Do we want the ACC tourney 3 seed as of now?
Looking at the standings going into today (3/7) the Noles are in line for either the 3 seed or the 5 seed. If Clemson wins today we are the 5 and if they lose we are the 3. Most people say that it is important to have the day off and only have to play 3 games to win the tournament. While I agree with that logic, I am arguing that this year it may be better for us to get that fifth seed.
If Clemson wins we will be on the Duke side of the bracket and we will have to play Thursday, but we will probably open with Miami or NC State. I know we just played UM down to the wire without their best player and lost to NC State but I think both of these are very favorable matchups. Should we win that game we would then play VT, a team that we have already beat and while it will be tough to beat them again our defense is good enough to shut down their scorers. From there it would most likely be Duke then the winner of the other side of the bracket should we make it that far.
If Clemson loses and we grab the 3rd seed, which is a tremendous feat for the young Seminoles, but we will most likely open on Friday with Clemson or Wake (not sure how their standings shake out). Clemson has beaten us twice already and Wake is a tough match up. If we win that game we would most like play Maryland (who has beaten us twice) and then more than likely Duke.
5th seed: NC State/UM, VT, DUKE, Winner of other side (my bet Maryland)
3rd seed: CLEMSON/WAKE, Maryland, DUKE (my bet to get out of that side of the bracket).
There are a lot of ifs and things that would need to happen right for it to shake out this way, but I believe the 5th seed (as of now) may present an easier road to advance to at least the semis without a day off. From there it would be a crap shoot because it would be tough against either UM or DUKE.
This was just a thought I had and something I found interesting. What are your thoughts? However this plays out and we will know today, Go NOLES.

We're going to have to beat the best at some point,
I’d rather take that shot when our players have some legs beneath them.
This.
Not only is finishing 3rd in the ACC just better than finishing 5th, but if we finish 5th we’ll have to play 4 games in 4 days if we make it to the Finals. It’s only 3 in 3 if we finish 3rd. And that “extra win” we’d supposedly get by getting the 5 seed won’t help us any in NCAAT seeding. It just doesn’t make sense to want to lose, which, to me, is what Clemson winning would be.
"Trick is right."
I want FSU to get the 3rd seed.
I would much rather see FSU play Clemson and Maryland, two teams they should have beaten.

I believe that if Wake beats CU
they are the 5 seed b/c they’d be 1-0 against CU. In the context of your argument, I am good with probably playing CU first with them having tired legs. Remember, the press wears down the pressing team, also. A chance to beat them allows us to exorcise some demons and makes a clear statement to the NCAA selection cmmte that we should be seeded ahead of CU in that tourney. You have to look at it as an opportunity.
Outside the context of your argument, I think it would be huge for this team to finish as the undisputed no 3 in the ACC this yr. And we would be b/c we beat VT, played a tougher non-conference and conference schedule, have a better RPI than them, etc. That also should compel the NCAA selection cmmte to seed us higher.
We absolutely want the 3 seed
I would love to see both Clemson and Maryland again. They both beat us twice, but it is difficult to beat a team 3 out of 3 chances when both teams are pretty evenly matched. Also, a loss to either of those teams wouldn’t hurt nearly as much as a loss to the 12 seed, which this team certainly is capable of.
Also I do not want to see FSU play Miami or NC State
Our young team has not handled success well. A Miami or NCSU team with nothing to lose could be big problems for a Seminole that is a lock to make the NCAA tourny. I could easily see a one and done with a 5th seed.

just wondering
wouldn’t we be a 4th seed either way since we beat Virginia Tech? Sorry, I’m not familiar with the tie-breaker rules
From what I have read here on TN...
The tie-breaker for three teams is based on the record of each team vs. each tie-breaker team.
A.) Clemson has beaten FSU twice but lost to VT, so their record would be 2-1.
2.) VT has beaten Clemson and lost to FSU, so their record would be 1-1.
D.) FSU lost to Clemson twice and beat VT, which makes our record 1-2.
That is how the seedings would go in a 3-way tie.
That is why the Clemson game was so important.

Ooops.

