Open Letter to FSU Hall of Famer, #88 Willie Jones (‘75-‘78)
Dear Mr. Jones,
Although some have reported that you share our disappointment with how Florida State's administration handled the non-renewal of Coach Bowden's contract for his 57th year of coaching (35th at FSU), I'm sure those writers really don't know all the particulars, or understand the depth of your emotions when you first heard the news. As the FSU Hall of Fame media guide rightly states, "(You) were one of the main building blocks in Bowden's move to mold Florida State into a national powerhouse." I can only imagine what it was like to be on the field, first-hand, in those first years, to participate in one of the most famous rags-to-riches stories in college football. Having won only four games in the three years before Bobby Bowden arrived, you and your teammates made that unlikely transformation that we still talk about today. You got Coach Bowden at his best. You will always be remembered as FSU's first graduating class to beat UF back-to-back, boast of a 10-win season, and shut down Tennessee Street with win-starved ‘Nole fans pouring into the street. If someone meant as much to me personally, as Coach Bowden does to you, and I thought they were being treated unfairly---I would be upset too. But today, I'm sure what matters most to you is your son, Christian Jones. You want the best opportunity for his academic, social, and athletic future. I believe FSU represents an even better opportunity for Christian today, than it did for you, a generation ago.
We will be forever grateful to Coach Bowden for his consistent ability to find young talent and develop them into, not only great football players, but fine, honorable men. There will only be one Bobby Bowden, and you were fortunate-enough to have been mentored by him in his most productive years. While I can understand your disappointment with Bobby's departure, I'm sure you understand (likely being a man with aging parents and family yourself) the dilemma FSU faced with our program's patriarch. It is ALWAYS uncomfortable to take the keys from dad with whom you love and owe so much. Asking for the keys is even more difficult when they insist their skills are the same as when they were 40...even though they are more than TWICE that age. You know in your heart, that if you allow your father to continue to stay on the road, sail through red lights, back into traffic, and drift into oncoming lanes, that soon, everything he worked so hard to build during his life, for him and his family, will be tragically lost. The good news is that, after the uncomfortable choice of taking the keys is made, EVERYONE, including dad, is relieved.
While your son, Christian, won't have the opportunity to be coached directly by the greatest college football legend of all times, in a very real sense, he has ALREADY been greatly influenced by him. The best-gauge of a leader's legacy is in how the principles he taught, reach the next generation. Through YOUR example, Christian has already benefited from what Coach Bowden put in you.
At FSU, your son can aspire to be anything he wants to become. Jimbo Fisher, his top-notch coaching staff, Fellowship for Christian Athletes, and the warm, friendly town of Tallahassee wait to welcome him. We have plenty of successful FSU football alumni that are excellent role models for Christian...to name a few: Myron Rolle, Charlie Ward, Derrick Brooks, Lawrence Timmons and mostly, his father, Willie Jones.
Sincere Thanks,
Russell Bubb, Fan of Willie Jones

Need Help From TN to Relay
I believe this letter reflects not only my heartfelt sentiment, but that of the TN and most FSU fans. If anyone has suggestions on how we can get it to Mr. Willie Jones, please help!
Letter for Mr. Jones
Could it be dropped off at Lake Howell High School? Could we scan it and email it out to all members for signatures? Let’s do something creative before CJ goes out to see USC.
I don't see the point. Sorry.
I’m not buying, just a concerned fan for an FSU alum. How many alums who do not have elligible D-1 sons would you be sending a similar letter to?
If I am Jones Sr., and I get a letter like this from you and some random letter from a trailerpark Turd, saying how awful what we did to Bobby was and how something like that would never happen at UF, does either letter make any difference to me?
It’s a nice letter, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t think that receiving letters from random fans is going to sway the situation other than to make the unreal recruiting blitz even more unreal. I’m sure our coaches have been showin’ the Jones family the love, explaining how FSU has changed since the 70s and where Jimbo intends to take the program in the 2010s.
CJ looks to be a great player, would make significant contributions immediately, and would have a great career at FSU on his way to the league if he chooses us. If we do not land him, then we all wish him the best because that’s what Nole fans do. The letter seems sort of like an act of desperation from fan who is too concerned about where a HS kid chooses to go to college. I hope Christian Jones makes the decision that is right for him. What happended with Bowden will not help Christian get his degree, help him become an independent man with character, get him or keep him from an NFL career, develop him into a player for the next level, meet a wife, see the world, or any of the other things a parent in Willie Sr.’s shoes might want for his son.
It’s not about the fans, it’s about Christian. What will help him achieve his dreams? Where does he feel most comfortable? Where is the best choice for him to go to school? I assume Tallahasse because that’s what I chose. It turned out to be a good choice for others like Myron Rolle. It goes to show that you can achieve any level of success when you come to FSU. The sky is the limit. Jimbo is about helping kids become successful in life. That’s the message that needs to get through, and that’s a message only our staff and maybe some former players like Rolle can deliver.

