Nice halftime report!

Very, very precise DK. :)

First half analysis

I know I’m seen as the Debbie Downer of the site, but I was worried all week about this game and that fear has been justified.

We are still not a very good football team.

What people don’t understand about the BYU game is that EVERYTHING went right. Well guess what, MOST TEAMS WIN WHEN EVERYTHING GOES RIGHT!

But those type of wins shouldn’t gloss over glaring weaknesses in the team.

We are still very young and while players like D. Allen can look like a stud one day, they don’t have the discipline to be that way all the time.

This is a 7-5/8-4 football team.

by Fsued on Sep 26, 2009 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

My expectations are always in the middle.

Middle of the 1st quarter to see if I need to watch or not.

We either outscore teams by 30 points, or if the offense hiccups at all, we watch our defense get burned over, and over, and over, and over, and over.

Will they disclose the severity of Ponders injury after the game?

APB on Zebrie, did not see him.

I'm all about seeing the Noles win football games...

But I don’t want to see them playing Ponder if he is hurt.

Mobility is playing a key there.

Ponder can usually get out of situations before they even develop.

Our offensive line is much, much improved, but I believe Ponder makes them look good sometimes with his feet and his smarts.

Definitely. Ponder knows he is gifted when he runs.

He uses it as a weapon to keep drives going, but subconsciously he knows it’ll bail him out of many situations. I think he is very weary of being reduced to David Carr ala Texans 2006-7ish team.

We have not run the ball enough, unless we establish the run bad things will continue.

too soon.

We have been moving the ball descently.

I say bring EJ out in the 3rd and give them something they didn't expect.

USF is averaging ...

…. more than 10 yards per play.

We’ve run 41 plays to there 26 and have a respectable 192 total yards.

by Fsued on Sep 26, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

A lot of those have been wasted on screen passes.

Trickett should light a fire under their asses....

And Jimbo should raise hell also. The offense hasnt been THAT bad… those fumbles really hurt. Ponder has looked a bit off at times as well, but mainly due to pressure. If the OL steps it up, we should be OK…. on offense anyway.

Defense wise…. we funked.

by HanzoSteel on Sep 26, 2009 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

X's and O's-wise

The only thing I don’t understand is why we didn’t take shots down field more. They were crowding the LOS — often both safeties were within 10-15 yards of the line and really weren’t retreating deep. I’m afraid it’s too late now, though. They’ll just keep it all in front of them and keep knocking the snot out of us after the catch. Clearly, they have intimidated our offense with their toughness.

by Fsued on Sep 26, 2009 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

their defense looks a lot more solid than our offense

that DLine is impressive, especially the ends (6’7" are you kidding?)

and the hits they are putting are wicked

Ponders playing timid with only one wheel.

Thoughts

A) Their ends are getting enough pressure to take away our vertical game, so we’re stuck going underneath, which they’re covering well.

2) Our defense blows. We’re going to need them to make a couple of big plays or get some stops to give our special teams a chance to make plays.

D) It’s going to be hard to come back against the style of defense that USF is playing. We’re not going to get it back quickly. We have to be methodical on offense and play our game.

vi) We may have to go to EJ to give the option of a mobile guy under center. They’re collapsing the pocket and Ponder looks really uncomfortable. I don’t want to sabotage the season for this game.

We just need to run the ball and limit their big plays.

I agree.

Take away the deep ball and we stay in the game. I just don’t think we can do that.

by Darkhorse99 on Sep 26, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Problem is we KNOW we give up the deep throws, but we still can't stop it.

I think we still give up a few more 30+ pass plays and make BJ Daniels look like BMOC at USF this week. Granted he’s gifted, but our trend is to allow decent qb’s to look amazing.

by NOLEinTX on Sep 26, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

this will be difficult

every time he puts the ball up deep, I know there will be a receiver wide open in the secondary with nobody between him and the end zone

by Osceola on Sep 26, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

ATTENTION

The best way to lose this game is to bring in Manuel.

There is NO WAY he will lead us back to victory.

by Fsued on Sep 26, 2009 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

But at what cost?

Ponder is really hurt. IF we establish the run and throw the simple stuff we’re going to have to throw anyway, EJ could run that stuff.

hurt...not injured.

He hasn’t been playing bad. OLine just needs to block.

Pierre-Paul and Selvie are flying upfield

Ponder is throwing the ball from 10-15 yards back from the line of scrimmage every time. His happy feet have returned for good reason. We have to simplify it.

for the rest of the season. He’s fine.

Ponder and Jimbo.

He’s sore. He may not be 100% but sitting for a half isn’t going to fix his soreness.

We are only down 14 and this game is not out of reach.

Sorry

But from what i have seen from the first half we are going to lose this game big.. They are hitting us in the mouth and are falling like a little school child..

Oline no focus.
Secondary sucks
Ponder is off and limping all over the place.
AND WE ARE BEING OUT COACHED!!

It is a shame…I just dont know what to say.. Make a 1st start QB look like a hiesmen candidate..

I'm always fascinated .....

by how seemingly innocuous plays early in the game impact the final outcome. I think the Owens drop on third down on our first drive was a huge play.

Mentally, if we march down there and score it tell us: Hey, it’s just a continuation of the BYU game. But that drop really set us up for the long afternoon it has become.

by Fsued on Sep 26, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

Good point, and I think you’re exactly right.

by wnc_nole on Sep 26, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't feel desperate yet.

This is a much tougher game than I’d like to see, but we are not out of it…

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Second half prediction...

We will break through and score, but D will not get enough stops — we lose 28-21

by Fsued on Sep 26, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

If we lose, we’ll probably never be ranked the rest of the season, even if we win out, lol

by wnc_nole on Sep 26, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

Don't want to sound like nextlevel version 2.0 but 14 points is nothing if we cut out the mistakes

i.e.

A) fumbles and holding penalties.

2) Need to start throwing 10-20 yard play action quick slants and screens and mix in the draw plays.

D) But the most important thing is to hold them to 3 and out the first series to start the 2nd half.

I am going to change from my FSU t-shirt to my TN t-shirt and I guarantee you will see a different 2nd half of play from FSU.

Then at the end of the game I will come back and tell you how right I was.

PERIOD!

This is pathetic.

I expect the D to suck. Where’s the offense? The o-line is a joke.

We have given the momentum and confidence need to whoop us.

As they have hung and hit us the mouth we have lost our chance to win
