Colquitt County (GA) DL Cameron Erving Commits to the Florida State Seminoles!
The Moultrie Observer is reporting that 6'5" 285lb Defensive Tackle Cameron Erving, of Moultrie (GA) Colquitt County High School, has committed to the Florida State Seminoles. There is very little information available on this kid, but we'll do our best. Apparently FSU offered him on Junior Day (early Spring), so we are not sure why he announced it tonight. Maybe because his season starts Friday night?
He is 6'5" and 285lbs. We've been very vocal about the need for FSU to beef up their defensive line, and it's been rumored that Florida State Head Coach in Waiting (HCIW) and Offensive Coordinator Jimbo Fisher has been campaigning for this as well (maybe having his offense run all over the 'Nole's speed-only defense in practice has gone a long way in exposing FSU's lack of bulk on the defensive interior). Our recruiting team indicates that FSU is recruiting larger players (FSU fans, thank God on this one. Seriously. These 280-lb defensive "tackles" are no more). FSU is looking for bigger defenders as offenses continually look to take advantages of defenses that are based solely on speed (as FSU's has been in the latter part of this decade, unfortunately). Their current recruiting class reflects that shift in philosophy.
Does this mean that FSU is slipping for someone like Damien Jacobs, Brandon Willis, or Anthony "AMP" McCloud? No, nothing we've seen indicates that FSU is slipping for these players. What this might indicate, however, is that FSU is really intent on re-stocking the defensive line and might take only 4 defensive backs, but as many as 8 defensive linemen. That's a good thing. Defensive linemen are infinitely more important than defensive backs.
Erving is unrated by every single service on the planet. There are no pictures of him and no video. He doesn't have a facebook and doesn't appear to have a myspace. But he is 6'5" 285. He must have really impressed FSU's coaches during his Early spring visit for them to offer him.
In an interesting bit of news, the coach for CCHS is Rush Probst, the former of Head Coach of Hoover High School (Hoover, AL), featured in MTV's "Two-A-Days." He has produced a ton of talent, though that could be because he's an excellent coach, or because Hoover may engage in some recruiting practices typically frowned upon for a public high school. Nole fans hope he is a great coach and not a high school recruiter. We won't go into the circumstances regarding his departure from Hoover, but you can google it if you like. It sounds like Erving needs to become more consistent and refine his technique.
It's encouraging that FSU continues to hit South Georgia hard, where some of the best football in the country is played.
Here's FSU's class, as it now stands:

Very interesting
So add in McCloud, who will be here in Jan, and very likely Brandon Willis, and possibly Damien Jacobs… I am very happy with that DT class. Perhaps this can be a wake-up call for Tavares Barnes, who is known to be looking around.

I would bet this means we miss on Jacobs....
Maybe they heard LSU was going to offer…
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

I really like the fact that we finally went back to looking at a map when it comes to recruiting.
Moultrie, Thomasville, and Valdosta produce some great players… and they are a lot closer to Tallahassee than a lot of other places we’ve wasted our time recruiting in the past.
In fact, they are closer than virtually every other major program we can recruit from (Tallahassee schools and Madison as the exception).
Oh, side note...
I also really like Moultrie because it is the closest city to Tallahassee with an operating Krystal franchise. Whenever I need my square burger fix I can drive there. Or I guess I could just take I10 to exit 283 Live Oak…
And I’ve just lost the room….
Fresh. Hot. Small. Square.

I’m opening a Krystal on Tennessee Street.
It’s the perfect food to cap a night of bad decisions.
Maybe I'm wrong
But wasn’t there a Krystal on Tenn St or in Tally some years ago?

I've heard legends, but that was before my time.
But sometimes you hear tall-tales by some of the old-timers who remember the days when the burgers flowed like honey.
I think the decline of our football team in the 2000s can be directly attributed to the closure of the Krystal on Tennessee Street and of the Fuddrucker’s off Capital Circle NE.
(based on no evidence whatsoever)
Although our football team would be drastically different if there were still a Krystal around.
Holloway would be working on his 8th heart attack by now, Aubrey Phillips wouldn’t have been able to find a plane big enough to carry his butt back to Mississippi, and Budd Thacker wouldn’t be so tiny.
In fact, the hold up in Trickett’s contract earlier this year might have been the stipulation that Tallahassee can never offer those delicious tiny burgers to his linemen.
Haa I worked at that Fuddruckers in the late 90's
lots of young hotties did also…..ahh the good old days
Reminds me of

when did Live Oak get a Krystal's?
I guess I’ve just been gone too long — went to high school there, and my mom still lives there. Might have just revealed with that last one how long since I’ve visited her – but she was out to see me not too long ago.

