Florida State Film Review: Seminoles' Defense v. Virginia's Offense

Welcome to another edition of the Florida State film review.  FSU's defense dominated Virginia all day.

Drive #1

  • Hopkins, D. kickoff 70 yards to the VA0, Horne,R return 24 yards to the VA24 (Harley, J.), PENALTY FS personal foul 15 yards to the VA39, 1st and 10, VA ball on VA39.  The personal foul here was awful.  Jenije was going down because the guy pushed him.
  •  V 1-10 V39 Verica,M pass incomplete to Burd,K. It was absolutely ridiculous what they got away with.  FSU came out and played cover-2 man under (2 deep with corners and linebackers in man).  Moody is late getting over top but it doesn't cost FSU.  Markus White smoked the right tackle with a nice inside swim.
  •  V 2-10 V39 PENALTY VA holding (Cabbell,B.J) 10 yards to the VA29.  Excellent play by White, Jacobbi McDaniel, and Nigel Bradham cleans up.   Right guard has to tackle McDaniel.
  •  V 2-20 V29 Jones,P rush for 3 yards to the VA32 (Moody, N.).  Markus White and Bradham play this quite well.  Moody takes an iffy angle and could have been called for the horse collar but was not.
  •  V 3-17 V32 Jones,P rush for 3 yards to the VA35 (Dawkins, E.;Bradham, N.).   Excellent job by McDaniel and White!  Bradham cleans it up.
  •  V 4-14 V35 Howell,J punt 50 yards to the FS15, Reid, G. return 7 yards to the FS22 (Aiken,D;Milien,M).  Demps blows a block here otherwise Reid has about 13.
  • 3 plays, minus 4 yards, TOP 01:58

Star-divide

Drive #2

  • Hopkins, D. kickoff 45 yards to the VA25, out-of-bounds, VA ball on VA40.   Ridiculous.  Not much analysis here.
  • Va 1-10 at Va40 VIRGINIA drive start at 08:40. Va 1-10 at Va40 Verica,M pass incomplete to Burd,K (Rhodes, X.).  3-step drop from I-formation.  Protection is very good despite Brandon Jenkins getting an excellent jump.  Rhodes makes a great break on the comeback route and crushes the receiver with perfect timing.  Rhodes is a good corner who might turn into a great corner.
  • Va 2-10 at Va40 Verica,M pass complete to Jones,P for 1 yard to the VA41, fumble forced by Alexander, M., fumble by Jones,P recovered by VA TEAM at VA41, out-of-bounds. Tremendous hit by Mister Alexander on the screen pass.  One of the best FSU hits I have ever seen.
  • Va 3-9 at Va41 Verica,M pass incomplete to Inman,D.  Excellent zone blitz by FSU.  Guy was open but pressure forced a wild throw.  Well executed.
  • Va 4-9 at Va41 Howell,J punt 29 yards to the FS30, downed. Drive: 3 plays, 1 yards, TOP 01:04   Chad Abram needs to lay his man out here so Greg can catch the ball.  Almost a disaster here as the refs could have given this to UVA off Christian Jones.

Drive #3

  • Hopkins, D. kickoff 70 yards to the VA0, Horne,R return 25 yards to the VA25 (Demps, G.).  Excellent kickoff 6 yards deep!  Either Dent or Haggins misses the tackle (can't see the number).  Should have been stopped at the 17.
  • Va 1-10 at Va25 VIRGINIA drive start at 07:24. Va 1-10 at Va25 Jones,P rush for 10 yards to the VA35, 1ST DOWN VA (Moody, N.;Reid, G.).  Everybody gets blocked.  Jenkins doesn't squeeze.  McDaniel doesn't hold ground.  Linebackers don't fill.  Ugly.
  • Va 1-10 at Va35 Verica,M pass incomplete to Milien,M, dropped pass.  Pass to the flats.  Alexander probably stops him for a gain of 4, but this was an ugly throw and I give FSU no credit for it.  Pure bad offense by UVA.
  • Va 2-10 at Va35 Verica,M pass incomplete to Burd,K.  I-formation shifted to pro-set.  FSU plays cover-2 man (shell).  Throw is iffy but the coverage by Xavier Rhodes on this deep comeback (or square in) is decent.
  • Va 3-10 at Va35 Verica,M pass complete to Jones,P for no gain to the VA35 (Smith, K.).  Stoops brings another zone blitz on 3rd-long.  5 come and Brandon Jenkins drops.  UVA runs a screen.  Well designed, but FSU's players are too talented.  Good recognition by Jenkins.  Excellent hustle by Amp McCloud and Nigel Bradham and they actually run into each other.  Kendall Smith with the nice cleanup and hustle.
  • Va 4-10 at Va35 Howell,J punt 51 yards to the FS14, fair catch by Reid, G.  Excellent punt.
  • Drive: 4 plays, 10 yards, TOP 01:29

