There was so much talk about our lack of defense this year and it was much deserved. The turnover in staff and poor recruiting are the reasons not coaching, but I believe this may have been the worst year from the fallout in 06' and mainly 07'. Our Recruiting class in 06' contained some solid players i.e. (P. Robinson, Dokota Watson and Rolle) by the way Watson was just a 3 star who ran a 4.62.
It also contained some disapointments that started this year and if they were up to snuff our defense would have at least been average for a Nole D i.e (Budd Thacker, McNeil and Mincey). Marcus Ball LB also transferred and he was projected to be a starter. If the front 4 listed step up and play as recruited we win at least 9 games and win ACC.
In 2007 it gets even worse the 06' class had injury issues etc. and this may be because no depth was recruited the next year and they were overplayed. We recruited no DTs... I will repeat NO DT's. Which impacted us this year. Our only players that saw the field on defense in 07 were Kendall Smith, Maurice Harris and Dionte Allen. And none were standouts including Smith who started, but was no Ernie Sims.
In 2008 it gets much better, but we will continue to have issues at DT and End, but LB and the secondary are addressed with (Bradham, Carr, V. Williams (Injured) Alexander, T. Parks and Moody most considered talented and have been seeing the field. This is what we expect our talent shuffling in and keeping legs fresh eliminating injury.
Last year was even better finally addressing the DE issues (McAllister, Jenkins(Who will be great) and adding at least McDaniel at Tackle. And our secondary recruiting was good with Reid, Harley and Demps.
Looking at the data over the years 2010 may still see issues at Tackle, but defensively at corner, linebacker and end we have an opportunity to compete and the depth to stay healthy. Also with JuCo additions of McCloud and Deas this may help to ease the burden on McDaniel. It is amazing how dramatically a poor recruiting class still has impact, but our defense will be better in 2010 as our 08 and 09 recruiting classes will improve.
So don't give up yet on our defense next year yet this may have been the watershed year.
