No matter what he says, the speculation over Matt Elam’s collegiate future will continue until he actually enrolls at either Florida State or Florida. But, for his part, Elam gave a firm, one-word answer when asked today if there is any chance he will de-commit from Florida State and end up with the Gators:

"No," he said.

Elam, who played linebacker and running back for Dwyer last season, is in San Antonio for the U.S. Army All-American Game is being peppered with questions about a possible re-commitment to Florida.

He said yesterday he will drive to Tallahassee on Sunday and be in class Monday morning. He reiterated that today.

As far as the rumors that he will revert back to his Florida commitment, Elam said he has nothing to do with that discussion.

"Other players are probably telling them that," Elam said.

A spokesman for the U.S. Army All-American Game released a list of players who have requested the chance to make an announcement during Saturday’s broadcast on NBC and Elam is not among them.

Elam ignored two phone calls from Meyer last week, but said the two spoke yesterday and aired their feelings. In their conversation, Elam said Meyer tried to persuade him to come back to the Gators, but Elam was not interested.

Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post has been all over the Elam story. Click the link for the whole story.

Expect this drama and wild speculation to continue all week as subscription sites look to drum up paying customers, to which Elam's emotional vulnerability certainly lends itself.

Thank you for posting this it's getting out of hand. People are straight making isht up.

If he switches I’ll be shocked. I think he like FSU better all along and was just going for Urban.

Pretty much,

Folks need to take recruiting more in stride. Ain’t a daily update for most kids and Elam’s no different.

Perfectly stated. Expect the papers to do the same.

Pay sites

Can’t spread the “premie info” but the pay sites got a quote from him saying he still has some thinking to do etc etc. Don’t know what to make of the kid b/c he has a few things pushing him towards UF. Hard for most kids to divorce themselves from outside pressure and emotion to make a truly rational decision.

If he comes great, but if he doesn’t it isn’t like we were banking on him all year like Jones or Green.

by osceolafan850 on Jan 5, 2010 7:18 PM EST reply actions

You know

This is why I wish there wasn’t the big cottage industry around recruiting.

The guy needs to go where it is best for him to go. If it’s Florida, it’s Florida. If it’s FSU, it’s FSU. The kid’s life is going to be a hectic, loud mess from now ’til he enrolls, and there will be some people who hold this against him no matter which way it goes.

A circus...

Ya just gotta love how people badger 18 yr old kids over the most important decision they have to make at this point in their life…

Don't worry, Elam is not going anywhere.

This is some crazy damage control rumor crap coming out of Hogtown. Elam decommitting after Meyer’s craziness obviosly caused some recruits to start wavering (Mack Brown). However, if the Turds can spin that Easley & Dunk committed, while rumoring the return of Elam, they can continue on with recruiting. Don’t know what toll this is going to take on Meyer as he seems to have lost all of his coaches and will single handedly have to try to save the class. Meanwhile, the Tallahassee spear hunters are gaining strength and the SEC recruiting scavengers have descended upon this gator carrion to try to pick every last little bit of flesh apart.

by NoleLaw on Jan 5, 2010 7:29 PM EST reply actions

It's rather ironic

Since it was comments from Mack Brown (Brown saying UM was gonna be back in August) had everyone thinking Brown was as solid a UF commit as anyone. I would say I feel for Elam, but I don’t. He’s in a truly blessed spot. But that being said, I can only imagine what is being said to him by Meyer.

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 5, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

thats the point im makin

other folks, not Elam, are reporting it….Uncen has in quotes “NO” to the question are you goin back to UF( U of Flustered)

by hntdeerliv4noles on Jan 5, 2010 7:32 PM EST reply actions

I do think this is far from over. But I also know for a fact that our coahes and recruits are all on Elam. If we lose him it’s not for lack of effort, its his Mom, Coach, and Meyer.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 5, 2010 7:32 PM EST reply actions

If early playing time really is his top priority, then FSU is where he should go.

