Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

5* OLB prospect Christian Jones has been working in a credit retrieval program to try to pull up some of his grades. He is doing it to try and meet the Notre Dame admission standards and is leaning that way. [Jones has called this a "college credit program"]

I've edited out the identity of the source to preserve anonymity, but this person is definitely in a position to know. It's a long way till signing day but this is interesting to say the least. Strap in. It's gonna be a wild ride. Kids lean in a different direction each day and if I had to guess, it would be that he is doing this only to keep his Notre Dame option open should he choose the Irish.

Many who follow the situation closely believe Jones' father, Willie Sr. (a 'Nole himself who played under Bowden) is still angry over the Bowden situation. I'd be worried if a parent wanted to send his son to play for someone who didn't know the son's name. It is believed Jones will still unofficially visit FSU before signing day. He is close with several current FSU commitments.

This is far from over. Jones gives good interviews and it could be interpreted that he has has a new favorite each week.

Hopefully not

people need to realize that there is only so much FSU can do. If posters act like idiots they’ll get the suspension.

People need to get real. We can’t get everyone we go for, much less everyone we want. This gonna be a great class and it will be fun to watch how things pan out.

While true

this is a legacy kid. Ugh, this is disappointing. I wish him well wherever he goes, but man I really hope that is FSU.

I have to admit to you guys, I almost take this harder than losing him to UF. I really, really, REALLY hate Notre Dame.

Agree

Notre Dame is a very close 2nd to UF on the hatred scale. Maybe the only two schools in all of America that I absolutely can’t stand losing recruits too.

by Warchant-7 on Jan 20, 2010 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

For me its easy. UT has something that should belong to us. On the other hand, we have something we failed to defeat ND in order to earn. Maybe that’s too cut & dry, however that’s it in black & white AFAIC.

Disliking ND because they’re lame by certain criteria or because they receive way more praise than they deserve is sort of like drinking “haterade” IMHO. For whatever reason, fortune seems to favor them.

BTW, i prematurely opened the whiskey today, so please take that into account when reading/replying etc. Not sure if it shows in my posts, luckily spelling/grammar check are my friends.

"fortune seems to favor them"

Not since a wonderful November day in 1993….when a certain BC kick sailed in between the uprights. They’re living (dying?) on a legacy that is becoming ancient history.

ND was THE team of the 20th Century in NCAA football. Nearly all of it achieved between 1910 and 1990.

Gotcha

Haha, but you can't separate that from ND.

That is ND.

That’s like saying if you take away the Seminoles, the 2 national titles, Heisman winners, other award winners, those 14 straight seasons of top 5 finishes and not losing a bowl, and Bobby Bowden from FSU, it’s the dog crap on your shoe…

They win 2 games in a row and they are a top 10 team

they play that crappy schedule and with 2 losses, they might still make a national championship game.

See, I grew up a fan of Miami

I was on the field for a lot of big games as a kid. I’ll be honest, I still love Ed Reed.

So while I now hate the U, and believe me, I hate them, it will never be the same as my hate for UF, which has been a constant. IF 15 years from now, we are regularly stomping UF, and losing consistently to Miami, that might change, but lets get real, we wont be losing to Miami consistently (see what I did there).

by Miaminole on Jan 24, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Same is true of USC

No chance...

that was a kick-in-the-gut kind of day. Not only Elam (whatever)…but Powell and Floyd joining Easley. Felt like we were further than ever from catching UF on that day. Well…maybe not as bad as ’07!

I’ve reset my expectations. Finish in the Top 10 and have a strong showing this fall against a challenging schedule. I’ve realized….we’re simply not in UF’s league anymore…and it may take a few years before we beat them on NSD or in November.

by PoseidoNole on Jan 20, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

The recruiting mods expected Powell and Floyd, but because

those kids weren’t in play for FSU, they didn’t talk about them (we don’t discuss prospects for whom we are not in play usually). Then it hurt badly.

I didn't think they were going to FSU...

But I had no idea all 4 of these elite defenders would go to UF. Not all 4. Not after Dec 26. That was the hard part…not so much that we didn’t get any of them…but that they all went to stinkin’ UF. It crushed my hope that UF was even slightly headed in the wrong direction. FUDGE! Okay…back to the present.

Wait till Meyer bails.

Even if he doesn’t, his deranged behavior is a sign that he’s unstable. It’s a house of cards waiting for FSU to blow on it. And some hurricane force winds are building in Tallahassee.

