Florida State Seminoles Recruiting Board 2011

Welcome to the Florida State Seminoles Recruiting Board.  This is an effort by Tomahawk Nation's recruiting writers to provide you with a look at the prospects who Florida State is pursuing and who have significant interest in Florida State.

This is not an official recruiting list and the information does not come from Florida State.

Florida State will offer over 175 prospects in a recruiting cycle, many of whom do not have interest in Florida State.  We will focus on the prospects who are most likely to be in the class.  Recruiting is a dynamic process and we will add and remove prospects from the board with regularity.  Current recruit ratings are guesstimates as to what the major recruiting services will do.   Any opinions expressed on this page are solely those of Tomahawk Nation's recruiting writers and not necessarily those of Florida State University.  Special thanks as well to EliteScoutingServices.

Please refer to 2011 Recruiting Needs for more info on how many prospects FSU will likely take at each position.

As of now the class is projected to be between 21-25.  As is typical during a coaching change, attrition is expected to be close to double-digits.

Here's a projected breakdown (again, this is not official):

QB
1-2 RB
1-2 WR (2 if FSU loses Easterling, Wade, Alexander, and Fortson before 2011)
1-2 TE
4-6 OL (If 6, one would be a greyshirt)
4-6 DL (likely 2 DE & 3 DT, depending on Jamar Jackson's status)
2-3 LB
5-6 DB (6 only if the 6th is a stud)

Refer to the Org Chart/ Roster to see which players could leave the team (and why).

And yes, we still have the recruiting map.

Updates to Board:

  • 2012 DB PJ Williams commits to Florida State. 07.24.10.
  • Removed DE Ricardo Williams, OL Mike Matulis, DT Chavis Atkins, DB Cortez Davis. 08.12.10.
  • Arrington Jenkins added. 08.31.10.

Discussion:

Please discuss recruiting in the recruiting discussion thread.

Quarterback

With Christian Ponder leaving after this season for the NFL, the 'Noles will look to take one quarterback this season, as they do every year.  Jimbo Fisher is considered a QB guru.

Running Back

First, please read about what FSU looks for in a back.

Need:  Florida State will take a back in this class, but will take two if the second player is a superstar.  FSU can be quite choosy with its backs this year.

With that in mind, let's look at the backs FSU is recruiting.

James Wilder Jr.

Plant HS (Tampa, FL)

6"2" 225

Rivals 5-star, #3, ESPN150 #8

All 120 D1 Teams

Wilder is one of the, if not the, most known about prospect in the country for this cycle. One of the 3 best players in the state, and potentially the best. Also, his size and frame are the prototype D1 football player. As a RB he is still able to use the elite level athleticism. He runs north to south and finds his cut very quickly., he has good hips. With very good competition he is able to run over, drag, and run by many defenders at the high school level. His power is unquestioned, however he isn’t particularly shifty, and isn't asked to show the type of vision that he is probably capable of (shows at second and third levels). Runs behind his pads well, and could be a huge advantage in blocking. Wilder is the type of player that around which a college builds its offense. With that said, he's an even better prospect at linebacker. But he wants to play RB and running back is what FSU is recruiting him as. Son of former NFL player James Wilder.  Film. |  Film 2  |  Film 3 (sophomore highlights) |  Film 4  | Film 5  | Film 6

Tight End

The 'Noles will likely take one tight end

Nick O'Leary

Dwyer HS (Palm Beach, FL)

6"3" 225

ESPN150 #22, 4*, #2 TE Overall

FSU, UGA, Miami

He is an elite talent, without doubt the best TE in the state of Florida and top 3 in the country. Nick does everything on the football field well. He is an excellent blocker. His hands are well above average, making difficult catches regularly. His athleticism is unquestioned (he has scholarship offers for multiple different sports, including lacrosse offers at elite Northeast schools). He plays the game smart, running precise routes and separating in the seam. Great body control and balance. O'Leary is a match-up nightmare for opposing defenses. Too big for a safety and much too quick for a college linebacker.  Think Dallas Clark of the Indianapolis Colts, if Clark was willing to block. UGA and OSU were considered leaders because his parents went to UGA and famously his grandfather (Jack Nicklaus) went to OSU. However, at this point it seems to be a UM and FSU battle and Nick definitely likes both schools a lot.  Film

Brandon Fulse

Ft. Meade HS (Ft. Meade, FL)

6'5" 250

ESPN150 #93, 4-Star

FSU, Miami, Auburn

Fulse is physically impressive. He plays both TE and DE, and good at both, so we had a hard time defining which position to list him at on the board.  FSU likes him at tight end, so here he is. He plays poor competition in Polk County, rarely seeing guys on the field his size and strength but does show the ability to handle them as he should. He is above average athletically, moving well for his size, but doesn’t have great straight line speed. He shows the ability to block with his excellent frame.  He is a match-up problem for safeties but needs to work on his route running and footwork. Many believe that Auburn, FSU, and Miami are all in position to land the player from Polk county. Averaged just north of 13 yards per catch, and has a 3.2 GPA.  Film

Offensive Line

Please read what FSU looks for in an offensive line recruit before reviewing the board.

