Florida State Film Review: Seminoles' Offense v. Virginia's Defense
Welcome to another edition of the Florida State Film Review. Let's take a look at the Florida State Seminoles' offense against the Virginia Cavaliers' defense.
A lot of people have been heaping criticism upon Christian Ponder and the receivers. Others have blamed the offensive line for the struggles in the passing game. After watching the last few games and talking with people close to the team, I can tell you that the major problem is the offensive line's inability to pass protect for any length of time. The QB and WRs are not playing poorly, though they are not playing great. All of the rollouts, quick throws, and bubble screens against Virginia are a direct reaction to the line troubles. Here's a quick video of the poor protection on Saturday:
Can this problem be remedied? I don't think so. Rodney Hudson cannot go back in time and not get sick and get the full benefit of the off-season program. David Spurlock cannot go back in time, avoid a concussion, and get the benefit of all the fall practices he missed. Andrew Datko has already had two shoulder procedures of which we are aware, and he cannot all of a sudden become 100%. But it can get better. The question is how much and how soon?
Drive #1
- F 1-10 F22 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 13:02. F 1-10 F22 Ponder, C. rush for loss of 17 yards to the FS5, fumble forced by Reynolds,L, fumble by Ponder, C. recovered by FS Thomas, J. at FS5, Thomas, J. for 14 yards to the FS19 (Wallace,De). An awful opening play. Rodney Hudson gets blown back into the backfield and I question whether he even knew the snap count given how late he was off the ball. I also think Zebrie Sanders might have had double responsibility here and if that is the case he just completely bypassed it. Credit doesn't go to UVA but rather blame belongs to FSU. Heady play by Jermaine Thomas!
- F 2-13 F19 Pryor, L. rush for 4 yards to the FS23 (Walcott,A). 2 RB Gun triple-option veer look. Lonnie Pryor with good hard running. Very well blocked but Lonnie needs to beat that backer in the hole.
- F 3-9 F23 Ponder, C. pass complete to Reliford, B. for 16 yards to the FS39, 1ST DOWN FS (McLeod,R). K-Gun. 6 man protection. Nice job by Christian to move in the pocket and excellent job by Beau Reliford to come back for the football. Who knew FSU had a tight end? Man coverage from UVA.
- F 1-10 F39 Ponder, C. pass complete to Haulstead, W. for 13 yards to the VA48, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Mosley,C). Really soft cover-2 from UVA. K-Gun 3-step game. Ponder doesn't mess around and hits Haulstead on the low side of the smash. Haulstead excellent effort to get 5 more.
- F 1-10 V48 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Reed, B. (Minnifield,C). Empty set with a tight end. Protection was ok. Christian Ponder throws this one poorly. Not sure what the route was. Good job by Bert Reed to play DB. Throw is late and just awful. Perhaps he couldn't step up because Zebrie didn't protect all that well but I don't like the decision.
- F 2-10 V48 Alexander, A.J. rush for 8 yards to the VA40 (Mosley,C;Reynolds,L). A.J. Alexander needed to replace Bert Reed as the end-around man and he runs it quite well. 3WR 2 RB gun. Excellent block by David Spurlock, though perhaps a bit dirty. Alexander has nice open field moves. FSU should do this more. Showing it makes Miami waste practice time on it.
- F 3-2 V40 Ponder, C. rush for 5 yards to the VA35, 1ST DOWN FS (McLeod,R;Walcott,A), PENALTY VA face mask (McLeod,R) 15 yards to the VA20, 1ST DOWN FS. Bootleg, good fake, nice blocks by Reliford and Pryor. Ponder gets facemasked and not hit too hard though he didn't slide.
- F 1-10 V20 1st and 10. F 1-10 V20 Thompson, C. rush for 1 yard to the VA19, fumble by Thompson, C. recovered by FS Thompson, C. at VA19. 2 RB veer triple. Ponder nice fake to Lonnie but a poor pitch to Chris Thompson. Thompson needs to catch that, however, so bad plays by both of them.
- F 2-9 V19 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Reed, B. This ball should have been picked. FSU is in the I-form, wants to hit Reed on the deep cross. FSU is in an eight-man protection and uses play-action and still has a protection bust! Man in Ponder's face makes him float this ball. Bert Reed quits on the route and allows the DB to undercut him! This is a fail all the way around, should have been a turnover, and is not quality FSU football.