Few years ago.
Exit 283 has a Walmart and a Krystal now. Taco Bell too.
It’s the fundamental reason why I can’t get from Tallahassee to Jacksonville in less than 2.5 hours no matter how fast my car can go.
I believe the correct pronunciation in the local dialect is cry-tal
No “s” required.
Interesting
Could be insurance for Barnes, could be a decision for 8 DL and 4 DB’s, could mean a lot of things. This could be a busy day for recruiting with the Terrell announcement.
Swagger, Intensity, Execution
Irving
played DE last year according to his hometown paper. If FSU is bulking up the line, some of these guys who we suspect as being on the interior could go outside.
With three seniors, and the recent revelation of how closely McCray is being monitored with his “athlete’s heart”, we could well face a situation that only two guys or fewer from this year’s roster is on the roster in 2011 (say that since Mincey may redshirt this year and be back in 2010). FSU’s got to be targeting signing at least four DTs this year.

Big props
to the coaching staff for apparently doing their HW (unlike another Def. coach of ours). Geographically, you have to be excited that the mindset of our staff is to really go after kids less than 200 miles from FSU; that they believe there is enough talent in N. Fla. and S. Ga. to win an NC, and I’m starting to believe they’re correct.
Ho hum
I just can’t get excited over this. I’ll have to at least hear something that makes it seem like a nice pickup. Height/weight + location isn’t enough.

Me too.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the kid committed. And I give out a big WELCOME CAMERON.
But I have no idea what to talk about with this kid… hence the fast food discussion above.
well someone might know look at there schedule
his school playes 2 teams we like to recruit from with Valdosta and Lowndes. Jimbo prob called there HC and asked if they know any big DT. They might have gave up the name.

Haha - my sentiments exactly.
Isn’t this guy a little too tall to be playing tackle? Ideally, don’t you want a guy in the 6’0" – 6’3" range for leverage?
Then again...
I’m a little pleased yet concerned that our coaches accepted a guy that NO ONE’S EVEN HEARD OF. Pleased because MAYBE it means that we have somebody doing actual evaluations. Concerned because there might be a reason that no one’s ever heard of him…
I also read the article and his HS coach made statements that sounded like the kid needs motivation. I don’t know anything about this coach, so I guess I could be reading too much into coachspeak.
Like Dan Football? Derek Alexander?
Half the NFL DL?
6’5 is fine. He just needs coaching and practice to learn leverage.
I think in college, it is okay to be a 6'5" tackle
In the pro ranks, it might be a bit tougher.
by Bud Elliott on Aug 27, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
but a guy that is 6'5 and 285lb right now
what kind of weight could he gain. I dont know how his shoulders look but Im sure he has room to grow. you dont have to have Leverage to throw bodies around it just helps. (A lot I know) Think of the health problems a 6’0 300lb guy has that a 6’5 300lb guy doesnt. This is a good thing because hes ether the best DT we have in this class or another body that we dont have this year for the road down the line right.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
keep this in mind when looking at the DL numbers
McClouid can count towards last years class and D-linemen, in general, have a tougher time qualifying and staying qualified than other position groups. I’m not making assuptions based on our guys or recruits, but its not a bad idea to have an extra guy in every class.
OH YEAAHH!

How are we taking so many DL?
Yeah we’re hurting for depth but 8 DL in one class? If I was a DL I’d want no part of that (and don’t bring up that “don’t be afraid of competition” crap, at some point numbers are numbers) – It also seems like we’re loading up on every single position on the defense – secondary, linebackers, linemen. If my math is right we’re projecting almost 17 defensive commitments. Isn’t that quite a bit?
It feels like as soon as we have depth on one position we get complacent the next recruiting cycle and then we end up with no depth the next year. Kind of like we recruited a sick LB class 2 years ago and then just didn’t do much last year and now we’re thin there. The offense is young, but the only way you keep it from being young again is by building depth.

