Florida State 2010 Recruiting Class

Jeff Luc | Middle Linebacker | Treasure Coast HS (Port St. Lucie, FL)

6' 1" / 245 lbs/ 4.6  Videos: [1] [2Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  5*/ 85 Rating/ # 11 Overall/ #1 MLB
- Rivals: 4*/ 6.0 Rating/ #48 Overall/ #1 MLB
- Scout: 5*/ #2 MLB

Enrolled this Spring.

Notes:  Jeff started the season as a 5* recruit on rivals, in the top 10 nationally, and considered by many the best LB in the country. Some people, as with happens with elite recruits, wanted to nitpick with him and pointed to a lack of fluidity (stiff hips in coverage). If you watch him play TE you can see more of the hip fluidity, but he really isn’t asked to do much coverage at Treasure Coast so it is harder to evaluate that part of his game.  However ESPN stayed steady in their evaluation that he is a top 15 player in the country.

Luc is incredibly physically advanced for his age.  He literally has prototypical Mike LB size. He is very built, and compact. While he is not the tallest guy he still has long arms which help make up that difference. One thing you will notice when watching him play is that he has a nose for the football, he is always around the play; often ending it himself. In run support he rarely gets turned away due to his elite strength, and he scrapes well with blockers/trash in the area. He does have hips that are on the stiff side, he is at his best when running down hill or side to side in a straight line.  Physically ready to play as a true freshman and made it in for spring which is huge for conditioning, weigh lifting, and acclimation.

Parade All-American.  Homecoming king.

Clint Trickett | Quarterback | North FL Christian HS (Tallahassee, FL)

6' 2" /175/ 4.75     Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 75 Rating/ #84 QB
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.6 Rating/  #36 QB
- Scout: 3*/ #35 QB

Enrolled in Spring

Notes:  Extremly accurate and inteligent football player.  Arm strength is average but did improve as a senior.  Son of FSU offensive line coach Rick Trickett and Clint has picked up a lot from being around the game for so long.  Clint has good balance and a clean delivery.  Consistently repeatable mechanics help with his accuracy.  Good leader who already has a solid rapport with the returning upperclassmen.  A good comparison is Colt McCoy (average arm, good accuracy, high football IQ, not a next-level stud prospect).  Riley Skinner or Drew Brees are also good comparisons.  Clint is the top quarterback in Florida and had interest from UF, UGA, and Arkansas.    H's a kid who can easily add 20 lbs.

Debrale Smiley | Running Back | Thomas Co. Central HS/ Itawamba JUCO

: 5' 11 1/2" /235 /4.6    Enrolled Spring

Rankings:
- ESPN:  does not rate JUCO players
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.6 Rating
- Scout: 4*

Notes:
Was an all-state selection and named Thomasville Times-Enterprise's Offensive Player of the Year in 2007. Set records at Central for touchdowns in a season (35), touchdowns in a career (81) and rushing yards in a season (2,028).  Some legendary stuff in South Georgia.  Smiley is mature.  He enters as a redshirt sophomore with 3 years of eligibility.  He has a wife and 2 kids and we think he 22 years old.  Violent runner with tremendous power and great balance for his size.  A successful sign and place by FSU in 2008.

Anthony "Amp" McCloud | Def Tackle | Thomas Co. Central HS/ Itawamba JUCO

6' 3" / 305 lbs | Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- ESPN: Does not grade JUCO players
- Rivals: 3*/  5.6
- Scout: 3*/ 5.6

Enrolled this Spring |  Will be (rs) Sophomore

Notes:  A successful sign and place by FSU in 2008.  Thomasville Times-Enterprise's Defensive Player of the Year for 2007.  Won the award over Clemson's DT Brandon Thompson, who is a projected 1st/ 2nd round pick as a Junior should he come out next year

Holmes Onwukaife | Outside Linebacker | Cedar Park HS (Austin, TX)

6' 2 1/2" / 223 lbs/ 4.55  Videos: [1] [2(Green Shorts)]

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 78 Rating/ # 46 DE
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.7 Rating/ #29 OLB
- Scout: 3*/ #38 DE

Signed & Faxed 9: 45 AM

Commitment Story  Signed LOI last Friday in mock ceremony because his school is closed Mon-Wed this week.  See links.

Notes: 1340 SAT.  From Kenya.  Also has an offer from Harvard.  Holmes is a very intelligent player.  He plays with great leverage and has good strength.  He is not a burner but he is in position to make plays because he takes on blocks rather than trying to run around them.  Good use of the hands from his days as a defensive end.

