Merrill Noel Switches to the Deacons

Pahokee CB Merrill Noel has switched his commitment from the good guys to go to Wake Forest. This should absolutely not come as a suprise to anyone, because he was going to commit to Wake Forest in the first place. His FSU commitment was always tied to DeJoshua Johnson, and it seemed clear to some his heart was in North Carolina. Merrill is a very good player but not irreplaceable in this class. FSU already has DB Terrence Brooks, looks good for LaMarcus Joyner and Terrance Mitchell, and if they offered Rashad Knight he would commit on the spot. No worries.

I agree that we are in good shape still. Rashad Knight, Riggs and Payne are all great kids that we are still in the mix with. If we get Joyner and T-rex we dont have to worry fo’ sho’!

I am completely new to recruiting and have no "inside information"

But, if what I hear on ThaRinger’s forums are correct there are non-committable offers handed out all the time. If we were going to give an offer to the kid and we really wanted him, we accept his commitment and think of him as “in our class.” If he is just a backup plan why are we accepting his offer in the first place?
I guess I’m not making much sense of it, but decommits are a problem on the face of it from what I think. If the decommitted that means they were good enough for us to accept their commitment at first glance.
Show me the error of my ways

You have it correct for the most part

Noel is absolutely good enough to be a part of this class, and his offer was commitable. He was not a backup plan, we are taking an exceptionally large defensive class this cycle.

The real crux of it comes in evaluation. Joyner, and Mitchell are better than Noel. Brooks is on the same level, some like him more some like Brooks more. Rashad Knight is on the same level as Brooks and Noel, Rivals actually likes Rashad more. There is just a gluttony of CB talent in Florida this year.

Personally I’d like to see Greg Dent replace Merrill Noel. I imagine it will be Rashad Knight or we will go really hard for Keion Payne.

Regardless we lost a good player, but certainly not an irreplaceable. There are some people around here, and I won’t name names, who didn’t want Merrill in this class to begin with.

I really LOVE this site for this reason SWFLNole

No BS and no bias. I fully expected “nah dude we just we being generous” and a long explanation of how he missed out on us.
I realized that he wasn’t on top of our list and we didn’t lose our #1 defensive talent, but if we accepted him he was and is good enough to play.
Can’t say how enough how refreshing it is to hear the truth.

by NoleRaised on Aug 1, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Once again, thanks to TN for actually allowing people to talk about recent developments. It’s nice to know the posts you make won’t be deleted like they are at certain other sites where you can “consider yourself warned”.

by NoleThruandThru on Aug 1, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Rashad Knight, IMO, profiles to safety much better than corner. Noel is a pure corner which may mean that the FSU staff wants to replace a corner with a corner.

Greg Dent is a heavy Cane lean right now.

by gahnki on Aug 1, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know about all of what you said

I agree Noel profiles as a CB, but he played a ton of safety . He is wet behind the ears as a corner actually.

I know Dent is leaning to the Canes. So is Payne. I was simply asserting the fact that I would like to see FSU’s coaches go hard after Greg Dent, not that he WILL be a part of the class.

We will see how it plays, I think Knight is going to play CB somewhere not safety. We may not replace him at all, and simply take a different position if there is nobody the coaches really want. We don’t have to have another CB probably.

by SWFLNole. on Aug 1, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Wont be the last kid to change his mind.

Certainly not with the number of kids committing so early these days.

Speed is a great asset; but it's greater when it's combined with quickness - and there's a big difference.

If we were going to lose a CB commit,

I’d definitely choose Noel. I’m not as high on him as others are and was very surprised when he committed to FSU in the first place. If FSU could somehow land Riggs instead, that would be a HUGE upgrade.

As said above, a DB class of Joyner, Mitchell, Brooks, Abrams, and one other CB would be outstanding. Not upset by this at all.

by NoleThruandThru on Aug 1, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

If I'm not upset about this noone will be, honestly

I’m higher on Noel than anyone outside our coaching staff. It’s cool, if we’re going to lose a player let it be a CB with the talent that is out there this year at that position

by SWFLNole. on Aug 1, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

he'll see how much he regrets this

2 to 3 years down the road when djj is burnin him all over the feild, but if we can still get joyner and another big name cb this is not a back breaker.
off topic but im watchin the replay of the GT game from this past season (cringes i know) but i was just watchin garvin return a huge kickoff…and bradham was runnin damn near stride for stride down the sideline 0_o just scares me of the beastly possibilites of nigel haha, and if anyone wants to watch the game to get a nice lil seminole fix like me, its on sun sports _

Gives us a chance to find a taller CB...

Someone to match up on these taller WRs in the red zone. Only athletic freaks like Reid or Joyner can be under 6ft and match up to a 6’6 WR running a fade stop in the end zone. Still thank we should go after Payne…

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Knight, Coleman (we want, we still get imo), or Payne?

Coleman — athletic ability, loads upon loads of potential

Payne — height, lots of good offers

Knight — can hit like a truck

by FSUSOM on Aug 1, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

well

which one would you rather have?

by aaron321 on Aug 1, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

Personally?

Noel honestly.

