TN Logo - Fan Art Contest
Hey Guys! ... I'm Not saying that theres anything wrong with the current logo Tomahawk Nation has, but what do you guys think about letting the fans have a shot to create a new logo for TN? Fans would create a logo, and the best ones would be narrowed down, selected (by the guys who run the site) and voted on by the fans/readers to takeover as the new official logo for Tomahawk Nation.
As I said - nothing wrong with the current logo, but I think there are probably a lot of creative fans out there who could come up with something real nice that would be better than what we have now. I checked out most of the blog sites from SBNation (The Father site to Tomahawk Nation), and I didn't see one logo with the schools official logo/character/font, and I am therefore assuming that SBNation doesn't allow anything official - but in my opinion, that makes the contest that much more interesting. Once again, No offense against the current logo (or whoever created it), but I think we can do better, while at the same time having some fun with this thing. After checking out some other teams' SBNation blog sites, I think we can come up with something real creative to make our logo at TN stand out.
What do you guys think (the readers) ?
And, what do you guys - The Guys who run the site - think about it ?
After the Jump (I always wanted to type that) I have attached some
logos from other blog sites which hail from our father site, SBNation.
Alot of these guys get creative and have some pretty good ones. I have posted some neat logos from some well known programs, along with some from our rivals....
Miami's SBNation Blog site is called 'The 7th Floor'
UF has Aligator Army
Thee Ohio State University calls their site 'The Buckeye Battle Cry'
The Defending Champs' blog site calls itself 'Roll 'Bama Roll'
LSU has an interesting one, as they call their site 'And The Valley Shook'
And I'll end with one of my favorite logos - I think NC State takes the cake with their site 'Backing The Pack'
Thanks guys -I'd love to have everyone's opinion !

I like your idea
And I agree. The logo isn’t horrible, but it would be cool (and a pretty fun way) to find a new logo.
Yeah, I think the process in itself would be the fun part
and the end result-getting a real cool new logo-would just be a big perk
criteria
Working in marketing and having just run a contest like this for my client, I deal with logo’s and intellectual property (copyrighted images, etc) a lot and have a couple comments as I think this could be a cool idea to see what the people could do.
1. Set a deadline for entries, and a place for people to send them. Might even just want to create a simple gmail account just for this that people can send their designs to, and then you can post them on here in a gallery for folks to vote on, or the heads can just choose themselves, as it is their site after all…
2. Regarding current logo’s, there cannot be any use of any copyrighted imagery, so no using Doak, the FSU logo, etc… Anything submitted has to be of public domain or created by that individual.
so that’s just my two cents.
I concur...It makes me nervous.
Like I’m either fixing to get screamed at, or hit on.

There was a new logo designed and it is on the back of the TN T-Shirts
Even though you can’t see the logo too clearly here, this will give you an idea how awesome it really is.

and
http://www.tomahawknation.com/2009/8/1/972079/saturday-update-new-t-shirt-options
It was designed by K-Man’s fiance Stacy, with input from some of us. I bought 3 of them and love them, however as of right now, I do believe the T-Shirts are no longer available. That is something the K-Man could answer best. The only change I would make is on the front, the TN, since I have been asked on more than one occasion by idiots if it means Tennessee.
I am only posting this to let everyone know that there is a new logo, not to promote T-shirts that are not currently available or for everyone to start bugging K-Man for shirts.
Only Bud can answer and decide if and when our current logo will be changed. But if anyone were to ask me, I think logo we designed for the TN t-shirts, would be the way to go.
You really can’t see all the little details from this photo, but it at least gives you an idea what the logo looks like.

i recently moved and havent found the proper facilities/equipment to reproduce the shirts within driving distance.
Complicated process and story, so I’ll spare you.
I concur that the front needs to change. The initial thinking was “TN” would become a conversation starter allowing the person to explain Tomahawk Nation to the inquiring party. It’s time to slap the whole name or more on the front.
I continue to tell people “I’m working on a solution” and that’s still the case. This venture is a net-loss operation for me, so I’m not moving heaven and earth like the first go-round.
In regards to my engagement, that’s a very exciting event in a young man’s life, Frank. And great news! Looks like I’m off to Zales this afternoon to make things right!
by The K-Man on Mar 5, 2010 12:52 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
BEWARE OF ZALES!!
If your putting decent money into the ring, get as good a warranty as you can get. I had to have them replace, not just repair, my wife’s ring even after having them replace some of the diamonds perviously because when we went to get it cleaned it would come back with diamonds missing. Keep a close eye on the integrity of the ring whenever you send it to them, don’t let them replace some of the diamonds with poorer clarity either. Of course, if you are only buying a ring with a single large stone, you may not have to worry about it as much. Just thought I would provide my experience so you may not have to go through it.
Anyway, congrats!
"I am the way, the truth, and the life...no one gets to the Father but through Me"
I feel bad for the inside humour.
Frank is constantly teasing me, the fiancee thing is a hoax.
But I do appreciate the consumer advice now and always. I’ve always been leary of the name-brand jewelers that hire Ruby Tuesday defectors to sling their stones. I plan to use a recommended local jeweler in the event is profess my undying love to a woman.

