Florida State Defensive Tackle Commit Nile Lawrence-Stample Impresses Scouts at Combine
Nile Lawrence-Stample held only two offers as of last week. One was from Colorado State. The other from the Florida State Seminoles. Part of his low profile was due to Nile playing at a decidedly non-football school. Nova HS is not a place where coaches usually look for talent. But FSU fans are really glad the Noles looked because Lawrence-Stample committed to Florida State after visiting last week's Junior Day event. On that same weekend, he attended a combine in SoFla. And everyone took notice of the 6'1.5" 299 lb defensive tackle.
The kid looks up to Dwight Freeney. That might seem unusual, considering Freeney is an undersized defensive end and Lawrence-Stample is a defensive tackle prospect who will eventually play at 310 lbs or so. But remember that Stample played a lot of linebacker last season at 280 lbs (not 265 as previously reported).
What Stample, who was recently added to the ESPNU 150 Watch List (about 385 of the nation's best prospects) did at the combine, however, might become stuff of legend. He benched 185 lbs 32 times. The next best competitor did it 29 times, and none of the other 200 competitors bested 25 reps. Stample ran a 4.90 laser timed 40-yard dash time, which was better than 125 other combine entrants, including many skill position players. His 30" vert is also really good for a 299 lb man. Keep reading to see the most impressive part of Stample's game:
But it is that 3-cone drill time that is so jaw dropping. 7.65 seconds at 299 lbs. 16 players went through that test of speed, agility, and change of direction between 7.63 and 7.68 seconds. Two WRs, 6 defensive backs, 3 running backs, two quarterbacks, 2 linebackers, and one man over 225 lbs (Lawrence at 299 lbs). That's insane. Here are some photos of the big man.

Here's some video of the big man running the drill (1:45 mark), courtesy of Manny Navarro who also tells us that Nile grew up playing soccer and not football. It's a long way till signing day (Feb 4th), but being a recruit's first offer means a lot and it seems likely Nile Lawrence-Stample will stick. It seems Florida State's coaches are now adding stars to kid's recruiting profiles rather than sitting back and recruiting off the lists of recruiting sites.
FSU sits at 8 commitments, all from Florida, 7 of which are on the ESPNU150 Watch List.

Different body types, (somewhat)similiar game.
Niles is longer and bigger. Sapp was more squat & fat. In terms of pure athleticism…you’re probably spot on. Niles borders on “freakishly” good athlete, and Sapp was the most athletic fat guy I think I’ve ever seen.
(his body was just WRONG—skinny arms, skinny calves, HUGE ass & gut)
Oderint Dum Metuant
His athleticism reminds me of Marcus Spears.
Nile might be a couple of inches shorter, but his athleticism is very similar. Marcus was a big dude that could line up outside.

for those of us who don't know florida geography
lovelady is the guy from the panhandle?
Karlos is the guy just above miami and Stample is from between orlando and tampa?
Or did I confuse Karlos and Stample?
Speak softly, and carry a big Spear
Davie is in Broward County
Suburb just west of Ft Lauederdale.
Yes Lovelady is from panhandle area.

Nova High School
Its very true what FSUncensored about Nova’s football talent, while I was in high school at neighboring Plantation they went win less one season and didn’t even score a touchdown all year! But it is wise that our current recruiting savvy coaches make a relationship with Nova’s coaches’ because in the future they will let us know about a talented prospect very early in their high school career, get on him early and bring him to Tally!

Ndamukong Suh
I’m aware that Nile has primarily played LB in high school, but since he will be playing DT @ FSU, what do you all think of a comparison b/w Nile’s potential and a player like Ndamukong Suh?
It will be interesting to see his transition to playing on the line
but he already has the attacker mindset if he was playing LB, so I’m not worried.
He’ll have to learn about hand placement and how to shed/defeat blocks. But his upside is tremendous. They’re not the same body types, but UM’s Allen Bailey comes to mind in terms of freak athlete moving to DT (Bailey came in as a LB and kept growing).
Hudson is most likely the only OG in the ACC (potentially, country) that could handle Bailey
Even then, he’ll lose some battles.
if Bailey continues his regular lifting regimen without slacking off or injury this offseason...
Nothing short of a wild steroid program will prevent McMahon from getting tossed around like a doll again this year.
No knock on Ryan, I just think Allen is another species. Unfair. I envy him and wish Nile or another FSU DT could fit the mold.

his max bench press is about the same as his power clean...
which is kind of odd. 380 bp and 375 pc.
Good fit
I think that with Nile’s size, speed and experience at LB he’s an ideal fit in Stoop’s D that has players lining up in multiple formations.
Nothing can stop us....
Nothing wrong with recruiting a kid...
that has ridiculous amounts of upside and character to boot. Jimbo and his LoEG continue to give reasons to believe.
love this and hate this
Love this because he is a beast and he has the potential to be something truly special. Hate this because its soooo early in the game, and I really don’t want any other programs to find out about him, and persuade him elsewhere. God bless we keep it up, recruiting has been nothing less than amazing.

We can take no chances. She seemed like a nice girl, eh? I nominate Rico.

I agree...
How often do you hear kids say “they were the first to offer me and I always remembered that”. Often.

I love Nile.
Almost went to Charleston to see their last show in the tour a couple weekends ago. Great reference. Didn’t expect to see it here, but glad I did.

If we have any influence, do we push him to play MLB, DT, or DE next year?
Do we want him to play his Senior season at LB again to strengthen his agility even moreso, or do we want him on the line practicing proper hand positioning and techniques?
Annihilator.

I guess we'd need to spell that: "A-Nile-ator"
or something like that just to get the “Nile” in there.
"The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary." Vince Lombardi
"We'll win games with talent, we'll win championships with character." Jimbo Fisher
I like Trample Stample
‘…….Look. The artist told me it means “huge sack” in Chinese….’ (no pun intended for the talented defensive tackle prospect)

Nile is now featured on the front page of ESPN's Recruiting Page
He’s getting some serious love from them. Any chance they give him a 5* ranking?