Rivals has Knight higher.

by SWFLNole. on Aug 1, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Out of those three I would take

Knight
Payne

Coleman

But would be happy with either Knight or Payne to be honest

by NoleThruandThru on Aug 1, 2009 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

I think we are good on CB’s this year.
Brooks_commited
Joyner
Mitchell
Riggs
Payne
Dent
Knight
Coleman

by fsudude on Aug 1, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Knight and an offer

If and when do you think FSU will offer? Considering we have an outside shot at landing Payne/Riggs?

by CSI Nole on Aug 1, 2009 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

I think Payne goes to UM now.

We burnt that bridge along time ago.

Go Noles!!!

by nolefan07 on Aug 1, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree about burning that bridge

If that’s the case, focus on Riggs/Knight/Dent

by CSI Nole on Aug 1, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Good Luck to Noel

Good luck to him. This year the CB position is soooo stacked I don’t think this matters. Perception wise, ouch. We just got a recruit taken from us by Wake Forest. In football. Ugh.

ego ferguson...??????

i was reading on tharinger’s boards and people are saying he wants to play in florida……florida fans were saying they didnt want him and apparently miami quit recruting him…..and we made his top 14…..what do you guys think your chances our with him?

by aaron321 on Aug 1, 2009 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

i doubt

that UF and Miami dont want him. Hes a 5 star stud…where did you hear that UF and miami dont want him?? We have a shot but he likes to play recruiting games so im not going to get my hopes up at all. I like Brandon Willis.

by fsudude on Aug 1, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Just an opinion

His Rivals 5 star status is tied to the fact that he loves to talk and his recruitment will be long and drawn out. He is a good player, but not top 25 in the country to me.

by SWFLNole. on Aug 1, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

me too

i have heard that too……..its on tharinger’s boards

by aaron321 on Aug 1, 2009 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

They could be right or wrong

But I trust the guys on TN and it’s rare that you hear the name Ego Ferguson being tossed around. He’s been brought up on several occasions but as far as FSU standing a chance for his services, haven’t heard much.

by CSI Nole on Aug 1, 2009 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I say we get Ben McCoy

sorry, had to squeeze that in there hahaha

by truenole87 on Aug 1, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure

bet it is a parenting decision, honestly. My mom pushed me to FSU because my brother was here.

Regardless of if he will follow Ben to MTSU, if a big school in the south will get Ben on campus they guaruntee the TN #6 2011 kid.

by SWFLNole. on Aug 1, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

And I still maintain that Ben although largely under the radar, is not a marginal talent. If we were to get Ben it would guarantee Javares and he’s definitely worth it.

by truenole87 on Aug 1, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Ummmm

You’re mom pushed you to FSU? What other schools were you considering? hehe

Better now than in Feburary

As long as we still have time to make changes, decommits are no big deal. If the coaches really want Noel, they can still go after him. He could decommit from WF as well. It seems like they will look elsewhere though.

OH YEAAHH!

by TBfisherman on Aug 1, 2009 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

It has been a long time since we could say this

The way the depth chart per cornerbacks is shaping up an incoming recruit really does have to take a look at it and decide if he is going to get any playing time at FSU in the future.

Some recruits more than others want to play right away and his chances of doing that are much greater at Wake than in Tallahassee.

A kid has to be thinking am I better than Reid, Joyner, Brooks, Alexander, Allen and some of the targets FSU is pursing right now.

by DocHoliday2 on Aug 1, 2009 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

It works both ways

Telvin Smith probably looked at the FSU depth chart at linebacker and saw he had a great shot at early playing time where as Georgia is pretty loaded up there.

by DocHoliday2 on Aug 1, 2009 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

terrence mitchell and Lamarcus joyner are not fsu commits….yet. I do think their is alot of talent out there at corner. the coaches need to get on it – OSU, Georgia, etc, are working hard at getting these guys, hopefully the noles are too.

by fsudude on Aug 1, 2009 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

I'm all for offering Ben McRoy!

because you’re the only reason I go over there!

by TRUSeminolez on Aug 2, 2009 3:48 AM EDT reply actions

Thats a very nice thing to say!

I’m flattered. I still post over there every now and then but I get frustrated with the deletion of posts that is notorious of Warchant. I understand the concept of “premium” information, but to intentionally limit conversation when it ain’t that serious anymore gets very old.

You don’t need to worry about that here. TN is the best-run Nole info site I’ve been to. Cream of the crop posters here.

by NoleThruandThru on Aug 2, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

You know that is why I love reading and contributing to this site.

When I first read the headline, I thought, Oh sheet! But after reading the comments I realized that while he is a good player, we are still on the verge of having a very respectable and envious DB class.

So thanks for what you guys do in keeping up with all this stuff and keeping us informed.

Noel = Warren

These kids don’t know where they want to go. I would rather lose him now then lose him in Feb. Let him go, we have some monsters getting ready to pull the committment trigger. Labor Day will be a big day for us if we can beat UM.

You know what Ive said this about CB's in Fl.

CB’s are a dime a dozen. We still have a while before we need to get worried, even then I dont think we will need to. This kid wants to go to WF good for him. I hope the best for him. We will get someone most likely better. If this would have been a LB I would be upset but its not so O-well.

Speaking of linebackers

It looks like Nigel Terrell cam back for another visit.

by DocHoliday2 on Aug 2, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

I heard family members made the trip as well

I think our chances at landing him just got better, unless something terribly went wrong over the weekend.
