Florida State Receivers Coach Lawrence Dawsey Discusses The Issues
In a interview posted on AC's Chopping Block, Lawrence Dawsey, FSU's receivers coach and passing game coordinator gives us confirmation of some of the changes we predicted and have been discussing here at Tomahawk Nation for some time, and his views on what is occurring within the football program.
Some of the topics Dawsey discussed include his role as the new passing game coordinator, the lack of misconduct by the players, the improved academic support structure already in place and the academic standing of this years recruiting class, the new strength and conditioning program, the priority on getting back to concentrating our recruiting efforts in Florida, some results of the new fourth quarter drills, how defenses have changed since his playing days, existing players and some new recruits expected to make an impact, new wrinkles on offense, and what we can expect to learn from the upcoming Spring Game.
Some of my favorites quotes from this interview include:
Jimbo’s playbook "hasn’t even been scratched yet,"
"National Championships were won recruiting and playing kids from the state of Florida,"
and how during the Spring Game
"The defense is going to get lit up" (with a big smile),
which may or may not be a good thing.

Thanks, Frank
Pure Jimbo right here….
A strong defense will make everything better for the FSU offense as well. When Dawsey played he had to go up against Deion, Leroy Butler and T-Buck every day in practice. The heated practices made everyone a better football player.
Also, I love the Unity Council. Dawsey made it sound like the leaders would be ordering ‘Code Reds’ if anyone gets out of line. Good stuff.

Who ordered the Code Red?

That is pure football, not pure Jimbo
the quote was about when Dawsey himself played, under Bowden. That is how all good programs are and have been like for decades.
Also, the unity council idea is good, but not totally original either. Hopefully the players will not let their buddies slide for issues.
I liked that everyone from the 2010 class
will apparently qualify.
Also, that they’re paying attention to grades so they can catch little problems before they become big ones.
My favorite part, too, is:
Jimbo’s playbook "hasn’t even been scratched yet."
Watching the games, you could sorta get the feel that he was holding back on his wizardry of offense, but this is just confirmation.

I'm not sure I buy it; think it's good coach speak
Jimbo has some reverses / trickeries in his book which we’ve seen a little bit. But it seems that, at the core, his offense is multiple formations, execution / detail oriented, emphasize QB’s read ability pre and post snap, run the ball when appropriate. His offense screams the process-oriented philosophy. While not “conservative,” you can bet that Jimbo is all about playing the percentages.
Watching his offense at LSU though
you saw some different things because of the different types of players he had. I think bringing in a more diverse group of athletes (physically speaking), it should open up more options for him

I think he if he really gets Dawsey's input we will see some deeper vertical
passes thrown into the mix, provided the receivers show they can get open in between the coverage down field. The O line with our QBs’ scrambling abilities should buy enough time for some bombs.
there were some nice passes over 15 yards here and there
but taking away the ones with big yards after catch I do not recall lots of actual deep passes.
Dawsey likes his chicken spicy
Q: How has playing wide receiver changed from when you played in college?
A: There’s a lot more zone and disguised blitzes now. When Dawsey played it was pretty much straight cover 2 and cover 3. Now there’s a lot more film study to find tendencies in players on the defense, such as a player leaning when he blitzes and such.
It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee
I think he was being paraphrased there.
I don’t think he was pulling a Jimmy and talking about himself in the third person.

This was another reporter giving Dawsey's responses
but that was the first thing I thought too. “JIMMY’S DOWN!”
I'm sorry I just have to ask....
Why did it take a new head coach to implement all these needed improvements…academic support….nutrition…strength and conditioning…needed position coaching changes…etc?
Complacency is a state of mind that exists only in retrospective: it has to be shattered before being ascertained.

Same reason
that its better to tear down an old building and build a new one, than it is to bring the old building up to code

You need to have a redesign because familiarity breeds a kind of complacency.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
A leader who confines his role to his people's experience dooms himself to stagnation.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
The greatest enemy of progress is not stagnation, but false progress.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
When a great team loses through complacency, it will constantly search for new and more intricate explanations to explain away defeat.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
Because making those chancges acknowledges that something was wrong for about a decade and making them begs the question
“why am I still here if all the changes are from the new young assistant?”
Like the defensive coaches refusing the mental conditioning.
Do you know why the defensive coaches didn't want the mental conditioning?
Are you saying it was a pride issue?
Fisher is obviously handling the administration well
Think about it. You do not get all this additional support for free. He has told the people with the purse strings, you want to win, we need these things, regardless of cost.
Next up: Indoor Practice Facility. If not for the economy they could probably be closer on that one too.
My favorite quote:
“The Unity Council was created so players answer to their teammates, rather than the coaches for minor behavior issues, such as missing class and workouts. Ther’s a point system in place, and after so many, the rest of the team decides the offending player’s punishment.”
At long last…accountability
