Thoughts on our DC situation
I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but I was just introduced to TN recently and haven't heard much in the way of candidates for the job. I have a couple thoughts/questions and would appreciate the feedback/input from the Nation.
A) Wouldn't it be valuable, especially for recruiting, if MA annouced his retirement so we could give our recruits an idea of who they would be playing for next year. Assuming JF makes this hire, this would make starting next year under said DC more attractive than under MA and bonehead staff.
2) What are the chances of replacing Jody Allen with this "DCIW" as Special Teams coach? It seems to me that while a mid-season coaching change can be chaotic, this particular squad has no where to go but up - and the obvious improvement would be a testament to the abiilty of the new DC (even though Sloth, from the Goonies, could probably coach these guys up better than JA).
D) Unrelated to the above, but has anyone seen what Mike Singletary built at the 49ers camp? The Hill of Pain: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2009/03/22/SPUI16KU04.DTL&o=0 - SC did a short on this that was pretty interesting, they also listed off a bunch of Hall of Famers who have used hill training throughout their careers. I think this falls right in line with creating the toughness Jimbo talks about, we could also entomb the d-staff inside while building it...
Thoughts on any of this happening?

Two things...
I think it is probable that Terrell Buckley takes over for Mickey coaching the DBs… and I believe our DB recruits are being told that.
Secondly, I think the uncertainity with the defensive coaches’ futures is why we have offensive coaches recruiting the top prospects on defense. Fisher and Coley (the two who are guaranteed to stay more than any other coach on staff) are recruiting LJ, Jeff Luc, etc.
Even without knowing who the new coaches will be, recruits can get to know Jimbo and James and know that whoever is hired will be of the same mold. Some one who will shoot straight, work hard, and prepare the team as best as he possibly can. We’ve seen the results they can have with our offense, imagine what someone of that ilk could do with our defense. I can promise that if you like Jimbo Fisher, you’ll like the next Defensive Coordinator.
\end recruiting pitch
Yeah...
Don’t forget we earn a new coaching position in 2011.
Our new DC could be the “Shoe Tying Coach” for all I care.
MattD was just giving his own post an acronym
i.e. EHCSMB = Executive Head Coach of Shoes and Massive Boobs
Why
Steele just gave up 30 points to Georgia Tech about what Mickey did last year? It is kind of funny when you think about it. Mickey gives up 30 and the tar and feathers are being readied and Steele gives us 30 and people want him back. I would probably still take Steele though.
Playstation All American, right again!

Better to bear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools
No, he didn't.
He gave up 16 points. Mickey gave up 31.
Steele gave up 6.25 per play, Mickey gave up 8.4
Steele is much better than Mickey.
Steele has been bad mouthing FSU on the recruiting trail
chances of him coming back are slim and none.. and Slim got his ass kicked.
Steele wants to be a HC.
Potential canidates for DC:
Greg Hudson – East Carolina DC (ties to Jimbo from when they were at Cincinnati together)
Bio: http://www.ecupirates.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/hudson_greg00.html
Manny Diaz – Middle Tennessee St DC (Miami native and former FSU Grad like Coley)
Bio : http://www.goblueraiders.com/coach.cfm/name/manny-diaz/id/279
Hudson and Diaz
If we make those hires, I would expect Diaz to take over at LB, and Hudson at DC. T-Buck would then coach CB’s.
Who would take on special teams/defensive ends? Would Diaz or Hudson pull double duties at any of those two positions? Or is there another name or two out there rumored to replace J. Allen and take on those duties?
FSU Defensive Coordinator Candidates
I ve done some research on this myself and here are my list of guys:
Promote Odell Haggins (makes the most sense recruiting wise)
Kevin Steele (Was the DCIW, developed Lawrence Timmons, but imo will be the next HC at South Carolina after Spurrier leaves)
Bradley Dale Peveto (Apart of the LSU Natl title staff. Got Fired, and is HC at Northwestern St)
Kirby Smart (Alabama DC, would have more authority than Nick Saban gives him, and FSU Alumni)
Gene Chizik (From Clearwater. After Auburn falls apart, and the War Eagles try to lynch him)
Kurt VanValkenburgh (FAU co-DC, and could really help with South Florida recruiting)
Greg Hudson – East Carolina DC (ties to Jimbo from when they were at Cincinnati together)
Raheem Morris (TB Bucs HC, but dont be surprised if they let him go early. His youth would really help out for recruiting)
Manny Diaz – Middle Tennessee St DC (Miami native and former FSU Grad like Coley)
And WarChant reported that Terrell Buckley is coaching the DBs and helping with Recruiting.
NoleInsider did a really good article too on the JF New look coaching stuff. Talked about bringing in Derrick Brooks as LB coach, and someone from Va Tech to run Special Teams. Forgot who they said the new DC would be.
No chance on Odell
It’ll be somebody from the outside. We need some new blood on that side of the ball.

Welcome!
Good post.
O’Dell has basically no shot because DL don’t make good DC’s. Lack of smarts and understanding of a defense. Same for WR’s and RB’s as OC’s.
Some rumors that we irked Steele when he left for Bama, and I think he wants to be a HC. FSU is a lateral move from Clemson basically.
Good good thinking on Peveto! Hadn’t gone back that far.
Kirby Smart would be my #1 choice, but can we get him?
Chizik would be a fine choice as well, good coordinator.
Hadn’t considered VanValnenburgh, smart thinking.
Hudson seems to be everyone’s favorite.
Morris is smart, but that’s a big dropoff from an NFLHC to a CFB DC.
Diaz seems like a good possibility.

