I'm quite sure....

Tonights game against NC St will be picked apart and broken down by those with much more knowledge in a few days. We'll find out who didn't block who, who didn't line up right, who missed the tackle, why Wilson & Co was able to work our defense for all those easy QB draws, 3rd down conversions, etc etc. That stuff is all well & good, kind of like finding out you ran over a nail that caused your tire to blow out after your car rolled 7 times as you're sitting in the hospital bed. Regardless of the cause of the accident it still hurts all the way to the bone.

What I don't understand and can't be explained away by taking an indepth look at film is how our strength has become our biggest liability. Before the start of the season the general outlook was that our offense was better prepared than our defense and would have to carry the load while the defense caught up. Funny thing happened on the way to reality. The offense has been misfiring as much as it has hit the target. Apparently we have an average running game, average offensive line, unknown wide receivers and a QB who dazzles & baffles at the same maddening frequency. Play calling on that side of the ball has been as inconsistent and disappointing. I'm not hear to bash Jimbo, Trickett, Dawsey, Ponder or anyone else, I'm just calling it like I see it. Maybe Ponder peaked last year, maybe Jimbo is still working out the details of being the head cheese, maybe Dawsey isn't a great WR coach, maybe the it's a comedy of errors, maybe the guys catch everything in practice and never miss a block, but the on the field product is just frustrating. Moving forward those things have got to be corrected, and when I say moving forward I mean next year and the year after. After 8 games it's pretty obvious to me that whatever is going on isn't going to be resolved this year. Miami was an abhoration, BC & NC St weren't. Likewise similar games await with Clemson, UNC, possibly Maryland and definately with that little school down the road.

I know this for sure. You don't win many games when your opponent runs 80 plays to your 51, has two 12 play drives, two 13 play drives and a 8+ minute time of possession advantage in the 2nd half. We were supposed to expose & exploit their defense, play keep away, grind out the clock and the roles got reversed. They stole our game plan and handed it back to us on a platter. We got out coached again. We might have beaten them in the YPP category but we lost on the scoreboard. NC St exposed our lack of cohesion and continuity on offense, our inconsistent and unproven WR's and the streaky play of one Sr QB. Same thing almost happened 10 days ago but we got lucky with some late game magic. This week the magic pixie dust landed on the other team. I look forward to the day when we have to no longer worry about such things. Maybe next year.
