Christian Ponder Pre-Spring Press Conference Thoughts & Recap
Thanks to Andrew Carter at the Sentinel's Chopping Block and NoleInsider.com for posting the videos. Here's part one:
In case you are unable to watch, Ponder said that it felt good to throw the ball for the first time in a week. He talked about his rehabilitation, which involves three hours daily in the training room. Ponder's surgery was done by the famous Birmingham surgeon, Dr. James Andrews. He is lifting light weights and is now back throwing the college-sized football. Ponder said he is not yet throwing routes, but is throwing to stationary trainers.
Ponder said that his main goal for the Spring is to get his timing back. He was way ahead of schedule with his recovery, but for safety reasons the trainers and doctors slowed him down. He hopes to play in the Spring game, but understands that his rehab is highly structured.
Ponder said that he has been studying the offense a bunch and he has really begun to get inside the offense by teaching Will Secord and Clint Trickett (the two freshmen quarterbacks). And he has gained more perspective as a leader by stepping back.
Ponder is competing in almost all of the 4th quarter drills and Ponder says that they are very difficult. He says the players are able to work better now that the drills are not at 5 AM. He said the drills are more football-specific and you can see the changes in the guys after only a few weeks.
Ponder said Jeff Luc is a freak (some people I talked to thought he was a pro player returning to check in on his old program). Ponder said that Luc is working really hard to get on the field.
In part two, and part three Ponder said that he likes new coach Craig, the new QB coach. Said Craig has been under Fisher (and Saban) before. He said his program is the same one done by Sam Bradford, who had a very similar surgery October 28th. Bradford is expected to throw without limitation during his March 25th pro day. Ponder had his surgery 3 weeks later than Bradford.
Ponder said that Fisher still seems like himself since he took over but is holding people accountable both on and off the field. Ponder said that the changes under new strength coach Vic Viloria are huge and the workouts are intense. He said the massively increased training staff brings a ton of enthusiasm in the weight room.
Then Ponder discussed the nutrition thing. And this is huge. I first discussed this in How Will Jimbo Fisher Change Florida State. Fisher then confirmed it in his introductory press conference. FSU has always had a nutrition program. But the way it was administered rendered it totally ineffective. Ponder said that the entire menu had been overhauled and the staff had changed what the players need to eat. Ponder said the staff is doing a great job and people can already see the changes. Ponder Lamented the loss of honey-fried chicken (something Rick Trickett had complained about the team serving 3x in a week last season). The players are told exactly what to eat. They have it diagrammed out and they have 5 staffers watching what they eat. Players are separated by "weight gainers", "weight losers", and presumably (Ponder didn't say this last category) "weight maintainers". The players meet with the trainers and nutritionists who discuss the diet plans and any daily changes in the plans.
And then he joked around a bit more.

FSUn, good stuff. Anyone who doesn't like Ponder is not worth the time of day, IMO.
Aside from some of the things you already discussed, some of my favorites are;
A) on how If he hadn’t have been hurt he might have seriously considered entering the NFL Draft,
2) on how he plans to play on both sides of the ball (offense and defense) next season and his fathers advice re: Peyton Manning, and
D) on his future educational plans which could possibly include taking ballroom dancing or underwater basket weaving classes in the fall.
Not only a smart and great athlete, but also has a good personality. However, he should take a public speaking class to become aware and learn to stop his use of “aaahhh” in between sentences. But this being his only flaw, I can live with that.

Public speaking...
I coach the FSU competitive public speaking team and if anyone knows a way to get into contact with CP7 or someone in the department, I’d be glad to work with him. I worked with Alex Boston before the draft and have found many football players to be very interested in strengthening their public speaking skills.
I was unaware that fsu had a 'competitive speaking team'
its a little humorous sounding.
That’s cool that you offer your services for the athletes

Honey Fried Chicken
Wasn’t that the basis for the 2006 team motto?

