FSU Spring Practice Update For Wednesday 03/24/2010
Here is the FSU SID's release recapping the sixth day of spring football practice.
While Florida State's defense remains very much a work in progress, the sixth session of spring football practice produced a variety of big plays from a unit that is still in the early stages of grasping a new scheme. Leaping interceptions by linebacker Nigel Bradham and Jeff Luc, sacks by ends Markus White, Brandon Jenkins and Dan Hicks and a run-stuffing backfield drop by tackle Jacobbi McDaniel marked signs of progress during Wednesday's practice.
"The defense is starting to get things down," FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said afterward.
Midway through the second week of implementing coordinator Mark Stoops' new plan, the defensive players are decidedly upbeat.
"We had some moments today where you could see the whole defense as a unit pretty much working together," said Bradham, the top returning tackler. "We had 12 plays straight with the (starters) where we had everything right. It's just the chemistry. We're communicating more. We're starting to learn our checks and adjustments."
One of those adjustments helped Bradham make the play of the day, a leaping interception of a Christian Ponder pass.
"We were in our base defense and I dropped back toward the weak-side hook (route)," Bradham explained. "Two wide receivers were coming across and I just read it right. I knew he was going to come inside some, so I cheated inside a little bit and just read the quarterbacks' eyes." The ball was thrown behind Bradham, who reached back with his right hand and pulled the ball down and into his chest as he hit the ground.
There was a lot of whooping and hollering in celebration; perhaps a sign of the contagious nature the new defensive coaching staff has brought to the program. "[Coach Stoops] is very, very enthusiastic about his job and what he is doing," said White. "He knows he is here to coach us and that is what he makes sure he does. Even in the meeting room he is jumping around and making sure he is getting his points across."
"It reminds me of high school at Lowndes," said cornerback Greg Reid. "The intensity here is great. Everyone is coming together and we are just working really hard."
Fisher attributes some of the excitement and enthusiasm to the players getting a grasp on the new system.
"They like what they are doing," Fisher said. "It's different for them. The first couple of days they were used to playing so much man. Now they're mixing man and zone and learning their drops and where they have to be and have got to do. You can see some guys that can run and make some plays. You can see their false steps are starting to go away and can see them gradually getting better and better."
One of the players who has caught Fisher's attention is rising junior free safety Terrance Parks, who is running with the first-team defense. A seldom-used reserve who has battled injuries for two seasons, Parks appears to be flourishing in the new scheme.
"I am pleasantly surprised and in a good way," Fisher said. "He is getting more consistent. He can run and can cover some ground. He plays with his eyes pretty well."
Parks has been rejuvenated with the arrival of the new staff.
"It's a real good feeling to be out there," said Parks, a one-time cornerback who has bought into the safety position. "[Coach Stoops] expects a lot out of me and I feel like it's my responsibility to know what I'm supposed to do and what everyone else is supposed to do. "It's been a long journey and I really appreciate where I'm at right now. I appreciate it, but there's nothing given to you. You've got to earn it."

"He knows he is here to coach us and that is what he makes sure he does."
Translation: Certain past coaches were here for their own personal agendas and didn’t prioritize coaching.
Holy football boner, batman!

In a game situation, that could mean 3 or 4 punts. Whoda thunk it?

Let's have a round of applause
For the SID’s improved spelling and grammar performance this morning.

Good to see that Greg Reid thinks we're now practicing at a high school level of intensity.

That's either a sad commentary on our old practice habits
Or a sign we really need to pull more guys out of Lowndes than we already do.
I think he was referring to more so the enthusiasm displayed by his high school coaches and how they made it fun for them!
Coach Stoops
Is anyone else glad to hear how the players keep mentioning how much enthusiasm and energy he has? After his interviews and signing day presentation, I didn’t really expect to hear this.

He's more comfortable now so his personality can come to the forefont
Not to mention he’s in his element (coaching). If players take on the identity of their coaches, we’ll be just fine.

I am thinking about how other teams will scheme against our newly implemented zone
I imagine there will be some opponent game plans and growing pains centered around our new found ability to pass off coverages to the next defender. We will found out soon enough how much our young warriors have learned.
This alone ...
… will help our defense. That is, even if our execution sucks, having multiple looks for which the opponent must prepare will make it more difficult to move the ball against us.
teams will run..
more draws and screens. You’ll probably see more motion against us as well as more coverage beaters. Flood routes, lots of hi\low stuff, probably see alot more air raid stuff coming our way. Passing game wise the zone doesn’t really change up what teams call, just more where they attack. In theory it should eliminate the deep ball.
A very popular play to exploit both man and zone is levels. Also EDBS reported that you are more than likely to see UF run that play.
You’ll prbobaly see some smash routes and all curls.
Here’s a nice article on attacking different coverages.
Thanks for the links.
I love this site, and if I hang around long enough I may actually acquire some in-depth knowledge.
Seminoles.com
Seminoles.com seems to be doing a pretty good job lately of covering sports and posting videos. Have they always done this or is it a relatively new thing. I have been paying more attention lately but it seems like they are posting more frequently. They also had the warparty and signing day coverage.
And no, i’m not comparing seminoles.com to tomahawknation. There is no argument to be made there. Just saying they seem to be doing a better job lately.

Young mind in charge of the machine
Can’t see the old staff getting behind the idea of trying to control the flow of information digitally. I can see younger coaches doing it though. Great way to gain control over the face of your program. No stupid quotes getting out from the players. No loaded questions either.

