UPDATED WITH VIDEO PART 3
TN member "willdabeast" first posted a Fanshot of this interview with Mark Stoops which was filmed and posted by Andrew Carter at his Chopping Block, of Stoops' first meeting with the media since his hire in December. Thanks to AC for filming and sharing these videos.
Some of the topics he discussed include:
-How FSU will run a base 4-3 defense, but it will be very "multiple" and will feature many different looks and packages within the base defense. How we can expect a lot of variation between zone and man, and lots of different personnel groupings, depending on the game-plan for a given game. "Multiple" is a word he used multiple times during this interview.
-How the tradition of Florida State is what drew him to Tallahassee.
-How his crossing paths with Jimbo Fisher while recruiting lead to a relationship and friendship with Jimbo.
-How he will finally be able to evaluate the talent and personnel he will have here at FSU, starting with spring practice, which begins on March 16th.
-On how you must first start with the fundamentals to successfully install the base defense, which is the key to building a defense from the ground up, and why spring practice will be so important.
-And how he and his family have been getting acclimated to Tallahassee so far.
If you don't have the time to watch the 3-part, approximately 30 minute interview, click here and read AC's breakdown of this interview.

Fixed. We were posting this around the same time so I wanted to make sure you got credit for being first.

Very Concerned about Florida State Defensive Coordinator Mark Stoops.
He’s a red head.
I grew up with 4 red headed sisters.
It’s not a good thing, man. I’m just tellin’ ya…. :)
My values: I love my wife, admire my dog, and believe very deeply that Bobby Bowden and Paula Dean were separated at birth.
No.
Thankfully. : )

I agree. So far he has shown me nothing that makes me think he is the right man for the job.

+1
Our defense has done absolutely nothing so far this year

It's a good thing hair styles aren't a factor in winning games
because between him and Jimbo we’d be in trouble.
"Our defense has done absolutely nothing so far this year"
Doing nothing is actually an improvement over last year’s D, which instead tended to give up a big ass play every three or four plays.
?
1. there’s nothing he could possibly show since he’s been here.
2. what would make someone the right DC here?
Nothing can stop us....
I think it was sarcasm
gotta keep the mood light around here.
you apparently missed the sarcasm
even though it was dripping, and double battered, then fried and coated again for good measure….
Since you were unaware, I am the resident a$$hole. No really, just ask anyone, they'll tell you.

Yep, its true.
j/k
"I am the way, the truth, and the life...no one gets to the Father but through Me"
all we need is basic
He and the coaches don’t want to overload the players and they don’t have to. All we need is a basic D to compliment our great offense to compete for the ACC next year. If our D can force a few 3 and outs and some turnovers we will be fine. Mark should take his plan slow

Thanks!
Finally an interview with Stoops! From the video, my impressions are that the guy is smart—he’s soft spoken and speaks/thinks clearly. I have more confidence now that he has the IQ to be a good DC. Now I want to see proof that he can motivate the kids… Looking forward to seeing him do some YELLING on the sidelines!
Nothing can stop us....
Please don't fall into the Bob Knight mentality
Yelling is oftentimes counter-intuitive to effective coaching. It’s a variation of negative reinforcement. Yes, you will get the player to do the action, but it will be out of fear. They won’t want to achieve anything beyond the minimum required to not get yelled at, and they’ll usually act out in other ways (trash talking about the coach to other players). Tough love only works when there is a substantial doling out of positive reinforcement as well (see: Mickey Andrews).
Would you motivate your children by yelling at them? For a great coaching example, look to John Wooden instead of Bobby Knight.
Many styles work
but he doesn’t have to yell all the time.

I think good coaches mold their techniques to fit the individual players.
Players aren’t always motivated by the same methods.
"Trick is right."
Stoops said in the interview
that when he first met with all the players, many of them came in with heads hung low, looking at the ground. It made me think they’ve just been told they’re not playing hard enough, akin to that quote of Coach Andrews that was something to the effect of “the only adjustments I make during games are telling the kids to tighten their chinstraps.”
Coaching is like any other teacher, you need to know when to yell and hound the players and when to be supportive. As one of my education professors used to say “they have to know you care before they care what you know.”
I know you can fight. But it's our wits that make us men.
that's pretty sad.

Hudson will do enough motivating for our D
If you have seen Hudson talk he is awesome and could get anyone motivated, even if it was to play middle-Tennessee-culinary-school.
My impression is the same
He’s smart and has a clear plan of action. I think that’s what sold Jimbo. There’s a direction and a strategy that Jimbo probably respects. I think he was able to articulate his scheme in the interview and as an offfensive coach, Jimbo must have realized that Stoops’ D should be tough to attack.
From what I can understand so far
Stoops’ D philosophy is a Defensive version of Jimbo’s O philosophy….
not sure if anyone can understand what I mean by that
"Kill a fly with an axe"
sorta?
precise like how Jimbo is always picking the plays to attack you at different levels in so many different ways to expose any weakness you have and keep the D off balance….
and it appears Stoops’ keeps his defense ‘multiple’ to keep the offense off balance enough so as not to find a weakness in his D

