Team Gold Wins First Tomahawk Nation Florida State Spring Football Fantasy Draft
Recently, our members participated in the Tomahawk Nation Florida State Spring Football Fantasy Draft. Some of our authors got together to help judge the teams and declare a winner. FSU44 wrote the most compelling argument, which appears below.
Shaded comments come from Tomahawk Nation author "FSU44".
When I first sat down to write a recap of the Spring Fantasy Draft and declare my "winner", I realized this may be the single least objective, semi-serious article ever posted on TomahawkNation. Commensurate with the occasion, I had every intention of writing a humorous, detailed recap. However, I had work and three different WNBA fantasy drafts to blog about, which has altered that plan. Undeterred, I pressed on.
First of all, conventional wisdom dictates that the way to draft players in this draft, and thus the way to win, is to pick the players whose reciprocal shows the biggest drop off. Or conversely, to end up with players whose drop off is slight or nonexistent from the other team's reciprocal player.
With that said, Christian Ponder obviously had to be the first pick, and due to an editor error Toshmon Stevens would likely be the last player chosen, on the thought that the drop off from Ponder was the greatest, and the drop off from Stevens was the least. Conventional wisdom held true. As it turns out, Jenkins should have been in the "Get" category all along, and Gold picks up a steal by virtue of their draft position (and what was surely their plan all along).
Not to mention that some believe Ponder's arm is stronger this year than last year. That is the big advantage for team Garnet.
Team Gold never had a chance at Ponder, and thus, is free to complain that if Ponder has a typically efficient scrimmage, it is only because they had the advantage of picking first. The thing is, Team Gold doesn't need to complain, because in my view, they have the superior team overall, for the following reasons:
I was torn, but I agree with FSU44 here. Gold is the slightly better team.
1) Running Backs. As it stands right now: Thomas>Jones. Thompson>Pressley (the comments that he may be the fastest back on the team not withstanding). While Pryor is more versatile than Smiley, Team Gold has a big back to use in short yardage. Didn't FSU's defenses give up 8 yds/carry in the last scrimmages? I like the Triple Threat posed by Team Gold on the Ground.
I'll add that Thomas and Thompson are much more consistent than the streaky Jones and Pressley.
2) Stopping the Run. Point 1 feeds into Point 2, which is stopping the Run. Jacobbi McDaniel v. the walk-on center Jacob Stanley is a huge advantage, and I like McCallister over McCloud, given the fact that Amp hadn't played football for over a year prior to a few weeks ago. Can I just point out that only in a Spring Fantasy Football Draft would anyone think of taking McMahon over Hudson or Datko? That is the beauty of fake fantasy football.
While I am not so sure about McAllister over McCloud, the McDaniel point is huge. With McCray injured, McDaniel is the one potentially dominant interior lineman in this game. Team Garnet has two 3-technique type tackles. Team Gold has one nose guard and in McDaniel has a player who would be the best at nose guard and 3-technique. Team Garnet is likely to have trouble all game and immediately must double McDaniel on every play.
3) Nigel Bradham. Beastmode versus situational passer rusher in Mister Alexander. I like Bradham to have a huge game, and a huge season, which is he stays healthy and productive, will probably be his last.
I don't particularly think team Garnet's linebackers are much worse than team Gold's (1 starter v. 2 starters), but I absolutely think team Garnet's linebackers are ill-suited for its defensive line personnel. Examine:
Team Garnet's DL + LB = 1712 lbs. Team Gold's: 1807 lbs. (All weights per Spring guide and both are probably heavier now by an equal amount). That's almost a 100 lb difference and that is really, really big. Team Gold is set up to run the ball. Team Garnet is ill-suited to stop the run. Uh-oh.
4) Defense as a whole. Considering last season, having the better defense when you split up FSU's best defensive players isn't necessarily a recipe for success. But with a lot of the other units as a whole being a push, Team Gold gets the nod.
Team Gold has 8 of the 11 defensive starters and has the aforementioned 100 lb advantage.
5) Quarterback. My understanding of the rules is that Ponder only gets 50% of the snaps. Say Team Garnet Runs 66 offensive plays total. That is 33 snaps for Ponder. I don't see him throwing the ball more than 15 times. This game will be won on the ground.
This is where team Gold was smart in drafting Trickett and giving team Garnet the walk-on.
Conclusion:
Ponder throws for a couple of touchdowns early, and Team Garnet decides it will work on running the ball. Team Gold surges back, running the ball right at the second team front 7 for Garnet. With 18 of 23 starters (per the last scrimmage), Team Gold takes the draft and the very close game, 35-31
Congrats to Team Gold!

