Thursday Florida State Odds & Ends

Seminoles.com has some cool video:  the Ponder v. Powell 9-hole challenge.

Rivals.com College Football - Rivals.com 120 Countdown: No. 38 N.C. State
Decent, though it doesn't exclude Irving.

Inside, some more Seminole news

Star-divide

  • I think Rodney Smith could Redshirt.  He's a kid who really needs to grow into his body, and while he has a lot of talent, I'm not sure it will translate immediately at this level.  He played in a very simplistic wing-T attack in high school and the adjustment to FSU is harder for him than many thought it might be.
  • Did you know that Louis Givens was one of the top kick returners in the SWAC before coming to FSU?  I expect to see him and AJ Alexander return kicks this year.
  • Speaking of the return game, Greg Reid and Bert Reed will handle punts.
  • More on this later, but we don't have the best offensive line in the country.  It's a very good line, but any talk of " best in the country" needs to wait until 2010, when FSU will have 2 seniors and 3 juniors.
  • Paul Griffin takes you on a tour of the locker room and the weight room.  Paul's a good guy.
  •

  •  Remember that last year FISH didn't name a Starting QB until September 3rd.  I have to think that having an entrenched starter will help come this season.
  • Bert Reed seems to be taking on more of a leadership role during conditioning and 7-on-7 drills.
  • While there have been several public arrests, it's important to remember that only one of the incidents (the bike snafu with Maurice Harriss) has actually occurred this offseason.  The rest were from stuff in the past that the police later made arrests on.
  • Coach Stroud was very complimentary of Nigel Bradham and Andrew Datko in conditioning drills.
  • Evan Bellamy doesn't physically look like someone who should be on the team.  FSU should find a medical disqualification for him.
  • One of the guys watching thought he saw C.J. Mizell out there, which is good, if it really was him, because he's staying in shape whether he goes to Hargave academy or stays in town to work on his classes.
  • The team is breaking their huddle with "hard work".
  • A big thumbs up to Todd Stroud for stressing injury avoidance through proper technique.
  • A big thanks to Brad who stops by these sessions for us.  He works at Logan's Roadhouse on Appalachee Parkway.  If you're hungry on Appalachee, stop in and ask for Brad and tip him.  College kids like tips.
  • Here's an interesting article on pay sites v. free sites and sustainable media models (ours: get guys who love their team and who don't charge for their coverage) .
  • Miami is playing the no-respect card.  Yawn.
  • We have Mobile Commenting!
  • Working on some other stuff that will me multiple installments in length.

Miami is so lame with their same old weak tatics...

‘us against the world’, ‘we don’t get respect’. That crap was played out 20 years ago.

Miami

I really hope we don’t get players talking like that before our season starts.

I don’t think Jimbo would let that happen, and I don’t think our players are dumb enough to say crap like that.

and I don’t think our players are dumb enough to say crap like that.

But we have some coaches dumb enough to print it on t-shirts.

They both have solid golf swings.

Tremendous amount of club-head speed, but Ponder could go for a few putting lessons.

Regarding “Best offensive line in the country.” We may be on of the top run blocking lines in the nation this year, but we still have to wait and see on pass pro.

Just glad I wasn't on the golf course standing next to the guy...

…who you just know thought he was the funniest man in the world when he yelled out “Wide right!” after a wicked Powell slice. Oh, the uncomfortable silence and stare-down that took out that first-rate comedian’s self-congratulatory laughter. “He’s not even a placekicker, you idiot.” “I know, I’m just being funny. Lighten up.” That’s when people start getting p*ssed.

Going on vacation until next weekend with very limited internet access. Looking forward to Showtime reports. Everyone stay well.

Hopefully Ponder is more accurate with his pass reads

than he is with his green reads. He three putted from 6 feet.

Everyone is a comedian on a golf-course. Not to mention everyone thinks the have a right to be a jackass.

Funny thing is...

Me and my buddies play just as bad, but we talk just as much smack… Like they say, golf is like sex, you don’t have to be good at it to enjoy it…

cool beens

the mic looks so small in Pauls hands.

Will Reed be a® JR or SO this year.

With CJ, If he were to get some home schooling or something like that would be lose any years if he can make it next year. I dont know how it all works. IF hes going to stay in shape I hope he works that hard to get to school and stay out of trouble.

As For respcet for The U. $#!+ Thats good they think that. They have so much talent but are not using it. I would hate to see them if they got an o-line with some real beef. They are like Wis kinda with out the size. I think they could get back if they would get some size on there o-line and there new DC makes good progress. That game is going to tell us more I think than most. I dont want to be great at that game I want to be sound. If we dont miss blocks on Off and the Secondary works Ill be happy. But we still have to win.

Goal for this year. Get back to the ACCCG (Would love to win and go to the OB butt Thats asking to much right now.) one step at a time.

Reed will be a soph

CJ wouldn’t lose any years, b/c its prep school.

