FSU vs Gardner-Webb: Preview

PrintFSU (2-0) takes on Gardner-Webb (2-0) tonight at 7:00pm. This is the second home game for the Seminoles who are coming off a convincing win against UNC Greensboro. Last game was a bounce back game for both Michael Snaer and Chris Singleton. Snaer managed to replicate his defensive intensity on the offensive end with 16 points on only 9 shot attempts and Singleton earned a triple-double with 22 points 11 rebounds 10 steals to go along with 4 blocks and 6 assists. FSU needs both Singleton and Snaer to have great years in order to meet the expectations placed on this season.
Gardner-Webb went 8-21 last year after starting 3-0. I don't expect this to be much of a game as their talent level and height is comparable to both teams FSU has already faced this year. Gardner-Webb counts on SG Jonathan Moore and SF Stefon Johnson for the majority of their scoring. FSU's defense should be able to shut them down.
Even if FSU struggles to put Gardner-Webb away early remember that these games are essentially scrimmages and the coaches treat them that way. Any success or failure can not be projected on the rest of the year. Its about two weeks before the first "real" game begins, Sunday Nov 28th against #9 UF.

Alot more assists this year
I really like the speed we played UNCG at. The ball was moving the whole time and we were taking decent shots for once. After watching the U last night, I don’t think they’re a factor this year reminded me alotta of the team we had last year. Scott and fat Reggie will be tough tho.
It's early
and there have been some surprises by somebody needs to tell Dulkys the season has started….lol.
My sample size is 1 this year (home vs. UNF)
But this team looks no smarter offensively than it did last year. I see no change in offensive IQ. I see great individual talents. But I’m coming to the conclusion we will never see a Duke or UNC team fielded by Coach Ham. Talent-level, yes. (Mentally? Eh). Situational smart basketball? No.

I really don’t think they’re all that “talented” in terms of athletes, they just have guys that are good for what K wants. Hamilton isn’t as great of a recruiter as everyone wants to claim, imo.

So there’s zero argument that we’ve had their talent.
Not at all a fair comparison.
This is his 8th or 9th year. If you want to go off his past 4 or 5 years, that’s fine. But those first few years the program he inherited was awful.

Yes, that's precisely it.
Someone else said we had as much talent as UNC and Duke, not me. So know who the hell you’re actually talking to. I said “maybe” as much as Duke if you are talking from an athletic standpoint but that K gets players that can execute what he wants how he wants.

but Duke has much better basketball players. They have guys with very high basketball IQs that can shoot the lights out.

We do recruit NC.
Ian Miller in 2010. Terry Whisnant in 2011. I think we should recruit the best players we can get regardless of where they are from.

I agree.
I was just thinking along the lines that alot of schools recruit FL for football talent being that football is king here, why not recruit the bball crazy states for that talent. I grew up in IN, it’s like a different world. Football is just something to do before basketball season starts.

In the last 5 drafts Duke has had 3 lottery picks,
we’ve had 1. So I’m not getting your point about “less athletic.” What does that mean in basketball terms? Do our guys have a better vertical?
As to coaching, are you really suggesting that Ham isn’t as good as the guy is a lock top-5 coach of all time?
great point - we're playing basketball, not fielding a track team...
duke and unc basically alternate having the #1 class in the nation – and they have the luxury of basically recruiting the best player at whatever position of need they happen to have at the moment..
our recruiting is good, and much better in recent years – but still not even on the plane as the big boys…

Not much to base it off of in this game yet, but Loucks comes in and our offense starts to struggle and Loucks with 3 quick to's in only a handful of minutes.

Facilities are nice, indeed
especially the expansion of their football stadium, quite loud there now. I just hate corporate sponsorship rearing its ugly head in college athletics. Just can’t imagine being a student and screaming at opposing teams “Welcome to the YUM! Center!”
Like my UCF friends talking about “BHN Stadium.” Great stadium, just hate the corporate names. In all sports really (O-rena now the Amway Arena, so disappointing), but especially college sports.
Can't say I'd care too much if we played in the Publix Supermarket's Doak Campbell Stadium if we raked in a few extra million a year.

Always tough to overcome the UNC/Duke favoritism, but geeze, if he keeps putting up numbers like this....
AND we manage to finish in the top 3, I’d say he’d have to be a favorite.
The biggest threat would be Duke or UNC putting together a ridiculous pre-tournament season — then they’ll be looking to award the perceived cog that makes them go, a la Ty Lawson over Toney Douglas a couple years ago.