Hope you're right (about him bailing)...

but I don’t really see it. i think he just was being a giant baby…and his panic attacks got the best of him. I get the impression lately…that he wonders what the heck HE himself was thinking in December. If his assitants are remotely decent…he’s got a VERY full cupboard to win another NC. Soon.

A lot of other ifs can happen there too.

If Meyer leaves or has health problems and UF runs through a string of coaches like Bama did before Saban
If Bama remains as consistent as UF regardless of whether Saban stays (Bama has the $$$ to stay consistent)
If UT, OU, USC, are strong enough to beat UF if they are playing in the title game.
If Tenn. starts scheduling smarter and gets good again.
If UF gets hit with NCAA sanctions for some unknown reason.
IF Fox gets the ACC contract and starts running stories about the UFelons & bad press affects Turd recruiting
If the NCAA doesn’t try to save UF by changing eligibity to 8 years so that Tebow can have another 4-year term

I am worried about his lack of official visit

we try to have all our kids officially visit after the season because our game atmosphere is pretty poor compared to the SEC schools and Notre Dame. No doubt Christian has seen our game atmosphere and that of other schools. We get kids by throwing stuff at them after the season and showing them what an awesome town Tally can be. It’s better for them to not see our game atmosphere, sadly. That way they can’t compare it to the other schools.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 20, 2010 7:08 PM EST reply actions

ND game atmosphere is nothing to write home about. Talk about being asked to sit down.

Try to wear a FSU jersey and stand the whole game. Of course the game wasn’t very exciting after going up 38-0. (i think)

i will say my only example is a game they were down quickly and by a lot

Obviously selling out is important

But (not that FSU has this) I’d rather have 70k being loud and standing than 80k sitting and cheering every once in a while. More older tickets holders than us I think. I think we have the potential for better game atmosphere than ND is what I’m saying I guess. Not that we do right now.

Do you know what game he came to?

If he was at UM then that was pretty good. Granted I’ve never been to a game in Tally in the 90’s or any SEC game besides a UGA cupcake game. Either way I know the game atmosphere needs to change. Hopefully it won’t cost us Jones.

Nothing matches SEC for sure. I wish I could have gone to a decent UGA game.

Difference was negligible in the stands. Once atmosphere reaches a certain level, it’s indistinguishable. The Doak is capable of rocking, just have to get enough W’s to fill up the seats.

by arrdub on Jan 21, 2010 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

We have the potential to be just as good as anyone else. In virtually every respect I mean. The lip svc. the SEC keeps receiving is getting old. I always thought in the 90’s we would’ve done fine in the SEC. Overall. The SEC is head & shoulders above other conferences. Beyond that, FSU CAN hang w/ the big boys. We used to be arguably the biggest year after year. As far as ND goes, they have certain advantages thanks in large part to Catholicism. I could go way deeper but i don’t have the time or the patience to research, argue w/ morons etc. Bottom line, We are the Noles, we shouldn’t hang our head or tuck our tail. Seriously, scalp or be scalped.

by Scalpemall on Jan 21, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

If you don't mind I'd like to hear what you have to say about ND's advantages due to Catholicism.

Just a brief summary would suffice. I’m curious. Something about the church putting money into the school and/or “promoting” it?

by tricknole on Jan 21, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

No.

Not to get into religion at all, but whats a fairly common tie that binds ND grads?
FAITH. Just one more thing to keep affiliations strong with graduates. My personal experience w/ religion (Catholicism particularly) is that it can be fairly fanatical. Almost like " you know god wants you to support this program after you graduate right?" “Lean to the left , lean to the right, stand up, sit down, fight, fight, fight! 10 hail mary’s and an endowment to the school and you’re good w/ god.” Sorry , if you disagree.

by Scalpemall on Jan 21, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough.

Just wanted to hear your opinion. I never really thought of it that way, more of the way I look at why any top, private university has a lot of money.

Thanks for not blasting me.

I knew i was going out on a limb, my opinions don’t resonate w/ some people. Thanks for respecting my opinion.

by Scalpemall on Jan 21, 2010 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's that controversial of an assertion.

ND has a huge Catholic following that would otherwise have no affiliation with the university. While it doesn’t necessarily translate to direct monetary/program support, it translates into network ratings in a big way (i..e, NBC contract).