None of Florida’s junior safeties project to a be high draft pick, meaning they’ll likely be back. That means to do more than special teams he’d need to beat out not just the three rotating starters of Wright, Hill, and Black, but also backup Dee Finley and the other current safety commits. He’d get to play safety against Miami University and App State in 2010. That’s about it.

Don't Like the comments made to Rivals.com

Matt’s HS coach is a former walk-on at UF. I don’t like the comments that he made to Rivals about not making the switch “yet.” Many times in his recruitment, I’ve heard Matt use the word yet. Something smells fishy. Looks like we will have to wait until Monday. If he’s in class at FSU on monday then this whole thing is over. It will be a trying time until then.

Looks like this was recently added to the article
Well, it appears Elam is fueling that guessing game just a little. Rivals.com quoted him making these comments:

–On his Monday phone call with Gators coach Urban Meyer: "We were talking about our relationship basically and he told me to have trust, to have trust in him and he asked me a word that really touched me. He said, ‘Do you know what faith means?’ and he told me the definition. It really touched me a lot. It really touched me so my decision might change."

–On his relationship with Meyer: "I’ve known him for a while. It’s been tough to leave him so I don’t know if I’ll be able to do that."

–On whether he’s going to ditch Florida State and re-commit to Florida: "I haven’t switched yet."

by CSI Nole on Jan 5, 2010 8:18 PM EST reply actions

Am I the only person who believes Meyer ain't comin back?

And that this whole thing is a charade that Jeremy Foley has constructed? If Elam goes to UF, he goes to UF. But UM ain’t gonna be the one coaching him, IMO

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 5, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Here it is

1) Who the hell resigns from a job that pays them 4 mil a year, have any of us? You have to have serious health issues if you are going to do that(And a “spirited” practice isn’t going to make you change course).

2) The timing of his “resignation” (Before NSD and after all the best candidates to replace him have already landed jobs), leads me to believe he exhausted every available option before he determined that he couldn’t continue as coach.

3) Strong publicy stated he would not poach off UF’s staff. He has since then made UF’s DB coach Louisville’s DC, I believe, and Kenny Carter has left to go to Louisville as well. I highly doubt he would do that if he were under the impression Meyer was gonna stay.

BTW: The dude is supposedly barred from UF’s football offices as most of us know

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 5, 2010 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

Strong at UofL

He wouldn’t go after UF’s staff but as someone said, it’s a different story when Bedford and Carter reach out to Strong for a job as an assistant.

Wether its Urb lieing or strong poaching the gaytors are not being upfront and the are hurting themselves and the future’s of young men.

by xWd40x on Jan 5, 2010 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

True CSI

But doesn’t that mean there abandoning ship too, like Billy G? Strong could’ve always hired someone else if he wanted to. But them asking Charlie for a gig does change those dynamics a bit. And yes, xWd40x those folks are lying through their teeth to Elam. Meyer is at the direction of Foley, IMO

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 5, 2010 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

What stands out most

Is how Meyer embraced his players and assistants at the end of the Sugar Bowl. I could be wrong but it looked as if he won’t be returning any time soon or ever.

Imagine Elam signing his LOI with UF and Meyer announces his resignation later on this year… Wonder how that will sit with his current commits (esp. Elam).

by CSI Nole on Jan 5, 2010 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

If Meyer is flat out lying to this kid just to save the class for the Gates he truly is a POS! And what’s mom’s love fest with Meyer all about? Didn’t her other son get into some sort of trouble while playing under Meyer? Don’t know mom but you might want to re-think giving him another son who might fall under some bad influence down there in Gunsville.

by vegasnole9399 on Jan 6, 2010 6:17 AM EST up reply actions

Brother Abram

was a backup safety for ND while Meyer was the WR coach. Meyer left for Bowling Green. After he left, Abram got into trouble for some criminal stuff that I’ll not get into (there was a trial and conviction). At that point Abram was no longer at ND. Stories have it that the “community” collected tens of thousands of dollars so that Abram could go to another smaller school, but not Bowling Green or Utah, where Meyer ended up coaching. I think Meyer recruited Abram for ND. Don’t know how much contact or what kind of relationship the two had considering Abram’s and Meyer’s respective positions at ND or whether the relationship continued when Abram found himself in trouble with the law. I posted a fan shot discussing this in more detail, with links to the full story about Abram & what happened here: Elam-Urban connection revisited.