Drive #4

  • Hopkins, D. kickoff 70 yards to the VA0, touchback. Va 1-10 at Va20 VIRGINIA drive start at 14:56.  Finally got his act together.
  • Va 1-10 at Va20 Payne,K rush for 3 yards to the VA23 (Bradham, N.;McAllister, D.).  McDaniel blown off the ball by the double team.  Really bad effort there.
  • Va 2-7 at Va23 Verica,M sacked for loss of 8 yards to the VA15 (Rhodes, X.).  Stoops brings a corner blitz.  Hadn't seen that yet this year.  Good pressure by Jones and Rhodes cleans it up.
  • Va 3-15 at Va15 Verica,M sacked for loss of 5 yards to the VA10 (McAllister, D.).  Tremendous coverage and all 4 rushers eventually close in.  Coverage sack and protection was not terrible.
  • Va 4-20 at Va10 Howell,J punt 43 yards to the FS47, Reid, G. return -2 yards to the FS45 (Womack,T;Freedman,P).   Don't like the blocking right now on the punt returns.  Not awful but nothing special.
  • Drive: 3 plays, minus 10 yards, TOP 02:11

Drive #5

  • Hopkins, D. kickoff 70 yards to the VA0, touchback.
  • Va 1-10 at Va20 VIRGINIA drive start at 10:18. Va 1-10 at Va20 Jones,P rush for loss of 1 yard to the VA19 (Dawkins, E.;Rhodes, X.).  FSU isn't even lined up all the way but boy does Everett Dawkins play this great.  Gets penetration then shuffles down the line to his help.  Great play.
  • Va 2-11 at Va19 Verica,M pass complete to Payne,K for 10 yards to the VA29 (Smith, K.;Jones, C.), PENALTY FS personal foul (Moody, N.) 15 yards to the VA44, 1ST DOWN VA.   Very nice spin move by Jenkins.  Quick drop-off to the back.  Verica hadn't taken this all day and FSU was giving it.  Moody spears the guy with his helmet and gets flagged.
  • Va 1-10 at Va44 1st and 10. Va 1-10 at Va44 Verica,M pass complete to Payne,K for 16 yards to the FS40, 1ST DOWN VA (Smith, K.;Moody, N.). Looks like there is a coverage bust here.  Rhodes is playing man while one of the backers is playing zone. That means the flat is uncovered.
  • Va 1-10 at Fs40 Verica,M pass incomplete. Rhodes on the zone blitz right into the backside of a poorly-faked bootleg.
  • Va 2-10 at Fs40 Jones,P rush for 1 yard to the FS39 (Bradham, N.).  FSU brings the blitz again and hits it.  Numbers.
  • Va 3-9 at Fs39 Payne,K rush for 8 yards to the FS31 (Moody, N.;Dawkins, E.). Pitch to the big man.   UVA blocks this really, really well, and it's a play you don't see coming.  Who pitches to the fullback to the short side when they need 9 yards?  UVA did.  White, Dawkins, Bradham, and Rhodes all pinned inside.
  • Va 4-1 at Fs31 Payne,K rush for 1 yard to the FS30, 1ST DOWN VA (Jenkins, B.).  This play was complete garbage.  Smith flat out crushes the back in mid air and he doesn't even get back to the original line of scrimmage, but the refs give it to him anyway.
  • Va 1-10 at Fs30 PENALTY VA unsportsmanlike conduct (Mihota,A) 15 yards to the FS45.
  • Va 1-25 at Fs45 1st and 10. Va 1-10 at Fs45 Jones,P rush for 2 yards to the FS43 (White, M.).  Nice job holding ground by everyone.  Just a stack.  Markus White set the edge.
  • Va 2-8 at Fs43 Verica,M sacked for loss of 2 yards to the FS45 (White, M.).   FSU brings the blitz, nice move by Jenkins, Verica refuses to take the checkdown, and White cleans it up.
  • Va 3-10 at Fs45 Verica,M pass incomplete to Torchia,J, dropped pass.   Outlet pass on 3rd-10 and Mike Harris crushes the tight end as he bobbles the ball.  Never a threat for the first down.  UVA holding ridiculously here.
  • Va 4-10 at Fs45 Howell,J punt 45 yards to the FS0, touchback.
  • Drive: 10 plays, 35 yards, TOP 04:29  Not a good drive for FSU but the refs didn't help.

