Mickey Andrews, Jimbo Fisher, and Christian Ponder Press Conference
Note: left out much of the generic praise for BYU. Tried to include the specifics. These are not exact quotes, but should be close and do capture the general gist of what they said.
Mickey Andrews
- We gave up 150 yards as freshmen were trying to gain experience.
- We finished a lot better in the fourth quarter
- on BYU: They are as deep at running back as any team we’ll play. The quarterback gets rid of the football in a hurry and the TE may be the be the best in the country
- We have to be able to win 1-on-1’s with our pass rush to be successful.
- Pleased with the way Nick Moody stepped into the starting lineup. McNeil could be as good a player as we’ve got on defense. He’s working as hard as he can at practice.
- on Jacobbi McDaniel: He’s a big strong kid and forcing that fumble was a big play for us. He’s making progress, he’s just scratching the surface right now.
- Dekoda Watson: He runs faster than most coming around the end and he has great ability to get to the quarterback.
- First game Greg Reid kid had a ton of big plays, this game he missed the opportunities for big plays.
- BYU runs a lot more screens this year.
- Reduced numbers of missed assignments and tackles but nowhere near being satisfied.
- It’s the consistency you play at, provided you’re playing at a level which helps your team.
- Players win football games, coaches don’t win football games.
- On playing old offenses versus new offenses [we've discussed this at length]: Shut down the 2 wide receivers, shut them down, put your other 9 on what’s left, and just win. Now, if i can’t block you, I just most you out of the box (spread). Now they are going to split you out, count your numbers, and decide where to run. never had to defend against the QB unless you’re playing against an option team. Now the defensive calls you have to make are totally different than you do when they are bunched up.
- Dionte Allen had his best ballgame since he’s been here. had 1 or 2 sacks. dropped an intercept.
Jimbo Fisher and Christian Ponder inside...
FSU Offensive Coordinator Jimbo Fisher
- Jermaine Thomas was banged up with the knee (Miami game), tweaked it in practice, and it was a coaches’ decision not to play him much. Not in the doghouse, just had a few guys who were a little healthier.
- Tye running good, ball security has been good, being more responsible and taking care of himself better. Good pass blocker, better receiver than I thought. like all the young guys, he’s learning to practice at a high level.
- I don’t think people realize the effects a 5 day turnaround has on these kids, can’t prepare, hangover. You’d never play a Thursday after a Saturday game. I tell our guys though, time don’t matter, time moves on.
- On the ineffectiveness of the run game at times: At times we had some great runs that bounced and we didn’t make our receiver blocks, but we also missed some plays inside. Uncharacteristic. Everyone was just slightly off.
- What do you take from the OU-BYU game? BYU very sound #92 is great. very sound in coverage, mix up their looks a lot, very well coached.
- It does help (that jstate played a 3-4 defensive alignment like BYU does), hopefully those 2 days will help us with some of the intricacies and angles. They do a great job of being multiple.
- Pass protection issues- mental? Yes, just plain blown assignments. olinemen. backs ran past linebackers twice. more mental, not physical
- Mind was a bit slow for everyone. Head not in the game.
- Fisher on BYU: I still think some guys were dwelling on the Miami game and that didn’t help us but BYU should bring some emotion back into our team. I hope we take it to the practice field this week.
- Goodman as go-to guy: Goodman does a great job as a senior and has done a better job working in space. just had to get the opportunities. Rich does it in the meetings too. He’s very mature and has it together mentally. Young guys need to see that goodman is preparing to have success.
- Christian can get us in and out of the good plays. Very valuable. Some QB's can't.
- Ponder staying in the pocket- comes with confidence in the OLine and knowledge. He has gone through all 5 progressions at times.
- Beating BYU’s blitz is a team effort. Running the ball, and making the site and hot adjustments with the receivers.
- We are 1-cut runners, make one cut, use your speed, and get upfield (said in reference to some of the end around plays. Bert Reed needs to trust his teammates that their blocks will be made (w/ reference t Bert running the ball).
- Very comfortable using Caz, he knows what to do and is very consistent.
- Christian relies on his veterans… Goodman, Owens Piurowski. With time and protection, he can find them and they will get open.
- Stroud said Richard looked lost 2 years ago, how did you reach him? Richard did it himself, he decided to change and took it upon himself to lead and lead by example.
- BYU is very multiple, they make you beat them, don’t beat themselves. They are big hitters. Earn everything you get. Must bring that consistent intensity.
- On the last 3 plays of the Miami game, why was Fortson targeted. Fade was 1-1, we had a 6’2" guy on a 5’11" guy. he’d dominated that in practice. 2nd route, he was the 3rd option. had caz dragging and had rich in back of endzone. 3rd option on final as well, rich in the flat, easterling in the corner (doubled), and it left JMan. We didn’t target him, we threw it to him because he was open.
Quarterback Christian Ponder
- Very disciplined, runs a scheme a lot like jsu.
- Beating the blitz big- have to do it. If they blitz we have to make them pay with big plays.
- Ty Jones does a lot of good things.
- Player's only meeting, hosting, later today, just to make sure everyone's mind is right.
- No energy level in the lockerroom, nobody was excited to play it seemed.
- Rod and Caz and Richard all excellent.
- The offense can't miss assignments like we did. MUST put in the time.
- I know Richard Goodman will get open and catch the ball. The last catch was more him than it was me, great route adjustment, I actually brought the safety into the play more than I should have.
- With where the running game is, we're throwing more than anticipated.
- Seeing the field a lot better. much better. but also knowing where to look. not forcing things. wanted it so bad last year, this year not forcing things.
- Understands concepts. if 1st guy is covered, that means #2 is definitely open.
- I can stand back there all day. big difference from last year. I trust my OLine this year and this year they are giving me time and it is ridiculous.
- Blitz communication is verbal and nonverbal. beating the blitz is done in the film room and the practice field.
Also, if you want to listen to these live for free, you can go to Seminoles.com every Monday at 1:30. Not sure if they are still putting them on I-Tunes.