- F 3-9 V19 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Reed, B. (Minnifield,C). Protection was good but the UVA corner had great coverage. Ponder throws this ball on the post before Reed makes his break, as he is supposed to do, but Bert doesn't sell the outside fake well enough to gain inside position. Really bad opening series for Reed. Good job stepping up for Ponder.
- F 4-9 V19 Hopkins, D. field goal attempt from 37 GOOD, clock 08:40. FLORIDA STATE 3, VIRGINIA 0
- Drive: 11 plays, 59 yards, TOP 04:22 A decent but not great opening drive.
Drive #2
- Fs 1-10 at Fs30 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 07:36. Fs 1-10 at Fs30 Thomas, J. rush for 70 yards to the VA0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 07:24. Hopkins, D. kick attempt good. FSU tells its backs "We'll block the safeties, you better beat that corner." Jermaine Thomas did just that here. Play is outside zone to the right (short side). Orelus, Spurlock, and McMahon with nice blocks. Haulstead blocks the safety. Thomas makes a great move on the corner and then runs 60 yards. FSU doesn't have an elite back, but this is an elite move by Thomas.
- Florida State 10, Virginia 0 Drive: 1 plays, 70 yards, TOP 00:12 Explosive drive.
Drive #3
- Fs 1-10 at Fs14 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:55. Fs 1-10 at Fs14 Thomas, J. rush for 2 yards to the FS16 (Carter,D;Greer,S). This series marked the start of the read play from the pistol. UVA defends this really well and closed quick after the give.
- Fs 2-8 at Fs16 Ponder, C. pass complete to Easterling, T. for 7 yards to the FS23 (Dowling,R). K-Gun. Cover-3 from UVA. Protection is excellent as is the throw on the 7-yard pass to Easterling.
- Fs 3-1 at Fs23 Thomas, J. rush for 2 yards to the FS25, 1ST DOWN FS (Greer,S;Womack,T). Jabarris Little and Beau Reliford have nice blocks here. Orelus and Spurlock mess up and never climb to the linebacker! Nobody picks up the linebacker and Thomas has to fight for the first down.
- Fs 1-10 at Fs25 Ponder, C. rush for 9 yards to the FS34 (McLeod,R). K-Gun. Cover-3. Reading the backside again. Great job by Ponder with the fake. Very nice block by Reliford.
- Fs 2-1 at Fs34 Thompson, C. rush for 11 yards to the FS45, 1ST DOWN FS (Dowling,R). Zone play to the right. Reliford/Orelus nice blocks on the edge and Thompson good, decisive read.
- Fs 1-10 at Fs45 Timeout Florida State, clock 03:25. Ridiculous. I expect more from Fisher and crew to not have the right personnel on the field.
- Fs 1-10 at Fs45 Thompson, C. rush for 1 yard to the FS46 (McLeod,R;Dolce,J). Great play by the nickel corner to jump in the hole. Though Thompson knocked him out.
- Fs 2-9 at Fs46 Ponder, C. rush for 5 yards to the VA49 (Mosley,C). Empty set 4 WR TE. Double-bubble fake, QB draw with Spurlock wrapping underneath. Gets back to a manageable 3rd down.
- Fs 3-4 at Va49 Ponder, C. pass complete to Reliford, B. for 16 yards to the VA33, 1ST DOWN FS (Dowling,R). Great designed play. FSU runs double slants and there is nobody to cover Reliford. Easy throw and an easy catch. Beau with good effort to get 3-4 tougher yards.
- Fs 1-10 at Va33 Thompson, C. rush for 9 yards to the VA24 (Walcott,A). Great blocking on the read play. Not even sure Thompson hits the correct hole. Says something that he gets 9 yards and had an even better hole!
- Fs 2-1 at Va24 Thompson, C. rush for 7 yards to the VA17, 1ST DOWN FS (Walcott,A). Inside zone to the boundary.. The cuts on the backside are good enough, while McMahon blocks very well. Thompson gets skinny through the hole and picks it up.
- Fs 1-10 at Va17 Thomas, J. rush for 5 yards to the VA12 (Walcott,A;Joseph,D). Power to the wide side. Tremendous block by Spurlock. Nice effort from the OLine and Pryor.
- Fs 2-5 at Va12 Timeout Virginia, clock 00:22. Fs 2-5 at Va12 Thomas, J. rush for loss of 3 yards to the VA15 (Johnson,C). Just a great call by UVA on a stunt. FSU misses the pickup. Should be McMahon or Spurlock on the backside. Play was another read play.
- Fs 3-8 at Va15 Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00.
- Fs 3-8 at Va15 Ponder, C. pass complete to Haulstead, W. for 15 yards to the VA0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 14:56. Hopkins, D. kick attempt good. Tremendous slant-n-go by Willie Haulstead. Protection is awful. David Spurlock gets beat again and makes Ponder backpedal while he pumps. Ball is much wider than it would have been had he not had pressure in his face. Nice adjustment by Haulstead. Spurlock has been terrible this year in pass protection and I think his concussion issues are the culprit- not that he was ever good at pass pro anyway.
- Florida State 17, Virginia 0 Drive: 13 plays, 86 yards, TOP 05:59
Drive #4