Drive #6

  • Va 1-10 at Va20 VIRGINIA drive start at 02:30. Va 1-10 at Va20 Verica,M pass incomplete to Jones,P.   Screen pass.  Overthrown but FSU had it played very well for a 3-4 yard loss had he caught it.  Excellent job by Jenkins as well.
  • Va 2-10 at Va20 Verica,M pass incomplete to Burd,K.   Quick drop, post, badly thrown behind.  Had he thrown it on target there would have been a nice collision between Parks and the receiver.
  • Va 3-10 at Va20 Verica,M pass incomplete to Torchia,J.   Tremendous coverage from Mike Harris on the hybrid WR/TE.  In his hip pocket all the way.  UVA tried to go quick verticals on this drive and it was ugly.
  • Va 4-10 at Va20 Howell,J punt 38 yards to the FS42, Reid, G. return 23 yards to the VA35 (Snyder,M;Womack,T).
  • Drive: 3 plays, 0 yards, TOP 00:24

Drive #7

  • Va 1-10 at Va25 VIRGINIA drive start at 11:58. Va 1-10 at Va25 Jones,P rush for loss of 1 yard to the VA24 (Jenkins, B.).  Tremendous play by Everett Dawkins to ride the hip and make the play.
  • Va 2-11 at Va24 Verica,M pass complete to Burd,K for 76 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN VA, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:13. Randolph,R kick attempt good. Florida State 27, Virginia 7  Corner zone blitz, Nick Moody has deep responsibility here, and he doesn't play it.  Busted coverage.  As I said in the preview, UVA can't beat FSU unless it has mental busts.
  • Drive: 2 plays, 75 yards, TOP 00:45

Drive #8

  • Va 1-10 at Va07 VIRGINIA drive start at 08:31. Va 1-10 at Va07 Verica,M pass complete to Burd,K for 9 yards to the VA16 (Jones, C.).   Soft cover 3, Reid late to break on the ball.
  • Va 2-1 at Va16 Jones,P rush for 3 yards to the VA19, 1ST DOWN VA (Bradham, N.;Jones, C.).   Very nice cutback running on a power to the boundary.
  • Va 1-10 at Va19 PENALTY VA holding (Cabbell,B.J) 9 yards to the VA10.  Finally UVA gets flagged for holding as its right guard executes a takedown.
  • Va 1-19 at Va10 Jones,P rush for 4 yards to the VA14 (Jenkins, B.). Poorly played by Markus White, loses point of attack.
  • Va 2-15 at Va14 Verica,M pass complete to Inman,D for 6 yards to the VA20 (Reid, G.).  FSU in soft zone here and UVA only grabs 6 on 2nd-15.  Flip to the running back.
  • Va 3-9 at Va20 Verica,M pass complete to Payne,K for 13 yards to the VA33, 1ST DOWN VA (Reid, G.).  Poorly played by Christian Jones.  Too much of a spot drop.
  • Va 1-10 at Va33 Payne,K rush for 2 yards to the VA35 (Smith, K.;Jenkins, B.).   Pretty well squeezed by Jenkins.
  • Va 2-8 at Va35 Verica,M pass complete to Inman,D for 24 yards to the FS41, 1ST DOWN VA (Rhodes, X.).  Same zone blitz as first quarter, Markus White drops, 5 come, UVA throws the post over White in front of Rhodes.  Only difference is pressure gets picked up this time so throw isn't wild. Jenije late.
  • Va 1-10 at Fs41 Burd,K rush for no gain to the FS41 (Rhodes, X.).  Great play by Rhodes.  Stayed home on end around.
  • Va 2-10 at Fs41 Verica,M pass complete to Torchia,J for 11 yards to the FS30, 1ST DOWN VA (Harris, M.).
  • Va 1-10 at Fs30 Timeout Virginia, clock 03:12.
  • Va 1-10 at Fs30 Verica,M pass intercepted by Reid, G. at the FS0, Reid, G. return 0 yards to the FS0, touchback.   Bad play be the QB.  Not much in terms of a great defensive play.
  • Drive: 10 plays, 63 yards, TOP 05:27