I've got a headache.....

But in all seriousness, I hope Elam make’s the right decision for Matt and not for his mom, Coach, and Urban Meyer of all people.

Hell, why would Elam’s mother and Coach not support Matt for the decision he makes regardless of his choice?

That’s what really makes no sense to me. I understand parents and coaches being instrumental in helping to make sure all of the information is brought to light that is important and help in the decision making process but to say that they are “disappointed in his decision” to go with the ’Noles is way out of line IMO.

But maybe I’m just old school like that.

Wish the guy the best wherever he goes

We all know FSU would be the best for him but young guys have to make that decision. It is the entirety of the FSU class in itself that is going to make the difference. We are past the point where one football player is going to make or break it. That being said Elam is definitely a player in a position of need for us. He would most likely see playing time early.

so true

I remember one saturday when my wife was missing the loss of her former cat. (She had this 24-yr. old cat from the time it was a kitten. The cat died. For the last three years of its life, she had to give it an I-V of fluids due to the cat’s failing kidneys. She had that thing from the time she was a little girl, through HS years, through college & grad school years, through her single life, and for a bout a year into our marriage. Anyway, the cat died.) She found an add in the paper for another cat. It was difficult to find a female cat with the breed and coloring she wanted, and she wouldn’t buy one from a pet store—it had to be a private breeder. Anyway, she found one one I think it was in Tarpon Springs. We took 27 most of the way down, and man, that was the ride that would never end.

by MJC88 on Jan 6, 2010 8:44 AM EST reply actions

Has UF hired a DC?

I think a major advantage that FSU has is all the coaches are in place and Elam can know for certainty who he will be coaching him (Head Coach, DC & DB Coach). He doesn’t have to put his “faith” in a coach with a bad heart and an apparently rocky home life. If I were 17 years old and leaving home to go anywhere I wanted, I would look for some solid ground to set my feet and not a place where I had to learn the definition of faith.

after all the hate that Gata fans showed him on his private Facebook account. I know its a small detail in the grand scheme of things, but he got so much hate on his page from Gata fans that he had to take the darned thing down. But not before posting those comments we know about. Something along the lines of “Thanks for giving me something to play for” or some such thing.

They basically told him “good riddance” about a thousand times. Why WANT to go back to that? UF is a powerhouse program. Gateway to the NFL. Yada yada yada. But when you’re picking between one NFL gateway and another program that surely will become one once again, whats the difference? The fans. We love the guy. Gatas want his arse on a pike. I believe that Elam winds up with some free shoes on his feet. This kid does not want to compete for a position and that is the bottom line. Why are we worried about a kid who would rather go 6-6 in the ACC than go 12-0 in the SEC anyways? He must have watched the Under Armor game and saw that awesome group of "UF Committed" D-Backs and decided that he should look elsewhere. I can’t say I can blame him. Those kids are good.

Dear Matt: Go to FSU.
I don’t want guys who only half-heartedly want to be Gators and would just as soon be ’Noles.
You’re either 100% Gator or you’re Gator Bait.
and you’d better listen to Lawrence, or stuff like this happens to you

He probably needs to make the jump over to get some free shoes ‘cause if he can’t see what "real" competition can do for a D-Back by looking at Joe Haden then he really just wants to "play" and doesn’t care about his future chances to make an NFL teams’ roster.