- Fs 1-10 at Fs45 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 12:45. Fs 1-10 at Fs45 PENALTY FS holding (Spurlock, D.) 10 yards to the FS35. Holding call negates touchdown and Spurlock gets beat here. Hold call is marginal but it is again David Spurlock getting his behind whipped in pass protection. Miami and any decent defensive lineman will eat his lunch as well. If there's a hold it is at the very end. Spurlock doesn't have his balance. Ponder needs to throw a better ball here though there was again Spurlock's guy in his face. He did put it right on Bert who scored.
- Fs 1-20 at Fs35 Ponder, C. pass complete to Haulstead, W. for 7 yards to the FS42 (Dowling,R). Quick out. Nice job getting back to manageable. Quick blocking.
- Fs 2-13 at Fs42 Ponder, C. rush for 2 yards to the FS44, out-of-bounds. Orelus gets whipped here by the defensive end and Ponder can't even get to his second progression.
- Fs 3-11 at Fs44 Ponder, C. rush for 12 yards to the VA44, 1ST DOWN FS (Dolce,J;Mosley,C). Spurlock and Orelus do an awful job handling the twist. Ponder makes a tremendous run. That's all him.
- Fs 1-10 at Va44 Thompson, C. rush for 25 yards to the VA19, 1ST DOWN FS (Womack,T). Outside zone to the boundary, going left. Tremendous blocks by Sanders, Hudson, and Pryor. Great balance and patience by Thompson.
- Fs 1-10 at Va19 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Easterling, T., PENALTY VA personal foul (Minnifield,C) 9 yards to the VA10, 1ST DOWN FS. Protection on play-action here isn't awful, but they do give a lot of ground. Ponder scrambles right, nobody open, throws it away. Easterling cheap-shotted in the endzone.
- Fs 1-G at Va10 1st and 10. Fs 1-G at Va10 Thomas, J. rush for 10 yards to the VA0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 10:18. Hopkins, D. kick attempt good. Excellent blocking by Orelus and Lonnie Pryor. Pryor pancakes the linebacker. Good blocking by Rodney Smith as well. Jermaine runs hard and doesn't give up and gets into the endzone!
- Florida State 24, Virginia 0 Drive: 6 plays, 55 yards, TOP 02:27
Drive #5
- Fs 1-10 at Fs20 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:49. Fs 1-10 at Fs20 Ponder, C. pass complete to Smith, R. for 5 yards to the FS25. Rollout, hitch to Rodney Smith. Easy 5 on first down.
- Fs 2-5 at Fs25 Thomas, J. rush for 4 yards to the FS29 (Taliaferro,A;Conrath,M). Jermaine hits this inside, probably because he was yelled at for not running hard against BYU and Wake, but he may have had a TD if he breaks outside. Good run blocking by the line.
- Fs 3-1 at Fs29 Thomas, J. rush for 5 yards to the FS34, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Dowling,R). Outside zone. Zebrie messes this up but Thomas and Pryor run wide and Jabarris Little makes a good block too.
- Fs 1-10 at Fs34 Thomas, J. rush for loss of 5 yards to the FS29 (Taliaferro,A). Outside zone to the boundary again. This is sealed off except McMahon doesn't get the linebacker. The linebacker makes the tackle.
- Fs 2-15 at Fs29 Ponder, C. pass complete to Reed, B. for 5 yards to the FS34 (Minnifield,C;Parr,Z). Poorly thrown bubble by Ponder. Never got the handle on the ball. Blocking is TREMENDOUS by the receivers (Easterling & Smith), but because the ball is late, and because Bert can't make a move, he only gets 5 and not 20.
- Fs 3-10 at Fs34 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Smith, R.. Rolling pocket again. Fisher doesn't trust this oline to pass protect. If he trusted the oline at all this would have been a dropback. Ponder throws a decent ball considering he's on the run but the defense plays it well and pushes Smith OOB.
- Fs 4-10 at Fs34 Powell, S. punt 66 yards to the VA0, touchback. Drive: 6 plays, 14 yards, TOP 03:19 Excellent punt. Almost downed it.
Drive #6
- Fs 1-10 at Va35 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 02:06. Fs 1-10 at Va35 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Easterling, T.. Ponder great play-action on the read, pulls it, and tries to flip it to Taiwan Easterling but it is too high. Interesting new play. WVU/ Michigan style.
- Fs 2-10 at Va35 Ponder, C. pass complete to Reed, B. for 19 yards to the VA16, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds. Ponder finally gets good protection (only 3 men rush), and he throws a beautiful corner route to Bert Reed. Perfect play. Quality route by Reed against 2-deep. This is the smash against cover-2 I discussed in the preview!
- Fs 1-10 at Va16 Thomas, J. rush for 9 yards to the VA7 (Womack,T;Mosley,C). Nice veer reed play from off-set pistol. Good block by Orelus!
- Fs 2-1 at Va07 Thomas, J. rush for 1 yard to the VA6, 1ST DOWN FS (Dolce,J;Jenkins,N). Same play, poor read by Ponder (needed to keep it). Still got the first down.