After this is "garbage time" and I don't break that down in the interest of time.

I loved drive #4

It was awesome watching it unfold. Corner blitz on 2nd, then a beautiful coverage sack on 3rd. Darn impressive

Then I need better paychecks.

After further consideration

These are better. Scoreboards of 45 – 0 over Gators/UM are pretty sexy.

We are not into the meat of our schedule yet

the stats should get worse – 4 good Os left to play – 3 not so much Os
Obviously this years D is better than last years though

I'll say this...

Even if Clemson, UF, and Miami hang 40 on us each, I’m still going to be pleased with our improvement.

The bottom line is that last year we couldn’t stop anyone, good or bad. If we can stop bad and mediocre offenses this year, that is a good improvement.

Next year hopefully we contain good offenses. Keep them in the 20’s.

Year after that we can hopefully be shutting down almost everyone.

Blocking on punt returns

Bud mentioned it above and I wanted to emphasize it – it seems like our blocking on punt returns has been substandard over the past few games. Reid almost never has a chance because the kicking team is in his face as soon as he catches the ball.

Not only are we not taking advantage of a valuable resource in Reid, but his competitive nature is causing him to take dangerous chances that could backfire.

by devnole on Oct 5, 2010 9:19 AM EDT reply actions

That punt could have been

very unlucky, bounced almost straight backwards after hitting. Very unusual. Looked like on Sunshine it went right by Jones and bounced off UVA player that was right in front of him first. Right in between the two players. Lucky.

I wonder If FSU will take so many chances with the blitz on Harris. They do well against the blitz.

Moody on the busted play

I was so unsure when I watched it initially, bc everyone was up so I figured Moody had run responsibility so it was either Parks, Reid, Kendall or Bradham. Thanks for the recap.

I thought Moody was blitzing on the 76-yard bomb.

If I recall, he blitzed from UVA’s right side and a running back picked up the block. He almost drives his man into the QB, but Verica gets it off in time.

i'm probably confusing plays.

But one thing is for certain: Nigel Bradham can run straight very fast.
He was catching Burd on the 76-yarder.

Looks like Parks comes down very low pre-snap

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Yup.

Moody was blitizing on the play

Don’t think so. Moody squares up his body on the play fake. He started as deep as the line backers. He might have had run responsibility but he was in no position to fill at hole at the depth he was at on the play fake.

that's what I saw too

I defer to those in the know, but just assumed that Moody lined up at same position as LB meant he was in run support

It looked like Reid was trailing the receiver over the middle

So I wonder if Reid perhaps blew this coverage, because I swear I saw him trailing

he hesitated as if to think about it for a moment then kept running with the receiver from his side, then BOOM the receiver crossed the field (as Verica would later to say, to clear the zone out for the underneath route). The more I think about this, the more I think Reid blew this.

It appears to me that our DL is often lining up a yard or so off of the neutral zone

Is there a reason for this, or am I just seeing things?

Drive #2

Was that the play where the announcer says "That’s why they call him “Mister”?

by 93noleman on Oct 5, 2010 9:45 AM EDT reply actions

That’s dumb and it’s a good way to get brain damage. If you think you are concussed or are not feeling well in the head you need to step off.

