Florida State's Offense Soars in the First Fall Scrimmage
It's still quite early, but it appears the ACC's top offense from a year ago is taking the next step to becoming a nationally elite attack. The 'Noles held their first scrimmage of the Fall this morning, and while it was closed to the public (and media), some news is trickling out.
The 'Noles offense is still very much run oriented, but it's stifled in the practice setting because the 'Noles run threat in quarterback Christian Ponder is negated by the green no-contact jersey (if the QB is touched, he is down). Anyone who saw Ponder run in a game knows that he is not easily arm tackled.
Throughout the Spring (10 yards per carry) and the early fall, the run game dominated. In today's scrimmage, the defense decided to stop the run. They brought their safeties down close to the line of scrimmage ("the box"), and dared the 'Nole offense to throw. The defense succeeded in slowing the run game, as Jermaine Thomas had only 36 yards on 8 carries.
You'll remember that Bert Reed told us about the responsibility the wide receivers to make big plays when teams over-commit to stopping the run. He was excited about the opportunities. And he should be. Teams will absolutely respect and key on the 'Nole's run game this year, where last year they did not. So today the defense gave the offense a preview of what other teams will likely run against FSU, and the offense responded. Big.
Christian Ponder was 15-20 for 287 yards and 4 TD's- NO Interceptions. The offense opened the scrimmage with three straight TD drives. Plays of 30+ yards were the norm. The pass protection appeared to be everything it was not last year, thanks to an average weight gain of 11lbs per man (and of course, another year in the system for what was the youngest offensive line in the game). Jarmon Fortson caught 3 balls for 108 yards. Fortson has really responded since Jimbo Fisher tore into him Tuesday morning, showing a more consistent focus, thinking about what he has to do each play- before the play, and looking the ball in.
Remember that the 1st team offense faced the 2nd team defense, and the 2nd team offense faced the 1st team defense. Keep it in perspective. It's still early.
For more on the scrimmage, see Andrew Carter's Bhopping Block Report and Steve Ellis' Democrat Report. The 1st team defense did a decent job against the 2nd team offense- including Jamie Robinson picking off ultra-talented but still raw quarterback EJ Manuel (remember he removed the periods from his name).
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Picking up where he left off following spring practice, junior quarterback Christian Ponder displayed poise in the pocket and accuracy through the air, highlighting the play in Florida State's first preseason scrimmage Saturday inside Doak Campbell Stadium.
While the Seminoles successfully balanced the run and the pass in the situational scrimmage, Ponder excelled, completing 15 of 20 attempts for 287 yards and four touchdowns. FSU quarterbacks Ponder, EJ Manuel, Will Secord and Ryan Becker spread the wealth, as 14 different players collected receptions, though no one player had more than three.
"I think the best thing about it was we came out with the right attitude," Ponder said of the scrimmage. "We're willing to work and compete, and I thought that was good. Obviously, we had some big plays. A lot of guys, when their number was called, came up with the big play which is something we need."
Best of all, the success of the passing game came in the face of an active pass rush.
"The defense put a little more pressure on (the quarterbacks) than they had in the past," said FSU coach Bobby Bowden, who liked what he saw from the passing game. "The pass rush was better."
FSU's defense made its share of plays as well. Free safety Jamie Robinson added another interception to his stout preseason performance. Robinson had a second interception erased by a defensive penalty.
"I did have some high expectations for myself (last season), wanting to make some big plays," said Robinson, who finished with four tackles. "It didn't really pan out like I thought last year, but it's really starting out pretty good this year."
Cornerback A.J. Alexander also collected an interception, but his touchdown return of the theft was wiped out by a defensive penalty. Defensive end Markus White had a 30-yard return after scooping up an errant pitch. Defensive end Toshmon Stevens had two sacks among his three tackles for loss, while linebacker Mister Alexander was in on two tackles for loss and also forced a fumble.
It was the kind of performance - with big plays on both sides - that flashed the teams' potential but also made them realize there is a lot of room to grown before the Sept. 7 opener against Miami.
"(We are) a young team that has ability, that will make plays at times and be very inconsistent at times," offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said. "We competed hard in the game. Even when bad things happened to us, we put it away and got on to the next play.
"I never saw guys dwelling on mistakes; never saw guys dwelling on big plays."
What Fisher did see was solid running from tailbacks Jermaine Thomas and Lonnie Pryor. Pryor, a freshman pressed into significant action due to injury, led the Seminoles with 51 yards on nine carries.
"I was proud of (Pryor)," Fisher said. "He's a tough 'ol nut. He'll stick his nose in there."
Thomas added 36 yards on eight carries.
Wide receiver Jarmon Fortson collected three receptions for 106 yards, while Rod Owens added three for 84, including a touchdown. Bowden singled out those two and tight end Caz Piurowski for standout performances.
White led the defense with six tackles, while linebacker Nigel Carr and safety Korey Mangum added five each.
"We could have done a little better," White said. "You can always get better. ... We just need to think better sometimes and play better mentally and from there, just keeping going up."
Chop talk
Freshman kicker Dustin Hopkins converted two field goals, including a long of 47 yards. ... James Esco was perfect on three PAT conversions, while Hopkins split the uprights on his two attempts. ... QB EJ Manuel overcame early-scrimmage jitters to lead the offense to a touchdown in a Red Zone series. Manuel completed both of his pass attempts, including an 11-yard scoring strike to freshman Josh Gehres. ... Freshman quarterback Will Secord connected with classmate Willie Haulstead on a 42-yard TD pass. ... The Seminoles closed out the morning scrimmage with four goal line plays. The defense managed two stops from the one, but both Thomas and Pryor scored on 3-yard runs. ... FSU planned to cap the day with a 90-minute, evening workout, focusing on the kicking game.