Mickey...
“Players win football games, coaches don’t win football games.”
Sigh. COACHES teach the players how to win football games. COACHES put the players in a position to win football games.
Really? Interesting.
I bet Urban Meyer sits back and says, “F$%K it! We have Tebow. No need to gameplan or coach this week.” Oh wait a minute. That would be just absurd.
Please Mickey just go. I want to remember you as a championship DC not a guy who was instrumental in the demise of FSU Football.
"Necessity is the mother of taking chances."
- Mark Twain
I am stunned a FSU coach blaming the players!?!?!
Amazingly, Mickey took a lot of credit when it was time for a pay raise.
He is morphing into Jeff Bowden.
Players aren't making $600k + bonuses every year.
I can’t believe he actually said this. I think dementia is starting to set in.
Guess what Mick, YOU recruited these players. Maybe you should have done your research as to whether they could make the plays, have the intensity and execute like you expect.
Sorry guys, but Mickey is right.
Most of you know I am just as eager as the next guy for MA to retire, but there is nothing wrong with this particular statement.
The coaches coach the players, the players play and win or lose the game.
If you look at a fanshot I posted earlier, MA said we were outcoached, which is true and that does fall on all the coaches.
But I think many of us in our demand for change are overreacting to every single quote he says negatively and out of habit. Take a minute to read the recap posted above once again and I think most of what he said is accurate and right on.
None of us know what went on during the 3 days leading up to the game, the 2 practices, or the pregame. The players came out flat, uninspired, and not wanting to be there, per Ponder,
•No energy level in the lockerroom, nobody was excited to play it seemed.
I made this comment on Saturday night and I will say it again today.
IMO this almost debacle is/was on the players.
PERIOD! (just for effect, most of you know me better)
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
I think there's a deeper problem, though
I think Mickey still thinks his scheme is effective, even against the spread. I really can’t see a player missing a TE assignment multiple times in multiple games (as an example). Sure, players don’t execute all the time, but with a different scheme, those mistakes would be minimalized.

The coaches must put the players in a position to win. It is up to Mickey to put a defense on the field that is able to win. The players cannot recruit and train themselves.. if they could, there would be no need for a DC.
Lack of training, teaching, and recruiting.
You’ve read the Peter Principle. Have you read anything by Edwards Demming? A lt of his work points out the same garbage about blaming the people who can’t reasonably change the outcome.
" And He drank the world's sin so He could carry you in, and give you life"
Would you get excited playing for this coaching staff?
1. You know a few positions coaches have left their spots empty and there is no amount of effort that can hide that.
2. You know even if FSU could compete our incompetent special teams coach will turn the ball over once or twice, give the other team the ball on the 40 every kick off, etc, etc.
3. Our staff will play the wrong players.
4. Our scheme doesn’t work.
5. The only time our coaches get excited…..is when their agents are working on a pay increase.
Sorry….blaming the kids is WEAK. Our coaches have let them down for years and then they same coaches throw them under the bus.
My intent was to post my comment and expect negative feedback, bite my tongue and I had no intention of responding.
But what the hell, here is my response to most of your comments.
A) While FSUn did the best he could transcribing the presser, I have listened to these press conferences and very rarely can you hear the question that was asked, which I am sure is the case here. Does anyone really know what the question was?
2) MA answered whatever the question was, with that statement. Again, IMO, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what that statement. He did not signal out any players and he did not throw anyone under any bus. He is 100% correct in that statement and it is up to the players to perform what they have been taught in practice. Isn’t it funny how they performed during the last half of the 4th quarter when they realized they were about to be become a national joke. Or did Mickey and CTC say something to them in the middle of the 4th to all of a sudden motivate them? If that is the case, then MA and CTC should be retained and given a raise, but I don’t think that was the case. The players started perfoming and doing what they were told to do, and what they had been practicing when they realized they were about to lose and become the laughingstock of the NCAA.
D) As far as coaching, putting players in position to win, there being deeper problems, recruiting, training, teaching, playing the wrong players, and every comment made, yeah you’re right, no argument there. But like I said in my original post, none of us here know what is going on in practice, which players are performing best in practice, how the coaches tried to motivate the players or tried to slap some sense into them after the UM debacle. So every speculation made here was just that, speculation. I have to believe, and I think most of you will also if you dig deep beneath the contempt we have for these coaches, that they put who they think will give us the best chance to win on the field. Do we really in all honesty think that they are starting a walk on because he is a senior, or because this walk on is performing better than the other alternatives? Think about it.
5) My point was that we are so accustomed to get on MA ass for every comment he makes, many times we are overreacting. I guarantee if Trickett made these same comments, which he kinda did when he said not interviews until they block, we would be praising him and kissing his ass for showing the guts to speak his mind.
L) Before replying to this comment, please reread my original post, especially my first sentence. Please remember that I too am on the goodbye MA, CTC, and JA bandwagon. But again, just pretend Trickett is the one that said this and many of you would be saying “Tickett is da Man,” and I am willing to bet on it.
8) No matter what the coaching staff did or did not do, there is nothing wrong with that statement, and I stand by
IMO this almost debacle is/was on the players