Signing Day Story:  [TN was the only site to cover Holmes signing day event]  Holmes Onwukaife officially signed his Letter of Intent to attend Florida State University on a football scholarship today in Austin, Texas, at a ceremony held at Cedar Park High School. Onwukaife spoke briefly and thanked his coaches, family, his teamates, and the administration at the school. The Rivals 3-star linebacker suffered a traumatic ankle injury and his father could not say enough in gratitude, mentioning that many administrators spent hours and even overnights with the family at the hospital. Holmes said he is fully recovered is ready to take on the challenge at the next level. When asked what was the deciding factor to attend FSU, Holmes complemented the coaches and the atmosphere they are building in Tallahassee. "Definitely the coaches, the family atmosphere. After I went to the camp last summer, it just felt like home", Onwukaife explained. Holmes confirmed that he would redshirt his first year, but denied any notion of a greyshirt. While he has not decided on a major at FSU as of yet, he is leaning towards majoring in a health related field. -- Barry K.

Telvin Smith | Outside Linebacker | Lowndes HS (Valdosta)

6' 3" / 210 lbs/  Commitment Story  | Update

Video:  [1] (Jr Film)  Announced Monday Night

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 80 Rating/ # 107 Overall/ #8 OLB
- Rivals: 4*/ 5.8 Rating/ #18 OLB
- Scout: 3*/ #27 OLB

Signed & Faxed LOI @ 11:35

Notes: Smith is a great upfield, vertical attacking linebacker with a difference maker presence on the perimeter. This kid can run as well as most linebackers in this class and make plays sideline-to-sideline. Has a tall, rangy, high-cut frame with a ton of physical development left. Utilizes his lengthy body and wingspan along with his great acceleration to cover a ton of ground quickly on his pursuit to the football. His range on both run and pass support is highly coveted at the next level. Plays inside and out but is more natural and highly productive as a pressure perimeter 'backer. Gets a quick jump off the snap and has striking initial burst and upfield acceleration. Very difficult to outflank to the perimeter with his great closing and recovery speed when he does get caught out of position. Takes sharp direct angles to the ball with little wasted motion.  Picked FSU over Georgia, Auburn, and LSU.

Terrence Brooks | Cornerback | Dunnellon HS (Brooksville)

5'11"/ 170/ 4.45 |  Film:  [1] | Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 79 rating/ #21 CB
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.7 Rating/ #45 CB
- Scout: 3*

LOI Signed & Faxed 9AM

Notes:  Brooks is a big hitter, almost safety like, at the CB position.  He runs very well.  We like his feet, his quickness, and his ability to stay with receivers too.  His hips, judging by some recent 7 on 7 tournaments, are excellent.  In the words of one Florida scout, "he's built like a tree trunk.  His legs are thick."  Brooks certainly seems to have all the tools to excel at the position in college.  Brooks would be perfect in a zone scheme because he is not a track burner but rather is very quick.  He has the hand and upper body strength to be a excellent press cornerback in college.   .

Mike Harris | Cornerback | El Camino JUCO (Torrance, CA)

6'0" / 185 lbs/ 4.4 | Videos: [1] [2 (scroll to bottom)]

Rankings:
- ESPN:  Doesn't evaluate JUCO players
- Rivals: 4*/ 5.8 Rating/ #2 JUCO CB
- Scout: 3*

Signed & Faxed  Commitment Story

Notes:  Good stride and smooth backpedal. These things are what make a fluid CB, a "true" CB rather than a hybrid DB type. He absolutely has the hips to stay at the position, as he has been a stand out player for his Junior college the past year. Many evaluaters liken him to a  4* 5* type of talent.  He can have an immediate impact on next year's defense. On top of that he is great in space and one of the most physical corners we have seen. He can play in the league one day.  Offer from Alabama.

Will Tye | Tight End | The Salisbury School (Salisbury, CT)

6' 3" / 230 lbs/ 4.6 | Video [1] | Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 78 Rating/ # 19 TE
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.6
- Scout: 3*/ #19 TE

LOI Signed & Received

Notes:  With his size and quickness, Tye is an immediate match-up problem for college defenses.  Florida State can "flex" him out wide if they choose.  Will Tye wants and attacks the ball.  He plays against poor competition, but his quarterback is also terrible and he had to adjust to a lot of bad throws.  He needs to improve his route running and blocking.  But the kid is extremely athletic.  Tye also impressed in the Texas High School All-Star Event in which he recently participated.  He repeatedly finds a way to come down with the ball.