2010 ~ The Year of the Spear
I knew the request for shirts would start by my posting that comment, and again that was not my intent. I just wanted to share the awesome logo that was designed last August with those of you calling for a new logo for the site.
The K-Man does not need any more additional pressure with the upcoming birth of his first child just days away. K-Man, I would suggest holding off on Zales for today and instead going to USA Baby or Baby Depot to finish outfitting the baby’s room of your new dwelling. Ooops, there I go again, sharing private information on a message board and possibly hindering your “playa” status. (Antonio Cromartie envies and is jealous of the K-Man)
The K-Man is not in the t-shirt business and while we appreciated the effort, the time spent, and money lost on the first go around, if and when he is able to work out the details, I am sure he will let us know.
However, since you asked for suggestions for the front, if and when any progress is made, I suggest you go with the same “racing stripe pattern” with just Tomahawk Nation printed inside the lines.
Finally, I did not intend to let the cat out of the bag with your intentions to propose, I thought you were going to do it on Valentines Day like you had told me, but I understand how some women don’t like walking down the aisle 8 1/2 months pregnant. I also understand the baby takes priority for right now, and rest assured I can keep your secret that you now intend to pop the question after the baby is born and on a April 1st, for obvious reasons.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
I'm sending away for a prototype from somebody in the region I found today.
I’m a control freak when it comes to the finished product, so I won’t be collecting orders until the prototype meets my standards.
For the record, the “racing stripe” on the front is from a piece of Native American pottery in a museum. There’s several intimate, subtle touches that went in to the logos. Like I said, suggestions for a new front are welcomed.
Frank, I’d like to sit here and fire back for spilling the beans on my private life, but I just don’t have the time. Between the midnight Lamaze Classes and prepping the house for the in-laws, I’m just burnt out lately. You’ve got it coming to you, though.

Just a thought.
You should consider posting the original image, not the picture of the T-shirt, so everyone who hasn’t seen them will be able to see all the subtleties in the design, that the picture of the T-shirt I posted above does not give justice to.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
K-Man, to be honest.
I really, really like them just the way the are. I’m usually really crusty on ideas like this, but I do like the way they look. Well done.

The problem is most variations of FSU are either trademarks™ or registered trademaks® , along with many other variants of the name, logo's, and symbols, and subject to licensing, rights fees, and royalties.
We investigated learned that you can’t use any of the FSU logo’s, and many of the names associated with FSU, Florida State, and Seminoles, or you could have infringement issue. The K-Man personally knew someone who was contacted by the FSU lawyers and threatened.
Anything pertaining or posted on this site must not be in violation of any of the trademark or registered trademarks of FSU. The last thing anyone of us wants is legal attention for having an inappropriate Tomahawk Nation logo.
Here are some examples of what you cannot have.
http://one.fsu.edu/community/Document.Doc?id=599
What is a Trademark?
A trademark (or mark) is any logo, symbol, nickname, letter(s), word, slogan, or derivative used by an organization, company or institution to identify its goods/services and distinguish them from other entities or competitors.
*
Any reference to the University or trademarks adopted hereafter and used or approved for use by Florida State University shall be subject to the policies and procedures of the Office of Trademark Licensing. Additionally, any derivations of the University marks which would cause consumers to erroneously believe that the product originated from or was sponsored or authorized by the University shall also be covered by the trademark licensing program policies and procedures.
Who Needs a License?
* Licenses must be obtained for the use of any FSU trademark, image, or photograph used on any packaging (including hangtags, stickers), signage, or product sold to the general public or to campus departments and organizations. In addition, promotional licenses must be obtained by companies or organizations wanting to associate with the University through any use of its trademarks.
Florida State University does NOT approve or endorse the use of its marks in conjunction with alcohol or tobacco related products, illegal or illicit activities or substances, firearms, religious affiliation, or political affiliation. Florida State University does NOT approve designs on behalf of any third party right’s holder.
Basically, you can’t even print a t-shirt with just FSU and sell them, without running the risk of legal troubles.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
correction
The person I know wasn’t just threatened, they were slapped with hefty fines.