What about Mike Stoops if he loses his job at Arizona? He was a good DC for Oklahoma in the early part of this decade. If Notre Dame fires Charlie Weiss and his whole staff is let go we could get their DC, as he was good when at GT (for what talent he had).
Tenuta is Mickey JR...
Blitz, blitz, blitz….
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.
Elayne Boosler
Let's see how Tenuta plays Michigan this weekend.
He handled Nevada really really well.

Many fans dissed Steele while here and wished we had Amato back..
now many diss Amato and wish Steele were back. To outsiders we sure would look like fair weather fans. Hard to please fans also.
This would be my wishlist:
1. Kirby Smart- in his 30’s- works with DB’s at Alabama, coached safeties for Saban with the Dolphins and running backs at UGA. Hell of a recruiter.
2. Greg Hudson- currently 42 years old, still relatively young- coaches LBs at ECU, has also worked briefly with safeties, o-line and running backs- high energy guy, builds bruising, extremely physical defenses.
I do think Manny Diaz will land at FSU, but not as DC- he seems to be a defensive-minded Coley clone in energy and enthusiasm (in his 30’s). He has a history coaching safeties and linebackers, but also a background as a special teams coordinator at NC State which could make him a great fit at FSU.
I hope we can keep Odell, but I would prefer him to coach the entire DL- I think he’d do well with it.
I would love the new defensive staff to look like one of these:
DC- Kirby Smart
LBs/Special teams- Manny Diaz
DBs- Terrell Buckley
DL- Odell Haggins
OR
DC/LBs- Greg Hudson
CBs- Terrell Buckley
S/ Special teams- Manny Diaz
DL- Odell Haggins

You bring up a VERY interesting point.
Being Recruiting Coordinator at a FBS school is more than a full time job. If Coley is expected to take over as the OC when Jimbo gets his promotion, it might be a bit much to ask of him to stay on as our Recruiting guy.
If we could get Diaz in here as a position coach only, and let him be the Recruiting Coordinator, we wouldn’t miss a bit in our recruiting.
I hate that we internet fans restrict ourselves to Hudson and Diaz, but for the sake of example I’ll use those two.
Imagine this off-season.
*Mickey retires, and Chuck and Jody aren’t retained.
*Hudson is hired as DC/LB coach, Buckley is hired as DB coach, and Stroud is given DEs. In this scenario we’d be looking for a new Strength and Conditioning coach, but we’d have a heck of a defensive staff.
*Once Bobby retires we pick up another position coach, allowing Diaz to be our Special Teams and Recruiting Coordinator.
FSUn
Is TCU’s d-coordinator a guy we’re looking at? I know they had one of the best D’s in the country last year, but I don’t remember us talking about the guy Bumpas too much. Anyway, they’re coming to slaughter UVa today and I’d be more than happy to take some notes on what he does if y’all think he’s a guy we could be looking at.
Swagger, Intensity, Execution
What are you guys talking about..Clearly Amato is just going to take over at DC when Mickey retires...
Bwaahha..haaaa…..haaa…haaa….no freaking chance. Later Chuckie..thanks for ripping us off for 3 years so you can back into that state pension.
Tyrone Nix
What do you guys think about Tyrone Nix from Ole Miss(use to be South Carolina D-Coor.) replacing Mickey as D-coor.
I am going to beat this drum until somebody hear me!!!
Tyrone Nix is young and he knows how the recruit the GA. area well
I'm fine with the proposed mid-season switch to Sloth from Goonies as Special Teams Coach.
Having spoken to some former players, I can reasonably conclude that Baby Ruth bars are more effective motivating tools than whatever Jody Allen attempts to provide
“Hey You Guys!!!” would be the new rally call to pump up the kick coverage teams.
D-Staff
First of all, Tyrone Nix’s next stop is head coach (coughLouisvillecough). Good call though.
Keep Mario Cristobal in mind too guys. He is turning it around at FIU, but if he doesnt make it happen, he would be a helluva hire for us at DC.
Bottom line: JF needs to have the authority to bring his D-staff in NOW before more recruits decommit. Mickey is not coaching DBs and he’s not recruiting Defensive players either. Coley, Fisher, and Haggins are doing the most of the work there.
Look for JF to make a hire soon. Probably bring in Diaz/ Peveto/ Hudson in now, or get the word out that JF is going after Kirby Smart on the recruiting trail so some AL commits start looking at FSU seriously.
Kirby Smart tid bit
No surprise , but he also personally recruited Jacobbi McDaniel and Greg Reid to come to Alabama.
I think criticizing Haggins at this point in regards to recruiting
Is a little unfair IMO; being that he is probably the only one on the D side that has a chance of being retained right now, it’s not like he’s got a whole lot to tell D recruits, “Hey I have no idea who you will be playing for next year since the whole D staff will be gone, and add to that the real head coach is still our OC, but by all means please come here”
I’m sure knowing that Mickey is out the door, negative recruiting galore is happening right now.
One thing I know is I hope to heck that Mickey announces asap after either the UF game or ACCCG that he is retiring and the DC search gets underway the next day and someone is on staff the day after bowl season ends and hopefully able to salvage our defensive recruiting for the year.
You make a great point with respect to the Haggins criticism!
Recruiting ANY elite defenders based on what we currently show deffensively is a tall order.
Yeah, right!
