Urban Meyer will step down at 6PM as head coach of the Florida Gators.
Meyer, 46, informed Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley over the weekend that he was contemplating resigning and the two finalized the plan Tuesday. Meyer told the Gators of his decision during a team meeting earlier this afternoon. UF has scheduled a press conference for 6 p.m. at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium where Meyer and Foley will address the media.Full Link
Twitter account Gator Updates reported the story, and it was echoed by national radio host Todd Wright. Long-time state of Florida reporter Brett McMurphy is also reporting the story. The Rivals.com Gator site confirms as well. Gainesville Sun confirms. Sports Illustrated confirms.
Analysis: this is bad for FSU. Florida is likely to grab Dan Mullen and his excellent staff at Mississippi State, which is a much better group than what UF had with Meyer and co in 2010. Bob Stoops will also be a strong candidate. He has great ties to UF and believes in Spurrier's "never want to be at one place for 10+ years" line.
In the short term, FSU may be able to poach a recruit or two, but there are few recruits who are deciding between FSU & UF at this time. The most prominent ones are WR Kelvin Benjamin, DT Timmy Jernigan, DB Pop Saunders, DB Nick Waisome, and now comes word about this guy too:
RT @jcshurburtt: Four-star OT Josue Matias (Union City, NJ) will visit FSU officially on Dec. 17. Won't visit UF now.
There are, however, some UF recruits who will choose other schools, and some current UF players who will transfer.
How do the 2010 recruits feel? Remember how Urban told all the recruits he would be there for their whole careers after he retired the first time:
2010 UF recruit Matt Elam: "I talked to Urban last night. We were talking about our relationship basically and he told me to have trust ... to have trust in him and he asked me a word that really touched me. He said, 'Do you know what faith means?' and he told me the definition. It really touched me a lot. It really touched me so my decision might change.' - Matt Elam after Urban's first retirement.
We posted this after the FSU 31-7 victory over the Gators:
"He quit. Jimbo, your boy quit."
