2010 NFL Combine

The 2010 NFL Scouting Combine started yesterday and Mocking Dan over at fellow SBNation site Mocking The Draft has set up a combine page updated everyday with new links and articles.

http://www.mockingthedraft.com/pages/nfl-scouting-combine

He also has the schedule of events including the televised workout schedules for NFL Network and NFL.com.

http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2010/2/25/1326061/nfl-network-combine-schedule#storyjump

SBNation will have 5 representatives from the network in attendance, including bloggers from Music City Miracles, Cincy Jungle, Arrowhead Pride, Burnt Orange Nation, and Battle Red Blog.

Expected Seminoles in attendance include Patrick Robinson, Myron Rolle, and Dekoda Watson. Also former Seminole Preston Parker from North Alabama was invited. Parker will work out Sunday, Watson will be on Monday, and Rolle and Robinson are on the last day, Tuesday. Good luck to all the Seminoles invited.

Preston Parker

Even though he screwed up and hurt our team, I still hope he does well at the combine and gets drafted. That would mean we could potentially have four former seminoles drafted even though two of them were not on the team last year.

Yeah

Parker laid down a 4.67 and 4.69 in the 40. Not good numbers for a skill position player. They said “he was quick, but lacked top end speed. Good route runner.”

Other notable times today include

The 2 teammates from Clemson. CJ Spiller posted a 4.37 and Jacoby Ford laid down a blazing 4.28.

Here's some quotes from Rolle at the combine courtesy of Battle Red Blog

……Next up at the podium was Myron Rolle, S, FSU: “I want it as much as anyone else out here today,” it began. Rolle took the media on such a carpet ride that I don’t think anyone even bothered asking him about football beyond his motivation for it. He talked about having a roommate from Seoul who asked him why cameras were following him around and why he was famous, and how he tried to explain to him the concepts of the game. He talked about playing rugby, although he was a wing so he didn’t get too banged up. Of course, he talked about wanting to be a neurosurgeon later in his life, at about 40 or so, and how he was influenced by one of Ben Carson’s books (he didn’t say which). A popular question that teams were asking him was whether his time away from the game would hurt his football career in the future, and he noted that “my academic pursuits helped with football.” In particular he noted that patience and timing were key skills in research and he thought they translated well to football.

Defensive backs take the field today and Rolle and Robinson will both be working out.

Nobody cares how fast, quick or strong he is

He can’t throw a football which last time I checked is pretty imperative to playing QB.

It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee

nor can he read a defense -

even if he ‘re-learns’ how to throw a football (after 4 years of quality coaching) ask jamarcus how far the ability to throw gets you w/out the ability to read a defense gets you

Here's the official times for everyone who has worked out so far

you also can check the other skill drills and times. Ford’s time is right at 4.28. So far he is the only player whose official time was under 4.3.

I turn it on today

and the first name I hear is Dekoda Watson’s. Guess the LB’s are up now and the announcer says “i didnt know what was happening, all I heard were ooo-weeeeeee’s from the kids and I turn around and theyre talking about Dekoda Watson on the broad jump”

I do love that most of our guys are normally physical specimens.

That is not a CTC curse that is all teams

Asking any college guy to be “more” productive in the pros than in college is asking lots. Asking a great college player to do 2/3 as well as he did in college would be great. I do not follow the Chiefs, but I know if Glenn Dorsey made 2/3 of the type plays he made in college at the NFL level, that would be impressive.

I think Tommy Polley was an okay pro for the St. Louis Rams. I highly doubt he was what he was in college, but again, that is a smaller pool with bigger fish.

by nolestuff on Mar 2, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

No CTC curse??

You don’t think that getting AWAY from Chuck the Chest’s “coaching” (and I use that word loosely) can. does, and will result in more production from FSU LB’s in the NFL??

I happen to think that Dekota Watson, for 1, will be much more productive in the League then he was in Tally…..through no fault of his own.

Oderint Dum Metuant

by DRusso97 on Mar 2, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

it is not so much a defense of Chuck Amato

as saying that the NFL is much harder than college.

I prefer watching college football, but talent wise, the NFL is a filtering of the top talent in college, thus the odds are stacked against even talented guys sometimes.

I think had the defensive line done a better job of being where they should be, and just plain out not getting beat on penetration, then the linebackers would not have been having to be extra linemen as well as extra safeties.

by nolestuff on Mar 2, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but you're missing the point....

I think that Watson will be a BETTER NFL LB the he was in college….hense my invention of the “CTC curse”.

Oderint Dum Metuant

by DRusso97 on Mar 2, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

That just seems random though

Any player could be better in the pros. Right now I do not think there is enough to go on. I think it depends on which team gets him and uses him.

by nolestuff on Mar 2, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

DW played WLB in a 4-3 base scheme his entire career.

He will most likely wind up in the same position in the pros, and I have a feeling that—due to superior coaching—he will actually be a better player there.

