if anyone wasn't sure

that we have the toughest schedule in the country, this ought to settle it.

Looks like it will be a tough game

BYU had a pretty good power run game going, which may really be a bad thing for us. I don’t know how tough their defense really is though because I am not sure how much help OU’s offensive line gave them. BYU better not drop their game against Tulane.

BYU's defense looked pretty good in this game

but you have a good point about OK’s new offensive line.

by FSUjab on Sep 6, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

for those who didnt watch i took some notes on BYU

should start off with an Asterisk that Sam Bradford Oklahomas star qb did miss the second half, albiet BYU fought punch for punch when he did play, you cant down play a heisman qb not being in the huddle come 4th qt.
so here goes.

Offense first-
They look balanced, strong mixture of run and pass.
QB- Max Hall very good stats, but against a big 12 defense take it how you want, he looked just above average, capable qb, but not elite. Very accurate but arm strength not all that impressive, and mobility is average, could run if play breaks down, but against a speedy defense, dont expect him to get far.

Running backs-they are big, this was brought up in BYU’s offensive break down, they definitely look like they could churn out some yards (scary), but thing is they are not superstars, and being so big, they are not homerun threats predictions for them would be like in the 60-70 yard range.

offensive line- big and powerful, pretty scary being they are playing with mostly second teamers, but tackle Reynolds predicted to miss time with a broken hand is in, he looked powerful at times, then at times hand looked like it affected him.
albiet a big offensive line, they dont look atheltic and appears they will suffer with speed (obvious plus for us)

wr/te- their te (pitta) is all hes cracked up to be, very reliable, and pretty good athleticism, they lined him up wide a couple times in the slot. now the wr’s on the other hand look nothing more than dependable, more “possession” types than burners from what it looked like, biggest thing i can compare the receivers too is if they we’re at fsu…they wouldn’t start.

next post defense.

I saw a little of this game and the TE and QB looked good.

The QB seemed to have a good head on him. At the same time this team only scored 14 with there crash and burn Offense. there Str. was there Def.

DEAD ON! I was thinking the same thing. If Mickey figures how to stop the TE its goodnight for them early.

They remind me of a slower, less athletic, less stronger along the lines BC. They have a great short passing game with a very capable QB. I think someone said that OU was way overrated and BYU was a little underated. This I agree with. They had success because of the unstableness of OU’s OL.

The one thing that made the difference in the game against OU won’t be there against us and they’ve lost the element of surprise. FSU will be ready for that zone blitz I can tell you that.

Lost in all that upset is that they still had trouble scoring against that OU defense because of its speed. 14 points will not beat the Noles.,

Harvey Unga
Running backs-they are big, this was brought up in BYU’s offensive break down, they definitely look like they could churn out some yards (scary), but thing is they are not superstars

BYU was without their best offensive player in Harvey Unga. He is projected to be Max Hall’s primary offensive weapon in 2009 and will be 100% healthy for the FSU game. Unga needs only about 800 rushing yards to become BYU’s career rushing leader. Unga also trails only TE Dennis Pitta (1,083) in career receiving yards on the current roster.

Kariya’s performance against OU was remarkable considering it was the first major playing time he’s received in college to date…

BYU's defense

um from what it seemed like…not all that athletic truthfully.
they have a little size here and there, but looked undersized at times also.
major thing i noticed they didn’t seem overwhelmingly athletic, definitely looked like our speed and vetern o-line could gash big plays off them, and another thing not a good group of tacklers, looks like they rely on “group tackling”, so if one of them gets caught in the open with bert or taiwan look for a big play to happen.

linebackers seem plain to me, they looked dependable “get the job done” types but not overely athelitc and or impressive, if they get caught having to gaurd a slot reciever of ours, they will get torched.

d-line-looked servicable, not “monstars” (space jam reference lol) in size but they do flash atheticism with their smaller size, but looks like they would get slashed by a good o-line (which hey, we have)

secondary- once again “servicable” can make plays that should be made but looks like they would get beat by athletes that are better, example is they are a group that will make the play that is wide open (lame duck int, under cutting sloppy routes) but will get beat by speed and superior talent, thing that comes to mind about them is the “bend but dont break” type, but like i said looks like speed would eat them up.

thats really all i got from just amerturish first hand opinion, if i could compare them to a team i would compare then to a little bit and i mean little bit more athletic Winsconsin, except qb is better, rb’s have a lil more “wiggle”, but wr’s average, and defense will get gashed by speed.

im not predicting a win just yet, lets see how they play against their next opponent (Tulane?) but this could be a shoot-out 42-35 type game.
i give odds for us 75%, if our defense can just come up with a couple turnovers we should be in for a W.

by jfree on Sep 6, 2009 12:14 AM EDT reply actions

I know they beat OK but Im not going to buy into it.