Cameron Erving | Defensive Tackle | Colquitt Co. HS (Moultrie, GA)

6' 5" / 285 lbs/ | Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 76 Rating/ # 86 DT
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.6
- Scout: 3*/ #43 DT

Signed & Faxed

Notes:  Erving made 1st Team All-State in Georgia's highest classification.  He's only played football for 2 years and defensive tackle for one season.  He is very raw but has a lot of ability.  Definitely needs a redshirt.  Projects to play at over 300 lbs.

Christian Jones | Outside Linebacker | Lake Howell HS (Orlando, FL)

6' 4" / 225 lbs/ 4.55| Videos: [1] [2Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  5*/ 83 Rating/ # 27 Overall Player/ #2 OLB
- Rivals: 5*/ 6.1 Rating/ #22 Overall Player/ #2 OLB
- Scout: 4*/ #5 OLB

Signed on ESPNews & Faxed @ 10:30

Notes:  As impressive physical speciman, he's fast, fluid, and very athletic for his size, with much more room for growth. A versatile player, Jones could play any linebacker position for FSU.  Jones has great lateral movement (sideline to sideline).   He is everything you want from a LB in this day and age.  Jones has also shown the ability to blow up the ballcarrier.  He has explosiveness (closing speed), and this is a kid that's just going to improve with coaching and proper weight training.  Jones has played DE a little for his high school, and he's excellent at rushing the passer..

Kenny Shaw | Wide Receiver | Dr. Phillips HS (Orlando, FL)

6' 0" / 160 lbs/ 4.45 | Videos: [1] | Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 81 Rating/ # 92 Overall/ #14 WR
- Rivals: 4*/ 5.9 Rating/ #116th Overall/ #15 WR
- Scout: 4*/ #28 WR

Signed & Faxed

Notes: Think Snoop Minnis, but quicker.  Shaw is a speedster who will be a nightmare in the slot.  He catches everything.  he is a tremendous route runner.  And there isn't a DB in the country who can cover Shaw 1-on-1 because he is so incredibly quick in and out of his breaks.  He is weak and will need to play in the slot to avoid getting jammed.  Think Wes Welker for the Patriots when he was at Texas Tech.

Jarred Haggins | Wide Receiver | Lakeland HS (Lakeland, FL)

6' 0" / 180 lbs/ 4.6 | Videos: [1] | Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 78 Rating/ #46 ATH
- Rivals: 3*/ #58 ATH
- Scout: 3*/ # 48 S

Prospect signed and letter received

Notes:  Is a smooth, good looking athlete with excellent quickness, change-of-direction and ability to make people miss when on the move.  He's a quick-footed athlete and is extremely slippery to bring down in the open field.  Flashes loose hips and great stop/start cutting ability--does not lose much in his transition.  Tough kid who fights for yards despite not being a big kid.   More quick and shifty than fast.  Overall, Haggins is just a good football player. He is confident, tough, shows good leadership and he can certainly create mismatches with the ball in his hands.  Reminds many of Preston Parker.  Cousin of FSU DL coach O'Dell Haggins

Bjoern Werner | D-Line/ O-Line | The Salisbury School (Salisbury, CT)

6' 4" / 270 lbs/ 4.7 | Videos: [1Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 79 Rating/ #24 DE
- Rivals: 3*/ #65 DT
- Scout: 3*/ # 48 S

Signed & Faxed.

Notes: First thing that jumps off the screen at you is his pursuit of the football. He understands pursuit angles and when he decides he is going to chase a play down he is usually successful. On contact with a ball carrier he is extremely violent. You can tell how raw he is by the way he uses his hands. His first step is not explosive but is quick, he possesses a good short\compact first step that a SDE needs. Is a very long, lean specimen-his body type reminds me of Grant Wistrom\Chris Long. Seems to be decisive, does not get stuck with his feet dead. Is a natural athlete that possesses good natural footwork.  Tremendous motor that cannot be coached.  He even played weakside linebacker for Salisbury. Werner has got amazing feet, from watching his tight end film. Has a violent punch that needs to be refined. Needs to work on keeping his elbows in closer to his body.  He could also make an excellent offensive lineman.  Great feet.  -Oline0175 (high school coach in Delaware)

Very raw as he is from Germany and hasn't played much football.  Tremendous athlete and will turn 21 as a freshman in college.