Responded with class, bravo.

Herbstreit on FSU v BYU
Just heard Herbstreit on Atlanta sports radio.
He says BYU’s offense was designed to take advantage of man coverage defenses.
He expects BYU to pass for 400 yds on FSU.
So do I.
Mickey can tell you what the opponent will do, but he can’t stop them from doing it.
I don't think he is right re: design of their offense
in fact, I think they are much better suited to pick apart a zone.
Herbstreit is so wrong
Why would a team with less than stellar athletes who mostly rely on execution and sound route running ever want a team to come play press man against them. UMMM they wouldnt. A timing offense is screwed up by press man coverage at the line of scrimmage its design is to get the ball out of the qbs hands the man coverage makes that harder to do. FSU athletes vs BYU athletes advantage FSU the best they can hope for is that we sit in zone and dont force their recievers to win battles off the line of scrimmage every play. Think back to VT last year they got up and pressed us most of the game and it was preety succesful we pulled off a few big plays that finally burned them, well we had compariable athletes to them. Thats not the case with BYU our guys are faster and more athletic thus if our dbs come to play we should be in good shape. One of my favorite coaching points is that our dbs are going up against better recievers every day in practice if you will focus read your keys and execute in practice the game should simply be your coronation.
I am not so sure we have better athletes than BYU!
They guys have won, I think, 10 games a season the last four years. They have plenty of talent. I don’t understand how everyone is underestimating BYU!

Athletes vs Players
We have had better athletes than other teams for years, guys who run 40 yards really fast and lift a lot. BYU has had a team of solid players, guys who know their assignments, catch the ball, block and tackle. On offense we have players now, on defense we still have athletes.

We have to be ready.
BYU will be very focused, since we are seen as their last big obstacle in their chance to play for the BCS. Lose to us and it’s over for them.
I bet they are more worried about the Utes...
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.
Elayne Boosler
You're right
This game is exciting to us because FSU is a big name team from a BCS conference – always fun, gets us on ESPN, impresses the media. But TCU and Utah are very, very good. The MWC is not a “cupcake” schedule.
Ponder is funny
“they are giving me time and it is ridiculous.” Would love to see him continue to sit tight in the pocket this weekend and make his reads. The running game needs to become a bigger part of the offense but don’t mind watching Ponder sling it for 300+. FSU has a qb that I don’t mind watching. Amazing.

It really is nice to watch him have time to throw
A QB that can throw for 300 yards a game plus a running game that averages 150 yards or more would be deadly. Just gotta get it going!
by basbalstr101 on Sep 14, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions
heck yeah
300+ yards passing and 150+ rushing…that is the kind of balance I would like to see! HAHA. Even after last week I think this offense is certainly capable of attaining those kinds of numbers.

My concern:
he’s not going to get that kind of time against BYU, or any other decent defense for that matter. UM was missing it’s two starting DE’s and JSU is… well, JSU.
I'm not sure
I’m not dogging too hard on BYU here but I think even with the injuries Miami is/was just as talented or more than the guys they have on the BYU line…same with their line backers. The key for Ponder this game will be if the FSU oline can execute and pick up the blitz coming from a 3-4. Ask Bradford’s shoulder if the OU line did it…ouch.

O-line was a pretty big question mark for OU coming into this season.
BYU knew that and took advantage of it.
No doubt.

