Mark Stoops on NSD
Was anyone else disappointed with Coach Stoops during NSD. Jimbo had Coach Coley introduce the players on offense that signed LOIs and Stoops announce the defense which accounted for the bulk of players and also most of the players with national notoriety (Luc, Joyner, Jones etc.)
I understand that Stoops was new on the scene and not responsible for recruiting these players, but he seemed very unprepared during the presentation with sometimes painful silence only broken by the occasional repetitious chatter about a good player from a good family. Thankfully some of the clips were so good and entertained the crowds i.e. Jeff Luc's. Wow everyone he tackled ended up landing with their feet in the air!
I may be too critical, but this was my much anticipated first introduction to Stoops. Coley did such a tremendous job sharing stories and discussing what separated this player from the other 3 or 4 stars making us proud to have them in the Nole family. I hope stoops prepares better on gameday than he does for his very important first impression to a fan base that is going to notice when someone is winging it.
By the way how cool is Coach Hudson.... Now there is a guy that I would want to finish a play for!

Mark Stoops
seems like a Stoops brother. I was not expecting a whole lot out of him up in front of the crowd. I LOVE Coach Hudson! There is a guy no one will have trouble playing for
I know you can fight. But it's our wits that make us men.
You can see why they love him at ECU
and why “he and Trickett cant recruit together”
:)
Who cares if he is a good quote or not? You are paying him to be a great football coach, not to entertain you on signing day.
He is paid $195,000 in speaking engagements!!!
I believe we should give stoops the benefit of the doubt due to the fact he has only been here for a month. However, I hope stoops does a better job of preparing himself to talk at future events. I also hope that stoops will be able to close on future DB commits in the future. We lost out on a lot of target recruits and i hope its not a result of his inability to connect with the players.
$195,000
is most definitely NOT for speaking engagements. It may be formally on paper, but it is only there to supplement a higher pay for coaching. It’s more a PR move than anything. it looks better to say he’s getting payed $300,000 from the University than $500,000 , and makes the stark increase that coaches have REALLY been getting look not as drastic as it really is.

About Stoops being a good quote?
No I don’t think they care about that. Saban and Meyer both come across as drab at best whenever a mic is in front of them, but they are both known to be great recruiters.

I don't necessarily mean a good quote. I mean comfortable and personable.
Stoops seemed out of his comfort zone. I’m saying that if he is like that while recruiting, I think recruits would care.
Doubt he is the same on the trail
People say Saban is a great guy when he is in a kid’s living room. But when he is sitting in front of a mic he comes across like he is about to bite a reporter. Same goes with Meyer and to a lesser extent Tressell. You can’t really judge how a guy will be on the trail by his interviews because the only coaches I can think of that come across as remotely personable are Carroll, Fisher and Brown.

Just watch some of the videos of him on y outube from Arizona
He spoke much better. I think it was just a matter of him not having time to prepare to speak about those players at that particular time.
I agree that was more of a factor than anything else.
He probably should’ve made mention of that. I was only saying that kids do care if their recruiter is a good speaker or not. Never heard of a good salesman that was a lousy speaker.
Gahnki?
Are you even a Seminoles fan… You seem to be a blog-aholic with a mixed bag of memberships. I care if our university can speak in public. We are always critical of college player interviews. The least we can have is a staff of educated men that represent our university and come prepared to major events for our program. I’m not expecting a “good quote”, but preparedness.
Sounds like you are attacking Gahnki
Don’t know if you meant it that way, but that is how your first sentence comes across in print. Who exactly is critical of player interviews? The players job is to play the game and the coaches get paid to coach them up. I could care less about how dynamic they are behind a mic, and being uncomfortable with public speaking is what usually makes people appear unprepared. The bit in coach’s salary for speaking engagements is just to justify pay increases and in no way meant to be taken literally.

I don't know how long you were on the site
Before signing up in Jan. , but if you have seen gahnki’s posts the last six months, or even look where he posts and how often, you would know a little more about gahnki before making such an erroneous and ill-thought-out statement. But you are entitled to your opinion which is why I love TN.
To the second part, I feel that coach Stoops was ill-prepared to talk about his guys, and that should have been expected. He didn’t even get here until after Arizona’s bowl game. I did get the vibe that he seemed like a man who knew a whole heck a lot more about football than he showed, he seemed like the guy who wasn’t an entertainer, but was very smart in what he is really getting paid for. We have guys who can entertain, but if Stoops can get our guys back to top form, I wouldn’t care if he walked around talking to a stuffed animal!

That was me trying waaaay too hard to find something to be unhappy about. That’s what this thread is about, right?

Yeah, I agree Here
It is a depressed real estate market, they probably bought close to the top of the market. It is definately going to take time to sell their house, and get everything packed up. Man If I was a coach I don’t think I would buy a house.
I agree..He didn't know anything about any of our recruits & there was some awkward moments during his presentation..
the whole time I was like damn, I know more about these kids than he does. New to the program or not…he could have had 60 seconds of bs prepared about his future players.
"May the gods keep the wolves in the hills and the women in our beds."
I would have been sorely dissapointed
if he BS’d 60 seconds for all 12 defensive recruits.
And every competent Seminole fan (more now than ever!) would have seen through a coach BSing about a kid. Remember, we’ve followed these kids all year, he has followed them for, at the time, about a month or less.
I would think the first and most important thing he would do would be to learn about guys already in the system than guys who were not even on the team yet, regardless of talent. It seems to me that he has done that quite well according to Jimbo.