1) Was OK as good as a #3 team in the nation.
They played bad Def and still held them to 14
2) can they run the ball.
No Im sorry they only had 28yrd in 33att at 0.8 yrd per play
3) they can pass this is true with 329 yards but thats a norm agenst these big 12 teams.

by Desman on Sep 6, 2009 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Though FSU isn't #3 either

Maybe OU didn’t bring their A-Game … but lot more questionmarks for us than them. Should be a big challenge for FSU.

by txnole on Sep 6, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions

1 thing to consider is that OU was breaking in 4 new starters on the OL. 1 of those 4 did have 4 starts to his credit, but the other 3 didn’t have any.

by RishiM on Sep 6, 2009 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Again, dead on! They have a good defense but its slow! They aren[‘t that big either. BC’s defense was slow but they were monsters and constantly put us in 3rd and long due to them stuffing the run game with Brace and Raji.

This is what i’m telling people, if you don’t have a great DL you are going to have A LOT of trouble beating the Noles this year.

NC did not look good at all. They will run and play good defense for all thier wins much like VT is forced to do. Taylor sucks.

Scheme

Their blitz packages were very effective. I know OU’s oline is young but they were completely confused on zone blitzes. Oline guys were caught guarding no one while line backers were getting free unhindered shots at the QB. I am very glad FSU will have time to go over this film. You guys may not be buying it but I am officially more worried about this game. True their offense wasn’t astounding, but the OU defense isn’t exactly the worst of the big 12. In fact 2008 they were number 3 in overall defense in the Big 12 (granted that was 68th in the nation but still…). And Max Hall got it done on a long drive when his team needed him. Just saying, FSU will have to play a very sound game (oline for the love of juju beads, pick up the dang blitzes!!!) to pull out a win in Provo.

there is one good thing

to win the ACC and make the OB all we need is to win the ACC. But I think w/ time we should get the win. But you are right. We are going to have to do our homework here.

Man...

How bad do you think the Oklahoma oline felt when they let Bradford get pummeled? Got to at least put a little lump in their collective throat. The worse thing about it? Tebow with one less person for the Heisman race. Go Texas! HAHA. You are right, we don’t have to have the BYU game to make it to Tampa, or USF for that matter. But it would sure be nice to get W’s for both those games.

by onebarrelrum on Sep 6, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

we dont have to have a win for BYU to make it tampa…but we need it for confidence for these young players and national respect….especially if we can beat BYU and miami loses to Oklahoma…that could show kirk herbstreit and the nation whos “closer being back” to their old selves, im excited to see it unfold.

by jfree on Sep 6, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

OK falls to teams ike this.

Bos St and now BYU. what was the problem. Over conf. Thats my guess. OK people expect a win because they were #3 in the nation. Should a new O-line get #3 right from the back I think they were a little high ust like OSU. and now we know 1 of 2 things. Navy should be ranked or OSU is crap, and BYU can play or OK is not the same team as last year.

Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry

by Desman on Sep 6, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

That triple option is hard to defend if you rely on penetration and speed because sometimes you will over run the play or just not get there in time as OSU found out. The only way to stop the read zone, triple option and veer is to play discipline assignment football in a read and react scheme. Any other way and you’re giving up long runs.

by nextlevel on Sep 7, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you, man

That scheme was downright magnificent. Max Hall played brilliantly and very intelligently. It was way better than average. He made and delivered hot reads quickly. He didn’t have to often, but he threaded the needle. He zipped the ball in quickly.

These players will be way too smart to simply out-athlete.

I’m worried.

by pillsburysoldier on Sep 6, 2009 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions

BYU Oline

Seemed to dominate at times. Gave Hall plenty of time to read the field. I agree that he didn’t look like the best QB and had limited quickness but he played sound and like you said intelligently. He made the throws he had to make and also made some nice runs forcing the OU defense to account for his mobility. FSU will have to do significantly better with the pass rush than OU. Alright…I’m done thinking about it. Too much to handle. Got to make it passed Labor Day.

true he did. I want to know what happenes when he get pressure.

There is something FSU need to do this year. If we want to win we need to score. Offense wins games Def win Champ. Our Def needs to win the ACC but Our Offense needs to win the OOC games. BYU and USF can score but can they out score us. Only a few weeks to find out. I think OK has a good Def but not great and BYU only got 14, As for USF they played a cake team. The best part is if we dont have to fight with miami and we can run on them we should win. We wont have to open up the play book and show to much to BYU and USF.
BYU vs OK we saw what they bring to the table
BYU vs Tulane Might be a blow out might not. Havent sold out to BYU just yet

USF vs Wofford, West K, and Chr So.
Come on this is about like FSU last year when we played WF. they can blow out these teams and still when they come up here I just got two words for them.

OU's run game not so dominant w/o guys like Loadholt mauling people,,,

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Mind if I join you

BYU fan, alum here. Great website, great football fans. Read the ’Nole Your Enemy articles on BYU – a fantastic effort but a bit of an underestimation in my opinion. However, I admit I was shocked with the OU result. Even more so because we were playing without Harvey Unga (star tailback – a rare thing at BYU) and Matt Bauman, only returning LB.

Good luck with Miami. Hope you are undefeated when you come to Provo.
