FSU's Ponder, Manuel, and Hopkins Earn ACC All-Academic Football Team Honors
A trio of Florida State players, including quarterbacks Christian Ponder and EJ Manuel, and kicker Dustin Hopkins, have been selected to the 42-member All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic football team.
Leading the ACC All-Academic team were Florida State redshirt junior quarterback Christian Ponder (Colleyville, Tex.), who led the ACC in total offense at 321.8 yards per game - the sixth-best season average in league history - and earned honorable mention All-ACC honors despite missing the final four games of the season with a shoulder injury. A repeat selection to the team, he is in the process of completing his MBA this semester, and boasts a 3.659 career GPA entering his final season of athletic eligibility. Ponder earned his undergraduate degree in finance in 2 ½ years.
Manuel, who led the Seminoles to a 3-1 record as Ponder's replacement in the starting lineup, earned a 3.625 GPA in the fall of his redshirt freshman season as a communications major. He was the MVP of FSU's Gator Bowl victory over West Virginia and earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors after guiding the Seminoles past Wake Forest in his first career start.
Ponder and Manuel comprised two-thirds of the ACC quarterbacks selected to the team, joining NC State's Russell Wilson.
Hopkins, a freshman kicker and communications major, posted a 4.00 GPA in his first semester at Florida State. On the field, Hopkins tied for second in the ACC among kickers by averaging 7.5 points per game while leading the league in touchbacks and boasting the longest field goal. Hopkins' 97 points not only led the Seminoles in scoring, but was the highest output by a freshman kicker in Bobby Bowden's 34 seasons as FSU's head coach.
A total of eight Seminoles were nominated by Florida State for All-ACC Academic honors after meeting both the academic and game participation requirements, including: Zach Aronson, Jajuan Harley, Lonnie Pryor, Rodney Smith and Vincent Za
To be eligible for consideration, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
FSU has two of the only eleven ACC All-Academic Football team players in ACC history to be selected 4-times. They are Daryl Bush (1994-97) and Chris Hope (1998-2001).
Duke led all ACC schools with 11 selections, followed by Clemson with seven; Virginia Tech and Boston College with 4 each; and Florida State, NC State and Maryland with three each.

congrats to those guys
I’m not sure if having a smart kicker is a good thing. I feel like it might be better if he was pretty slow, he might not worry about missing kicks as much that way.
/somewhat joking statement
Speak softly, and carry a big Spear
And then at the other end of the spectrum, you have Jano, not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but one who is now a multi-millionaire. Crazy.

It's Colleyville, not Coffeville.
correction noted in subject line

OH, OK, now I see what you are talking about with Colleyville. I thought it was a Jame Coley reference.
In my defense, I cut and pasted that from the ACC website, as you can see for yourself. So no es mi culpa.

That's because the only ones left for us to recruit are the bottom 99% of the bottom 99%. The rest are spoken for.

I got a text alert about this from that other service...
it was 5 minutes before a Finance test in a class I have w/ EJ and Jacobbi, almost jumped up to go sit by EJ!
I was just going to comment that it appears Jimbo likes them smart. Even though he was not techically responsible for Ponder, I will choose to think it is all Jimbo.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
Well...
Jimbo DID choose to start Ponder 2 years ago over a RS SR (starter for most of the three previous years). So, yeah, I think you can credit Jimbo for Ponder.
Great for them and I'm glad they were recognized
I just don’t really like this stuff, though. I think that great students in athletics should definitely be celebrated and given notoriety, I’m just not sure about this process. Seems ambiguous at best. But again, congrats to Christian, EJ, and Dustin.

I don't know DK. It seems pretty cut and dry, 3.0 and 3.0. Although as a self proclaimed genius, I find 3.0 a little on the low side.
Wake with one though, is a bit of a shocker to me.

I see it kind of like a strength of schedule issue
You have to take into account the kind of classes the players are taking. I don’t want anybody to tell me that Timmy’s 3.5 in his community service major is equivalent to Ponder’s 3.5 undergrad business major (and then MBA). Christian had to do a lot more to get there. I feel like the whole thing opens itself up to a lot of scrutiny about classes and programs.

Gotcha DK.
BTW, I took a wine appreciation class as an elective during my time at FSU offered by the Hospitality School. True story. We learned all about wines and champagnes and had tastings.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
They have that up in Charlottesville as well
Which I know is mind blowing, right? I have yet to confirm whether there exists a cheese sampling class, though.

That's at UNC
Hence the wine and cheese crowd.

I've only ever heard rumors of this wine class
I think I met one person in my time at FSU that actually was able to take that course. Just impossible to find in the course look up.
As for this ACC All-Academic honors, I agree with the thought process that it’s a bit sketchy. There were a couple of kids listed that were “Undecided” majors. I was an Undecided major for a year, and maintaining a 3.0 is hardly tough when you’re taking basic computer literacy or online oceanography. I understand that to be fair, you probably can’t differentiate between upperclassmen and lower classmen in a list like this, but it all seems more like an effort just to push the “student” part of “student-athlete” for these conferences.