I was sorely dissapointed..
just sitting there in an awkard silence..
not everbody follows recruiting at the same level, so while some could tell he was kida blah blah blahing about the kids..the same information could have been new & insightful to others.
just saying for a NSD event, with the main focus on the new recruits coming in, one would think he would have been a little more informative.
"May the gods keep the wolves in the hills and the women in our beds."
I was also disappointed.
Stoops demeanor was very guarded. He did not appear to be excited by any player. If there was an odd-man-out, it was stoops. He had long periods of silence as if he didnt know the players, but sometimes the film spoke for itself, but yea, i was disappointed in Stoops.
Also first impressions count, and I read he was late for his first staff meeting. :) Putting the 2 together, I think Stoops has a lot to prove..
Let's give the guy a chance before we break out the pitchforks.
I don’t think Jimbo was putting too much on the new guys during the first month. Job #1 was find a place to live, get packed, and get your families in town. Stoops was still in that process and looking forward to going to get his wife and family.
The new guys, including Stoops, chipped in on recruiting a little. His main order of business needs to be on reviewing our existing guys and figuring out he is going to transform them into something more solid than gelatin.
I’d be interested to hear the full story about Stoops being late for a meeting. What time was the meeting held, when did Stoops arrive from AZ, what caused him to be late, etc. For all I know, he arrived from AZ late the night before, was suffering from jet lag, I’ll guess that the meeting was probably held somewhere between 7 & 8 AM, Stoops may have been reviewing film or doing something else work-related prior to the meeting, or he may simply have had trouble finding the meeting room / bldg on his first day. I’d also venture to bet that he was only a few minutes and that nothing substantive occurred before he arrived. Maybe HR kept him doing some sort of orientation material, W-9’s or whatever. Not a big deal.
He was a bit nervous or guarded or whatever you want to call it. He has a crap defense that he inherited from one of the greatest DCs of all-time and an overwhelming fan favorite-Mickey Andrews. He didn’t want to bash Mickey, and he has big shoes to fill. He has great talent, and many fans will expect big things out of this group.
Some coaches like Belicek just don’t talk much. They still get the job done. Most of what Coley said was BS and ad-libbed. I think Stoops was tired, cautious, and concerned about getting his family to town. He’ll settle in and be fine.
He has proven he can coach DBs at Wyoming, UM, and AZ, and he’s been a good DC. He doesn’t have much to prove. Hud has been a great DC at ECU. With Stoops and Hud, the D will improve; we’ll be fine.
Knowing the recruits and standing up and talking about them are different things. I’d bet than many fans who claim to know a lot about our recruits would not have done much better at giving the presentation.

Nailed it.

Public presentations in front of an unfamiliar group can be awkward. Mark was DB coach at Miami, his brother was DC at UF, he is following Mickey Andrews as DC at FSU. That’s some scary stuff to think about when you first get up in front of a bunch of ‘Nole fans. He obviously didn’t bring his notecards with him. Even so, I wouldn’t let a performance at a presser worry you. Worry about how his players perform on the field.

You suck. As I was reading down the comments, I was hoping for the chance to be my typical a$$hole self, but you beat me to the punch. Again, you suck.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
He can coach a secondary up
His resume shows that. If he can also come up with overall good defensive schemes then I do not care that much about how well he speaks. Mickey Andrews was not a master speaker. Rick Trickett is not either.

I humbly beg to differ. Rick Trickett is definitely a master speaker. I’m constantly in stitches whenever he talks. I quote him all the time. Guy’s like a living Clint Eastwood movie. (and I hope it goes without saying I get your point here too)

Rick Trickett knocks them dead on the banquet circuit.
They can’t get enough of him.

He probably wouldn't go over to well in California

Stoops
NoleQB, after watching coach stoops presentation, its clear he wasnt able to speak on those kids the way coley was only because he hasnt been here recruiting them….. if you noticed, he spoke about mike harris in detail only because he was obviously recruiting him at arizona. he’ll do better next year
hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard
I know we all love the dynamic Greg Hudson,
but there must be a reason Jimbo made Stoops the DC.
My values: I love my wife, admire my dog, and believe very deeply that Bobby Bowden and Paula Dean were separated at birth.
How would you have felt if he said those boys are going to have to get out there and make a play?

there’s not a lot of video out there on stoops, but above is apparently from 10/19/2009 after they beat Stanford two days earlier. it’s clear he’s a serious guy and i think he knows a thing or two about football.
my dad grew up with bob stoops in y-town and played for coach ron stoops in high school. mark was a lot younger, but the thing about ron and bob is that they are mentors and father figures to young men. they’re not flashy guys, but if mark is anything like his brother and father (which he looks to be), he’ll bring a very high level of football knowledge and likely a good judge of personal character. this was an excellent hire and i really believe he will turn the defense around. if anything, his being from NE ohio ought to give him some credibility. he’s not from the south which may be a good thing because if he can help us tap into midwest (and pac-10 area) recruiting and get kids to go to FSU, we’ll be very good very quickly.
what is it about Ohio that produces top coaches...
the Stoops, Saban, Tressel….
I mean, I know (from personal experience and comparison) that the Ohio public education system is better than Florida and other states with high populations. But why does that state produce so many cagey coaches?
My values: I love my wife, admire my dog, and believe very deeply that Bobby Bowden and Paula Dean were separated at birth.

fiesta, i meant to hit "reply"
but football is so big and so important there. and contrary to what many think, ohio state isn’t the only school in the state; they’re only 2nd to Texas in terms of number of D-1 (or FCS) schools in the state, which probably makes it easier for young coaches to network and get more quality experience sooner than most can.
I think all interviews from now on should be done as a group
with Coley, Trickett, and Hudson