I like what you all have said
and I especially agree with finishing third alone in the ACC is a huge testament to this team and program. Do any of you think that if we get the 5 seed and win at least the first 2 games it will improve our seeding and location (closer to home) in the NCAA tourney; whereas, winning one may not effect our position as much?
You have to be a 4 seed to expect to get a location close to home.
Even then, the odds are against it, seeing as 4 seeds get last preference. Most have us an 8/9 seed and the only way we get to a 4 is if we win the ACCT and get a ton of help in other conference tournaments. It’s just not happening, so that “extra win” won’t do anything for us, plus, it’ll be against a lousy team, so it’ll mean nothing regardless.
At this stage, it’s WHO you beat, not HOW MANY you win.
"Trick is right."
To clarify, seeds 1-4 get first location preference.
All other teams just go where ever their pod “leader” goes.
Pods are made of 1/16 and 8/9, 2/15 and 7/10, 3/14 and 6/9, and the last of the 4 types of pods is 4/13 and 5/12. Those 16 pods (4 types of pods for each of four regions) get sent to 8 different sites (2 pods per site).
"Trick is right."
No, he didn't
We would get 3, VT gets 4, and WF ties with CU at 9-7 in conf. Who wins tie between WF and Clemson?
Okay. Sorry about that. Yes, you are correct about a Wake Forest victory.
The Clemson site Block C is stating that Clemson will be a 6th seed with a loss today. It looks as though this is a HUGE game for Clemson in terms of ACC tourny seedings.

Thanks for that
That would mean that if they lose today we get them on Friday assuming they win Thursday
For Clarification:
If Wake wins:
Duck
Mary
FSU! (head to head 1-0)
VaTech
Wake (head to head 1-0)
Clemson
If Wake loses:
Duck
Mary
Clemson (3-way 2-1)
VaTech (3-way 1-1)
FSU (3-way 1-2)
Wale
He also said "Wale".
Didn’t notice it before. The rapper?
Miami is clearly the goose.
"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."
One other thing that nobody here mentioned as of yet.
Let me preface this by saying that Trick is right above when he mentioned that winning a first round game against a weak team in the ACCT is not going help our NCAA Tourney seeding at all. The only thing that might affect our seeding would be actually getting to the ACC Championship Game.
That being said, remember that the #5 seed involves playing at 2pm Thursday, then 2pm Friday if we win. For anyone that works, thats gonna suck, especially if you are considering take time off the following week to go to the first/second round NCAA Tourney games (as I am.)
On the other hand, the #3 seed doesnt play until 9pm friday, which means no work issues, and a fantastic little happy hour before you head home to watch the game.
Thus, the #3 seed its gonna be.

No ACC tourney games during work hours, or the employee will be given a free vacation day.
"FEAR is just the Opening ACT!!!" Coach Coley
and might I add that we were the #4 seed last year.
A better seed this year? Who would have thunk that prior to the start of the season?

Happy to get a piece of either NC State or Clemson.
Didn’t think we’d go 10-6 or finish 3rd, though.
Whomever this idiot (the host) at halftime of the Loyla Marymount/Gonzaga game with Jay Williams and Doug Gottlieb is…well, an idiot. Just introduced the Clemson/Wake Forest highlights with, “And a matchup of two bubble teams…” prior to both of his co-hosts interrupting him and saying no way. The guy replied, “Really?” with his voice getting higher pitched like it’s prone to do when you ask a question in surprise. His co-hosts correctly said both schools are in.
They also said that if uf beats Auburn in the 1st round of the SECT, it doesn’t put them in the field. Said the 2nd round matchup with Mississippi State would be an elimination game for them both. uf has the better resume to date. I’ll be rooting for the War Tigers since I personally think a uf win clinches a bid for them.
Ah, the guy’s name is “Brian Berg” or something like that.

TC Did...not to toot our own horn here at TNation...I will revist the rest of my predictions once all of the end of season awards are out.
Here was our projected order of finish. Some major major misses, a couple of close ones…but we got the one that counts right.
1. Duke
2. North Carolina
3. Florida State
4. Georgia Tech
5. Clemson
6. Wake Forest
7. Maryland
8. Miami
9. Virginia Tech
10. Boston College
11. Virginia
12. North Carolina State

well, I stand corrected. Thats one hell of a prediction! Impressive, indeed
Had I been a member of TN at the time, I would have guffawed at such a brash prediction.

It was a result of countless hours of calucations, protractors and pencil pushing...just kidding. Was a bold pick..

Very true.
The number of opposing basketball teams they made look good is inversely proportional to the number of pre-season predictions they made look good.
Oh and as to the Number Three seed?
As the nice young lady in the song says: You want it, baby you got it.
the 3 seed worked
out well. We got a day off then NC State and hopefully Maryland instead of UM then VT then Duke. Plus if we meet up with Maryland we get another chance to shut Vazquez’s trash talking butt down. Man i dislike him