Good write-up and THANKS.
I am keeping the defense in perspective.
I’ve had it in perspective since last spring.
My perspective hasn’t changed :)
Something else that hasn’t changed: Mickey saying the D is not tough enough, not
trying hard enough, not focused enough….
When actually they’re just confused enough and out of position enough.
That's just Mickey...
Even when there was no doubt that the D was going to dominate, he has used these phrases to motivare the players. This is not something new, and anyone who has paid attention over the years knows this to be true. Now let’s just HOPE that’s all it is, and if not, how many butt kickings will it take.

My Perspective Hasn't Changed Either
The defense will liekly be as bad as the last few years. All it takes is players to be out of position and the other teams will have a field day. He doesn’t seem to be able to get them to do the right thing. Each coach has had an equal amount of time with the players and Jimbo’s guys aren’t confused and out of position at all from appearances and they’re quite young themselves. Why are Mickey’s? If his guys aren’t doing it now, when will they? It’s not going to automatically happen. If Christian had played the first team defense, he would still have had a great day as he’s been doing it all week. Maybe one less touchdown and 50 less yards. I only think we beat Miami because Jimbo literally wills it since he knows what’s at stake with the nation and recruits watching and in reality, they’re far from the best we will see this year. Especially in terms of what his offense will see. That won’t work against Georgia Tech, UF, North Carolina, and maybe NC State & Clemson. The defense will have to do their part in order for us to get victories in those games. I predict that Jimbo will be pretty mad at the coaches he doesn’t control by October because his offense will have put up very good numbers even in the games they lose and that could easily include UF. Therefore, it’ll be obvious whose fault it is.

It was the second team defense
You are right here of course though. If Fisher burns him enough just maybe Mickey will sit him down and say do you have any suggestions?
11 yard scoring strike to Geyres? The guy is still blowing up.
Great article made my day.

Nice Ponder
15-20 for 287 and 4 tds. If he takes this big of a leap throwing the ball this year, this will be one of the better offenses in the nation. Unfortunately, we still don’t know how real this is because it could simple be a result of our inexperienced defense.
Fortson and Haulstead with big plays. Love our Wrs potential.
Well...
Ponder looks to have benefited from getting extra reps in the spring.
However, as many have pointed out, this is against the second team of an above-average defense (but not an elite defense like UF’s). The question remains: how will we fair against Clemson and UF’s D?
I’m also excited about the possibility of a ball-hawking safety in JRob. How long has it been since we’ve had one of those?
Hopefully, this will be White’s breakout year. Leading the team in tackles at DE is impressive, even if it is in a scrimmage…
Stand by...
I stand by what I said earlier… Ponder vs. McCoy or Bradford with equal offensive line play. I take Ponder because of the ability to extend plays/drives with his legs. He’s handicapped in scrimmages because of the green jersey.
Just the potential w/ this line this year makes me giddy
McCoy led his team in rushing iirc
McCoy runs as well as Ponder, it just got lost in the crazy passing numbers. I get what you are saying though and hope for a big jump from one season to the next the same as McCoy had.

I think the ACC Def are better than the big 12
The big 12 has better Off all around. they have bigger line man, good TE and good WR with bigger backs. I think we could hang this year with them for the most part. I realy like Ttec Offense though. Its killer fast.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
Best news of the day...
No loss of Def or Off linemen!
Excited for the offense!!
I also feel better our 1st team defense didn’t get dominated. I expect it from our second string defense because of lack of depth.
Apparently they're getting open and making the catches for big plays
I’m kind of shocked that Easterling, Reed and Goodman’s names didn’t come up in this report. Maybe they made plays that weren’t “leaked” lol. I gotta admit I expected little to know info on today’s scrimmage other than what seminoles.com would have to offer
most likely the Def had them on lock and the others were open because they didnt think them as much a threat.
Its like Carr and PP last year couldnt get them open so we went to easterling and Reed.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
Truth is
We have some second team defensive backs quite a few teams would like to have though. I can’t think of any of them off hand that were not highly recruited other than Mangum.
I’d like to believe if Ponder is having time to throw he would burn the first team defense also.