- Fs 1-G at Va06 Thomas, J. rush for loss of 2 yards to the VA8 (Parr,Z;Walcott,A). Poor blocks by McMahon and Pryor here. Both physically beat and McMahon was slow off the ball.
- Fs 2-G at Va08 PENALTY VA holding 4 yards to the VA4, 1ST DOWN FS. Orelus badly beat inside. Just awful pass blocking and Ponder has no chance. Luckily the UVA DB held Haulstead.
- Fs 1-G at Va04 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Reliford, B.. Play-action to Reliford. Protection is fine. Ponder throws it tall for Relfiord and coverage is great (also holding here!). Beau must cut harder.
- Fs 2-G at Va04 Ponder, C. rush for loss of 3 yards to the VA7 (Carter,D;Greer,S). Read play again and Jermaine Thomas doesn't get his block so Ponder is DOA.
- Fs 3-G at Va07 Timeout Florida State, clock 00:20. Fs 3-G at Va07 PENALTY VA offside (Dolce,J) 4 yards to the VA3.
- Fs 3-G at Va03 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Haulstead, W.. SLUGGO. Very difficult catch. Good ball, good catch, but very good coverage. Just good plays from both teams. Perhaps Haulstead can run him off more.
- Fs 4-G at Va03 Hopkins, D. field goal attempt from 21 GOOD, clock 00:08.
- Florida State 27, Virginia 0 Drive: 9 plays, 32 yards, TOP 01:58
Drive #7
- Hinkebein,C kickoff 70 yards to the FS0, Joyner, L. return 12 yards to the FS12 (McCartin,C;Keys,R).
- Fs 1-10 at Fs12 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 15:00. Fs 1-10 at Fs12 Ponder, C. pass complete to Haulstead, W. for 6 yards to the FS18 (Dowling,R). Quick out to Haulstead. Note Fisher calling roll-outs and quick game because he doesn't trust the oline.
- Fs 2-4 at Fs18 Ponder, C. pass complete to Reed, B. for 13 yards to the FS31, 1ST DOWN FS (Walcott,A). More quick game on the bubble as Fisher doesn't trust the o-line. Great block by Rodney Smith and well thrown by Ponder.
- Fs 1-10 at Fs31 Ponder, C. rush for 4 yards to the FS35 (Johnson,C). Play-action, nobody open, Ponder has to take off. Protection was fine, though it was play-action.
- Fs 2-6 at Fs35 Ponder, C. pass complete to Reed, B. for loss of 2 yards to the FS33 (Minnifield,C). Bubble, poor block by Rodney Smith. Tackled.
- Fs 3-8 at Fs33 Ponder, C. sacked for loss of 10 yards to the FS23 (Johnson,C). Despite not trusting his oline, Fisher calls the deep ball. Easterling is coming wide open on this but FSU cannot handle the pressure at all and Ponder is sacked before he can even set his feet. McMahon has to take him. Cannot have two guys blocking one while a defender comes free.
- Fs 4-18 at Fs23 Powell, S. punt 61 yards to the VA16, Minnifield,C return 9 yards to the VA25 (Dellenbach, D.).
- Drive: 5 plays, 11 yards, TOP 03:02
Drive #8
- Hinkebein,C kickoff 65 yards to the FS5, Joyner, L. return 17 yards to the FS22 (Joseph,D).
- Fs 1-10 at Fs22 FLORIDA STATE drive start at 11:13. Fs 1-10 at Fs22 Thompson, C. rush for 2 yards to the FS24 (Greer,S;Conrath,M). Poor block by Hudson, late off the ball. Thompson has to cut around the guy in the backfield and should have gone outside. Smart run defense by UVA.
- Fs 2-8 at Fs24 Ponder, C. rush for 10 yards to the FS34, 1ST DOWN FS (Walcott,A). Gun 4-wide, Smash to the top, UVA illegally chucks Reliford more than 5-yards downfield and messes up the route. Ponder takes off.
- Fs 1-10 at Fs34 Thompson, C. rush for 4 yards to the FS38 (Taliaferro,A;Carter,D). Gun draw with Rodney pulling. Nice little play and good block by Rodney.
- Fs 2-6 at Fs38 Alexander, A.J. rush for 10 yards to the FS48, 1ST DOWN FS (Mosley,C). End around to Alexander, orbit look. Excellent open field block by Pryor.
- Fs 1-10 at Fs48 Ponder, C. pass complete to Smith, R. for 5 yards to the VA47 (Walcott,A). Sprint out zone flooder. Nice catch by Rodney.
- Fs 2-5 at Va47 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Reliford, B. (Mosley,C). Bootleg, UVA doesn't bite. Has Reliford open but cannot shake defender first. Dumb, dumb, dumb throw. Fisher chewed him for this bad on the sidelines and in the presser.
- Fs 3-5 at Va47 Ponder, C. pass incomplete to Reliford, B. Protection is poor here as Orelus gets beat on the outside because he doesn't move his feet and is really a guard playing tackle. Not a good ball, probably because he had to rush it. Reliford needs to catch this ball but he has awful body control. Falls down trying to reach back for it.
- Fs 4-5 at Va47 Powell, S. punt 40 yards to the VA7, out-of-bounds. Drive: 7 plays, 31 yards, TOP 02:42
After this was garbage time and I am not breaking that down.
If FSU can't slow down Miami's pass rush the Canes will roll the 'Noles. Miami's defense is truly elite and one of the best five in the country.

