Preview and Game Thread: NC State Wolfpack vs Florida State Seminoles, 9pm EST
N.C. State Wolfpack at Florida St. Seminoles, Mar 12, 2010 9:50 PM EST
Editor's Note: Sorry for the short preview, work has been consuming and this is all I have time for. Sorry it's up so late as well.
Mirroring the ACC regular season, the ACC tournament has already featured a number of upsets: NC State over Clemson, Miami getting two wins and Virginia snapping its losing streak. Tonight, the Seminoles have the opportunity to make up for a serious black mark on their conference schedule. NC State is 4-1 in their last five games including wins over Wake and Clemson. They are playing much better than they had in the middle of conference play. They are happy to play a down temp style of game and play great defense. Like the Seminoles, the Wolfpack's defense is their strength.

F #42 Ryan Reid (6.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg; Averaged 4.0 pts and 2.7 rpg in the 2009 ACC Tourn)

G #22 Derwin Kitchen (8.3 ppg, 3.9 apg; Averaged 6.3 ppg and 6.0 rpg in the 2009 ACC Tourn)
Keys to the Game:
1. Get out to a good start. Duke came out slow. VTech came out slow. Do not give NC State any confidence.
2. Work the shot clock to get good shots early. Get good looks and make them count. This is going to be possession basketball. Do not waste any opportunities. Wear NC State down; they played late last night, take advantage of fresh legs.
3. No surprises. Don't let Scott Wood put up 31 points on you. No surprise heroes on the night.
4. Play to their weakness. The don't rebound well on the defensive glass. They allow a lot of steals. Hopefully the Noles will turn those steals into easy points in transition.
5. Great guard play. NC State is one of the bigger teams in the conference. Snaer, Dulkys, Kitchen and Loucks need to have a good game. Javier Gonzalez, NC State's point guard, is only 5'11. Don't make silly mistakes. NC State does not generate a lot of turnovers, so don't give them any advantage.
6. Do what you do well. If NC State doesn't shoot the ball well, they're in trouble. Florida State is one of the best teams in the country at defending shots, particularly in the paint. Focus on your strengths and play your game plan, not theirs.
Prediction: Seminoles 67 NC State 60

and dont look now, but GTech is up 34-19 over Maryland, 1st half.
GaTech looks crisp and efficient on offense. This ACC Tourney has been a surprise from the first game of round one. Even Virginia played Duke tough today.
All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
maryland's shots just aint falling. GaTech's are. 38-19 now.
All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
Would we rather face a team we've beaten twice this year or a team we've lost to twice?
There seems to be a big retribution factor built into those matchups.
Didn't help us against Duke last year.
That’s all I know.
"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."
yea, lets just play whoever we have to play next. my preference for GaTech was a
mild preference.
All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
I want
to see Maryland, i would like to personally be the ones to knock Grevias out of the tourny. Our D is going to be tenacious. We will be swishin n dishin, runnin and gunnin, The X man will be moving with mobility and agility, Snear will be slicin and dicin to the hole and fininshing. needless to say excited about this game.
And talk about Number One seeds having it easy
Duke gets UVA followed by Miami to get to the ACC finals?
yea, hows that happen? maybe Marquette can come back against GTown over at the Big
East Tourney, help out our resume.
All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
Don't think that's a knock on Duke
or any “easier”, per se, than facing Wake or VaTech.
"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."
*sigh*
For some reason, ESPN360 thinks the game starts at 9:30. I may just be angry for half an hour.

GaTech has been doing everything possible in the 2nd half to give the game to maryland.
turnovers galore, and badly missed free throws.

gatech got away with one on that slam. definite shot clock violation

badly missed three pointer by vazquez there. poetic justice

even better hahah
vasq whiffing the winning shot
no doubt. the whiny overreaction was the icing on the cake. what a
great start to our evening.

We can advance to the semis tonight with a revenge win,
… and it looks like the Crocs will lose to Miss St. (down by 9 and under 5 min.)because seriously, F&%$ those guys anyways.
Don't really want

All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
How fitting that Vazquez...
gets stripped and launches an airball in 2 of his last 3 possessions. I delight in his failures.
Clearly a foul onthe three
Ref swallowed the whistle.
by FtLauderdaleNole on Mar 12, 2010 9:25 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Could have gone either way, actually.
Before the “strip”, Vazquez had a clear pushoff and the defender put an elbow to Vazquez’s throat.