While there obviously is no “curse”, CTC’s position coaching was craptastic in his 2nd go around…..and there’s not much use in debating that.

Oderint Dum Metuant

by DRusso97 on Mar 2, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

So you do not think any 3-4 teams

will give him a look? I think some might.

by nolestuff on Mar 2, 2010 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

True, but teams could

switch him to play inside. Lawrence Timmons is listed at 234 lbs on the NFL’s site. I have not really looked up any outside guys to see their weights, LT just came to mind.

by nolestuff on Mar 3, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

ILB's in a 3-4 are usually BANGERS. DW watson doesn't fit that mold....

…Then again, neither did Timmons—but I just don’t see it.

Jame Dukes

when talking about the Gator’s Carlos Dunlap, he said something about maybe it is because he is a Seminole, but he could not remember the last time UF put a good defensive end into the league. Ouch! The others questioned Dunlap’s character issues.

I also noticed, even though SEC fans say they have players with speed at all positions, not just skill positions, their top Dline guys at the combine were not any faster than some Dline guys from teams in other conferences. Hmmm!

I would pass

with the 3rd pick, of course. But a late first rounder or early second IMO.

Hes obviously got great measurables.

But his safety play never fully wowed me

I love that man’s abilities.

Agreed.

Mays is a hell of a hitter, but the general consensus is that he’s not up to par when it comes to coverage.

Good comparison.

Except Lott also made a fair amount of plays

That's a big difference

Was that his offical for the first run or second run?

by Polk Nole on Mar 2, 2010 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

First I believe.

I’m watching live coverage on NFL Network and they transposed his two runs on top of Jacoby Ford’s run and Ford significantly beat both runs.

by basaltrock on Mar 2, 2010 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

He may not even

run it at pro day if he is one of the 5 fastest db’s at the combine….

by Polk Nole on Mar 2, 2010 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

If P-Rob has anyone unsure about his speed...

They need to watch that play from the Gator Bowl where he ran down Noel Devine. That cleared up any doubts in my mind.

by basaltrock on Mar 2, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Did the same for me

If you catch Devine, from behind? Thats dumb.

"alot of people dont realize that FSU is about to TAKE OFF" - Telvin Smith

by numberonenole on Mar 2, 2010 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I hope he has really good work outs

That time will not help him much with people like Mays running sub 4.3 and Berry posted 4.44 earlier. Hope the Falcons get him in the 3rd

by BS37FSU on Mar 2, 2010 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

4.69 = 5th round

It’s kinda sad, but I think Myron might not even make it into the first 4 rounds. Mays and Berry are freaks and first rounders, so I don’t expect Rolle to be nearly as fast, but almost 4.7 is going to seriously hurt him.

by TonySopraNOLE on Mar 2, 2010 12:05 PM EST reply actions

PRob's footwork is awful, decent ball contol

Myron had a fantastic turn in drills. Appears much better than PRob in coverage.

Well to Mickey's defense we have had a pass rush up until this year

Everette Brown leaving early really hurt badly this aspect of our team.

by BS37FSU on Mar 2, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

that and poor recruiting/bad luck

If Callahan Bright had ever made it in, may have helped the recent history. Getting Marvin Austin and some of the other near misses also might have helped, but too late to know now. Pass rush is key though, you are correct. Zone, Man, Prowler, whatever you put out there, if the QB gets time and receivers get time, they usually win.

I am somewhat surprised the team did not blitz more to make up for lack of the Dline. If they did blitz lots, it sure did not seem like it, because they rarely got to the QB, except a few times in the Prowler and in the first game with Reid got to Harris. They were giving up big plays anyways, might as well have brought the house more often for that matter.

by nolestuff on Mar 2, 2010 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

not to relive this discussion - but

mickey’s scheme was very much outdated and didnt fool many people –
but an even bigger problem was their inability (unwillingness?) to recruit players w/ size, and enough of them -

this year we were so undersized and had so few servicable bigs that we would have been poor if we had the best scheme

by 000111 on Mar 2, 2010 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Was it not trying to recruit size or just not landing them?

Again, they tried for defensive tackles like Callahan Bright, Marvin Austin and defensive ends like Da’quan Bowers. They whiffed. Well, I guess they did not whiff on landing Bright, but might as well have.

They were definitely not against having big guys. Corey Simon, Jeff Womble, and Broderick Bunkley to name a few were large men.

by nolestuff on Mar 2, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

Odell got lazy in recruiting

As everyone else got lazy in everything. It was a climate. Amato was the guy who wouldn’t recruit size.

>>---l>

by DKfromVA on Mar 3, 2010 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

not landing yhem b/c they were lazy and outworked by other schools

not doing the work to make sure we had servicable plan ‘b’ guys in place if the big-names didnt work out b/c they were cocky

and not seeing this problem coming in advance and working the juco angle the past couple years b/c they stopped caring

imo

by 000111 on Mar 3, 2010 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

The prowler made me sad....

It seemed as though we had to use it so there was any type of pressure. The formation itself I like.