There are plenty of private institutions with a storied past that have gone by the wayside as the game and landscape have evolved. ND hasn’t, in most part, due to this demographic phenomenon. I would warrant that if they didn’t have the TV ratings and resulting deep pockets to fund the mediocrity of post 1992-, they may very well have dried up as well.

Akuna?

We're not "sunk" without Lemonier...

but I won’t consider it a great haul without him. This class is just too smallish…the average weight of the top 10 guys is about a buck-seventy. Too many 150-160 pounders. We need more grown-a$$ men.

by PoseidoNole on Jan 20, 2010 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Not counting Luc or Cummings...

all of our “elite” commits are small. Tye might become a great one…but he’s not a highly rated recruit at this point. Maybe he should be…but that’s another argument. Anyway…we’ve got a fine class. I’m just concerned about the physical size of a lot of them. It’s very, very light.

by PoseidoNole on Jan 21, 2010 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

I'd rather have Jones than Lemonier.

Jones could see some immediate PT.
He’s big enough to put at DE and rush, certainly as big as Lemon.
Jones would give us more options because we could use him as OLB or DE.
We have some promising young DEs on the team and next year’s DE class should be monster.
We’re not as deep at LB, and a class of Luc, Jones, Akuna, and Holmes would be MONSTER.

by NoleLaw on Jan 20, 2010 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

I think Jones is better than Lemonier but would you rather have him?

DE seems like a much bigger need to me. We always have good LBs, it’s depth at the position that is hurting us now. One guy won’t make that big of an impact there.

Speak softly, and carry a big Spear

by tdchrisdavis on Jan 20, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I have to agree that Lemonier if of greater need

But the potential of having Luc flanked by Jones and Bradham is way too tempting. And who knows how big Holmes will be after his redshirt year. He’s 6-3 but with DE length. So that would indicate that he has the frame to pack on weight

If we can close pretty strong I’ll be happy. And I realize that my expecations aren’t justified.

PS No concerns about all of the “elite” 150-165 pounders on our board? It seems that I am the ONLY one who is remotely worried about it…which tells me that I’m probably out of line.

We had a "flurry" of high end commitments all in about a week or two in December,

but we’ve had 3 very good commits this month as well. The flurry is over, but the class isn’t at it’s peak yet. We have very good shots at multiple 4*’s and a 5*.

And of 21 commits, 5 are below 175. They are all DBs or WRs. Bert Reed is only like 150-160 but he’s a pretty important cog in the offense (not a great player but a good one). Do you not expect them to put on any weight in a college program? Even if it’s only 10 pounds apiece that’d be an increase by 6-7% of their original body weight.

Last year we only took 3 guys 175 or less. So it’s not like recruiting small is our strategy.

by tricknole on Jan 22, 2010 2:12 AM EST up reply actions

We're already a lock for a top 10 class

Only question is whether we’ll break into the top 5.
No worries about size at all. Jimbo knows what needs to be done.
McCloud is 295
Jacobs 294
Erving 285

Those numbers are according to Rivals, which is usually low (old numbers). Genron says Joyner will report to Tally at 180, Rivials lists him at 166. My guess would be around 172-175. Luc is listed at 230, my guess is 240. Harris is listed at 185, which is plenty big for a corner. Dent is listed at 180, my guess is 185.

If you are worried about kids like Kenny Shaw & DJ Johnson, don’t worry. They are receivers who do not need to push people around. Shaw did just fine at the UA game.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that many of the recruits are 17 yr olds who will gain weight. Most kids that age gain weight anyway. Ever hear of the “freshman 15”? Our guys will have the Viloria 15. UF has 8 recruits that weigh between 156 and 178. Werner(264), Foose(310), C. Jones (220), C. Green (200), and the other guys who are likley to round out our class all have good size. We’ll be fine. Werner can add 20 lbs by the time he sees significant PT. That’ll make him a fast, athletic 285 lb DE. C. Jones already looks bigger than 220, but he could easily be 240-250 before he goes to the league. Like I said, we’ll be fine.

Losing him would suck

Was counting him in the class for quite a while now. Losing him to ND would also be a kick in the guy as I think we have better or equal talent on hand and clearly better talent coming in. But if his thing is the academic difference who can really blame him. Hopefully he signs with us on NSD, as I am sure he is a priority with our coaches, but if he doesn’t hopefully he won’t be a Cane or Gator.

I hate to sound like a broken record...

…But speaking out AGAINST Bobby returning for another dreadful season made little sense. The unbiased former players were looking at a ridiculous Pro/Con situation if they chose to speak the truth.
On the other hand, standing up for a legend and your father-figure doesn’t have much backlash possibilities.
Of course, the media would never illuminate that fact.