The stripped 3?
I don’t have the luxury of DVR but it looked like it could’ve gone either way.

Path is clear for us to get to ACC title game. Let’s do this.
by FtLauderdaleNole on Mar 12, 2010 9:26 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I expect a heck of a game
Should be close and physical. Love seeing Vasquez exit. Let’s hope our Noles avenge that home loss from this year and get a step closer to another visit to the ACC tourney final. we can show a lot of progress starting tonight.
Plus, I hope the gaters lose to MSU. Down by five with 35 seconds to go.
LOL. are they in or out, though?
All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
Lunardi still has them in.
Of course, the fact that the field is so weak across the board doesn’t hurt. Even in basketball the Gators have to back their way into any postseason success.

Dayton, you gotta be sh***ing me!
Up 56-42 with 13 minutes to go and you blow it? Typical UD ball this year. What an utter disappointment of a season. Disgustingly disappointing.
Anyways, let’s bust some heads tonight.
"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."
I had a feeling you were not going to be happy with that, Trick. The technical call was a
little cheesy. Miss St won, GaTech won. Dayton may have just blew their chances.
All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
Yea, that definitely finished any hope I had.
No way they deserve a bid now. Pathetic. Just g.d. pathetic.
I could’ve seen a double technical and an ejection on that. But Lowery had to get called for something. He swung at the guy.

Well him trying to pass the ball into the post is like watching Porky Pig at the end of a Looney Toons show. On that last one it should have been an alley-oop to Singleton, IMO but he hesitated, and then had to attempt an awkward shot. The one before was nice though.
I would need to see a replay.

PJ with a nice entry pass. Alabi went straight up and slammed it home. Alabi had 2 guys backed down on the entry.

I thought we had shown some improvement but the coaching job for this one screams incompetency.

Wood 6-8 from 3 tonight.
That shot was a bit more difficult. Good d and like 4 feet behind the arc.

Going 0-2 vs a team that didn't sniff the NCAAT would suck.

How many times are they going to talk about Wood's 1st game against us?

I dont even have time to make a post about a bad turnover before we commit another one

Or a loose ball we have and somehow just don't pick up and NC State gets it back.

Only down 5.
Feels like 20. Seriously. 17 turnovers. 3 points in last 4 minutes.

Apparently Hamilton needs to put these guys through some basics.
#1. When 10 ft from another player, you do not need to launch the ball like you’re Nolan Ryan.
If I weren't an ACC fan and I flipped this game on
I’d think it was like the NCAAT’s play-in game of two 16 seeds, but for the ACCT. That’s how g.d. awful both these teams look.

This has got to be the ugliest game I've ever watched.

great job,boys

Yeah
The seed doesn’t really matter when we play like this. We get to go and embarass ourselves again on National TV.
Sucks.
yep. at this time, I WANT an 8 or 9. That way, if we do win, we get a 1 seed in game

I actually wouldn't mind that.
But you saw us against Duke. They’re a 1.

good point. I mean, you know damn well as much as I do...this team aint going
anywhere in the Dance. We might as well look forward to a possible match-up with a #1 seed in the 2nd round. What else can we look forward to?

baseball season?
I doubt we make the 2nd round; I see us matched up with one of the “hot” teams in the country, like ND
we probably wont make the 2nd round. right now, I just hope they ship
us out West again, so I dont have to take time off of work to watch this garbage.

god i’ve never seen a seven footer miss so many easy shots my god, play gibson….alabi my goodness you are the most aggrevating player to watch ever!!!!!!
A decent team would have pulled this one out
Glaring weaknesses on offense. We play like lazy undisciplined fools.
we got beat twice by NC State. Twice.

Good News: With the win, NC State's RPI will probably rise over 100

its gonna depend completely on who the committee matches us up with.

For me...
I am still satisfied just getting to the tournament. I am very much aware of how frustrating and difficult it has been for us the past several years so I appreciate doing it again, twice in a row.
However, next year, we will have no excuse but to AT LEAST win one game in the NCAAT, but this year I’m just glad we made it.
Absolutely Horrible
Great game luke louks! Put the ball on the floor again Solomon! Great game plan Ham!
What a GIANT fucking step backward.
LL
It wasn’t LL’s fault we lost. He has actually stepped up the past several games, and he was never supposed to be any more than a role player anyway. The other players are the ones sucking ass. CS is a freak, SA is a freak. These guys have been playing TERRIBLY.
MS and DK all of a sudden can’t pass or hold on to the ball. EVERYONE WAS DREADFUL. At least DD and LL didn’t turn it over.