FSU will take 4-6 offensive linemen this cycle (6 only if one greyshirts).  It is an important class for the 'Noles and FSU's coached have done a great job so far evaluating and offering prospects.

Bobby Hart St. Thomas Aquinas HS (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 6"5" 295 ESPN150 #34, Rivals 4*, #6 OL Overall FSU, Everyone but Texas
Bobby Hart is an elite offensive line prospect and what makes him so intriguing is his age. Hart doesn't turn 16 until August 21st, meaning he is a full year younger than his graduating class and considerably younger than many elite prospects (who are often 19 by the time they graduate high school). Hart is already as good as many of those stud prospects, however, and that's scary considering he is still growing into his body. The slope of his progression curve should be considerably steeper than most other prospects, though he won't likely reach physical maturity during college. His film and performances so far must be viewed through the lens of "wow, this kid is 18 months younger than everyone else." Hart has a tremendous frame. Very long arms and enormous hands for such a young kid. He's high-waisted, however, and must play with better bend. Like many kids his age, however, he sometimes appears to lack confidence and tenacity. More so pushes people around than drives them. Needs to bring his feet consistently to stay with his blocks, but does show the ability to step laterally like FSU asks of its linemen. Pass protection has a ways to go, but he has all the tools to be a 1st round draft choice in 2016 (redshirt, 4 years). FSU can sell that All-American Rodney Hudson is also younger than his class. Hart is originally from up North (New York or Philly). Transferred to St. Thomas Aquinas (school of Richard Goodman and LaMarcus Joyner), from Cardinal Gibbons (awful program), so he should get much better instruction this year. Additionally, at Gibbons he faced a lot of attention because he was by far the best lineman. At Aquinas he'll see more one-on-one battles which should help him showcase his talent. Hart will gain more coordination as he grows into his frame and I fully expect him to play at a lean 6'6" 310 lbs. Perhaps no player will benefit as much from a redshirt. Hart will probably add 4-5 lbs to each bicep alone. Hart shows surprising agility for a young kid with a big body. Has a good GPA and at camps has stated that he really likes coach Trickett. One of the 10 best tackles in the country regardless of age. For my money, only Cyrus (Bama), Collins (LSU), and Westerman (Texas) are definitely better college prospects. I'd put Hart up there with Nebraska's Tyler Moore (as a prospect, not a current player). "I love Florida State, they are my leader." He said his relationship with the staff is "Real good I know the entire offensive staff." When asked about his relationship with the other staff's recruiting him he simply added "Not as good as the FSU staff."   Film. | Soph film | Photo. Will likely want to take all his visits but we feel FSU is his likely destination.

Trey Pettis

Deland HS (Deland, FL)

6"5" 300

ESPN 3* 78

FSU, UGA, Miami, Tennessee

Committed December 1, 2009 (Film in link).  Life-long Nole fan and one of the better linemen in the state. Will never be an underwear model, but as Billy Beane said "we're not selling jeans here." He's a good athlete for his size and is still growing into his frame. Pettis is a good athlete and his family is tight with FSU OL coach Rick Trickett. He plays center in high school but is likely a guard or tackle at the college level. There were some weight concerns (he looked quite obese in the State Championship Game and has since lost 40 lbs), but he looked to be in good shape for Spring ball. Baby-faced kid with a mean streak. Click the link for more info and 3 films. FSU expects him to enroll in January (great thing to get a jump in the college strength program).

Sterling Lovelady

Navarre HS (Navarre, FL)

6"2" 280

ESPN 3* 77

FSU, Duke, Syracuse

Committed 02.22.09  Link is fairly exhaustive and contains film. He has an awkward looking body (not bad just different) that would be passed over by lazy recruiters that didn't look closely at the film of a kid at a school that never produces talent. Lovelady projects as a Center. Nice scouting job by Florida State at a school that rarely produces any BCS talent.. Great name for a career in porn if the football thing doesn't work out. Smart kid. Very athletic with great balance.  Tremendous spring game during which he shut down Alabama commit D.J. Pettway.  Had an impressive camp in Tuscaloosa.