Sad but true. (And we saw it coming from miles away).

Choosing uf would just seem spiteful, considering the relationships/rivalry etc.

FSU needs to hire somebody the get the gamedays more alive, electric, inclusive, SOMETHING to make the atmosphere inside DCS rockin. When I was at FSU in the late 80’s almost every home game was a night game and the students had been drinking all day and were PUMPED by gametime. Lake Howell plays in a dud zone for high school football

I grew up in Orlando and I can tell you based on their schedule from last year that if they didn’t have a winning record that is sad. I mean they freaking played Colonial who hasn’t had a winning record since 1993!

He was a man among boys out there for sure, because there isn’t alot of top talent in the Orlando area. Many schools I have simply slipped over the last few years around there. Edgewater used to be a powerhouse but everyone we got out of that school didn’t live up to the billing. Evans is no longer a powerhouse. About the only two teams in the area with talent on a regular basis as of late is Dr. Phillips where Kenny Shaw played and Boone. Also maybe Olympia. Other than that the area is a dead zone for top notch football players. Once you start getting outside the Orlando area and head either north, south, east or west is when the talent starts to show up.

Seminole HS...

Up in Sanford (pretty much a part of Orlando these days) has done pretty well of late haven’t they? Though maybe too recently to accurately judge their talent.

Yes

I went to Lake Mary and we were better than them up until all the Sanford kids stopped coming to Lake Mary. I graduated with Keith Rivers(USC then #9 in the draft) Lake Mary has put a couple of guys on D1 schools. But Seminole HS has been great lately. They won the state championship and were solid again this year. Oseola(Kissimmee) is also a good school.

Apopka always has a good football team

My fiancee went to school there, we both went and saw the playoff game when Apopka played Dr. Phillips. Apopka ran all over them with the triple option all game long, Dr. Phillips fought back with a vengeance to tie it up, game went into triple overtime. Kenny Shaw caught the game winning TD for DP. Come to think of it, Kenny Shaw almost singlehandedly kept DP in that game.

I know you can fight. But it's our wits that make us men.

A lot of this could just be blustering by the Jones Family

as a way to show FSU and others their “displeasure” regarding Bowden, and that their son is not a “sure thing” and that FSU will have to actually sweat it out but in the end CJ will come to the fold.

Don't get your hopes up.

Unlike a lot of people, I am not counting this kid a Nole until signing day comes just because he “grew up an FSU fan” or “FSU is his dream school” or because he has family ties. I’ve seen recruits have all that going for them yet end up elsewhere.

If he were a Nole "lock, " like many think, he would have committed by now and helped recruit for us…not wait until NSD. I don’t see the logic in waiting until NSD if he knew where he was truly going.

by mantanga on Jan 20, 2010 8:52 PM EST reply actions

I've never counted on Jones in this class, and I still would be surprised if he ends up here.

Most people that cite a reason for Jones to come to FSU is his family ties, but little more. With his father upset about ole Bobby, it makes it even less likely he considers FSU at all.

I think USC was his destination, and still may be- Monte Kiffin is attractive to many defensive players, and why not?

If someone asked me to choose which coach to play under- Monte Kiffin or Mark Stoops- that’s a no-brainer. Obviously, there are other factors to consider, but Christian Jones has never been intimidated by playing a long way from home.

It would be nice to have him in the class, but it won’t derail the program.

I did notice that Greg Hudson has been paying him visits at the house lately- not sure how well that is going.

ND is not necessarily better than FSU academically than FSU, but it is better in terms of business and money contacts. With the marginal grades and ACT scores, I suspect Jones isn’t interested in an outstanding academic experience, but if you are a great ND football player, a lot of business opportunities are open to you.

Something ND has that Jones may like..

Is they run a 30 front (at least they did last year). Which would mean Jones would be able to play as a rush linebacker and with his frame, if he were to make it to the NFL, this is where he would most likely project. This could be part of his thought process.

by fsucj2431 on Jan 21, 2010 12:22 AM EST reply actions

No, I definitely agree with you..

But just the exposure of being in that system for 3-4 years would help him out tremendously. I personally feel like he would be a perfect fit for that type of defense but then again ND wasn’t as aggressive with it last year. Even so, with so many NFL teams switching to some form of 30 I think that could be a huge selling point for them.