I’ve said it for a long time listening to all the bullshit about Alabi being a lottery pick this year…“when it’s all said and done Gibson will make a lot more money playing basketball than Alabi ever will.”

They get plenty of individual coaching.
Players DO improve during their time here. AJ, Toney, Al, all improved. Rich improved. Swann improved. Alabi, believe it or not, has improved since he first stepped foot on campus. Improved a ton, actually. His ceiling is just not nearly as high as his 5* ranking by Rivals. Players improve, the offense does not.

Would
somebody please remind me again why we can’t find a better coach? We have to be the worst offensive team in the tourney and quite frankly it’s embarrassing. We couldn’t run a set play if our life depended on it, shoot FT’s like 8 year olds and this team has made zero progress since the start of the season. I don’t care what the stats say. There isn’t a word in webster’s to describe the offensive ineffectiveness.
i agree, middle school kids can shoot a better ft percentage than us
by phi*tau-nole on Mar 13, 2010 12:13 AM EST up reply actions
You cannot knock the free throw shooting
when the 3 prior years we were amongst the best in the nation at it.
"Trick is right."

I know that I love FSU basketball, I know that now I am drunk(ish), but.....
….this team, despite the fact that they finished 3rd in the ACC…still manages to embarrass the s@!t out of me every time they are on TV. They couldn’t even secure an easy win against Miami last weekend, they had to give up a 15 point lead to win by 1.
I don’t even want to watch the 1st Round next weekend, because chances are they’ll lose to Winthrop or some BS like that. This loss really sucks. So sorry for the stream-of-consciousness; I just can’t believe that a team this talented can consistently let games like this get away from them, and always at the worst time. We can’t even win “pretty.” Glad we were able to beat UNC and Wake while they were down….
How much more evidence do people need to see that Ham is a bad coach
It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee
by RaysnNoles on Mar 13, 2010 12:48 AM EST via mobile reply actions
I often wonder if it’s his fault or the fact that none of the coaches on the staff can seem to coach an offense. To be sure that is partly Ham’s fault because he put the staff together but it doesn’t seem like it should take much effort for FSU to have a semi-competent offense. I would like to see Stan Jones (as I believe he draws up our plays) replaced if when next year looks similar to this year.
hopefully
alabi will grow a set this offseason…..hes gotta be the weakest big man ive ever seen ……….
If we are relying on Alabi to "lead" our team
we are in trouble. He is not that type of player mentally. Nor is he good enough physically.
"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."
I'm with you on the free throw shooting, Trick. I mean, 9 of 17 last night was horrible,
and probably a reasonable percentage would have meant victory, but its hard to knock the FT shooting, or put into in the “Things To Worry About Column,” when there are myriad other things on that list and the fact of how good FSU FT shooting has been in the past.
Now, on to Alabi. B-rod24’s short, succinct post above got me thinking…maybe Hamilton should start Gibson? We need all the offensive help we can get, and it seems Alabi’s only real, consistent skill on offense is his free throw shooting, and that doesn’t seem to make up for his deficiencies.
All is not lost; the unconquerable will/And courage never to submit or yield.
I think playing more would get him into the flow
of things better on defense and likely cut the fouls down some. But I do agree that’s something he needs to work on. But if he fouls out, next year we’ll have Alabi, Kreft and James to replace him.

Was really painful to watch last night
There were a couple of turnovers that were just complete miscommunicaiton. Our defensive intensity and prowess usually is on display but damn the offense is so painful to watch.
It wasn't just turnovers
It was missing a gazillion 3’s and FT’s. How many times did we step out of bounds? How many times did we just give the ball away? That game totally sucked
There is no reason why Chris Singleton should ever shoot another 3 pointer.
Guy is a hawk on defense, but dearly lord, stop chucking 3’s. Also, learn to make a FT. He’s shooting under .500 from the FT line. That’s Shaq bad.
SCALP 'EM SEMINOLES!
It's a team-wide epidemic this year.
Kitchen was marginally better. Alabi was much better. So was DeMercy, actually. Loucks, Dulkys, Reid, Gibson, Singleton are all substantially worse.