.

Chad Abram | Safety | Kathleen HS (Lakeland, FL)

6' 0" / 190 lbs/ 4.6 | Film

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 80 Rating/ #13 Safety
- Rivals: 3*/ #26 Safety
- Scout: 3*/ # 51 Safety

Prospect signed and letter received.

Notes:  This kid can play.  He understands football and is smart.  He's not huge but he is not small.  Good frame.  Excellent ball skills.  Big hitter and he is excellent in deep coverage though he can play the run very well.  Offered by Nick Saban as well.

Damien Jacobs | Defensive Tackle | H.L. Bourgeois  HS (Houma, LA)

6' 3" / 300 lbs/ 5.1 Video [1] [2Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 77 Rating/ # 62 DT
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.6 Rating/ #75 DT
- Scout: 4*/ #67 DT

Signed & Faxed

Notes:  Jacobs is a very big kid.  He can maul opponents with his strength.  Needs technique and a college level S&C program, both of which FSU can provide.  Good straight ahead player who us very strong and tough to move.  Not much for lateral quickness.  Should be a major plug in the middle for FSU.

Darious Cummings | Defensive Line| Astronaut HS (Titusville, FL)

6' 2" / 265 lbs/ 4.8

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 81 Rating/ # 130 Overall/ #12 DT
- Rivals: 4*/ 5.8 Rating/ #169 Overall/ #11 SDE
- Scout: 4*/ #18DT

LOI Signed & Faxed FSU's first 2010 commitment.

Notes:  Great quickness and great use of his hands.  He has the shoulders to carry 275-280lbs and be a dominant SDE.  Very low center of gravity makes him difficult to block.  Plays with great leverage and should be a dominant strong-side run defender who will also push the pocket.

Christian Green | Wide Receier | Tampa Catholic HS (Tampa, FL)

6' 2" / 195 lbs/ 4.4 | Video links included in Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 82 Rating/ # 53 Overall/ #9 Athlete
- Rivals: 4*/ 5.9 Rating/ #61 Overall/ #7 Athlete
- Scout: 5*/ #5 WR

Signing at 3:35 on ESPNU.

Notes:  Stud.  Raw as a wide receiver but an absolute stud.  Played QB for Tampa Catholic.  Amazing athlete.  Will probably play at 215lbs as a wide receiver.  Extremely fast and quick.  Amazing body control.  He explodes.  Considering he hasn't played much receiver, his hands are superb.  Body control is excellent.  Will be almost impossible to bring down in the open field.  Very smooth too.  A player who clearly gets it.  Cousin of E.G. Green.    Two Florida scouts had one word to say about his March performance in the Tampa 7 on 7: uncoverable.  He was the best WR and was named Most Outstanding Player at that event, which included Chris Dunkley, Lamarcus Joyner, Jeff Luc, Matt Elam, Da'Rick Rogers, De'Joshua Johnson, and a host of other top prospects.  During the U.S. Army All American Game practices, Green was consistently one of the best receivers there.

DeJoshua Johnson | Safety | Pahokee HS (Pahokee, FL)

5' 10" / 150 lbs/ 4.4 Video [1Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 79 Rating/ # 35 WR
- Rivals: 4*/ 5.8 Rating/ #203 Overall/ #30 WR
- Scout: 4*/ # 46 WR

Signed & Faxed @ 8:56

Notes:   Energy.  He is the spark.  Johnson is explosive and electrifying. He is as quick as he is fast, reaching top speed in his first step. He shows the ability to get off the line with burst and quickness and is a tough guy to press. Shows exceptional separation on vertical routes. Consistently turns defensive backs around and shows the ability to explode into and out of his cuts. Has the rare ability to stop and start with no wasted motion and is a terror in space. He has excellent hands, shows the ability to snatch on the run and can get up field immediately. Shows good body control, can adjust to poorly-thrown balls and has a second gear when tracking down vertical throws. Can create separation immediately in tight man-to-man matchups. Runs crisp routes, knows how to get open and is very fluid. Has rare change-of-direction, is a threat after the catch and is elusive in the open field. Can be an explosive returner in the kicking game. Johnson can flat-out run and he is a player all coaches covet because he causes problems in space. Johnson must be accounted for when split out in the slot and teams will regret playing without the extra defensive back.