Even before you summed it up in the last sentence
you paint a bad picture about our pass protection for the Miami game. Shouldn’t we have more quality depth on the Oline 4 years into Jimbo recruiting for the O?
We are only three years into Jimbo recruiting full cycles
In 2008, Trickett and Jimbo first year we took six guys on the offensive line (Datko, Sanders, Spurlock, Sanderson, Snider and Faircloth) and five will end up starting. Faircloth and Snider are both part of the 2008 class but greyshirted. Trickett has two offensive linemen he likes off the bench Faircloth and Orelus. Stork is the future at LT IMO but clearly Trickett doesn’t think he has good right now as either Faircloth or Orelus. Snider injury hurt more then we originally thought. If Snider was healthy, we could have sat Spurlock for Wake and BYU to allow him to get healthy.
Five Quality Starters in one class is pretty amazing.

The Oline blocking is fine
It only breaks down when the other team sends extra men. In a lot of those plays in the video clip either Reliford or an RB makes an initial block and then releases on a pass route— and they are open. Ponder needs to recognize this and get the ball out to them quickly or if he’s not seeing them then maybe we should just keep them back for blocking only.
wrong. lots of 4 men rushes over last 4 gamea
Couldn’t be more incorrect. Wow

On the O-Line, who are the main underperformers. . .
And what difference will it make to have Datko back?
Looking for some optimism here.

