How High Can FSU's Recruiting Class Climb?

With all the talk about Jimbo Fisher's 1st signing class being the best FSU has had in some time, I wondered just how high it will climb.  So I took a look.  According to ESPN's rankings, the top classes usually have around 10 ESPNU150 players.  I am using ESPN's rankings because Rivals.com only considers classes based on the top 20 players in a signing class, which doesn't measure the total quality of the class.  In 2007, UF signed 14 ESPNU150 kids.  USC signed 10.  Texas pulled down 12.  In 2008 Miami signed 12, Clemson signed 10, UF signed 11, and USC pulled 10.  Last year LSU grabbed 10, while Bama, Texas, and USC hauled in 9.  This year UF and Texas will each sign more than 14 ESPNU 150 players.  They will have the top two classes.  At best, FSU could finish 3rd.  Third would be an incredible accomplishment for a team that finished the year 7-6, recruited with less than half a staff for most of the year, doesn't have the money of the other big schools, and well you get the idea.  FSU will definitely finish with one of the top classes in the country.  The question is just how good will that class be?  By my projection, FSU will finish somewhere between 3rd and 8th.  If the 'Noles somehow land all their remaining targets, they would have 13 ESPNU 150 prospects, which would be the 6th most of any class since ESPNU debuted the rankings 5 years ago.  Just to give you an idea of the remaining talent on the board for the 'Noles, I put together this chart, sorted by the ESPN ranking.  As you can see, there is a ton of talent left on the board.  While FSU likely won't grab all of the remaining players on its wish list, they stand an excellent shot to add 3 more ESPNU 150 commitments, which would place this class squarely in the 3rd or 4th slot in this year's rankings.

For info on all these players, check out the Recruiting Board!

What do you think?  Who will FSU land?  Where do you feel this class will end up?  This should be a very exciting signing day.  We hope you'll join us for full coverage.

I would say Jones, Green and Lemonier/Ferguson.

(Of the ESPNU150 prospects.) Not a major change, but either guy would be fine by me.

I want that kid akuna from Hawaii what’s going on with him and his offical this weekend

by caz_noles4life on Jan 29, 2010 1:12 PM EST via mobile reply actions

FSUncensored ya i heard Akuna

Called the our coaches yesterday and they did not call him back and that he was still in Hawaii waiting on them I hope they would just not blow him off like that or whatever

by caz_noles4life on Jan 29, 2010 1:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I really doubt that happened

I think some sites are quite butthurt because we crushed them breaking the Dorsey commitment and because they are being blackballed by the new administration.

Perhaps Akuna called very late last night when Coley was asleep. Perhaps he called a school phone and we were out of the office. But we’re not gonna refuse to give that kid a visit if he wants one.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 29, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

why do you want him?

have you seen him play or what?

i havent seen anything on him.. so i wonder why you are so high on him!!!!!!

This is my completely unknowlegable guess

We get:

Dorsey,
Jones,
Green,
Lemonier,
Smith,
Werner

We miss everyone else.

Pretty impressive haul if we can pull it off. Not getting Jones would hurt the most.

Atlantic City? Wildwood?

I am sensing sarcasm in the suggestion that a kid from Florida’s gulf coast would go to Rutgers because of the Jersey beaches.

Still worried about Christian Jones

Just too many rumors swirling around him to suit me. Have yet to hear positive rumblings about FSU.

by Class of '71 on Jan 29, 2010 1:21 PM EST reply actions

Maybe it's just me

but if I had 2 family members that played at FSU and I was brought up to DESPISE the Gators, there’s no way I would ever go to that school no matter how good they were. Personally, if I was good enough to get offers from the top schools I would never give UF a thought because my mother brought me up to HATE the Gates. Once again, this is just my opinion and one of the reasons I’m not all that worried about Jones.

Unless you are a 5* recruit and you were thinking about hanging with the coeds two hours away instead of chumming with your buds at Lake Howell

so long as hanging with the coeds does not interfere with your basketball schedule.

In other words, I think Jones has just been enjoying the attention and love, while he has the opportunity to take those weekend getaways to hang out with the coeds in Turdtown.

a big problem w/ all these rankings

is how to figure in guys like mccloud and smiley

they didnt play last year and were underranked as high school kids b/c of their qualification problems –
scout has them at 3 (mcc) and 4 stars while rivals gives them both 3 stars – and im pretty sure espn doesnt have them top 150

many here think these two kids easilydeserve 4, or possibly 5 stars – and could easily be the two biggest contributors next year out of this class -

but the rankings will not factor in these guys at all but we all know classes that were ranked high in nsd but turned out to be total garbage b/c many of teh top kids never made it to campus..

by TheNole9Yards on Jan 29, 2010 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

I'm no buff on recruiting, but

I’d be extremely satisfied even if we only land Jones, Lemonier, and Ferguson. I’d sacrifice everyone else for those three. I don’t care so much about ranking as I do making sure we fill our needs (cliche, yes – meh). With that said, hauling in top rankings obviously add to the “prestige” of the program and would probably aid in getting younger kids attention; however, winning will take care of that pretty easily so I would still tip the scale in going for filling the needs than rankings if I had to choose.

by FSUvaFan on Jan 29, 2010 1:32 PM EST reply actions

Nah, i'd rather sacrifice him for the others.

it would equate to running the risk of having to start a younger QB down the road, am I correct on that?