I hated this play. Mister lays the wood but he doesn’t wrap up. Next week that same play could go for more yards because Mister just lowered his shoulder. If you are going to drop your should you need to make sure you hit the player low. Poor tackling form, IMO.

by evenflow58 on Oct 5, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, maybe he didn't wrap up

But that’s exactly the kind of hit I wanna see. The reason Mister didn’t wrap up is because he saw the ball-carrier drop his shoulders in attempt to run thru Mister’s tackle. Basically Mister wasn’t havin that ish. By the time they hit, they were both committed.

Saw Peter Warrick play once. The rest is history...

just seemed like a disproportionate amount of man was being played. Don’t know if there is some intention to run more against Miami (I can’t imagine that) or if it was something where Stoops felt we could work on it. Was just wondering.

by AMFKNole on Oct 5, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

Cover 2 shell is a great way to give your corners help inside / over the top. And since Verica is no threat to scramble, we could mix in more man-to-man against them. We can couch it with Stoops emphasis on “being multiple.”

This is a bit of a conspiracy theory, but perhaps Stoops wants to goad Whipple into thinking we’ll run a lot of man coverage (a la 2009), have him gameplan for that type of coverage, and then sit in a zone all night and wait for the presents.

In all seriousness

as serious as you can be over that craptastic finish, the refs SHOULD have been standing over the ball while LSU ran guys on and off the field. They failed. If the refs did what they were supposed to do the clock very well may have hit zero while the ref was over the ball. And LSU would have lost the way they were supposed to.

I think that's the old scheme's mindset

We need to be able to play the run and the pass, as opposed to “letting the DL off their chains” so to speak. Our sacks haven’t come from one player is destroying the opposing competition (Everette Brown); they’ve come from coverage sacks – where the coverage forces the QB to make checks to find the open throw, and the fact that even the good OL can’t maintain their blocks for more than 4 or so seconds. It’s a systems-based approach (coverage + front 4) rather than “out-athleting” your opponent. This is a welcome change.

Think more like the OU game

than the other 4 games – with what our D line will do against Miami’s OL

by 93noleman on Oct 5, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

How so?

OU did short drops, screen passes, and swing passes. Not a good measure of pass rush because they took the pass rush out of the equation

FSU Defense 2010: Taking back 1st down.

by ricobert1 on Oct 5, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is odd, because

There was no evidence that we HAD a pass rush prior to OU.

Personally, I think they just wanted to get the ball to playmakers as quickly as possible w/out using the run. Jones had been inconsistent up until the FSU game, so they used the short stuff to get him in sync. Couple that with a very effective no-huddle, and boom goes the dynamite.

Agreed OU was held to 2.3 per rush and that was half of their attempted plays.

This DL may not be deadly yet, but they are well coached and very legitimate.

Man defense

Is still one of the best to call and can give offenses a harder time. I think Stoops is just getting more comfortable with his guys and seeing that in many cases they have superior talent and speed. In those cases Man Defense is the best to run.

I think there will be more zone against miami but who are we kidding? In that game the kids play as hard as they can. I look forward to the game.

Playing man against Miami is a disaster

Our DBs will get torched

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

You blitz bad QBs. You play coverage against good QBs and good Olines. UM has a good Oline, although I would expect to see some zone blitzes (I hate this phrase) sprinkled in there.

by evenflow58 on Oct 5, 2010 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Define "good".......in reference to UM's OLine.

I have not seen this “good” OLine yet. (admittedly small sample set).

Great read Bud, thanks!