Spurlock is struggling...
gets beat bad, in that video and other times. I’m unconvinced Datko will help a great deal. He will do better than Orelus as long as he isn’t in too much pain, arm is numb, etc. But there is nothing Datko can do to fix Spurlock. Maybe just have less complete breakdowns.Oline needs to improve three fold in a week for them not to get embarrassed in a marquee prime time game.

Datko is still better then what we have right now and it would allow Orelus to sub for Spurlock if the problems continue.

Anyone have any ideas as to what we might do to assist in the pass protection with miami?
Will we leave the backs in for pass protect, or work on plays that require little time in the pocket?
"Kill a fly with an axe"
I would guess both.
I think you’ll see more shotgun, with Lonnie and JT in to PP. Probably use some bubble screens to neutralize the rush.
I hope we see the WR screen a bit more this week. We attempted that a couple of times in the OU game and it had OU completely beaten…except for the fact that Willie ran the wrong way.

Backs need to pass protect inside-out
Better to be able to step INTO the pocket them scramble outside of it……and the biggest culprit right now is Spurlock, since he is not an edge player.
Additionally, inside-out pass pro allows for improvisational dumpoffs to the backs.
I hope Jimbo frustrates the F*** outta the Miami DL with quick-hitters.
Oderint Dum Metuant
agreed.
nothing worse for a passing game than having the pocket continually pushed in your face preventing any stepping into throws. well, unless you have the chicago bears tackles and you let DE run free and clear into a qb. I believe that is also a bad thing.
QB needs how much time
High school coach used to tell us qb has 3 seconds, I haven’t went back and counted, but Ponder gets that IMO. IMO, the problem is that Fisher is impatient and wants to go deep, you have to have more than 3 seconds to go deep with some degree of success. If you set up the short passing and get rid of the ball within 3 seconds, the defense has to abandon the all out rush and then you get more than 3 seconds. However, if you keep trying to go deep, then you get the all out pass rush. You can blame the OL for the pass on injuries, but the injuries would affect the run game also and the run game has been doing well.

Jimbo likes to take what the defense gives him. If the safeties play deep he doesn't traditionally throw deep.

I believe Jimbo is
50% Italian, 50% Jewish, and 50% Mexican
Fisher isn't obsessed with going deep
and you need more than 3 seconds. That is enough time for a three step drop and quick release. No high quality defense is going to give you that every play. Instead they will jam everyone at the LoS and you are screwed if they can’t beat the jam.
Run blocking is also easier to pick up than pass blocking which is why two years ago our line was so good at run block but Ponder was running for his life every time he dropped back.

I wouldn't flip out about this just yet
I think we were working on things…testing the fences. We know we can do some things well, but if we’re clearly destroing teams, it makes sense that we would work on what we don’t do well and find new things that we can use.
Obviously, if we have problems at Miami then we can start the panic talk. Look for us to do what we did in the past, which is take what the defense gives us. In Miami’s case, I assume this will be quite a bit.
Even if we lose to Miami
it’s not a big deal unless we play terribly. If our offense performs well, and Jacory has the game of his life throwing to receivers making circus catches, well then…oh well. It wasn’t FSU’s day.

As I noted..
fisher went to pretty much all short stuff later in the game.
Injuries equally affecting run game? Disagree. Why would you assume that.

Yeah, I actually think running a bit more could be a key to helping the pass blocking net week.
This is assuming that we can run the ball as well against Miami which is a HUGE assumption.

From fist glance
It seems as though they are having a hard time pick up the blitz and stunt packages. It seems as though the lack of practice before the season is really coming back to bite us now. I hope they can get this fixed before this weekend. Other than that it looks as though the Right tacklem (Henry ?) is not ready for Prime time, which we kinda knew already.
Definitely looks like stunts between Spurlock and McMahon are a big issue.
Also looks like Thompson can’t block to save his life. Some of those plays in that clip aren’t what I’d call poor pass blocking and several are Thompson looking like junk, which also isn’t on the OL. Won’t blame Orelus because the dude’s green as hell, but those other 3…

Meant to say that’s a really good point Harper. Orelus may get burned every so often, but if he’s truly playing out of position as a freshman, and he IS effective on some plays speaks volumes for his abilities.

Oh, I don't doubt that...
If you look at both times he got burned it was because he had to get out and get set on a Defensive end, and got too far forward, swim move and it was all over. Not that much movement at Guard. There is a reason that Tackles make themost $$ in the NFL along the line.

For instance, let’s take MIAMI, who had the top OL recruit in the nation fall into a Cane jersey. When you get THAT type of luck, you can afford some bad luck.
FSU can’t right now. Years of poor recruiting + attrition in the trenches are still plaguing this staff, which hasn’t had the luxury of building depth like the big dawgs have.