Errin Joe

Lake Gibson HS (Lakeland, FL)

6"3" 290

ESPN 3* 78

FSU, Miami, Michigan, Duke

Errin Joe is a player. Big kid with good athleticism. Finishes blocks well and stays on balance. Joe comes from a great family which is well known around Lakeland. Values his education and has a "thug factor" of 0. Joe has a high ceiling but perhaps more importantly has a very low bust potential. Smart kid and very much fits the profile of a Rick Trickett offensive lineman. Compares favorably to current left guard Rodney Hudson. Dominant when he bends and clearly has the ability to do so. Lots of power when he snaps his hips. Needs to be more consistent out of his stance. Looks top heavy, but that could be his high-set shoulder pads. Impressive feet and really gets his man turned quickly. Film.  Will likely want to take all his visits but we feel FSU is his likely destination.

Jacob Fahrenkrug

North Dakota College of Science

6"4" 310

4*

FSU, AZ, Ark, Tenn, Miss, UCLA

Fahrenkrug didn't have the grades to go to college out of high school, but he is one of the most heavily sought after JUCO prospects in the country. A massive man who moves with the quickness of a much smaller player. Technique is inconsistent, but has all the physical tools. Would battle to replace All-American Rodney Hudson in 2011. Film is very impressive, but it is also grainy and I'm not sure the level of competition he faces in North Dakota. Would have three years to play two seasons. I've heard Distance is not a factor, but we shall see.  Film.

Defensive End

Florida State will look to take 2-3 defensive ends this cycle.

Ray Drew

Thomas County Central HS (Thomasville, GA)

6"5" 245

ESPN150 #3

Every BCS school but Texas

Ray Drew has an elite frame that can hold enough weight to maintain his athleticism at 270 lbs. 6'10" wingspan, enormous hands and feet. He plays with a high motor, practically never comes off the field (even on special teams), and seems to love football. At this point he is much better getting straight up the field as a pass rusher than in run support, but with coaching could be elite because of his size. He should dominate at the HS level in all facets because of his size/strength/speed combination. Grew up a fan of Florida State, friends with Amp McCloud and Debrale Smiley. UGA is considered the biggest competition, with Auburn in the mix as well, has an elite offer list. And Drew isn't any ordinary recruit. He is only 17 years old, but he is already an ordained minister at his church in Thomasville. His faith is extremely important to him. In fact, he had to leave FSU's camp early because he had a previous engagement to preach. FSU's team chaplain told him that as long as he has been at FSU he had never seen something like that. Florida State is the only school (distance wise), however, that would allow Drew to continue to participate in his church during college.

Aaron Lynch

Island Coast HS (Cape Coral, FL)

6"6" 255

ESPN150 #49, High 4* #7 DE

FSU, UF, ND

Tremendous frame and still growing. Excellent strength paired with good quickness, relative to his size. Technique needs work and he gets away with average technique against sometimes-iffy competition. Impressive motor and doesn't often take plays off, which would be easy for him to do playing at Island Coast HS. Definitely a kid who will base his pass-rushing arsenal off the bullrush and complement it with swims and rips. Displays good lateral quickness relative to his size. Projects as a 6'6") 280-295 lb defensive end, like you see in the NFL. Easily one of the best 100 prospects in the country and arguably one of the top 50.  Excellent GPA.  Recently named FSU his leader.

Giorgio Newberry

Port Pierce Central HS (Fort Pierce, FL)

6"6" 257

ESPN150 #75, 4* #13DE

FSU, UF, LSU, UM

"The first thing that you notice about Newberry is that he is big, really big. Going into his senior year at 6'6'' 257 shows a player who is very physically mature and close to defensive end playing weight right away. Coach Fisher has made it known that he wants big defensive ends and this is just another sign that is the case. He also shows above average upper body strength. When he is playing offensive line he is capable of dominating and when he plays defensive line he is able to toss players aside. Part of this is that at the high school level not many players have his size, but he appears to possess plus strength in the upper body. One of Newberry's biggest assets is that he plays well within his defensive scheme. In the video he is asked to do a number of things. To drop into zone, rush the qb, and string the run and he shows exceptional recognition. While this is only highlights, it is very promising that he is recognizing screens, playing different line techniques, and is capable of understanding what the goal of the play is. He has offers from Notre Dame and Duke, so not only should qualifying not be an issue but it also reinforces the fact that his ability to recognize is real. Newberry does have the problem that he stands up at the line and doesn't always play with good leverage, which is a very common problem at the high school level and is coachable, but he seems to rely on his strength. Players who have no business blocking Newberry are able to keep him engaged for a short time before he eschews them and pursues the play. He doesn't seem to have a phenomenal first step (or get off) to circumvent this problem so he will need to take in the coaching to fix this hole in his game. However, Newberry does do a great job of staying with the play. Great job of using his arms to separate, though he needs to do it more consistently.  If he is blocked he gets his hands up, as the play moves near or away from him he finds the ball and moves off of his block to get after it. He has a good motor. Also Newberry shows above average speed for his size when tracking down the ball. It looks like he isn't exceptionally flexible and needs to work on lateral movement, however, he has shown much better lateral movement in camps this spring. Overall, Giorgio Newberry is a player who has a high ceiling due to his size/speed/strength and also the fact that he plays within his scheme and with a high motor. FSU likes him and he has already visited. Further Eval & Film