Lamarcus Joyner | Cornerback | St. Thomas Aquinas HS (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

5' 8" / 165 lbs/ 4.4 | Videos & Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  5*/ 87 Rating/ #6 Overall/ #1 Corner
- Rivals: 5*/ 6.1 Rating/ #14 Overall/ #1 Corner
- Scout: 5*/ #1 Corner

Signed & Faxed

Notes:  Possibly the fastest kid in Florida.  Just a great great player.

-I was expecting to be good...but I was shocked at his skills. Bill Greene posted my text to him from FNL after I watched a few reps...can't post that here because of recruiting forum rules, but I was fired up. The kids hips are like a swivel but the pads never raise. He explodes out of every cut and glides like he is on waterskiis. Played every rep in straight press technique...no cushion at all. He is the most impressive HS DB I've personally witnessed and he the potential to be a great one. Bill Greene asked me if 6-star was a proper nickname...I told him 6 is too low.

Great instincts, great competitiveness, and an amazing athlete.

Greg Dent | Wide Receiver | Glades Central HS (belle Glade, FL)

6' 0" / 180 lbs/ 4.5 Video [1Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 77 Rating/  #57 Safety
- Rivals: 4*/ 5.8 Rating/ #32 Athlete
- Scout: 4*/ #19 Safety

LOI signed and received.

Notes:  This is a great athlete.  His best attribute is his body control.  He is from the Muck.  Dent absolutely dominated the Muck Bowl in 2009.  He had 6 catches for 185 yards, 2 TDs.  Mix in a 85 yard kick return for a TD and he had about 270 yards of total offense.  On defense he had about 9 tackles, 3 PBUs, and a fumble recovery.  FSU didn't think he could play wide receiver, so he committed to Miami.  Then they saw him play receiver again in person and told him he'd be playing wideout.  The lifelong FSU fan switched immediately back to FSU.  His prowess as a wideout isn't nationally known because he played a lot of DB towards the end of his Junior season due to team need.

Nigel Terrell | Outside Linebacker |  Pelham HS (Pelham, AL)

6' 3" / 215 lbs/ 4.55  Video &  Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  4*/ 81 Rating/ # 120 Overall/ #11 OLB
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.5 Rating/ #65 OLB
- Scout: 3*/ #46 OLB

Currently an FSU commitment. Signs around 3:15 (not sure if he meant Eastern or Central)

Notes:  A very disruptive perimeter defender, Terrell is just lacking a bit of size and polish to be considered a premier outside linebacker in this class. Can run, close and hit as good as most linebackers in this class. Tall, long and rangy and his well-defined body still looks to have a ton of physical development left. Very difficult to outflank and reach this guy on the outside; he has a supreme blend of first-step quickness, acceleration and body length. Covers a ton of ground quickly in the short-area and displays smooth hips and good footwork needed to redirect and mirror in space.  Takes direct angles without a lot of wasted motion.  Excels as a vertical attacker and pass rusher. Anticipates the snap, flashes explosive get-off and can effectively dip and rip under the blocker's pads to get the edge.  He reminds us of former VT linebacker Xavier Adibi.

Tank Sessions | Tight End| Columbia HS (Decatur, GA)

6' 6" / 230 lbs/ 4.7 Video & Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  2*/ 74 Rating/ # 58 TE
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.6 Rating/ #30 TE
- Scout: 3*/ #27 TE

Currently an FSU  commitment.  Don't know when he is signing so he is placed last on the list.

Notes:  He has good straight-line speed. He comes from a Wing-T offense (they don't throw the ball much) and has experience as an in-line blocker. Displays more of a physical nature on offense.  Displays the ability to come out of his stance low and generate power from his hips on contact.  Needs coaching but projects as a capable blocker.  Will need to redshirt.

Dan Foose  | Offensive Tackle| Paramus Catholic HS (Paramus, NJ)

6' 6" / 310 lbs/ 4.9 Video & Commitment Story

Rankings:
- ESPN:  3*/ 75 Rating/ # 93 OT
- Rivals: 3*/ 5.6 Rating/ #53 OT
- Scout: 3*/ # 49 OT

LOI Signed and Received.  FSU switched Foose from illinois.

Notes:  Foose is a tall, powerful kid.  He's smart and has good athleticism for his size.  A bit of a late bloomer.  Trickett liked his senior film.  Needs to work on his technique (ahem... coach Trickett... line 1).   Has the work ethic.  Heard rumblings an over-bearing coach pushed him to his Illinois commitment.   The 'Noles need a little Jersey Shore.