I really enjoyed seeing our defense bring some varied blitzes to the table rather than just the standard, linebacker shoots between a gap in the line approach. Makes Miami prepare for more and it shows Stoops is beginning to trust his players to understand the system more and more. Good all around!
One quick grammar note Bud: on drive 8, the second to last bullet point you wrote “Bad play be the QB”. I’m sure you meant “by the QB.”

by DCNole on Oct 5, 2010 9:48 AM EDT reply actions

Anyone have any idea why

our kick return team is dead last in the nation in return yards?? I understand that we’ve had nearly half the amount of return opportunities because of the lack of scoring allowed by the D. But still, our average is 13.40 yards per return. With LJ and G5 back there, we should be ballin’on returns.

by ActiveAgent on Oct 5, 2010 10:01 AM EDT reply actions

It looks to me like EVERY TIME Joyner gets the ball he turns and runs east-west at the 10 yard line

I don’t know if that’s the call being made from the sideline, or if he just does that, but it’s getting irritating. Gotta be northsouth there.

it's becoming painfully obvious with each passing game

It was either BYU or Wake, but I watched the same player allow his man to ruin Greg’s return on consecutive punts, and 3 times overall.
Maybe it’s time for Gran to shake up personnel.
Joyner is looking like Michael Ray Garvin pre-2008. He’s hoping magical running lanes and fountains of youth will appear from nowhere. You have to hit the first hole and let instincts take over. (Please no TWSS jokes, it’s played out)

by The K-Man on Oct 5, 2010 11:10 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

yup,

too much sideways running. Not sure if it is all on him or not. I’m sure the blocking can be better but so could Joyner.

Anyways, I’d be interested to get AJ back there to see what he can do. Especially with Joyner’s ankle injury. He hasn’t shown he can be a factor back there, so why jeopardize his spot in the CB rotation?

Right. No matter where on the field Joyner gets the ball, he will always run to his right instead of going straight ala Michael Ray Garvin.

if you mean the median yards per return in the nation

the median is 21.93. thats nearly 10 yards more per return than we are averaging, with arguably, the 2 best return men in the game. What we are gaining the kick off game, we are giving away in the return game. It’s a head scracther to say the least.

I will say, at least G5 is getting in front of someone now when LJ gets the ball. I wouldn’t call it full on blocking, but it’s not O’leh that he was doing at the beginning of the year, A la, OU game.

Doak Campbell Stadium
Florida State overpowered Miami from the start to hand the ‘Canes their worst defeat since 1927. It wasn’t just the offense that was effective for the ’Noles as they piled up 422 yards, but the defense was equally impressive. The ’Noles D limited the ’Canes to 131 yards of total offense and -33 yards rushing.

Kick off and Punt coverage

I don’t think they have been practicing those, due to injury risk, we are not that deep. Also, Fisher doesn’t like contact just for contact. I’m sure we are working on it, just probably emphazing other parts more.

Isn't starting field position important?

Especially against a good defense. Hopefully they will place a huge emphasis on the return game this week. It could be the difference.

I love knowing every game we play the players have the opportunity to get better and Stoops has more chances to know the limitations of his players.

I’m glad Moody’s glitch came one week before Miami.

I wonder if by now Stoops has gotten a feel for just how much he can get out of the best 11 players he puts out on the field.

Whipple will do everything he can to force another “glitch”. I won’t be surprised if we see another v Miami. Our defensive backs are good, but very inexperienced. Whipple will try to fool them with anything he can to get those big WR’s open down the middle of the field.

Some big players in my area are betting big on FSU bc the fact that Jacory is probably not going to play this weekend. Does anyone know if there is any substance to back this up? On Sportsbook there is no line up for the game.

today FSU will release that ponders arm fell off….tomorrow’s release will be EJ forgot his play book and was kicked off the team. shortly after a leaked youtube video will surface of greg reid running the spread option against our scout team which will be made up of cheerleaders and FSU’s drumline

Jacory not playing does not help us

By giving us a good game and a measuring stick. This team will only grow through adversity and playing teams like Miami. I’m looking forward to beating them while they are at full strength.

by ActiveAgent on Oct 6, 2010 10:08 AM EDT reply actions

I hate when people talk about beating others teams with no excuses.

Who cares? Any advantage we get for a win is great. I’d rather beat a Miami team with half their starters injured than lose to them at full strength.

by reznik1979 on Oct 6, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, that does us a lot of good to win THAT game.

I’m talking about in the overall scheme. Winning on the road, with them at FULL strength, will do more for us as a team for future experience, confidence and just getting better as a team overall.

I’m all for taking advantage of others misfortunes. But, I want this team to get better. That happens when you play quality opponents.