I'd agree
I’d say sign four this year, four next year rather than 8 this year.
If we were to sign more than four true interior linemen, make a couple juco types. That shores up the depth without bunching them all in one “class”.
If we do end up signing more than four, look for some to slide outside, or to secretly be Trickett recruits to be moved to the OL.

FSU has 13 DL on scholarship....
4 graduate.
IF NOBODY gets hurt, fails out, doesn’t qualifiy, or has off field issues (chances of that….ZERO). That means you have 13 again next year.
A college program shoots for 15-16 on scholarship.
Why…..WHY would you keep yourself at the same (really less because you WILL lose someone) by signing only 4? Makes zero sense. You need 6 just to get you to 15….and again, that assumes NO losses.
I would like to have 24 DL+LB on scholarship at any time.
by Bud Elliott on Aug 27, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I go 15-16 DL and 11-12 LB at ALL TIMES
That gives you the ability to have 12 DBs.
Perfect.
FSU has gone years now without enough bodies on the front 7 and other schools figured it out. Just run right at FSU.
FSU’s small with little depth strategy had BC work FSU defense last year like a pediphile in the big house, that should NEVER happen.
We need them. I'd like to take 9 DL and 3 DB's. We simply have no depth there.
And the defense heavy class is a reaction to the piss poor recruiting done by this defensive staff in 2006 and 2007.
We have lots of redshirt kids this year on offense.

Rotation
You need to be able to rotate (ideal) 3 guys at each spot for maximum efficiency and to get reps in case of injury, loss to the draft, academics, etc. Thats 12 just for the rotation.
Cedat Fortuna Peritis
I agree...
FSU returns the following next year:
McCray
McDaniel
McAllister
White
Stevens
Jackson
Jenkins
Dawkins
That is 8 by my count. You sign 7 AT LEAST and you are at my low level target of 15 DL.
The issue here is…..even signing 7, you assume you lose NOBODY for any reason and you are still at the low number for total DL needed.
Odell and Allen screwed this position.
It's not that we don't need them
but it sets up recruiting problems in future years.
If the numbers justify 8 this next class, and assuming you get the quality, it hurts recruiting for 2011. In essence, you’re setting up to repeat the problem in four years.
Better to take 4-6 this year, and 4 or so next year. Smooth it out. Alternatively, if you take the 8 this year, make 2 or 3 of the JUCO transfers. McCloud would be one, sort of. He’ll have to three years to play three when he arrives, as it was earlier reported on TN he’s sitting out this year in JUCO in order to have those three for three. Bringing in two other JUCO gets the numbers there, plus gets them cycled out of the system sooner, putting less burden on getting a big recruiting class of DL again in 2014.
by Wild@Heart Nole on Aug 27, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Nothing normal attrition, redshirting, etc take care of....
I think it is smart. Trickett showed that.
The 8 was proposed here at TN not by the coaching staff.
I think we will take closer to 6, but the focus is DL bulk in the middle and that’s good.
WE still have the makings of a solid WR class. Trickett always gets the guys HE wants, and from 2-3 RB’s on the way too.
I don’t think it will end up bieng an overballanced class at all.
Yeah, right!
Irving
I will try and watch him when he plays against Wayne County on 9-11-09…..I live in Jesup Ga and it’s not a problem to make it.

So, is Trickett recruiting for the d-line now as well?
This is very Trickett-esque (although a little early of a commitment to be a true Trickett find).
I believe this is a DT.
There’s also a chance this is a step to get in at this HS. If Probst sets up shop at CCHS, recruits local talent, and does to their grades what he did at Hoover, then FSU will have some great athletes who ordinarily would have no shot at qualifying, and they will have received some good coaching as well. If you catch my drift.
by Bud Elliott on Aug 27, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions
Propst would be good for us
I am from Prattville(go lions!) and he will do the same thing a colquitt he did at Hoover. Kids with huge talent will magically appear, their grades will get better, and Propst will make sure Colquitt has first rate strength and conditioning programs and facilities. He will also set up feeder programs as far down as flag football and pop warner (ala Valdosta when Hyder was there). Mark it down, Colquitt will be a force. The talent level in south georgia is better than central alabama, so Propst is gonna kill it. JMHO. Get in now, cause Propst definitely steers his kids to programs that treat him well.