Much rather have that then not be able to apply pressure, or stop the run.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life...no one gets to the Father but through Me"

Nah...

Green is a wide receiver all the way.

by MattDNole on Jan 29, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

Then definitely sacrifice.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life...no one gets to the Father but through Me"

by FSUvaFan on Jan 29, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

I still disagree.

I think you underestimate Green.

by MattDNole on Jan 29, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

I probably do place less value on his potential; however

What good would it be to add extra productivity to what I think will be awesome offenses in future years when you can add productivity to the defese, where the increased productivity there could have more impact on the overall result.

That may not have made sense so I’ll go a little further into my thought process:

assuming we have a highly productive offense for years to come

Obviously increasing productivity, say, 10% is the same whether its from 10% to 20% or 80% to 90%; but, since a team’s overal productivity (and players who are the units of productivity) is divided between the offense and defense (and special teams) I bet there are circumstances where you could have reached your optimal offensive productivity and need to add to the defensive in order to gain an overal better outcome. The most efficient allocation of resources.

You’re probably a lot smarter than me, so I’m not posting this like I’m trying to educate you, but I did want your input on that.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life...no one gets to the Father but through Me"

by FSUvaFan on Jan 29, 2010 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

I see what you're saying.

But Green has program connections. It’s a PR hit (and negative recruiting fodder) when you lose one of those guys.

Will we be screwed if we don’t get Corey Lemonier? Probably. But we’ll work like crazy to replace him next year.

Will our rivals have a field day on the recruiting trail if we can’t lock down a relative of one of the top receivers in our program’s history who just might be the next game changing wide out? Definitely.

by MattDNole on Jan 29, 2010 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think we'd be screwed then, either.

And I definitely don’t think we’re screwed if we miss on Lemonier. Obviously I’d like to land Lemonier and legacies like Jones and Green, though.

by tricknole on Jan 29, 2010 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

by Bud Elliott on Jan 29, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Off the top of my head it would be Lemonier cause we are just so weak on the D front, but then Green is just a freak of nature. Your right tuff spot to be in.

Recruiting related

Recruiting is definitely a dirty game. Here’s another example. Have you all seen this:

http://blog.gamecockcentral.com/2010/01/only-recruiting-rule-that-truly-matters.html

As much as I’d like to hate Meyer for using religion to get a kid to commit, you have to at least respect Meyer’s ruthlessness to win at all costs.

I’m going to laugh at these kids when Meyer isn’t on the sideline next fall.

by DesiNole on Jan 29, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

xactly

that’s why i dont even blame the kid for mayhaps headin back home to play for usf. and how bad is this really going to hurt us depth wise, so many corner’s we’re crankin, i say wish him good luck over at usf where he’ll probably be starting by a sophomore instead.

fsu is still probably his number one choice, but not necessarily whats best for him at this point imo.

by metalheadnole on Jan 29, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

I agree he would have a better shot at starting on an inferior team...

but let him come to FSU if he wants to battle for the position with some of the top atheletes in the state.

by SE Nole on Jan 29, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

I can definitely see that line of thinking...

But wasn’t he like the #5 CB in FL? I know that Joyner/Reid are extremely talented, but I can’t imagine there being that large of a gap between Mitchell and the others. The kid is an incredible athlete, and it’s obvious that nobody is guaranteed a starting job, so I wouldve given him just a strong a chance to start/get meaningful minutes as any of those other guys.
I hope he thinks twice about it…This sucks.

This

FSU always closes great. And no offense to Oregon State, but we put LBs in the league. Derrick Brooks, Ernie Simms, Lawerence Timmons, etc. And how could would it be to be a kid from Hawaii that says FSU came halfway around the world just for me. I think Akuna comes. Its time for us to have a Hawaiian anyways. Jones, Green, and Lemonier are pretty solid in my eyes, and I think Smith will come with his teammate. If we dont get them it will hurt, which is why I think some of you guys are going in with low expectations, but FSU is still FSU. I know we have sucked, but it is still FSU. And with the coaches we have, they are reminding players that.