I agree with the poll, but not the letter.
I agree we need to stay in touch with former players etc….. It brings great pride to the program.
However as for your letter I do not agree with it and frankly if I was Willie and recieved this letter I honestly would tell my son to go elsewhere.
Why? It comes off to be desperate. How often does Willie go out to his mailbox and open fan mail from FSU fans? Probably never, except of course if your son happens to be a big time recruit in Florida.
Let Christian decide where he wants to go and even if his father doesn’t want him going to FSU he is a teenager and you know teenager typically do the opposite of what their parents say anyway.
I think the letter was pointless because at the end of the day do you honestly think Willie gives a damn what a bunch of drooling FSU fans think when concerns his son? Nope.

thanks debbie downer
total sarcasm. I agree the letter shouldn’t be sent. Although it is definitely sincere, it can easily be seen as just being sent because you only care about his son going to FSU to play on the football team.
I have no problem with this open letter being written and posted on a fan site such as TN.
But I agree it should not be sent for many of the same reasons already posted. If Willie J or Christian should happen to read this open letter while it is posted here, that would be great (Welcome to TN Willie/Chris, thanks for reading). But sending or emailing, IMO, is inappropriate.
Now regarding the poll. I think that you meant to imply we should keep in contact, always welcome the former players come back whenever they wanted to stop by, keep the lines of communication open, and have them on the sideline whenever possible, however I was not a fan of the wording you used.
continue to express our gratitude to the FSU football alumni, years after they graduated,
The former players should also feel and express their gratitude to the university for the hundred thousand or more dollars that were spent on tuition, books, living accommodations, food, clothing, and other perks they received while they played the game they loved at FSU. It is a 2 way street.
g8r-h8r, I am not arguing with your sentiments or what I perceive to be intent, just your wording that we owe them gratitude. It is a 2 way street. I just would have worded it differently myself.
Now I will go off on one of my tangents.
Does anyone know if former players are welcomed and allowed to use the facilities after their playing days?
The Rock was on the Jimmy Kimmel show the other night and he was talking about how he works out at the UM football gym 5 days a week with the team. That 5 minute segment was tremendous PR for UM, but it made me want to throw up on the TV, especially when he flashed the U.
While I believe most FSU players that weren’t Tally locals to start with, leave Tally after graduation, I was wondering if anyone knew if FSU has the same type of open door policy that UM seems to encourage?
Bueller.
Bueller.
Bueller.
Anyone?

Where's my letter of heart-felt love and apology?
As an FSU alum and fan who was aliented and marginalized as a Playstation All American and coward by our former head coach, I feel I’m entitled to one.
Anyway, I’ve seen lots of people saying how the Bowdeb retirement should have been handled differently. But no one has suggested a reasonable alternative way of handling it.
If people need comfort in this situation, it’s this: TK knew it was time for Bowden to leave, so he asked Jim Smith to say something. This is internet rumor ofcourse. , but comes from someone who was at a party with both of them. TK was responsible for the Bowden outster and the way it was handled. TK is gone.
Fischer had nothing to do with that situation and acted with nothing but respect for Bowden and complete class throughout TK’s machinations. What the former FSU admin did regarding Bowden has nothing to do with FSU today. Spetman the lap dog is still here, but I suspect his days are numbered as the new prez is free to hire a better AD.
My values: I love my wife, admire my dog, and believe very deeply that Bobby Bowden and Paula Dean were separated at birth.
There is no reasonable alternative when you believe 1 more year is justified
It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee
Agree with most
The letter is OK for sites like this but would be inappropriate to send. I’m pretty sure Fisher, Coley, et al. have Christian Jones’ recruitment under control and are saying all the appropriate things to him and Willie Sr. Last thing they would need is for a well-intentioned Nole fan to send a letter that could be misconstrued in some way and possibly factor into the decision-making process.
By the way, is this you? I was wondering what happened to you…http://www.spike.com/video/bubb-rubb/2694979