I was just wondering if you were using catch phrases the 2 use.
Can’t recall if Fisher uses precision, though.
"Trick is right."
Precisely. Let us hope that some how we can win multiple games in the process of the season :)
Or that multiple players can process the playbook with some precision.
"I am not now at all sure that the tendency to treat the whole thing as a kind of vast game is really good - certainly not for me who find that kind of thing only too fatally attractive." - J R R Tolkein
I think its the simple dynamic of their schemes
Fisher’s offenses use a bunch of simple plays that attack different areas of the field. He doesn’t run very many plays, but he runs the plays out of several different looks.
I am imagining that Stoops has a similar philosophy, in that the scheme will be very simple, but the tactics will actually be quick complicated. Broken down, however, it will be much like Jimbo’s offense, running the same schemes out of different looks in order to harass the opponent.
I expect the team to look very solid in their direction.
Yes, that is what I was talking about
you put that in words better than I could

I think Fisher runs a ton of plays
sometimes I think he runs too many even, but with Ponder he can get away with that.
by Bud Elliott on Feb 23, 2010 12:53 PM EST up reply actions
I'd challenge that
To me I see a low number of plays ran out of many different sets. The rhythm of the play, the routes—they always seem very similar. Its the sets and personnel that change to throw you off
I’d love to do a film review, but I don’t have any game tape.
With that in mind, and just throwing this out there, I think it would be nice if some of our members thanked AC for posting these.
Just my thoughts for your consideration.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
I'd also like to point out that I find it quite humorous that the owner of that same site
that was adamant Stoops wasn’t interviewed, that he was in California the weekend of the “alleged” interview and that Fisher wasn’t even in Tallahassee during said “alleged” interview is now at this presser asking questions to the coach that “wasn’t” interviewed while Stoops is talking about how he flew out for an interview the day after his last regular season game in early December.
"Trick is right."
I don't know why anyone does that
there are so many ways of getting information nowadays, most notably, here!
Well they do it because they'll lose their income otherwise.
Which is why they are the “free information” Gestapo on their message boards.
"Trick is right."
what is a gimmicky /flashy defense?
I now what an with gimmicks and flash looks like. What is the a defense with these items? Is is one like the Pgh Steelers with a lot of all out blitzes?
PArt of me I think will mess the traditional Mickey attacking D. When they were ‘on’ they were like a pack of wild dogs.
But when the FSU D was getting ripped, like 2009, then I’m looking forward to the change.
I think he means trying to create turnovers at the expense of playing sound defense
Turnovers should be caused by leveraging your opponent into bad situations, not gambling unnecessarily.
I don't think we'll be seeing a lot of blitzes or eight man fronts to stop the run basically
If thats the case, our front four will have to show remarkable improvement. Haven’t a clue who the SDE will be, and that may be the most important position on the 2010 defense if Stoops won’t employ “gimmicks” to stop the run or apply pressure
by westcoastnolefan on Feb 22, 2010 9:18 PM EST up reply actions
He sort of touched on that.
Talked about how Arizona lead the Pac 10 in sacks despite not being a big blitzing team because his secondary forced a lot of coverage sacks. If everyone knows their job and does their job, sacks will happen.
"Trick is right."
Anyone else LOL
that the reporter who was whining about limited “access” to interviews with assistant coaches, Andrew Carter, got the 1st question in the interview with the new DC?
If irony were made out of strawberries, then AC would have been slurping on a huge smoothie during that session!
In all fairness to AC, that is his livelihood. While I have no problem with Jimbo's one voice philosophy, as someone who makes his bread and butter off of talking with anyone at FSU who will talk with him, I can see his concern.
Although I don’t think it will really hurt him much, I do understand where he is coming from.
The one who I think is the idiot (*newsflash**) is Bianchi who slammed Jimbo, and even included him in his stupid ass poll as one of the choices for dud-of-the-week and said FSU is now the most media unfriendly school in the state. Just about everything he has ever written during his career has been biased and he never passes up the opportunity to take cheap shots at FSU, but what can you expect from a Gaturd working for a Gatard run paper. Although I did share his POV on the Bobby force-out, IMO he has no right even discussing anything FSU related and he does an excellent job in his role as head dick.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
I understand where Carter is coming from.
Understand… but I couldn’t give a rat’s patootie about the media’s problems.
Unlimited access has done nothing for FSU. This program needs to have a “circle the wagons” mentality, fix its issues in private, take our public accolades when we win, and leave ’em guessing about the rest. Just like Saban does.

but after that, it is cut off.

I'm very excited that our guys will actually learn assignment accountability, to take on and get off blocks, and good angles before....
they try to be the next best thing in the country on an aggressive defense.
Imagine if mangum had actually been where he was supposed to be even half of the time last year. that alone might have been worth a win or two.
Yeah, right!
If he could just get them to stay in their lanes and avoid
being stuffed in the middle when a run bounces outside and to TACKLE with the body not the arms, I’d be a much happier camper.
They are so bunched up because they have no idea how to take on blocks.
Thus, if they started outside, they would never stop the inside run. At least bunched up they have a shot to use their speeeeed to get back to the outside. And because the man has cancer I won’t bag on Amato any more.
by Bud Elliott on Feb 23, 2010 10:14 AM EST up reply actions
Not to be the turd in the punchbowl
but cancer is not what made him crappy at his job. Its not like he has clean hands in this. With all the crap he spewed about other people, I still consider him fair game.
I think all of the above are going to get better
Just a base 4-3 zone, 4-3 man, 4-3 matchup, with a couple of blitzes each (if they are actually run fundamentaly sound) would do wonders for this defense. And that’s what he’s telling us he’s going to do.
There are enough atheletes on D now so that they WILL make plays even in the most basic schemes.
Yeah, right!
I was surpised
not by the interview, but at Andrew Carter’s voice. It just does not match the picture of him on the Sentinel’s website.
