Myron Rolle- Draft Projection Question from Steelers Fan
Hello Seminoles Fans! I'm coming to you from the heart of Steelers Nation with a question about one of FSU's many talented alums. The person of which I speak is none other than Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle. The Steelers failed to reach the playoffs in the 2009 season due to a large number of reasons, most of which will not be discussed here. However, the Steelers' most pressing weakness last year was their secondary. Once Troy got hurt, we were screwed. Our pass D gave away late leads against Chicago, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Baltimore, and Oakland, five of our seven losses(The other two were caused by a horrible offensive effort). Thus, most people have the Steelers going for a DB with the eighteenth selection of the first round. However, this poses some problems for the Black and Gold. The top safety who would be available at 18 is Earl Thomas, who has not had much experience compared to other high draft picks and has significant bust potential. There is only one CB with a first round grade, Joe Haden of Florida. He may not be available when the Steelers pick, and the draft's other CBs are bad value at that slot. That brings me to Rolle. Do you think that he would be available halfway through the second round? Do you think he is worth a mid-first round draft choice? Is he a safe choice? Thank you for your help in this matter; hopefully I will be able to glean a ton of info to share back at Behind the Steel Curtain.
P.S.- Your 200-word minimum idea for fanposts is very interesting.

This is just my opinion:
1) Mid First Round would be a reach for Rolle. I’m guessing he is going to go late second to mid-third.
2) Rolle played the “Rover” position in Mickey Andrews defense, which put him in a lot of situations where he was stopping the run as the 4th linebacker. This hurt his production in terms of interceptions, although I personally thought his hands were a bit stone-like in the few chances he had to come up with picks.
3) As long as Rolle is committed to playing football 100%, I see him as having very low bust potential. I don’t see him as a ballhawk though, so he is not going to be the guy who eventually replaces TP.
Thanks!
Rolle would not replace Polamalu(he is only 29), he would replace Clark, our other safety. Clark has had very few INTs in his time here, so poor hands are not an issue. If Rolle is as smart and dedicated as I think he is, he should be a fine starter next to Troy.

first round is to high
I agree with fsu44 on this one. He also has a huge up side, no off the field problems, can learn a defenses quick, and with the right coaches and scheme he could be a solid db in the nfl. I’m a bucs fans and I want him on my team. Hopes that helps you out.
I hope the bucs grab him with there early pick in the 3rd and pass on berry in the 1st round. I think he could be the steal of the draft.

It does, thank you for your input.
If he is solid then that’s all we need.

I have to agree with FSU44
1st round is a bit of reach but Patrick Robinson will be there, although I still think 18 would be high for him to go as well. Rolle offers so great upside, and I think he will land in the 3rd or possibly the second depending on how he does at the combine. In ethier of those rounds your getting a steal for someone who was projected last year as a first rounder. Again agreeing with FSU44 he played a specific position in our system that didnt let him totally shine in pass coverage. He is a very low risk vs high reward guy with a third round pick. No character issues what so ever and his football IQ should be through the roof.
Great, thanks!
Hopefully the Steelers make a play for him in the second round at 50, or maybe trade down from there or trade up from 82(mid third).

solid 3rd or 4th rd pick
I will reiterate what others have said and add my personal biases.
positives: Obviously, very smart kid and “elite” citizen in representing your team. great tackler. won’t miss a tackle for you. will understand your scheme and always be in the right position and will help out in getting the other guys in the right place for you.
negatives: not elite athlete or “elite” football instincts, so will not be a playmaker for you in any sense of the word. As noted, poor hands and gets no break on the ball in man or zone, so a liability in coverage. will even struggle against the top TEs (ie Dallas Clark).
prognosis: never starts but intangibles and smarts (as opposed to instincts) keep him in the league until he gets bored and pursues other interests (is that kind of kid). special teams standout and very solid in certain packages in that he will never bust an assignment for you, but don’t expect him to come up w/ that game clinching pick
BTW
I meant “until he gets bored and pursues other interests” as a compliment to him, not in the sense that he is a slacker by any means
He reminds me slightly of Lawrence Timmons (but smarter) coming out of FSU
When LT was at FSU, he was playing behind some excellent LBs (ie. Ernie Sims) and didn’t start till his Sr year. He had a ton of talent, but hadn’t gotten a ton of highlights in FSU’s defense. Myron is a pedigree guy (remember Samari Rolle?) who, if he’s focused on football, will be another coach on the field, as well as a solid player. If you play him next to Troy, you have two players with the potential to take a guy’s head off. With elite CBs next to him, I think Myron wouldn’t have to worry so much about his pass coverage issues. He’ll give you DC some great opportunities to scheme in new ways. While at FSU, Myron’s biggest football-related issue was a lack of focus. He was taking FSU’s hardest undergraduate classes and doing lab research (biochemistry I think?). He admitted that he never put enough focus into football. It’s scary to think what could happen if he did that. Don’t expect him in the league for more than 5 years though. I foresee a short career with a future in bigger things.
That's an interesting take
It would suck if we drafted only to see him become a biochemist a few years later.