So that explains it
They were bloated up on honey fried chicken.
I think Ponder would have went pretty high in the draft this year if healthy. Glad he is back though. He will probably make more money after this season.
" Fisher’s approach to building a winner is lifted from Saban’s playbook. Right down to the terminology such as becoming more "process oriented" as opposed to "results oriented."
" Nick and I are friends," he said. "That guy is one of the best football coaches I’ve ever been around. God knows he’s brilliant. … A lot of the things he believes are a lot of things I believe. We’re very similar!
The process begins!
There's a definite change in attitude in the training table.
Viloria and his boys are on these kids big time. The players aren’t too happy, which means you know it’s working, and the ineffectiveness of the previous staff’s (if you want to call it that) nutritional plan. You know who Viloria’s boys are. They’re the ones riding the players at the training table. I couldn’t pick out Stroud’s guys on campus for the life of me.
SCALP 'EM SEMINOLES!
Look here, I know as an Alabama student it's your duty to promote all things Bama,
but I think you meant to say “The famous Gulf Breeze surgeon, James Andrews.”
It is the same guy
He does the bulk of his surgeries in Birmingham. Everyone who is anyone goes to this guy for orthopedic surgery. He is the proverbial “bad ass” of ortho surgeons.
As much as I love the PCola love..
Dr Andrews is rarely in Gulf Breeze…although that facility is simply retarted awesome

What were they doing before?
He said the drills are more football-specific and you can see the changes in the guys after only a few weeks.
It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee
Can FSU students still eat at The Figg Player's Dining Room?
I was always amazed as a student eating with the players and seeing very little guidance on the part of the nutritional staff. I’d like to stop by there again for lunch and see what changes have been made.
Nutrition / Strength & Condition
Is the new emphasis on these areas limited to the football program?
Thanks for this FSUn
Ponder seems settled in and looking forward to the next year. Also loved the insight into the new program and the changes around campus. The first game of the year couldn’t come soon enough.
Striker: "Surely you can't be serious!" Rumack: "I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
From another interview with Brian Landman.
How different are things under new head coach, Jimbo Fisher?
"There’s been a big change. Everyone’s being held accountable. … Nutrition-wise for us, we basically have our meals picked out for us now. The whole cafeteria’s changed; we’re eating healthy. These fourth-quarter drills are different (than mat drills). The whole weight room’s different. A lot of small things like that have totally changed. The whole attitude has changed. Just having all these new fresh faces in, it’s a lot of different and I think it’s different in the sense that it’s being better. There’s a lot of excitement around this whole deal, so we’re excited.’’
How are the fourth-quarter drills different than the mat drills that had been the cornerstone of the off-season conditioning program for years?
"There’s a lot more running involved. They’re a lot more geared toward what we’ll do on the football field. A lot of drills that focus on the actual football aspect of it. It’s still difficult. The good thing is we’re not getting up a 5 in the morning, which I think is beneficial for us. You’re able to get more out of us at 3:30 in the afternoon than at 5 in the morning. The whole attitude’s great. I enjoy them a lot more than mat drills. It’s still difficult, it’s still hard, but I think it’s definitely better than mat drills.’’
How will you be different in 2010 after setting the bar pretty high last year?
"There’s always room for improvement. I can always do different things to make myself better – study more film every day. But right now for me, it’s just trying to get back on my feet. Getting comfortable again and working toward that spring ball date. It was kind of a unique opportunity getting hurt and kind of stepping back from certain things and stepping back from the program, kind of having an outside view in of everything that went on. There’s a lot of things we can do, a lot of leadership needs to be developed on this team. It’s those small things we can do to make this team better. Personally, it’s getting more comfortable. I’m already comfortable in the offense, it just gets down to perfection. That’s what I’ve got to strive for and make myself better.’’
You’re getting some buzz about the Heisman Trophy. Is that in your sights?
"That’s something I don’t focus on. I’d love to have that opportunity but for me, if I take care of what I need to on the football field, that aspect will take care of itself. It’s not something I’m working toward. I’m working to win football games. When that happens, all that other stuff will take care of itself.’’
What are the expectations for ’10?
"For us personally, we have high expectations for ourselves. Our goals are the same. We want to go out and win the ACC championship game and win a national championship game. Obviously that’s tough to do; it’s tough to win. We know that. That’s why we’re working hard starting now. Obviously to win a national championship, a lot of things have to come together. But for us, we’re doing everything we can to be prepared for that opportunity and we’ll see what happens.’’
He is looking forward to the start of spring practice on March 16, even though he knows he will be prudently limited in the drills.
"It definitely doesn’t feel normal yet,’’ Ponder said. "I trust the trainers. I’d love to play in the spring game (schedule for April 10). I don’t know if that’s a viable option, we’ll see what happens. That’s my goal right now to work toward that spring game.’’
