for little things that we can do to exploit them. I think it will be a great match-up."

Russell Wilson Breaks the Turnover Curve for ACC Quarterbacks - Gobbler Country
Russell Wilson's turnover efficiency was off the charts in 2008. Christian Ponder? Not so much. Very well done piece by the Va Tech boys.

This guy is a fairly unbiased Miami fan and will be a good source for info on the canes.

No vid on Erin Andrews peep show…? :o/
by CSI Nole on Jul 20, 2009 11:08 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Erin has been seen sporting a bruised chin.
She said she got hit by a foul ball at a Mets/Dodger game. Some are questioning what really might have caused the bruise on her chin. Still others have been quoted as saying
“Super hot sportscaster Erin Andrews shouldn’t participate in any activities where balls fly at her face”
Personally, I disagree.

Got there too Late
to catch up with anyone from TN. Maybe next time.
I’m glad to hear the recruits were impressed, because it did take forever to get things going, and I was hoping for a better crowd.
Those camps don't really draw large crowds
by CSI Nole on Jul 20, 2009 11:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Good to hear...Just hope the gators camp doesn't impress with a large crowd,
however, I’m sure the stadium will be filled with typical SEC fans with only 2 teeth.
Follow Up Activities
In kinda in the dark, but is there some other type of event taking place this weekend following Showtime? I might make it back to Tally and remember hearing about a follow-up or second special event. I might be crazy, though.
FSUs 7 on 7 will be this weekend
I will be out there for a little while with a coach buddy of mine who is bringing his team

Terrence Brooks
ESPN.com just posted their evaluation of him. 150 watch list, baby! I find it cool how whenever a kid commits to us, they start evaluating them like Noel.
By the way, i’m new here. If you want, you should check out my videos on youtube. i make all those FSU previews like the Wide receivers preview.
That's great news!!!
I was wondering where he would shake out! I honestly didn’t know he was that good but that’s awesome!
a Radio appearance FSUn?
First, congrats.
Second, you do realize you’re eerily close to following dot.com in turning your avocation into your vocation? Went to law school, but decided to run his site full time, bowed to pressures to generate revenue….
:-)
We're thinking about it. Though I live 5 hours away, some of our writers are local.
We’re very blessed to have them.
Re: Subscription Model
is a dying business plan. One need only look at the scores of major newspapers and magazines that are being rescued or closing up shop.
That model is funamentally incompatible with 21st century technology, inasmuch as it seeks to restrict the flow of information in what is for all intents and purposes, the age of instant communication.
I’m convinced that the way to make money at something at a website like this is to a) develop a quality brand and b) develop tie ins and revenue streams from closely affiliated partnerships, e.g. 5% kickback from garnet & gold purchases when routed through tomahawk nation.
Simply selling ad space - where a good web browser blocks most of the ads anyway- or relying on people paying money for information that is not unique, is not, in the long run, going to be sustainable.

strike through
I guess if you type two dashes, it automatically strikes through the text…. note to self, stick to obnoxious use of parenthesis from now on.
I hope the guy is alright, and eventually gets back to full form
after he is released from the hospital on September 27.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
He won't be playing this year.
Cracked bone in his back or something.
Our 2011 recruiting class is shaping up to be something special
DE Ray Drew (Lowndes, another early commit, probably 5*)
DB Tyler Hunter (Lowndes, I’ve heard he’s like Greg Reid at 6’1 200, and that he can play CB. Compares to Patrick Johnson/Peterson. Would be an elite S or CB. Likely early commit)
S Karlos Williams (top three player in Florida, maybe the best)
QB Christian Lemay
RB Mike Bellamy
WR Javares McRoy (will be better than Debose and Dunkley)
Wow. Bellamy might be a reach, but the others I think we get easily.
*Knocks on wood*
Of those, I think Lemay worries me most just because we know it’ll be a Jimbo-Urban battle
We are behind on Bellamy
SEC all over the kid, the rest look like high probability guys
by SWFLNole. on Jul 20, 2009 4:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I know Jimbo is high on Lemay, but where would you rank him in the QB's of 2011?
by basbalstr101 on Jul 20, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Would you give Bridgewater the nod for top QB (maybe player, too) in 2011?
by basbalstr101 on Jul 20, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Lemay fits what Jimbo wants to do well
He is very accurate for his age, has gorgeous mechanics, makes quick decisions, and has good quickness/agility