just a lttle insight

Not trying to stir anything up here, but you guys have to at least understand the frustration coming from the UF faithful about this kid. Let me start by saying I have no opinions on this kid as a person, because I don’t know him, and I try not to develop an opinion based on newspaper reports, but his recruitment has been exhausting…He committed as a junior, one of the first in this class, but has constantly been in headlines because of comments regarding where he would end up. Just over a month ago there were reports that he was leaning toward West Virginia. When you add into that equation that there have been numerous reports that Elam was upset because UF was recruiting other players, and the staff actually didn’t go after specific safeties, just so he wouldn’t be upset, you start getting a clearer picture…All I’m saying is put yourself in our shoes for a moment. A kid commits to FSU as a junior, but you constantly hear about him looking elsewhere, and asking the staff not to recruit anyone else from his position…and then he switches at the last moment to UF. Come on, you guys would be irritated too. I’m not defending the FB posts, because that’s ridiculous, but I completely understand the “just let him go” sentiment surrounding this kid…

Has happened to us as well

DT Marcus Thomas was committed to us for almost an entire year and then decommitted from us to commit to you less than a week before signing day. Difference was we didn’t blast the kid. Sure we were upset and it hurt us bad, but not enough to ridicule the kid (as a whole not a few random posters – that is inevitable regardless of fanbase).

I feel quite certain

That I specifically called the posts against him “ridiculous”, and was merely pointing out how frustrating the situation would be if…Which you confirmed with the “upset and hurt us bad” comment

Sorry, not suggesting you didn't (didn't mean to make it sound like you did)

I just pointed out the differences (which to a certain extent you did as well).

I was also just trying to give a specific (recent) example where we’ve been spurned.

I completely understand the "just let him go" sentiment surrounding this kid

If that’s the case, tell Crier Meyer to leave him alone.
You also have to admit that the only reason he was going to Hogtown was because of Meyer, and that the Meyer long, deliberate, family-first retirement contemplation immeidately followed by “we had a good paractice, I immediately changed my mind, and the first thing I did was call the AD (not wife) to let him know I’m just taking the summer off” fiasco was pretty F’ed up.

nice to know some things never change..

I actually go out of my way to say nothing disparaging about FSU or anything to do with FSU, and this is the response I get? You guys have fun in here, I’ll search for better fans elsewhere…

What did I say disparaging? That Meyer's switcharoo was messed up?

So the kid didn’t pull a Benedict Arnold, he changed for cause. Meyer gave him all the reason in the world to de-commit and go elsewhere. Meyer’s antics (nervous breakdown?) were not Elam’s fault. Only marginally Meyer’s fault for not taking care of his health.

Gainesville was formerly named Hogtown, so that’s an historical reference.

I honestly do not understand what was disparaging.

Rec'd great post

I just hope this KID (he might be big but he is still just a kid) does what is best for him and what will make him happy. If that is going back to UF best of luck to him and hopefully he won’t pick on us too bad when we face them. All in all we got so many other great things going on for our program right now if he was to chose FSU it would just be an extremely great addition to an already outstanding recruiting class.

Oh this kid is gonna pick on us alright.

No more “best of luck” stuff. Come on. Not that I don’t wish him well too, but gimme a break. This isn’t a new-age feelgoodery. I want to win, dammit! And him going to UF makes THAT harder. So good luck at UF, Elam (HORRIBLE choice if you go there…I mean that). However, I hope you NEVER see the field and hurt any of our players (that’s not mean).

If this kid is so in LOOOOOVE with Meyer,

why on earth would he make a big “hat” spectacle and choose FSU. He’s not going to grab an FSU hat and do the chop – he knows damn well that would piss Urban off, which he clearly won’t do after their little digusting fireside chat (Urban faked tears…I know it.) Urban has this kid wrapped around his thumb. He’s going shopping. Urban Meyer Outfitters, not G&G.

…and he will reap the whirlwind.

Not after the Betrayal.

That’s what Urb’s announcement / switcheroo will be forever known as among this year’s UF recruits: The Betrayal.

Meyer

New here and I know a few of you from games and the “other site”(I don’t go there anymore)

I’d like to say and excuse me if this has already been said…I believe um was told by Fooley to recant his resignation to save the recruiting class.I also believe 100% that um will NOT be back on the sidelines and if these kids believe that then I have a ocean view house in Oklahoma I’d like to sell for 10 dollars.