Sorry, I forgot to send in my vote
However, I selected Team Gold as well. I spoke for a while with user MattDNole about it, and we believed that it was the correct selection well before this was published. So dare I say it was pretty unanimous across the board.
365 days, until I change my ways.
Congrats Team Gold!
And thanks to the TN hierarchy for coming up with the draft. Gold’s first three picks put us behind the 8 ball. Drafting Trickett was very, very smart.
Team Garnet!
The biggest thing I noticed is that there is not a big drop off from the 1st to second string
Not at RB, WR, DE or DB, at least.
We have pretty good 2-deep depth, especially on offense.
Speak softly, and carry a big Spear
I will concede that we lost as well.
I completely agree that we whiffed on the DLine. Drafting Jacobbi McDaniel was the best move by Team Gold and Team Garnet’s downfall. Having McDaniel, Hudson, and Datko would have put us with the best DLine and two best OLine. You win the war in the trenches.
Team Garnet!
did you see that lamarcus liked my status?

Then again my evaluation of football talent is pretty much non-existant
It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee
I called this halfway through the draft...
Team Gold was brilliant, and I concur. You can all rest easy now.
In all seriousness, that was fun to watch the banter/analysis back and forth. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to see this next year!

As Captain of Team Gold, you can mail the trophy to me at...
Semi-seriously though, this was a really fun way to destroy my daily productivity. While I was ambivalent about drafting Trickett so early, I am certainly glad we did now. I hope we can do some more of these types of activities in the future.
GO GOLD!

My boss just settled right on the eve of a trial with 1 billion documents
and he had floor space for the first time in a year. I was literally stomping around in their this morning, talking about space to do activities. I’m not sure he picked up on the joke.
Oh man I was all over
Trickett….The only thing I think we could have maybe done was datko instead of Bradham but hey we did well none the less.
Team GOLD
I think it would be cool to try this again, (informally of course)
Only have Ponder play QB for each team, it’s just such a big dropoff from him to Manuel.
If anyone wants to do one with me just reply. We can do it by email or something
I'm tdchrisdavis, and I approve this message
What's wrong with streaky? I'll a take an AD Mac type of RB.
10 yds in 4 carries & then bam rips a 50+yder. I’m ok with that. lol
GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!
Everything.
That is exactly what FSU does not want.

Gaining 3.5 yards per play for 30 plays might equal the same (105) as having 20 plays of 1 yard and then 10 plays of 8.5, but in the context of what is best for the overall offensive performance the advantage of a consistent grinder allows for better down and distance.
This has been referenced elswhere a while ago on the site… I’ll try to search for it.
When people think of the streaker running backs and how they like them, I think they are thinking of the ones that consistenly do it, therefore reducing the number of of the “busts” in the “boom or bust”

Check this out. Masterfull. Specifically, RB is about halfway or 2/3 down the article.

I disagree that any of them are streaky. They haven't had a chance to prove one way or another.
All of the RB’s could & can play. I want our guys with size & speed to play. Mainly Pressley & Thomas. They are the two oldest too. Pryor at FB will be on the field a lot & Smiley on short yardage. Bring in Jones & Thompson when the others need a breather.
GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!
I OBJECT. I THINK TEAM GOLD SHOULD BE DISQUALIFIED FOR TRYING TO PULL THAT FACEBOOK SH*T.
To me, that sounds like something a Herban Liar run team would try to pull. {;-0)
Old, slow, and dangerous, but still serving a purpose.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
mt the one avobe lol. Ty didn't play much last year. He looked pretty damn good in the bowl game vs Whiskey though.

I think "streaky" is the word that best defines Ty. Very good at times and ineffective at others.
Pressley was similar, although we haven’t seen much of him healthy, so I’ll lay off of him.

He looked good for a moment against USF
Then he got caught running with his head down and BOOM, fumble see ya later.

Average isn't a great indicator
Median is better. Scrimmage stats are bad too. But I do hope TP plays well this year. Love the competition we have back there.
>>---l>
Right
But ypc isn’t the best stat. Because I can have a back that runs 10 times for 5 yards a piece for 50 yards. Or I can have a back that runs for 1 yard 4 times 2 yards 5 times and 1 time for 46. Back A has 5 ypc back B has 6 ypc. Back B has a higher ypc but Back A gets me a first down every other time he touches the ball. Bud has shown this repeatedly. Median carry is much more important then ypc.
Team GOLD
Nigel Bradham
= Beastmode. I actually saw him like 20 mins ago and asked him how the spring game was going to be and his reply was “its goin be good” With a huge smile… Seems like the players are having fun again.
Team GOLD
Most Definately
I walked past a dude that was as tall as I am built like a rock with Gold teeth. Even If I didn’t know his face I’d instantly know who he was….walking around in socks and flip flops with a Gold Grill.
Team GOLD
Lmao! Good ole socks & flips-flops (not the ones between the toe though)
That is a str8 up a Tampa/South Florida thing. Bradham is reppin to the fullest! :)