Talent
When Propst says a kid has the talent and just needs to apply it consistently, you can bet he will be in this kids rear end all season long. NOT someone I would want in my ear every day.
Cedat Fortuna Peritis
He absolutely gets results. Are you still in Pratville? I'm headed to see Nigel Terrell today up in Pelham

Prattville
No. I moved to San Antonio two years ago to work for Toyota. I make go see Holmes play.
Cedat Fortuna Peritis
I know
He is already at it and he brought to guys from Mobile to Moultrie just this past year. Something is up in the air here in mOUltrie. I don’t care for the guy but at the same time he will be ran out of town if he ever caught.
Feeder Programs
Appling County in Baxley uses the feeder program for Pop Warner…..and have since the late 80’s………all the teams from there run the same Offense and Defense as the High School…I think that is a big reason why they come up with some great prospects at times even though they are 2-A…..Dexter Carter, Carl Simpson, Lewis Tyre to name a few.
Smart really…..until some coach comes along who thinks he’s Bear Bryant of the Pop Warner League and changes it to his “Spread attack” LOL
They would boot him for sure before that could happen.

I might not be that far off on the Trickett thing...
“Coach (Rush) Propst is high on him and says he has a big upside. He said Cameron was recruited by FSU as a D-lineman but wouldn’t be surprised if they tried him on the offensive line.” – from Chantrant interview with Wayne Grandie, Sports Editor of the Moultrie Observer.
Also, this would be another great “pipeline” if we can get in good with Probst.
Hopefully Jimbo is now controlling the recruiting on both sides of the ball.
If he wants to sign 8 DL then I have no problem with it. If this is still a MA/CA production I would just hope for the best, knowing that 2-3 of them wouldn’t qualify anyway.
Ed Christian vs. Cameron Erving
This should be a good fight if they get to go against each other!
about this Erving guy this tells me one thing about FSU recruiting now.
We are hitting the small schools too. We are going to the back neck schools and looking for people. We are not going after the ESPN top recruits but we are going after something else. The guys coach made a statment about how FSU coaches are doing there homework. I agree. We the fans might not no a thing about him but unless The DE coach or CTC recruited him Im sure Someone saw something in him to get him to comit.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
finally!
i think jimbo fisher, along with rick trickett are bringing a bigger SEC kind of athlete. FSU has always had speed, but lack ideal size for last few years. Oh yeah by the way i’m new member, and i happen to live SOONER land. GO NOLES!
Watched Cameron Play tonight
I just got through watching CCHS beat up on Wayne County here in Jesup 38-6…..Cameron only played in the first half because of the rout and because he was limping late in the 2nd quarter.
He is really tall, a legit 6’5 and shaped kinda strange in that he is a little small in the shoulders and upper body but has really big thighs. He’s not a “Fat Body” by any means and does look like his frame can carry 300+ easy.
CCHS played a hybrid type of 4-3 and most of the time walked the safety up (Wayne County runs the ball 97% of the time cause they are an option team) almost equal with the LB’s. Cameron played the DT/NT positon all night rotating from side to side, and lining up on the guards….he was double and even somtimes triple teamed (with the running back lead blocker) most plays……he does a really good job of holding the point of attack and not being pushed back even against multiable blockers (center guard comb’s) ….CCHS stuffed the run most of the time with him and the other NT/DT…on the few passing plays I saw (3 or 4) he didnt collapse the pocket or generate a big push from the middle….he hustled on all the plays he was in….even when it would be a sweep to the other sideline he kept pursuing…….he is going to be a project that needs some upper body strength and better conditioning (There were a few times late 1st quarter he had his hands on his knees and was bent over)….not good conditioning considering they usually went 3 and out on defense. Like I said though, he is really good at the point of attack and stuffing the run…..so thats what you really want from a DT anyway…..just my opinion he projects as a DT/NT better at the next level then DE….he doesn’t possess a “BURST” or elite speed for his position….more of a plodder at this juncture. One other thing sorta off point….CCHS’s kicker was awesome!!! He put the ball out of the endzone on most every kickoff!!
Thanks for the report!
How many South Georgia football games do you get to? Thomasville, Thomas County Central, Lowndes, Valdosta, ect.
