Sucks to be me
Though this is something non-sports I feel like I need to let you all know. Some know me as Des the poor speller and thts cool Im down with it. (not like its not true). There is something else though as some of you know Im in the Army. I at Ft Jackson SC but news came down that Im on orders to Korea. This is both good and bad. Good because it could be back to Iraq or Afghan. Bad because I have to leave the wife and daughter for a year. This is why I havent been on as much of late. Lot of things going on. Dont worry though Im going to be a life member at least tell I piss someone off and get banded for spelling. (JK) I know there are some other guys on that are in the Army. If anyone has any stuff or ideas of things I will need to get or bring before I get there that would be sweet. Im going to area 1. Again thank guys for all the work you all put in.

Thanks for serving. You are a great American.
That’s tough. Couldn’t imagine leaving my wife and kids for a year. I wish you the best.
Dang Des, good luck and God bless.
The good news: Koreans won’t care how bad your spelling is.

Good luck Des
It is men and women like you that make living as an American possible. Thanks for all you do

That sucks man, Im at Riley right now and I felt bad about where I was until I read that. Atleast you will see a lot of games on AFN. I was in Germany for a while, Im not sure if the Koreans use 220 or not but I might look into bringing some 220 stuff if they do. We just got a guy that PCS’d in from Gary Owen, I will ask him if he thinks there is anything you need. Take care and good luck with the move.
Thats too funny I left Riley to come here so I feel the pain of that.
I still have m converter and TV from Iraq this last time Thanks that would be cool
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
You won't need the converter. All elec is 110.
The TV might come in handy, though. Depending on the roomie. But you’ll have plenty of opportunity to buy electronics.
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
Additonal clarification...
You know what? I really, honestly don’t remember if it was 110 or not. I just don’t ever remember having to use a converter like in the mideast. You WILL have to use a plug adapter, though. Most Korean appliances/electronics use a dual prong plug that is much rounder and wider spaced than what we use here.
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
You know what?
I bet it is all 110. I remember pugging my Xbox right into the wall when I was on CQ duty. Yeah… It should be fine. But hell, pack it just in case. You probably won’t need it though.
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
thanks I have an NCO from my gaing unit that I worked with here give me the info
about 110w stuff. I have a converter just incase though and most PC, PS2/3, x-box ect all can run on both.

Thoughts are with you Des
hang in there and thanks for all that you do.

Damn man. Couple of us wondered where you went to.
Weapons are an important factor in war, but not the decisive one; it is man and not materials that counts.

Glad you are on the USofA side man. South Korea? Antiseptic man. Lots and lots of Antiseptic.
Not an alcoholic, just an FSU grad.
Des, Stay safe and log on whenever you can from Korea and keep us posted on what you're doing. Also, try to make sure you are not eating anything with Gaegogi (개고기).
Gaegogi (개고기) literally means “dog meat” in Korean. Gaegogi, however, is often mistaken as the term for Korean soup made from dog meat, bosintang (보신탕; 補身湯)
We wouldn’t want you to come back with rabies.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
You will find that Gaegogi isn't served very commonly in places that the GIs frequent.
Mostly chicken, beef, and similar “regular” meats.
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
Wow thanks Though Im down with trying anything once Now I know just have to remember how to spell that one.
Thank god for my Blackbarry and my Translator

Godspeed Des
Thank you for serving, Americans such as yourself is why we are able to waste precious time and resources debating sports. Come home safe to your family.
Frequent trips to Iraq allowed me to avoid Korea, but I know a few guys who loved it.
None were married though. One captain I know went in major debt to a whorehouse over there. A JAG captain I deployed with went to Korea a few months back, and chose it over many traditionally favorite posts—Carson, Lewis, and somewhere in Europe. He’s a big-time world traveler and picked Korea so that he could see east Asia on 4-day weekends.
Like you said: it’s better to go there than Iraq or Afghanistan. You do get to see AFN Pacific rather than AFN Europe, though the public service announcements (in lieu of actual commercials) are probably equally bad. Lastly, are you going to switch your avatar picture to the Indian head while you’re there?
AFN is horrrrrrrrrrrrrrible….but you do get a lot of games with them, the commercials are unbearable.
There are marines posted at the Moscow Embassy and USConsulate Saint Petersburg
I was not one of them (although I was posted to St. Pete)
NOLEinTX...
I see your avatar is Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys. I love that show, most people I know aren’t familiar with it.
Also – best of luck Desman, I ’preciate it!

Yes TPB is the best unknown show around.
I wish comedy central would pick it up for late night TV, but it’s banned in the states. The language is harsh, but I’ve seen some pretty vulgar stuff on their channel after 9 or so. I just watch it for free on youtube—all 7 seasons. Rumor is that there will be a season 8.
I met "Ricky" (Rob Wells)
@ a grocery store down here in St. Pete, and I called him out in the bacon isle. he was buying Amber Bach and a bunch of meat. it was totally random, and probably one of the best days of my life. anyway, when i asked if they’ll come back with any new TPB seasons or specials he said “maybe, we’ll see.”