Is it too late for walk on tryouts at kicker?
I wonder if USF’s punter is a Gano clone.
Just wants to beat the Gators
Bud, uploading the SS videos on Megavideo now
should be ready in an hour or two. I’ll send you an email with links.
Is anyone else seriously disappointed that we only pulled 2 commits this weekend?
I was thinking we were going to get at least 4 for sure. Oh well. I guess now we have more speculation and discussion before two-a-days…
FSUn
Will there be an article examining how scarily thin we are at LB depth right now as you mentioned there may be in another thread?
Too many of our fans.....
think you can last a 14 game season with 3 OLBs but then think we need 9 RBs on scholarship. They just don’t ‘get’ football.
Until FSU becomes physical on BOTH sides of the ball (OL and defensive front 7), it will NOT turn the corner.
But many folks, including myself said when Amato was hired that the LB corp would wind up thin. Granted, much of it is just bad luck…..but you can’t say nobody saw it coming.
If FSU signs 4 LBs this year, it is because Coley saved FSU’s arse again.
gio bernard?
he is on the front page of warchant saying he loves us right now?
do you think we take him or look elsewhere?
Isnt Geo the opposite of what Jimbo looks for size wise?
I thought the main reason folks were down on Clements was his lack of size, now here comes Geo and we want him? We have a freshmen in C.Thompson who has better moves and is faster and overall a lot better than Geo, dont see the point in taking him.
Defense is not the problem, but will it be this year?
Size Wise, but not playing wise
Size wise, yes, Jimbo wants bigger backs. But with Bernard’s physicality and stiffarms, if i didn’t know, i’d think he was a big bruiser like 230 pounds!
by fsufrenzy911 on Jul 20, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Clements>Bernard
I think since Clements cooled we need another back up plan and turned to Bernard.
Defense is not the problem, but will it be this year?
FSUn?
Didn’t you say you were skeptical about Clements skill because he ran behind a great line, well the same can be said for Bernard.
Defense is not the problem, but will it be this year?
I beliebe Gio had always been higher on the coaches board.

Which QB was Gonzalez at SS?
I assumed he was the guy in the red/black shorts, but I’m not sure. I don’t think he was super impressive if that was him.
but in his defense
I know there’s alot of development for a QB in college. Maybe Jimbo sees something he likes, or maybe the offer is withdrawn, ha.
Later this week
If past precedent is a valid indicator a few recruits will come aboard after they talk it over with their parents. That is what happened last year. Shortly after SS a few started trickling in. I would not be surprised to see that happen this time.
Funny you would mention that
“Re: Subscription Model
is a dying business plan. One need only look at the scores of major newspapers and magazines that are being rescued or closing up shop.”
I just got off the phone five minutes ago with the Sentinel. They asked why I was cancelling and I told the Mike Bianchi, he has to go! LOL
Brandon Willis
i have a feeling he will be a nole before the end of July…..i have a good feeling about Joyner before the start of his season……..i think christinan green is just enjoying the attention from the national champions he has said he wants to play WR in a prostyle offense
Clint Trickett
I tell you what I think is going to happen. He already has a scholarship to FSU via Rick Trickett’s contract. If FSU doesn’t see a quarterback they really want and Clint decides he wants to play at FSU they simply don’t sign one.
If Clint wants to leave now they may go for a Godfrey or some other quarterback.
I think Clint is probably one of the better ones left on the board and he has an actual chance of beating people out and starting.
Why don’t some of you guys interview him and see what he thinks about the situation. That would be interesting.
Clint is a Sexton clone, only Sexton had a better arm.
Defense is not the problem, but will it be this year?
Why? Because his dad is a coach?
or b/c he runs down the street screaming that he is God?
Comparsion has nothing to do with fathers
Physically, they looked very similar and both have/had great mechanics for high school kids.
Defense is not the problem, but will it be this year?
Apparently Clint has said he does not want to play for his dad.

Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
I appreciate the info I have been wondering about this. I know he does have offers listed from
Arky
Colorado State
Louisville
Central Michigan
South Florida
Wake Forest has shown interest. We don’t need him going there. All Rick Trickett needs to send Wake’s way is an ### beating and the sooner the better.
Aubrey Phillips rips FSU
Good riddance. We don’t need soft guys that can’t handle the pressure.

This is so wrong
Trickett should have never called him a fat $$. I mean how on earth could you ever think that Im going to not work out and gain more weight than I was to lose over the time I need to lose it and not be able to hang. We should have known this. This kid is a lazy @#$#%^#$^%#$#$#@. Im not down with lazy people. They dont get things done and people get hurt because of them. Good Im glad hes at Ua.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
ha thanks for fixing that shouldnt have wrote it like that
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
Now that I think about it
Isn’t Aubrey a chic name? Maybe we’ll catch him on the series, The Biggest Loser (Football Edition).
Harsh words
Fortunately we don’t need to worry about recruits wanting to play for Trickett. He can make make All-Americans out of guys who come in with good work ethic and a chip on their shoulder. Guys will come here because they want to be pushed and want to maximize their potential.
Aubrey Phillip's weight
Would other colleges accept that weight? I know that Trickett likes lean quick guys, but I see other teams with 355 pound lineman. Is Trickett just being absurd? Is that weight suitable for his frame?
JMO, but the kid is going to be in a constant battle with his weight
to me he is Lucky Lunford. All the talent in the world, but needs to control his weight to be effective. He could end up being an AA or just another kid who lost his battle with the bulge and ends up a 375lb 3rd stringer who’s lucky to get a free education out of it.
I’ve always been against taking kids that are 300+ (unless they are like 6’7+) out of HS as they will always struggle with weight. I’ve always preferred the Alex Barron model of 6’6" guy who’s about 280-290 coming out of HS.
By always, I mean since I’ve been following recruiting (since class of 99) on the net.
Too bad Jimmy Heggins wasn't here for him.
Back when we we didn’t care about anything but pass protection, we could have used his lard.
