Florida Hires Will Muschamp As Head Coach

Stay connected for news and updates

The state of Florida is now ruled by two former Nick Saban coordinators--Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, and Florida's Will Muschamp.  The Associated Press and Florida Times Union newspaper in Jacksonville reported Saturday night that Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has accepted an offer to become Florida's head football coach.

We will have more on this story as it develops.  Muschamp was the head coach in waiting at Texas.  Muschamp is a great defensive coach and an excellent hire.  Florida State, Tennessee, and Florida all now have former Saban assistants as head coaches.  There's no doubt Muschamp wanted to get out from under Mack Brown's lackadaisical coaching style and implement his own structured approach, just as Fisher implemented when FSU elected not to renew Bobby Bowden's contract.

Who he hires to fill out his staff, however will be very important and will likely determine how successful he is as a head coach.  There is no guarantee that he will be successful, but he has a similar pedigree to FSU coach Jimbo Fisher.  Get ready for some big showdowns between FSU & UF.

"We'll get after each other. He'll do a great job," said Florida State HC Jimbo Fisher. Fisher and Muschamp own a beach house together in Florida.

Muschamp cannot recruit for the Gators until after the Bowl Game. Unless they fire Urban now he has to watch from afar.

Now FSU fans turn their eyes to the South....

Because Miami's hire is arguably more important than UF's hire.

I'll say that again.

Miami's hire is arguably more important than UF's hire.

Why?  Simple.  In  a game of finite resources like recruiting, UF is going to get theirs.  But Miami might not.  And if Miami doesn't it benefits FSU way more than it does UF.  There is enough talent each year to support two top-10 teams, but not three.

And with that, I will tell you that the Miami Herald is speculating that Marc Trestman is the likely choice for Miami.  That's not official yet, but if it happens, it is an enormous white flag.

UF adding Muschamp while Miami grabs Trestman is a net win for the Noles in my opinion.
