Alabama's 12 MNCs vs FSU's 2 MNCs. Explaining the difference.

Ok.  This is my first fan post so I'll try and be interesting.

I was listening to the SVP (Scott Van Pelt) show today and they were discussing Alabama's 12 national championships and how they arrived at such a total.  They referenced that in 1941 Alabama "won" a national championships based on their #1 ranking in the Houlgate System.  So I decided to look up what that was.  For those who don't know, it is some mathematical system a la the Sagarin Ratings.  They also claim a national championship in 1934 based on a few mathematical rating systems.  According to the SVP show in 1941 they were 3rd in the SEC and still claimed a national championship.  In addition they said that one of Alabama's championships was awarded by a New Orleans pharmacist.  (I was unable to track down any Tallahassee pharmacists)  So based on this I went back to see if we are missing any "national championships".    In fact we are:

1980: #1 in the Rothman(FACT) system (1968-present)

1987: #1 in the Berryman(QPRS) (1990-present, awarded retroactively)

1992: #1 in Sagarin Ratings (1978-present)

1994: #1 in the Dunkel System (1929-present)

1996: #1 in the Alderson System (1994-1998) - the only won we should have actually won.

So to summarize.  Congratulations Florida State on your 7 national championships.  I'm going to go print up some shirts with "Got 7?" on them.

If you would like to check other teams just look up NCAA Division 1 FBS National Football Championship on Wikipedia.