I'd like to see ones v. ones for the latter half of practice
It would give a better game prep experience. I’d think Miami’s 1’s are Prob better than our 2’s.

I guess it's good
…that MA and crew are getting torched now in preparation for the spread offenses we’ll face this season.
Seriously, though, I’d be more upset if they were dominating in summer practices and crap during the season. I think part of what we’re seeing is Jimbo’s Offensive philosophy vs. MA’s “speed kills” cover 0/1, and MA not being able to keep up.
Credit the Offensive Line for protecting the ball carriers and QBs. Rushing totals definitely lower than in past, but still respectable (>4.5 ypc). I’ll take 15-20 from Ponder, yes sir.
Jarmon in my opinion is key to our success this season
He is the difference of at least a game or two which could be the difference between BCS or Charlotte Bowl game.
I agree, especially if he blocks well this season
Also, in case anyone wants to know, he goes by J-mon (“Jay-mon”).
J Mon or j man?
Serious question.

The scary thing
Its scary thinking the offense did all that, especially with you pointing out the threat of Ponder running taken away, not to mention three running backs still nursing injuries. I am happy for the offense, but hope the defense gets better. Second string or not, as much as our coaches like to rotate guys its like saying 1A versus 1B.
Haven't had internet access for a while, I missed reading TN!!!
I am happy to read this update, lots of positive signs from the offense. Very pleased to hear good things about Hopkins. Also pleased to see consistency from JRob.
Is Tavares Pressley still unable to participate in game situations?

Word is

i seriously think
that our offense can average in the 30’s points wise a game, we just need markus to keep gettin sacks, and jrob makin big plays in the secondary and we will have a very good team this year.
and alot of positives came out of this article, jarmon seems to be evolving into the playmaker we all think he can be, and hopkins wont be no slouch speacial teams wise.
im excited.
Well Just Maybe...
Fortson has turned a corner. If he gets his mental part of the game to match his physical tools he will be an absolute stud. Much happier to hear about him catching balls than getting face time for messing up.
Not an alcoholic, just an FSU grad.
I expect a big year out of Fortson.
He is a freakish athlete.
question....
a.j alexander…what can we expect from him?
i heard he has great speed, and in today’s scrimmage he had a int return for a touchdown (albeit called back) and saved a touchdown by tackling the man-child jarmon fortson, pretty impressive.
can we expect big things from him this season?
He got a pick...is he taking reps with the first team?
It’s 1’s vs 2’s, no? EJ’s would’ve been throwing against the 1’s, and Ponder didn’t throw any picks. I wonder who else has been taking reps with the ones.
oooooor maybe Mickey’s working in more nickel/dime packages. Hmm.
I don’t think he’s make huge defensive contributions (I’d love to be wrong), but he’ll probably be seeing the field a lot returning kicks/punts.

Big Ups to the OL
The only way to go 15-20 for 287 is by keeping the QB clean.
Add me the list to be beyond overjoyed to read a practise report without an addition to the injury list.
Mind you if he's touched he's sacked.
Basically meaning he got the ball out before the pass rush was able to get to him
That Lonnie Pryor...
really sounds like a bad fit for our system……
I think he's referring to the fact that...
Lonnie’s ESPN evaluation mentioned him not being a good fit for a zone blocking scheme like the one we have here, and FSUn agreed with it.
He had some success, but it doesn't mean he's the perfect back for the system.
He’s got talent, and if he works had to develop better vision of where the holes are opening at (which come naturally to some), he’s can do very well.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.
Elayne Boosler
well he might now be good for the zone block but
dont we also run a lot of pro style stuff. We have so many RB some will see the field as a RB some a FB or in the Pony, some will see it out of the Slot and other WR pos. They all have there perpous and I think Jimbo knows why he has them here.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
My issue with lonnie has always been his style. I think he is a momentum builder and our backs have to go 50% speed then 100 speed. Speed through the hole, not speed to the hole.
I still think Lonnie could be a really, really good safety.
His safety clips on Rivals were very good.
Getting a little crowded at safety, isn't it?
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.
Elayne Boosler
Sarcasm? Indeed
I’m referring to my TN boys. I agree with RB’s fitting into a system to a point, but I think it’s been way overblown. Especially in an EFFECTIVE zone blocking scheme. If the OL is opening up running lanes on a CONSISTENT basis(in whatever blocking scheme), any RB with descent ability can have success.
RB’s for the most part, come a dime a dozen for me. I’m much bigger on competitiveness and durability. Theirs maybe 1 or 2 RB’s a year that are a big step above the rest of the rest.
Disagree
Antone Smith being example #1.

Antone ran with his eyes closed
constantly running into the backs of defenders and often fell on first contact. Last year he ran behind the best line at FSU in 4 years. Consequently he probably had his best season.
Damn... I should've proof-read.... oh well
How about Toshman Stevens stepping up!