Ya, I was thinking of actual logos later on
.. and thought ti myself. Wow I cant use this logo, cant use this clip etc etc. So I completely understand how hard it must be to get what you want out of the shirt.

by numberonenole on Mar 6, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions
That's a bit misleading the way the university presents it.
It begins with a generic and broad definition of "trademark’, much of which is inapplicable here, then talks about how it will protect its “trademarks”.
FSU certainly has not and cannot trademark the name of an Indian tribe, even if that is FSU’s “nickname.”
I also seriously doubt that it can trademark the name of a public institution like Florida State University, or initials like “FSU”, for several reasons.
It can trademark its original creative works like its Indian head logos. It has copyrights on the photos it has created.
But it has neither copyrights nor trademark rights on the photos anyone else takes of the buildings or campus.

Should definetly update the old logo with the new logo…nice job! Maintains the tradition but updates the look (kinda like our new coaching staff). BTW, where and how can we purchase the T-shirts?
i need to get one of those shirts for sure
And if the new logo is already set, then I guess we are a little too late for this…it will be cool to see somthin new though, but as I said- the contest in itself would have been cool

Looked for an e-mail address but couldn't find it.
One of my best friends is in the “t-shirt design” biz and would probably be willing to help out if a supplier is the issue you are running into. I think the shirts are cool. if you sent me files with the design I could ask him about making some more. He is not a FSU fan but he is a neutral bystander. Sabotage would not be an issue.
I also have a few free months before I go back to school and I am driving my wife crazy with not much to do.

I have some ideas but Bud would probably ban me. Nobody thinks my stuff is humorous but me.

" Fisher’s approach to building a winner is lifted from Saban’s playbook. Right down to the terminology such as becoming more "process oriented" as opposed to "results oriented."
" Nick and I are friends," he said. "That guy is one of the best football coaches I’ve ever been around. God knows he’s brilliant. … A lot of the things he believes are a lot of things I believe. We’re very similar!

Yeah right Doc!
Even some gators probably think your material is hilarious.(even when they’re the butt.)
How bout this?

I sent this to Bud a few months ago, but my guess is he didn’t like it since he never responded… This is just a mock-up. If there was interest I’d spend some time on it and really spruce it up. I designed this having in mind a logo that would easily translate to different mediums, i.e., t-shirts.
The current T-shirt is alright, but it could be better. Speaking personally, it’s a little too “Tommy Bahama” for my liking. I was aiming for a shirt that gets you pumped for a game, something that screams “there will be blood!”

one more look at it...

Here’s a crisper looking version. But like I said before, it could be a lot better, it would just take a little time to play around with it.
And thanks K-man. Don’t get me wrong, your fiancee appears to be very talented. I like the shirt, but I’ve just been dying for one that brings back the “scalp ’em” mentality.

no offense taken. different years equals different designs.
I make an underground FSU shirt every year on the side for myself. Is that logo 100% your creation? It has a powerful brutality presence about it. (Though it could use some Viagra. Talk to your doctor and see if Viagra is right for your tomahawk)
We could tweak that design a few ways and have something great. Doesn’t have to be just 1 TN shirt.

maybe change the font
or go with a TN interlocked like the FSU logo resembling this

im pretty sure they can’t sue for font.
believe it or not...
even font is protected by copyright. But in this case, there isn’t really a font per se, it’s just a design incorporating 2 similarly styled letters. Should be able to duplicate this style in other letters without a legal problem.
by Scalp'emLikeuMeanit on Mar 7, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions
We know what you mean, and not that it matters, but it is not a copyright, it is a trademark.
A copyright is used to protect original works of authors, music, intellectual property, etc, while a trademark is a word, name, symbol, etc used to distinguish goods and services.
As I pointed above, FSU has trademarks and registered trademarks associated with all verbiage pertaining to FSU, Florida State, and Seminoles. You can see for yourself what is protected here under the section for verbiage.
http://one.fsu.edu/community/Document.Doc?id=599
So technically, you cannot use any of those words.
I am not trying to be a Debbie Downer, just trying to save you guys time so you don’t go drawing up something that is not allowed.
For example, you cannot make up logo’s, T-Shirts, etc, to use or sell with just FSU on them regardless of the font or color.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em

yeah the star will be back, just didn't get to it yet.
I’ll work on it a little more later today. The hard part is the blood… It’s tough to make it look good and still maintain the shape of the US. Just filling all the colors with G&G, like in the first two, might still be the way to go.

Suggestion.
The feathers detract from the drawing. I would move them to the bottom of handle just before where the butt (white part) starts and hang them by a cord, or leave them where they are but hang them by a cord like in your first two drawings.
Just a suggestion for your consideration.