Run blocking was a major problem
when I was in school. From 2003 – 2007 we had 3 NFL backs (G. Jones, L. Washington, L. Booker) and I think I saw somewhere that we were ranked in the 100’s in rushing yards over that time span. Jeff Bowden + Poor Running Blocking.

Very satisfied with Orleus run-blocking ability
Keeps his feet moving. Not sure if he’ll ever have the feet to play at one of the tackle spots, but could be an excellent guard or center. This is a kid who has really bought into Trickett’s system. The pass-protection will come. Heck, he’s probably already smarter than Spurlock.

Too aggresive of an inside step at 0:38
People don’t realize that pass protection is a veritable game in of itself between OL and DL. You both make initial moves off the ball, and if you overreach on a step as an OL, a good speed rush will force you to open your hips.
Spurlock, as the rule with any lineman, always has inside responsibility on pass pro – that is, you never get beat across your face. He’s just overagressive (surprise) in his step inside, guy goes outside, he opens the gate. Fortunately he has a back to help seal the outside.
Note in the same clip that Orleus takes a very nice angle against the DE, who started from a very wide angle. Keeps his shoulders over top his hips and stays balanced. He is missing the punch, however. Every good tackle (and lineman, for that matter) has one offensive weapon – the punch. Tony Boselli made a career out of a one-handed club that acted like a mace against opposing DEs. The punch stuns the defender and takes the bull rush component away from the DE and makes it a battle of hand-position and staying in-between the defender and QB for the lineman. This, when successful, buys an extra second or so for the QB. You don’t have to win the battle at tackle a la Boselli – you just need to keep the bastard busy.

One of the issues that I see with Sanders, in particular
He’s leaned over, needs his back vertical. Causes his balance to be bad, succeptable to being pulled foward.
I still think that on the left side, the footwork needs a LOT of work and that includes Datko. I had questioned why he was not using the left handed stance and the shoulder problem explains it, I think.
Collectively, there’s not the wallop in the lines’ punch right, agreed. Tackles are too quick to turn, giving the soft shoulder. If they’re going to turn, they simply must run the ends deeper, behind the QB. But I hate that. I’d rather just stone him in place…..not that it’s that easy…but.
Datko can't need that much work in Pass Pro. His performance last year against elite competition at less then ideal weight was pretty amazing.

contact within 5 yards and can be past only if QB is outside of pocket. That is the case for NFL. NCAA is much more vague about it.

Typically college refs call defensive holding if the ball isn't in the air.
It’s either that or PI; no illegal contact.
I think this is right,
when a WR’s route is obstructed before ball is thrown it is usually flagged as defensive holding. Unless you are Joe Hadden, then its all good.

NCAA doesnt have this problem due the unbalanced team structure and relative amateur nature of college sports.

OL hasnt been this messy in a while
I think for 1, it could be a bad game, Orleus got beat a couple times, but not like the WF game and looks to me definitely improving out of position. Perhaps can give some quality reps if Datko needs to come out (assuming he shows up).
2, (and i think its a little of both) UVA is the best D we played so far. Good Ds make your O look not so good. I think that was a factor as well. UVA line just came out and did some things better/differently then we had seen previous and our OL had some trouble with it. Hopefully it can be broken down in the film room and adjusted, cause I know Miami will see where we fell apart.
Finally just as a general comment about the game, how many times did we hear about the UVA secondary? Its a pretty good one with two really good players, they had some nice coverages throughout the game, but in general I think Ponder/Fisher did a good job at mitigating UVA’s strength.
"…You can't get enough Lonnie Pryors on your football team." -Eddie Gran
Uva had a good effort
And seem to be best at blitzing. We had a lot of different guys taking turns missing blocks. Miami will look different as they will have more talent with their front four, and Datko is key for his technique against the speed rush. The backs are going to have to pick up blitzers, Ponder is going to need to be accurate with more defenders in coverage and he is going to need to scramble again.
Does anyone just use timeouts anymore, or are they all "burned"?
Does anyone know why Datko is so special against the Pass?
Is it his feet? Does he just get a good knee bend? I know the guy is a pure fighter but physically he had to be less then ideal in both size and strength.

Weak Upper Body (comparitively) but great technique in terms of footwork and staying in front of his defender.

