Looks like Terrell Buckley is moving to grad asst from his current spot ...

Star-divide

Can't be a good financial move, I would think, but does get him actually coaching DBs more actively. Should be good for the young secondary.

Tamarick Vanover is returning as a student assistant as well. Good to see him come back for his degree.

For the younger crowd, Vanover was one of FSU's more dynamic receivers ever, but left early (CFL?) for reasons I don't remember. One tidbit - as a freshman, he won the starting kick return job, and was such a threat that teams stopped kicking to him. His per kickoff average was so high, he would have shattered the all time NCAA record for kickoff return average in a season if teams hadn't stopped kicking to him - he missed the minimum returns required to qualify for the record by one. If he had even fair caught that one ball, he'd have had the record by a lot.

More on Vanover

40.2 per return average.

And he left FSU early due to off the field issues.

Vanover as a student asst will be drawing controversy — his off the field problems involve legal issues, and has served time in prison. If he has truly turned things around (and there have been no issues for years), he could catch the ears of the receiver corps with his lessons learned.

He seems to have turned it around.

As you pointed out, no issues for years.

He provides valuble experience in more ways than one

His story is compelling. His off the field issues ruined what was sure to be an outstanding career, but the fact that he was still able to have a solid NFL career gives him much needed on the field experience. He played 5 seasons with KC as a WR and KR/PR. He can help with running routes and obviously the pit falls of bad decisions. 5 years is a quality NFL career, especially with one team and his numbers, while more impressive on special teams are still indicative of someone coaches knew were of value. He caught 39 passes for 564 yards, rushed for 88 yards, returned 181 punts for 1930 yards (a 10.2 average) and 4 TDs, and returned 226 kickoffs for 5422 yards (a 24.0 average) and 4 TDs. Truly an electric athlete. Word was that while he was at FSU he clocked a 40 time faster than Deion.

Help with running routes?

If memory serves, Vanover was notoriously horrible at running routes. That’s why he never really made it as a receiver in the NFL. His highlight reel consists almost entirely of kick returns and fly routes, even at FSU.

Still, I’m glad he’s back. I’ll never forget sitting in the stands at the 1992 Miami game (@Miami) and watching him return the opening kick for a TD. I can still see the deflated faces of the Cane fans surrounding me.

I agree

Having someone who succumbed to bad influences tell their story is a bit more engaging to younger guys than people who have “done it straight” all their lives. Younger guys now seem to think that their circumstances are unique, and don’t realize that when we all were teens, we had the exact same influences and choices that we could’ve made.

Speaking as an athlete, it was always benfitial for me (and even moreso for teammates who were closer to the trap) to see people who were in your shoes, and had made bad choices. Then again, I tend to learn from others mistakes as well as my own, so maybe they will think something to the effect of “That’ll never happen to me”. – You know, the whole “I’m invincible” thought that you have from around puberty until you have kids of your own.

Hopefully he will be a great influence on the marginal thug-abees who think they are just trying to be cool and fit in. Maybe he can be a wake up for them.

Often overlooked factoid

Florida State is undefeated when The K-Man wears his authentic Tamarick Vanover #80 white jersey to our games.

by The K-Man on Jul 10, 2009 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

Naw.

I’ll just wear it to all the games against FCS foes. My jersey’s all-time win record is more important than the long-term success of the team. If anybody wants to borrow my jersey, it’s yours for 2.5 Mill. (rented on a year-to-year basis, of course)

Anything to the timing?

Anyone think there is something to the timing … less for Vanover, more so for Buckley.

There are expectations/rumors that Buckley is the next DB coach, and moving from the S&T staff to grad asst moves him from the weight room to on the field coaching. Grad assts are also, I believe, limited to two years.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Jul 10, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

I think its definitely a factor

I’m really glad this move was made, Buckley can show our corners some great things. And for him to be active and hands on is a major draw for top tier DB’s like Joyner (especially in South Florida)

T Van's story...

…is pretty f’d up. Him telling it to our team is gonna be a good thing, a damn good thing.

I think he was involved

with Bam Morris. His involvement centered around financing it.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Jul 12, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I really hope you guys are right.