It's a cesspool of garnet & gold koolaid
They’re not going to tell you that the defense sucks. Last year, they were practically declared Jamie Robinson the next Ed Reed.
Oh no!
Are you saying preseason reports are not indicative of how things will turn out for the defense? Get out of here lol
I'll bet
His shoulder ached a little bit just thinking about that prospect.

I can't do it
I gotta keep my expectation level lower…..I mean its good to see the offense isn’t throwing up 650 yards in a half of a scrimmage but we are so brand new I gotta keep that in mind. We are going to have some growing pains…..But I feel really confident that this team will be really good as the season progresses.
"You play to WIN the GAME"
Good words-to-illustration moment
“We were in our base defense and I dropped back toward the weak-side hook (route),” Bradham explained. “Two wide receivers were coming across and I just read it right. I knew he was going to come inside some, so I cheated inside a little bit and just read the quarterbacks’ eyes.”
I’m thinking the right-side graphic “Twin open,” Bradham at M covering the curl route. I think I was most excited to hear him cheating toward the inside and reading Ponder. I don’t know if he anticipated the route (more likely in the right place at the right time (right coverage call)), but it appears he understands underneath coverage and shading/cheating.

we are running an over front...
thats an under front shown. Sounds like he recognized what was coming from the way he talked. This is going to help CP look off guys. I think we we maybe were running our stick concept where the TE runs an out\sitdown and a slot runs an out with a vertical clear by the outside WR.
Not sure, but we're missing a Safety...Rover? And if so he's aligned over the wide-out?
Might be a poor graphic choice
R is the Rover
This looks like a cover-3 man adjustment for the same thing Graig Cooper beat Kendall Smith on last year. I-Twins Left – TB Motion out to flanker. The “rover” by definition acts apart from the rest of the defense in order to neutralize opponent strengths or attack opponent weaknesses. In this case The Rover, Corner, and SAM can act together in having the deep boundary, curl, and flats. It also prevents having a CB with deep zone responsibilities being matched up against a RB in a quick screen scenario (easy yards). I don’t particularly like this defense but it beats putting a LB out on an island.
In my opinion
If anything that corner back would be standing outside of the D end pretending to blitz he would then buzz to the flat and the Rover would be dropping out before the snap to take his deep 3rd. The Sam backer wouldnt take such a hard line to the flat he would drop more vertical to curl. The Mike back would drop on a small angle towards the two reciever side. Its just a picture so you cant see the game that would be played but that alignment wouldnt ever look like that pre snap.
Also
They might roll coverage towards the two reciever side. That corner would squat the Free safety would roll towards him the Rover would rotate to the middle and the corner to the rovers side would drop to his deep 3rd. The Rover obviously wouldnt be down that low he would be sitting at 10 yards ready to roll at the snap of the ball. Also that would change the drops of the Mike and Will backer. Mike would drop towards the TE and Will would drop towards the middle of the field.
The reason for all of this is because in most offenses our pre snap read tells us where we are most likely going to go with the ball. When you change that as the ball is snapped it forces the qb to change his read, thus making him bring the ball down or misreading it and throwing into coverage.
I like rolling coverage too but this defense is technically sound.
You are right in that the CB would never be out there. In order for the Rover to be where he is here, he would have had to have been “taken” out there (ie motion out of the backfield). The corner would obviously stay just outside the end continuing to give the look of man/corner blitz. (If you’re not interested in disguising zone then you leave your corner out there and keep your safety underneath for better run/pass balance). Maintaining a disguised man alignment is key here. The presnap read in this situation is man cover 1 motion side or cb blitz. He will be expecting a FS roll opening up the TE or slot (LB coverage) over the middle. Funny thing is this D is strong in the middle with the backers dropping and FS having total freedom to read the QB. If the QB takes the bait, he’s finished. Weaknesses include strong side square in and basically anything weakside (but again we are expecting the pre snap read to take the QB mid-field to strong side).
hopefully this will keep reminding Ponder not to lead the defense with his eyes.
And yes, it was awesome to hear about Bradham’s thought process – logic and analysis.

Jeff Luc with a int
He picked off a heisman contending qb but too bad hes too stiff and sucks in pass coverage.

Agreed
His lack of fluidity leaves a lot to be desired. And who is this Ponder guy anyway? He’s probably not very accurate at all.

They both better watch out
I heard there is a coaches son who was the best QB in Florida that enrolled early who might take their job this year.
Don't forget
The lefty redshirt freshman QB that was also recruited by QB guru Bobby Petrino. I heard he was the sleeper to be the starter.
That was always a rival fan's 'response'
to when Jeff Luc was brought up about him committing to FSU. “Oh we didn’t want him anyway, too stiff and sucks in pass coverage.”

One idiot UF fan
seriously tried to make the argument that he is much slower then he looks and so stiff that the only position he had a shot at would be DT!!! I asked him what he thought BEFORE JL committed and of course received no reply.
A bright spot in an otherwise crappy day
Thanks TN, I love this site…. I can count on you guys to make my day. The people who post on here rock, as well. Go Stoops! I’ve got morning wood in the late evenin. Boiiing!

safety..
I hope these boys at safety can stay healthy cause it sounds like we are an injury away from being screwed. It appears as though we can rely on Parks, Moody and Demps but after that its a crap shoot. Disappointed that Harley just can’t push through and get over some past injuries. This change to zone defense could save Justin Brights playing career, he’s an intelligent enough kid so he should be able to pick things up. Will help hide his physical limitations also.