I like your optimism...

but it’s a new era for FSU with a new staff. More often than not…schools close great when they’re on top and they have coaching stability. I’m still somewhat cautious about how we’ll close this year. I think we’ll have a better sense of things going into NSD ’11….IF we do well this fall.

Bringing in Smiley is not the way to recruit a Mack Brown

There will be other big name tailbacks next year. About one big name back is all you are going to get in one year most of the time. Although FSU is a good situation for backs as Fisher plays them all.

I would like to see them bring in Mack Brown if possible however. Along with Akuna, Smith, Ferguson, Werner, Lemonier et all. Give me some 300 pound tackles. They are hard to find.

" Fisher’s approach to building a winner is lifted from Saban’s playbook. Right down to the terminology such as becoming more "process oriented" as opposed to "results oriented."

" Nick and I are friends," he said. "That guy is one of the best football coaches I’ve ever been around. God knows he’s brilliant. … A lot of the things he believes are a lot of things I believe. We’re very similar!

The process begins!

Akuna

I thought he wasn’t comming for a visit, whats the chances of landing him without a visit?

by seminole4 on Jan 29, 2010 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

is anyone giving us a decent shot with him?

this would be one of the most surprising pickups in a long time.

7th

is my prediction. Which is very, very good. Too bad a certain other scummy school is landing a class for the ages. Arghhhh!

well...

Trick…the ratings are relative to one another. And UF will always be the benchmark…every year. Regardless of how far behind or ahead we get.

I have to disagree with that

Bama and UF are in the same echelon and Bama had 10-11 down years before Saban arrived.

But I don't get why you're so obsessed with them RIGHT NOW.

We are clearly not on their level. We are clearly not even at a “good” level. Why not let us get back to consistently being ranked and winning the ACC a few times before trying to compare every little thing to them?

Programs who want to become ELITE (again)...

set bold goals…focus on NC’s…even if it looks like a distant hope. I asure you that Nike Saban did not arrive at Bama focused on just being an upper tier SEC team…and hopefull division champ. He came in hellbent on being The Best. I believe that’s what our staff wants too. UF is our standard of excellence now…like it or not. Til we start beating them…it won’t feel good. If we just focus on being the next GT…we’re setting our sights too low for this once proud program.

I guess this should go on the recruiting board but

Do we have an idea of other people that are targets that are under the radar. Also I thought we are going to be going to over sign this year, so we could land some of these kids that are left and still pick up more. I understand that the D-line and LB are the under STR areas right now but Im not going to stress that because I have trust in Jimbo. Im sure he will get us some JuCo onto of the ones we are looking at to fill for a year or 2.

I still want to see where the Def will go. I look at what we have and I could see FSU going to a more 3-4. Wow no way but I think we might be going there. (dont know if we have talked about this but) We wouldnt run a true 3-4 it will still look like a 4-3. We are small in the D-Line area right or are we. If we run a 4-3 yes but a 3-4 no. This is what I want to see as my line next year.
first is starter second is backup. Also this backup is fresh legs so I see I getting more people in on Def thank the same 7 in the box.

NT: Amp / McCray / McDaniel
SDE: McAllister / Dawkins / White
WDE: Jenkins / Johnson / Jackson
S OLB: K Smith / Stevens (DE) / Terrell (FR)
W OLB: Carr / Alexander / Smith (FR) /
MLB: Bradham / the other LB
SLB: Luc / Williams / the other LB

WFT are you thinking Des. I know seems crazy but I can see it. This would get us some size we need and still keep the speed. Also this is not looking at some of the other DE and LB coming in that could se playing time like Jones, Lemonier, Ferguson, Cummings, Werner, and the rest. Anyhow In the 3-4 I see its more like a 5-2. Our OLB are faster lighter DE that can play off the line, drop back in a zone or man up on the TE or maybe a Slot WR. The MLB’s are the big guys and take the RB’s and QB’s, drop in zone or blitz. The DE and DT are all the same for the most part. The NT is the big guy but the DE are also big so its almost like having 3DT. On teams like GT we dont have to stop the pass as much so we run a bigger group but BYU or UF we thin it out and get the speed in the field.
The line up I have above is not the most ideal because I dont know how fast some are or there true size I only have what ESPN and rivles says there weight is so I dont know.

So in truth
NT: BIG UGLY this guys is the OX 300LB+
DE: smaller DT and bigger DE Good size good speed 260-280LB
S OLB: More like a real OLB/DE Bigger but some speed 230-245lb
W OLB: This is the trick one of if not the fastest LB or the best coverage LB. dont get me wrong he needs to hit too
MLB the leader Smart, big and fast. Bradham is my guy
WLB: This is the next in line. Big and powerful. This guy will learn the ways of the Def and take over in 2 years moving to MLB.

God bless, thats long and prob didnt need to go in the thread but this is just my idea. Prob wouldnt work but just a thought.