Honest question.
What has led to our lack of clock control this year? Our effective passing game not chewing up the clock like a steady running game would, or our defense getting shredded? I would expect the answer is a combination of the two, but I was wondering if anyone had a take on this.
So nothing on BB or anything of substance in regard to our future? Crap…..

Players only meeting
While I really appreciate Ponder taking on a leadership role, its worrisome that we need a players’ only meeting after the 2nd game of the season.
I’m hoping that going on the road will be a blessing in disguise. The team might need to develop an “us vs. the world” mentality. It may force them to focus and come together.
by FtLauderdaleNole on Sep 14, 2009 4:34 PM EDT reply actions
Again I disagree. I think this is a good thing, Ponder is taking the leaders role and I wish a defensive player would do the same. 2nd, 5th, or 13th game nothing bad ever comes out of a players only meeting. Sorry.

Franks right
A Def player needs to step up and get this unit under control. there are some people over there that can do this. and maybe a broken jaw is something we need. We need someone to step up, grab some B@11s and get these guys fired up. Someone on Def needs to get these guys to work harder, study more film, something because If not this Def is going to get walked on by everyone. I think UVA could score on us right now and thats down right sad.
I think Ponder is doing a great job and needs to keep it up. He is being a great model for EJ and hope he helps him so when his day comes he can step in or step up and take us foward like Ponder is right now.

BYU runs too?
Darn, I thought they were a pass heavy team. If they are good at running and passing it will be tough on our defense. Something one of those other sites hinted that Watson may get time at DE. While That might improve that position, it might hurt at LB. While I trust our depth more at LB, his experience there might still be important. Plus if McNeil is finally stepping up, and White is good as they say, why not see if they improve? Does this mean they are BSing on McNeil or realizing White is not turning a corner this year? I think many of you took too much from what MA said. He blamed the players and himself for not knowing how to coach modern offenses. He may be coaching the players to do certain things in practice and may be upset that they are not doing what he has coached. I think since many of these guys are young and were such studs in HS they could free form on plays and just take over a play with their talent. Now they have to trust what they are told and not go off script.
Their record breaking running back, forget his name, I think he is Polynesian
Anyway he is almost as big as our DL, slight exaggeration and an excellent back. They also have a fantastic DE.
Speed is a great asset; but it's greater when it's combined with quickness - and there's a big difference.
- Ty Cobb
i like the parts on the defense because its true
mcneil seems to be turning it on, jacobbi is just amazing and moody is miles ahead of magum great decision to have him back there, i just wanna see him start laying some wood, with that linebacker size its bound to happen.

byu game
Can anbody please tell me that the game is going to be on another channel besides versus. don’t think i can stand another night like sat. Seeing the score keep popping up and not knowing why or how we were losing to jax st was a little to much to take.
Mickey's comments
Make it seem as though he should understand that BYU will run screens and that he won’t be able to blitz as much. He’s talking about winning one on one’s to get pressure, which makes me think he’s going to temper his blitzing scheme so we aren’t killed by numerous screens. Is this how it reads to you guys?
Swagger, Intensity, Execution
Best thing said above
Ponder staying in the pocket- comes with confidence in the OLine and knowledge. He has gone through all 5 progressions at times.
This is something we have needed for some time now. Get the running game back and we could be back in bissness.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
Our OLine better come to play
It looked like a J-State track meet in our dang backfield last Sat. I’m sure that Trickett will be on these guys without mercy. After his quote that his guys don’t get to talk to the media until they begin blocking, I know it’s going to be a grueling week in practice. It makes me think of the Tom Cruise character in Tropic Thunder. (warning! profanity ahead!)

Nice Gonzo, big fan of your work. How about a FSU cap on the green guy?
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
MA, I know we are all mad at MA but I think there is something good about all this
MA is one of FSU best all time coaches. Hes had some trouble over the years sence his son died, but hes still MA. At least hes out there trying. It might not be what we want or even need but its what we have and we have to deal with it at least for this year. There are some things these last 2 games that I say that were good. It looks like we have an all right goal line Def. We have some talent in youth, MA is trying new things, they might not be working right now but they could and might. this 1-5-5 or 2-5-4 look almost like a 3-4 could work agenst the pass well in the right way.
I think the biggest weakness right now and the one spot on the Def we have to get a quick fix is at DE. I think we could put some other guys out there maybe some of these Fr DT. Demonte McAllister I thought thats what he played in HS. I know we want him at DT with his size but untell her gets the size why not us him instead of Yarborough who is a joke.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
Exactly, fans criticize MA saying he is too set in his ways, but he is trying new things and admitting he is not used to these new offenses. Plus with all the youth at key spots mixed with experienced, but not very talented guys at some spots, most defensive coordinators would have some trouble at this stage of the year with the current defense.