I really do. And I hope he has something to teach beyond life lessons. I don’t think he was ever concerned with finer technique, details and discipline— with his speed he didn’t need to be. I’m not sure he’ll be helpful in those areas, but he did coach a small private school for a while. I guess just hope this is not another BB Boys Club decision, and it’s something Jimbo thought would be beneficial for the team.

by FiestaNole on Jul 10, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

IMO he was more straight line speed

I have some old video tapes of games from his freshman season, he basically just outran everyone. He wasn’t as good of an actual receiver as warrick but definitely one of the most dangerous guys on the field at any given time. His speed was blazing.

by truenole87 on Jul 10, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

His talents and skill set were unique

Really hard to compare him to any other receiver from the past. The side-by-side of him and Peter posted below is accurate as well. When you think of past FSU receivers who were burners, you might think of Craphonso Thorpe of Talman Gardner. Don’t know how Tamarick’s speed matched up on the stopwatch, but he was more power AND speed. He wasn’t afraid of contact and didn’t chop step, cut back, or down shift once he was at top speed. He weighed well over 200 lbs. and pretty much wanted to run right through a tackle rather than tip toe around.

by The K-Man on Jul 11, 2009 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

very different.

Warrick was shake and bake but not very fast, which didn’t serve him well in the NFL.

Vanover was all speed. He was not into techinique, but could catch the ball with noone around him and just fly, which is why he was great on kick-offs.. It looked like everyone one around him was standing still.

Had he ever become disciplined, on the field and off, he would have been special in the NFL. But he wasn’t. So I don’t know what he has learned that he can teach. Bobby is notorious for taking guys with no background to teach the finer points of a position and putting them in charge (Jimmy Heggins, Jody Allen…)

I’m waaaayyyy past the “trust Bobby” stage on these kind of things. Vanover will be doing nothing but learning about coaching here, imho. However, Lawrence Dawsey, who was the opposite of Vanover in every facet I just listed, is in charge of WR’s, so indeed maybe all they want Vanover to do is inject some life lessons reality into this corps.

by FiestaNole on Jul 10, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

let's do remember

it is a student asst position, not even a grad asst position. He’s coming back to complete his degree.

Buckley’s a grad assistant, not Vanover. I think student assistant just gets to hang out with the team, and perhaps during games keep the water cups full.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Jul 10, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep!

If i remember correctly his first play from scrimmage was a ridiculous opening kick off return at Miami in the 1 vs. 2 years.

Yeah, right!

Here's a vid from the same game.

I don’t think I’ve seen a replay of the kickoff return for over 15 years.

SA

If im not mistake, student assistants help aid a position coach during practices (and maybe during games but not totally sure)… i think its more about helping a position coach and learning while helping… i know a lot of grad assistants start out as student assistants

by officelinebacker on Jul 10, 2009 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

I know, i was

exaggerating about carrying jock straps, etc. But the point is still valid that he is not the primary teacher, or even significant. Schools use grad assistants to aid at crucial spots, not student assistants. Typically FSU has used its two grad assts as one on offense, one on defense. Typically the one on D has worked with d-backs, to assist Mickey who’s got more players than anyone else on D (with four of the positions on the 4-3 D) and works as the DC.

Under Jimbo, the first grad asst was to help the offensive line, and that asst was a former Trickett player – that met a need. Before him, the offensive grad assistant was often for receivers, to aid Bowden when he was OC.

Anyone know who the offensive grad asst this fall? I think the guy that was there has reached the time limit in the position allowed under NCAA rules.

I was going to mention that

“Still, I’m glad he’s back. I’ll never forget sitting in the stands at the 1992 Miami game (@Miami) and watching him return the opening kick for a TD. I can still see the deflated faces of the Cane fans surrounding me.”

The difference in Vanover and some of the guys we hear, 4.2 speed, five star and the rest is he went out and did it in big games.

Could you imagine Reed or Reid taking the opening kickoff this season back to the house against Miami?

by DocHoliday2 on Jul 10, 2009 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

Only one problem . . .

Didn’t we end up losing that game to Miami? Wide right 2?

by missourinole on Jul 11, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Sad to say it was but that year’s kick would only have tied the game and they didn’t do overtime back then.