Miami is gonna be a wild game Des, are you coming down?

by Bud Elliott on Jul 9, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Would love to but

Working with BCT soldiers means I dont get weekends like that off. Ive only been to 3 games but this year Im going to make it to at least one. Thats my goal is make it to one a year. Im not going to buy into miami yet. I think they are 3 or 4 years behind us. And at the rate we arte moving foward I think we will stay ahead of them tell they can win there side of the ACC. They have it harder though because VT is going to be ok and GT is only going to get better. The thing about GT right now is with all the High Schools that still run the option there are only a few colleges left that do and unless you want to go into the Millitary there goes 3 of those schools. I think thats what some people need to worry about when it comes to GT and recruits.

O-line

Yeah, I’m getting wary of all this talk about how great our O-line will be. We will be better — no question. And the jump in performance should be greatest from freshman to sophomore and sophomore to junior.

But still, this group has a LONG way to go — last year we were solid, but there is a big gap between solid and dominant. We won’t bridge it in one off-season.

by Fsued on Jul 9, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Im not going to say we will be dominat ether however

I think we should be great for the ACC. There is one good thing about the ACC still. no 2 teams run the same thing. Some run the spread like us, GT option, some power where like in the big 12 and big 10 its almost all the same thing. I think we will be the best in the ACC. I think we can say our O-line is Dominant when Our Defs is back on to. When teams fear having them on the field because with Jimbo at the helm on Off. they will only get better. yes they have a long way to go but there is one great thing. They are going in the right direction unlike 4-5 years ago.

Miami Game is on a Monday Night...

I seen where you said you dont get weekends off. Its Labor Day so if you think you’ll be off. If you dont have a ticket i can’t make a promise but I get 6 tickets on the 50yd line and 38rows up behind the tropical storm…. i mean miami’s bench. They was its lookin only 5 of us will be able to go so if that plays out we will have one xtra ticket. NO CHARGE. My G-Pa is a HUGE Booster and gives up tickets so we do not believe in charging what was given to us. just keep me posted and i’ll let you know

O-Line

Went and saw Mickey speak tonight at the Orlando Booster Meeting and he says the O-Line will be the best in the conference this year and possibly the best in the nation. That may be hyperbole but he was very complimentary of them.

by Nole_Fan_Til_I_Die on Jul 9, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

As noted previously

I don’t think Mickey goes to see other schools in the off-season.

Not sure how valid his comparison could really be.

by PBD on Jul 10, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Well this would be good if true

Mabye he can learn from them about what to do this year so our Def wont turn into the worst in the ACC or nation.

That Scares Me

Simply because he probably said that his defense will be great too. He’s very delusional on how well he is doing. The offensive line couldn’t even pass block last year and showed no improvement whatsoever as the season progressed. I don’t know how it’s going to suddenly happen during a long period of time without any practice, then a couple of weeks of it right before the season starts. That’s why I don’t think Christian Ponder is going to be any better than last year at least to start. The offensive line has to pass block in order for him to have a chance. He’ll be running a lot though, and for positive yardage so that’s good.

It was long ago and it's far away but it was so much better than it is today--Meatloaf

Isn't that all the time any team gets?

There should still be some improvement year to year, if only from healing, reflecting, strengthening, watching film…

by jasonole59 on Jul 11, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Cant say I agree

Our O-line did get better over the season and I think they will be better this year. The line is bigger and stronger and got a year under there belt. Will they be the best prob not but they could be the best in the ACC. Our Off will be the reason we win the ACC this year. Ponder will have a little more time too. Not a lot more but a little.

OL is pretty much best in ACC even according to the talking heads of the media

“Went and saw Mickey speak tonight at the Orlando Booster Meeting and he says the O-Line will be the best in the conference this year and possibly the best in the nation. That may be hyperbole but he was very complimentary of them.”

Mickey is absolutely correct on this one as it is what he faces at practice daily.

Trickett doesn’t have much of a track record when it comes to being wrong. When he is calling next year’s offensive line as best in nation it pretty well tells you the line this year is going to be close.

The starting talent will be tremendous compared to what FSU has fielded the last few years the back ups are the difference makers. Many teams would love to have our back ups starting this year.

Guys like Greenlee, Sanderson (top lineman in Hillsborough County) Faircloth and even the incoming freshman like Orelus and Aubrey Phillips had tons of offers. Phillips is huge and quck and a lot of schools would try and work him into a starting lineup even as a freshman.

Our backups this year may well be better than the line Trickett had to put on the field the first year he showed up.

Just for the record if Trickett thought Hudson was a better center than McMahon he would have been playing it long ago.

by DocHoliday2 on Jul 10, 2009 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Without injury I would say pretty tight.

The only guys that should be leaving will be McMahon and Hudson. There is a real good chance Trickett’s recruits stick around for a degree also.

Have you ever noticed that when the conversation turns to which recruits won’t qualify, none of them ever seem to have been recruited by Trickett?

by DocHoliday2 on Jul 10, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

Because he knows what hes looking for.

He is looking for someone with common secnce its the Jarhead in him. Find someone with common secnce and tell them Ill get you a free ride and a chance to play pro and they will do it.