Not only will Rolle be there in the middle of the second...
I’d wager he’d be there in the middle of the 4th. He just has too many question marks to be taken in the first 3 rounds. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him drop to the 5th or lower even. Not arguing that he has great upside, and you can’t get a better character guy, but there are just too many question marks.
Hardly going to be a late 3rd rounder
there are questions not too unlike what surrounded Charlie Ward in the 1994 draft – Ward went untaken in part due to the uncertainity of what he’d do if he were also drafted in the NBA as well as the possibility that he’d quit football to try the NBA if he initially went to the NBA.
In Rolle’s case, he is also “hurt” by the situation of having other options. After 3 or 4 seasons, he could decide it was time to go to medical school to pursue his dreams of being a neurosurgeon. That risk right there drops him a round or two. He may well be a 3rd round talent, but he’ll drop to the fourth or fifth round due to the perceived risk of a high chance of cutting his career short to pursue education.
And if he slips to the fifth round, he could rapidly slip out of the draft. If he is still on the board in the fifth, there may be the perception that he may decide to skip the NFL all together given his draft status and other options.

You may be suprised on day 2 of the draft
I don’t argue with your logic as I could see it playing out that way but I’m hearing a few teams are seriously considering taking him late 3rd. Of course that’s all pre-combine talk.

The ESPN article told me all I wanted to know about Myron
The fact in his freshman year he became emotional and had to talk with Mickey about a waitress he identified with who was beaten down in life, speaks volumes. It suggests he is a great soul in that he can feel empathy for and merge with the feelings of the down trodden man or woman.
I am high on Myron but not so much on Oxford and the elite who teach there. They can parrot Descartes to Plato, entities I have extreme doubt they do not understand themselves.
It is one thing to memorize the quotes of the great minds, but another to put them into practice. The “United Kingdom” has schooled the people responsible for invading most nations on earth with very little accomplished in the process other than death and destruction. Bill Clinton is an excellent example.
A Rhodes Scholarship is a gateway to success and at the same time a great opportunity for the elite to study you also and see if you fit their agenda. I hope Myron just continues to be Myron and I wish him well with his clinic in the Bahamas.

Slightly off-topic.
Only speaking from my take on economics and a little poli sci, having studied in England (Nottingham School of Economics) for graduate school, but Oxford kids are kind of stupid. They don’t teach them to think about the subject properly. You’re basically forking over thousands for the Oxford name.
Given the choice between Oxford and FSU, it’s not even close. FSU crushes it. So forget about any comparison between Oxford and the Ivy League or the Dukes/UNCs of the world. Oxford isn’t fit to shine their shoes.
I understand why Myron went for the Rhodes Scholarship. It was a great opportunity, and he was right to take it, even if only to add to his resume. But British universities don’t stack up even against middle-of-the-pack American schools.
They’ve got better K-12 education, but there’s a reason most of the highly-regarded academics are Americans. Our unis are unrivaled.

That is an excellent observation
It is also good to hear it from someone who has been there and done that.

Rolle
What I find really fascinating is the constant questioning of Rolles commitment to playing in the NFL while players with really questionable pasts get a free pass? It really appears that GM’s and coaches are intimidated by the guys intelligence and are grasping at straws trying to find a reason to avoid taking him.
John Lynch ran a 4.68 at the combine and probably was even slower yet suddenly Rolle is a questionable choice for the NFL? I normally don’t get into predictions but I believe the NFL Team that selects Rolle is getting a steal in the draft and a player that will dedicate himself to the game like an ALL PRO.
Oh well the same GM’s allowed Tom Brady to last until the 6th round. LOL Doesn’t everyone consider the Pats geniuses because they picked Brady? JMO but they look more like a blind sow stumbling on an acorn. Again JMO but with such choices you have to wonder how good the NFL is at evaluating talent.
