Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Offensive Lineman Ed Christian decommits from Florida State

Rivals 4* offensive lineman from Valdosta (Lowndes) High School has been committed to Seminoles since February of this year. He is an excellent player who can play guard or tackle. Many believed that he may have been one fo the three or so most solid commits that the entire class had up to this point, but apparently not. Ed has decided to open his recruitment back up after his recent visit to Auburn. He will be going back for an official visit to Auburn before making his ultimate decision. This comes on the heels of an obviously very disappointing loss to USF, and not very far removed from Tennessee stealing away Corey Miller and Brandon Willis. Needless to say, a class that has looked very promising all throughout this cycle is starting to become worrisome. The lack of any defensive leadership on the field, and in recruiting, creates no stability which is one of the most important thing to high school kids and more importantly mothers. The losses on the field are showing that FSU may be much further away to being "back" than these kids may have been told. Lastly, FSU is a very easy target for negative recruiters because of NCAA violations, and a head coach who doesn't go out and hit the pavement recruiting like he once did.

I don't understand this at all

We didn’t have these problems with the 08 or 09 classes, and we are better off than we were then: Offense has improved, defensive coaching is due next year, Bowden almost gone.

by tdchrisdavis on Sep 27, 2009 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

We are a very easy target

- Dont know who the defensive coaches will be at all
- Losing to in state schools
- No head coach out there defending us
- NCAA violations/probation

by SWFLNole. on Sep 27, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

The sanctions came in the off season, right

and don’t discount losing to UM and USF. Also the SEC signs its mega deal in the offseason and can sell that to our kids. At least last year kids knew who the staff would be this year. It’s like we had most of this stuff but the same stuff just got worse.

by SWFLNole. on Sep 27, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

There is no such thing as certainty as to coaches these days.

Besides, what would the uncertainty regarding the defensive coaches have to do with Christian?

by FSUjab on Sep 27, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I was talking more generally about the program's recruiting there, we lost Corey too.

Even if there is no such thing, you can still sell certainty, which we cant

by SWFLNole. on Sep 27, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Simple reason

Back then we still had kids who remembered us winning. We have been getting worse and worse for over half of these kids’ lives. If you are 18 you saw us win the ACC once since you were in middle school.

by osceolafan850 on Sep 27, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

yep

im a college freshman and though I can remember winning it all in 99, I doubt most of these kids do.

by tdchrisdavis on Sep 27, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Best of luck Ed

I don’t think we will get him back. Good luck in Auburn, you are a great talent and a very solid person to boot.

When would be the best time (to benefit recruiting) to announce any coaching changes?

by Jaguar on Sep 27, 2009 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Years ago

…if you wanna be a smart ass about it. But yeah, the sooner the better. And equally important is having a replacement lined up and ready to go the moment after we beat the gators. I can dream right?

by HanzoSteel on Sep 27, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Publicly- ideally right after the bowl game in December (I think we make a bowl, yes)

No later than early Jan

hmm

didnt that one fat guy who quit on our team end up at Auburn? Can’t imagine he had anything good to say about FSU.

by Fredric on Sep 27, 2009 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

It's unfortunate but exactly what we deserve

We can’t expect these guys to just sign on to join a team that cares more for not offending Bowden than putting the best team on the field.

The coaching staff failed to get the team up for an obvious trap game. Is that the kind of program you’d want to put your professional future in the hands of?

It is disappointing that this stuff starts happening when we’ve actually gotten considerably better. The 2006 and 2007 teams had almost no bright spots, and the current team is paying for it despite being better. That might be the only part that is unfair.

by 38Noles on Sep 27, 2009 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

I heard Jimbo say

That this was not a trap game. These guys were a solid team and he said he let them know that all week (this was on the radio during pregame). He said USF would be tough to handle if they gave them confidence, and the only way they would do that would be if we beat ourselves.

4 turnovers and TD killing penalties = Jimbo called it point blank

by freshcollegeboy on Sep 28, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I feel like this 2010 class will resemble 2006/2007's

DJ Johnson, D. Jacobs and T. Barnes are said to be soft verbals, per Rivals. I am no longer confident that we land Luc, Joyner, Green or any other stud until we see results on the field and changes in the staff.

by CSI Nole on Sep 27, 2009 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

I think the overweight guy left Auburn also.

Part of the interview process for the incoming president should be are you willing to run the three stooges off and turn this program over to Fisher.

If not it may come to a point where nobody is in the stands. BB was out laughing and joking with the USF people after the game like he had just lost a hand of gin rummy. If they can hire a new president that understands the connection to University prestige and the football program as well as the financial aspects BB will be gone after this season.

Another thing is

those “gentlemen” in Gainesville are loving this. They’ve hated Bobby for years and they are laughing as they watch him destroy everything about us they hate.

by Okinole on Sep 27, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

What will be the tipping point?

I honestly don’t see what could change things at this point. The hold Bobby has on the program is ridiculous. What other coach of an elite program would still be here with the combination of negatives our program has had in the last few years, especially when there is a designated successor waiting to take over.

No other coach would have kept his job in the face of:

Our academic scandal (even if it was the entire athletic department. The head football coach is the face of athletics at schools like FSU)

Decreasing attendance.

Inexcusable home losses.

Losing recruits at this pace.

Losing 5 (soon to be 6) to their arch in-state rival.

Have not played in the last 3 conference championships games.

Had the legal issues with players that we have had recently (probably not worse than a lot of programs and wouldn’t be a factor until you look at all the other issues)

I’m sure I’m missing a lot, feel free to add to the list.

It is in the works

It is long, and I still have research to do, and need to formulate my true opinions. Once that is done I will get the word from FSUn on when he would like it to run. Whatever the best day is in the next couple weeks I would imagine, football analysis still goes first.

What can we do

as a community of FSU fans to help shape the discussion in the media and elsewhere? There has to be a way for grassroots action if the Boosters care more about the coach than the school.

by Fredric on Sep 27, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

So what!

Let Christian decommit. Maybe it is for the best. I will never believe the hype of players from High School. Why? What kind of competition did they play against?

Sure these players we recruit are the future of the program but frankly folks if a guy commits to us and then decommits over a loss then is he even worth having on our team anyway? No. Sounds like a quiter to me. Oh things don’t go right in fantasy land so I’m going to jump ship.

Now with that being said maybe he saw something we don’t see like behind the scenes of how our coaches coach in the games or react to certain situations and that caused him to switch. That is different all together and is a sign of intelligence.

Re:

I don’t express your fervor; a few points:

- Ed Christian plays in one of the most telent laiden places in the country, his HS competition is higher than anywhere but S. FL, East Texas, and S. Cali. And may be even with the latter two.

- I don’t think it shows signs of a quitter AT ALL, this is recruiting, it is how it works. We are not that attractive right now, and Ed seems to be figuring that out. Hopefully we can convince him to stay, it is important. It is not “fantasy land”, it is his future. HIS FUTURE, yes he is worth having, he is trying to make the most important decision of his life. Its not like me when I was in college trying to decide, it is much bigger because there are bigger circumstances surrounding it.

- You don’t believe in the hype of HS players? Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program. ALL of them from Pete Carroll, to Urban Meyer, to Bobby in the glory days. You are sadly mistaken if you don’t think recruiting is really important.
