Respectable spread.

But I’m thinking FSU needs to come out and make another statement. One of those 52-3 kinda games, like the old days. Make’em pay us some respect in the polls.

They looked a lot better last night. If they could cover the short passes over the middle, they’d be doing great.

I appreciate your enthusiasm,

but I’m afraid anyone who expects us to beat USF 52-3 will be sadly mistaken.

by MattDNole on Sep 20, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say 52-3

I would say about 52-21

Sucker's bet

I think we don’t tackle, and we’re one injury away from an average offense.

by ricobert1 on Sep 20, 2009 7:02 PM EDT reply actions

UM is one injury away from disaster...

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Curious

What one injury would that be? I suppose you could guess Ponder but I still don’t think that would downgrade us to average on offense.

by truenole87 on Sep 20, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Ponder. He's an elite QB.

Physically, EJ is there, but Ponder’s understanding of our offense and consistently getting us into the right plays is something Fisher said he has never seen.

There must be something to having a kid who can graduate in 2.5 years

He’s got decent tools, and is apparently brilliant on and off the field. The NFL will come calling for this kid.

by ricobert1 on Sep 23, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

totally disagree, FSU isn’t world beaters, but they are far from average, and there isn’t one guy (w/the exception of Ponder) that FSU couldn’t do with out.

I guess they got him a medical redshirt because he played last year in a couple games.

Daniels is the real deal. He may not be ready to step in and beat FSU but he can do everything Grothe can do and do it better. He’s bigger, faster, a much, much stronger arm. He is a freshman seeing his first real game action, but he’s talented.

by Tyler on Sep 21, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree somewhat, I don't know that he is faster

Grothe is pretty fast, and BJ is a good runner but top end speed isn’t his thing. He does have a MUCH bigger arm than Grothe, and he is thicker but not too much taller. Unless he has grown since he got to USF which is a possibilitiy

by SWFLNole. on Sep 21, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just under 6' tall, about 5'11" 3/4 and I'm at least an inch maybe 2 inches taller than Grothe.

He’s listed at 6’, but closer to 5’10". I’ve never stood next to Daniels, but he’s listed at 6’1", if that’s close to accurate, he’s at least 2-3 inches taller than Grothe. Top end speed isn’t Grothe’s thing either. He’s very elusive and instinctive, but not really all that fast.

Tools Whore

by Tyler on Sep 21, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, I only knew Grothe's listed height

Daniels is in the 5’11’’- 6’0’’ range so he is taller. Yeah Grothe isn’t a top end speed guy either but he’s got some, their speed is similar to me.

Daniels definitely has better physical tools.

So how is USF baCK UP qb.

Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry

by Desman on Sep 20, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

It is not a drop in talent at all, but he is raw and inexperienced.

He’s very athletic (great runner), and has a big arm but not very accurate.

by SWFLNole. on Sep 20, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

If they run him their chances increase significantly.

Man I dont know if you would want to run your 2nd string QB in his first game a ton. I could see that ending with an unfortunate meeting between he and Nigel

by Tyler_155 on Sep 20, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He is quick to pull it and run, they won't have to design runs

I know the kid, and watched almost every game he played in HS, and many of his basketball games

by SWFLNole. on Sep 20, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He is a poor mans Gavin Dickey.

Not near the cannon Dickey had nor as fast. However I have no doubt he will have a solid career at USF.

Speed is a great asset; but it's greater when it's combined with quickness - and there's a big difference.

The real question, scheme-wise, against USF

will be if we spy him (with, say, Nigel Bradham), does he have the ability to throw into a cover-1? I’ll assume he’ll have happy feet and be more than happy to roll out. But that really limits your receiver options (barring a designed play) to underneath and deep guy. I think we can spy him all day long. We just can’t play 7-on-7 against a good QB.

by ricobert1 on Sep 21, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He will have happy feet.

He did it a ton in high school. He is a great athlete (very good at basketball as well) and often tries to rely on that athletic ability to get himself out of situations. I think a spy is a great idea for all of the reasons that you just said. He isn’t all that accurate (or wasn’t in high school) and often you can get away with it against that style of QB.

by SWFLNole. on Sep 21, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a bad habit of always wanting to Rec posts that agree with mine. But really, I agree.

by ricobert1 on Sep 21, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Like a Tampa 2 -> Cover 3?

You’d run a cover 3, rush 4, and leave 4 to defend 3 WRs and a RB? Maybe since we can’t get any freaking pressure from our DE we can put them both into spy / contain.

by ricobert1 on Sep 21, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

but you know they’re going to design plays to get him mobile and get us out of a cover 3 look. I wonder if we do a sort of Tampa 2 spy, where LB makes an initial read on the QB (is he running?) and if not drops back into coverage. You have to have a very bright and athletic kid to play that right. More of a read-and-react type, and MA doesn’t like asking his players to do that.

Backup QB for USF

Keep in mind, BJ Daniels is from one of your local area highschools. So, he will be highly motivated to perform well. I’ve been a USF season ticket holder from the very beginning. From the few plays we’ve been able to see him, the talent level looks better than any QB we’ve ever had. This weekends game could be a fantastic battle. I think it will come down to a field goal and that may be are downfall.

by Jiggy on Sep 20, 2009 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

They did

But only as a WR. He let everyone know that he only wanted to play QB in college, so neither side showed a ton of interest in the other.

by nolesblogger on Sep 21, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Jimbo only recruited one QB that year and it was EJ Manuel.

Had we not gotten him, they would have probably been on Daniels, but that point was mute. EJ committed early and Jimbo had him as the #1 prospect on his board.

best qb you've ever had...

but that’s out of what? six total? I’m just sayin…

by garnetandgold on Sep 21, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Experience

There is no substitute for QB experience and maturity. Sure, this kid can probably run fast, jump high, and throw hard but he will be learning on the fly. We’ve seen it here, you will see the flashes and they will do some great things but the best you can hope for is that they won’t lose the game for you. So it will be a big difference from having a 19th year Sr. leading your team in the 4th quarter.

a scrambling qb scares me...

but like someone said earlier….he takes a square hit from nigel bradham and that will be his last scramble for the game.

should clarify*

even tho a scrambling qb scares me, he runs a 4.5/4.6….our linebackers are faster than that LOL, and hmmmm maybe a non-existent pass rush might be a benifit this week….no pass rush means no incentive to take off =]

we have a pass rush...

they just NEVER actually make it to the qb

by garnetandgold on Sep 20, 2009 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

yikes

seems like a lot of points to give up for a team that plays zero defense. We can’t expect to score 50 a game, can we?

Maybe we learned from the big 12 teams. Nice offenses with no defense lol

by Cee on Sep 20, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

I'm pretty sure

FSU will dominate USF. USF’s offense is going to be hurting without Grothe, he is the guy that makes that team go. Now I know USF will be fired up for this game, but I believe FSU will start slow and then start to pull away in the 2nd quarter.

My final: FSU 45, USF 17