Balance, keeps his feet under his upper body, gets good angles (i.e., good at keeping himself directly between rusher and QB and keeping his body and shoulders square to the defender)

I think we will see a nice jump in the coming years
Trickett will play a guy who might get physcially beat, but is consistent and has down the mental part (in that he is like jimbo) but Trickett’s own OL style is definitely more appropriate for a zone-spread offense (not necessarily what Jimbo comes from).
In the last few years youve seen these two great coaches have to mesh their conflicting styles a little bit (at the beginning of each season Jimbo likes to play under center do some between the tackle power plays that inevitably work less well than expected/ later you see FSU have much more success on shotgun option and zone read plays that are reminiscent of UWV) .
But since Jimbo took over, you can see as well his influence in the players that Trickett has recruited. Much larger guys specifically. There are a few reasons for this, 1, Jimbo now has the ability to dictate recruiting more than before, the last few years he could make suggestions yes. but now he is the boss; 2, Trickett is in a position to bring in guys that he can coach up a little longer before they get serious playing time, so less worry about getting a kid who Needs to get the system down immediately
"…You can't get enough Lonnie Pryors on your football team." -Eddie Gran
Didn't having such a small line over the last three years have more do with having to play guys way to early.
If Trickett is able to use a traditional linemen cycle only Hudson and McMahon would be playing this year. I don’t believe Trickett and Jimbo were ever not on the same page as far as the size of the linemen. It was clearly more important to them to have linemen that could get to the next level then road grade. I believe our line will continue to get bigger over the next several years but they will always be athletic enough to get to the next level. I know a former NFL linemen who came to school as Freshmen at 245 and played OT in the league for ten years.
FSU football is the new case study for the outliers phenomon
Why would only Hudson and McMahon play this year in a "traditional" cycle?
You are not going to have 5 seniors starting on the OL every year. Two seniors, two juniors and a freshman/sophomore is as good of a line as you can expect from year to year. Size is still an issue on the line this year imo and we are an upperclassmen dominated line.

not the most physically imposing. Thats why (I think) we have problems in the power running game and dominating the LoS. Others disagree. but we will always have problems pushing the line and should rely on misdirection and speed when we need to gain short yardage.

I think you are exactly right there and yes the lineman are getting bigger. Trickett can go either way. He was coaching some monsters at Auburn and he is well versed in the power game also. It is just a matter of what Jimbo wants. Trickett coached some at LSU also.
People seem to forget when Fisher and Trickett came aboard, we just no lineman worth speaking of and they were grabbing any lineman they could get their hands on as long as they seemed to be football players and they could sign them on the dotted line. One guy Grossman Trickett grabbed from New Jersey went home the first week. The lineman Trickett is signing now seem to stick around other Phillips.
Trickett also got rid of that lineman from Georgia who had a scholarship Chris Little because he knew he couldn’t play. He didn’t honor the scholarship and told him to go somewhere else. I think he went to Georgia and they got rid of him too.

I would just put a large chunk of that 97% on Ponder.
MiNDSET? SWAG-ER-ISM!!!

"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."
"Correct, Sir Trick."
We still ahvent max protected much at all..
What’s the viability of running running running. then doing the screens and intermediate passes.. Then when we need to throw deep leaving a TE and and RB and doing 3 receiver routes? I think it could actually get us through this game if our D plays wel.

Here is a Virginia take on the game

We are "process oriented" as opposed to "results oriented." says Fisher.
The process is real, make no mistake, it gets stronger and stronger day by day, it is unstoppable!
It's just the AP article
The ubiquitousness of AP (and dearth of independent reporting) is one thing that the web’s made unpleasantly apparent.
I mean can’t they find something else to say. It’s a website dedicated to Cav sports and they can’t write their own game recap.
It makes you appreciate TN.
Least original thought I've had in a while:
We’re going to have to run the ball north and south and make great play action fakes to keep Miami’s line out of Ponder’s lap. Perhaps we’ll see some more 3 man routes in this game with backs and TEs staying in to protect?
Its all in the game.
I hope they do max protect some...we have still only kept one guy back to protect so far.

Glad our bye-week will be coming up soon.
Cause we’re gonna need it after this weekend game, even though we have a game(BC) before the bye.
FEAR THE SPEAR!!!!!!!!!
From watching the ND/BC game last week
BC may be considered a bye week, sheesh they were terrible. The one game that I really wanted them to win Badly and they blow it badly.