No advice, but prayers are with you.
Wife and I are new parents (daughter) and I can’t imagine relocating across the globe from them. Hang in there, Des.
Good Luck Des!
I’m sorry to hear about the separation with the family. That’s definitely the hardest part.
Korean BBQ isn’t half bad (I’m very fond of Bulgogi). Definitely try and get out and travel/see some of the local culture.
But most important – Pay attention to what you’re doing and don’t do anything stupid!
You come home alive, son. And know that we’re all proud of you (spelling or no :)
Heard good things about Korea
I never had to go there, deployments kept me away too, but everyone I talked to that spent time there liked it. As long as you can deal with the cold and don’t get stir crazy you will be fine. Every bar with Americans in it turns into a fight from what I was told though. Too many people seeing the same faces all day everyday. Worse thing that happens during most people’s tour is that a local gets hurt or killed accidentally. Then you have to deal with the protesters outside the camp. They even get a little violent. A lot of the young South Koreans seem to feel that we aren’t needed and wish the military would pull out. Like the North wouldn’t swallow them whole if we did.
Des
you’re one of my favorite posters. And you’ve been here forever. I hope you’re able to keep following us over in Korea. Shoot me your e-mail and I’ll e-mail you some of the better posts if you can’t access us. And man, be safe. Thanks for serving America
Thanks FSUn
All this stuff you guys do is so great and its so cool to know people care about guys like me not because Im a football fan or a (bad speller). Just so everyone knows TN is nothing without FSUn. No joke where were we 2 years ago. How many guys were around back then. You have made this site great. Dont get me wrong I know you are not alone because all of the people on this site make it what it is but when it comes down to it this was your baby. To all the Editors, Authors, Moderators, and TC and FSUn. Thanks for your hard work.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
I didn't serve in the military but here are a couple of things I've learned from some of my buddies who are/have been recently deployed:
1) Interesting fact about the DMZ- the towns on the N. Korea side are apparently fake. They have lights facing toward South Korea, but they are basically cardboard cutouts of houses and whatnot, designed to .
2) Amongst many of the men in Iraq and Afghan (Pashtuns in particular) homosexuality is rampant. Only they don’t consider it to be gay. Much of this conduct involves young boys. So, watch out walking into local forces barracks after dark.
3) Send FSUncensored or someone your address once you get set up, and maybe we can come up with some type of care package to send over. You can never have enough beef jerky, goldbond, etc.
Thanks man
You guys dont have to send me anything like that. But if you want to do something those likes some of the others get around x-miss where you can get a school to make a card for deployed soldiers get people do do that. even people that are not on TN.
Also the reason I serve is becuase of people like you all. Im proud to stand up and do what I do for you all. I love what I do and a lot of people cant say that. Most people hate there jobs.
I should be back in the states around Sept so maybe I can make it to a home game. If so Ill see if we can get a tail gate party or something so one so I can put a face to the name and watch FSU KICK COME @$$.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
I have nothing to say that hasn't already been said.
I don’t really comment much anymore (mainly because there are so many comments, I have nothing new to add most of the time), but you are a great poster/commentor and add a lot to the discussion.
Take care friend, be safe and with the deepest of gratitudes…Thank You.
"I have come that you may have life, and life to the max"

Thanks man

What post will you be stationed at?
I was at wonderful Wonju from 95 – 97. Got out in 97. I still have dreams that I am in ARMY to this day. Best of luck to you and take care.
I was at Camp Red Cloud and Camp Page from summer 04 to 05.
It sucks to be away from the family (especially when its your first duty station… cough) but don’t worry. You will have plenty of opportunity to stay in touch with them. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I might have a few good suggestions for ya.
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
Oh... Show of hands...
Who here actually knows what “Area 1” means? I’ve seen one or two that might… But trust me, bro. Its not that bad.
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
Casey is in Area 1, yes.
If you go to Casey for your personnel in-processing then yes, you most likely are going to be stationed somewhere in Area 1. At least that was the case in my day. But generally speaking, “Area 1” is right around and all camps north of Seoul. I can’t seem to find a map online… And Red Cloud is still open! I heard they closed it down… Hmm…
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
Well the good this is now you can take your family with you to all the camps there
but its a 3 year tour but you get some extra cash. My wife is a year from her RN so shes going to stay.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
You can take your family with you, yes.
And hell, at most places (or so I hear) E-5 and above pretty much has to live off-post due to lack of space in the barracks. At least its that way south of Seoul, when the bulk of my unit re-located from CRC to K16. At Stanley? I dunno. But it probably wouldn’t be worth it. You’ll be so busy doing worthless drilling and “field problems” and such that the year will fly by. Seriously… Bring a VoIP telephone like Vonage or MagicJack and you’ll be able to talk all the time. That and the fact that your command will probably make you buy a cell phone. (Pre-paid plans… International calling is a bitch, hence the suggestion for the VoIP phone.) The year will simply fly by. Seriously.
I bleed Garnet and piss Gold.
I could but my wife has a year left in school and then we are going back to bragg.
Its better for me to go for a year and come home to the east coast. because Im not going back out to the mid west if I dont have to. Also I shouldnt see much field time because Im a medic and should be going to Casey to work in the over night UCC.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
Thanks for service, Godspeed brother!

Since you've got a family......
stay away from the barber poles. Those things will get you in nothing but trouble.
Don't forget Hooker Hill in Itaewon.

Wow, Des. onebarrelrum: "Couple of us wondered where you went to." Definitely count me in that group...
…as I’ve been so tempted lately to enter the Running Discussion Thread and simply ask, “Has anyone seen Des?” Huge thanks for letting us in on the details here. I actually know a thing or two about Area 1 myself (totally lying – I have no clue), and I have a feeling you’ll do just fine. And who knows? Maybe CTC will join you over there. I hear Korean women marvel at his breasts like undernourished children in third-world countries gawk at fat people. Aaaaand that’s probably where I should stop. Keep us updated, and let me know what goes on at those barber poles.
God Bless
Thank You for your service.

The bright part of it is that is another year you won’t end up in the middle east. Maybe they will put an end to this by then.

missed seeing you on here, Des,
but certainly understand your priorities.