FSU, UGA, AUB, Tenn

Bell is extremely impressive. We think Bell has a shot to go from outside the Rivals 250 to one of the top 75 players in the country. He hasn't received much publicity until recently, but Bell might be the best player in the Lakeland area. He has a great attitude and really brings it. And he can play. Really well. He's 6'5" 270 lbs with incredibly length and a great frame. Has the ability to play end or tackle, depending on need, but can likely play at 290+ lbs without losing his quickness. Wile somewhat raw, Bell is already a very good player. He's fast. He covers punts. He chases down ballcarriers and blows past blockers. Plays offensive tackle as well for his team and there's no doubt that FSU OL coach Rick Trickett is jealous of Odell Haggins' prospect. Uses his long arms to disarm the blocker and then sheds him pretty well, quickly finding the ballcarrier. Great pursuit and effort. For a kid his size, he doesn't often play too high (almost every HS Dline prospect needs to work on this, including Bell). He's relatively unpolished, however, and his technique could improve. My greatest criticism of this freakish athlete is that he doesn't go a great job of breaking down when addressing a ballcarrier and is often out of control once he gets past the blocker. The competition he plays is a bit suspect and his team is pretty bad (outscored 293-27 by Lakeland, Liberty, Winter Haven, Lake Wales, Auburndale, Sebring, and Jenkins). Even so, Bell is a hard worker who cares about winning. And he's very humble. FSU is very interested and Bell is interested in FSU. Interview here. Film 1 | Film 2

Steward took 3rd place at the UNF Meet with a jump of over 21 feet and he runs a respectable time in the 100 meter dash (around 11.5 seconds). FSU is considered to have a lead over any other school, but probably not over the entire field combined.

Arrington has good size to work with at the LB position. He has great quickness, speed and is very light on his feet. He rushes the passer very well. His ability to drop back into coverage is questionable, as he has mainly played DE in High School. Many college LB played DE for their team at times such as Christian Jones, Holmes Onwukaife, Telvin Smith. FSU seems to be in good position with this Miami prospect.

Just an explosive athlete that could succeed at a number of positions in college. Physically is already built like someone that has been in a college S&C program for a couple years. Good quickness help him have good range. Not a burner, but as is the theme with all of FSU's recruits at the DB position, Brutus is a great fit for a zone-heavy scheme. Better in man coverage, however, than Smith, Hunter, Williams, or Davis. Brutus is merely average against the run at this point, but as he gets into a college weight program that should improve at least somewhat. Offers Corner/safety versatility that FSU is seeking.

6'1 " 190

3* Rivals & ESPN 3* 78

Film HerePryor has impressive measurables for a safety prospect; a physically gifted player. Calvin is considered an above average athlete for the position. He covers ground in the secondary well, takes good angles when the ball is in the air, and anticipates throws well. He uses his size and consistently puts big hits on opposing offensive players; he times players and the ball well using good feet to get to where he needs to be. Pryor plays bad competition but has shown the ability to take over games. Uses his steps in an efficient manner but his hips are stiff so he loses time when turning to run after the ball and his backpedal is far too for his size. Shows the ability for good low end burst as well. Doesn’t always seem to stay scheme specific, taking over games on athleticism and size (easier at lower levels) however has played in man and zone. Lastly, he shows well above average instincts (most important asset to any safety). Pryor seems to be a favorite of new DB coach and defensive coordinator, having visited him multiple times, and having Pryor in to FSU. He grew up a Clemson fan. Also a standout baseball and basketball player for the big bend region.

Wilder’s top 4 in no order are: FSU, Miami, GT and Bama

If Bama pulls Crowell you really have to like our chances. Just can’t see GT or Miami winning a knock down, drag out fight over FSU when it comes to a kid like this.

O-Line will be the strongest group

There are so many talented O-Lineman in this class that fit the Trickett mold and are interested. He’ll get a solid group. This will also be the year that recruits get to see a finished product in Hudson and possibly draft bound Datko. Offensive line is by far my least worried about position this recruiting cycle.

by PSLNOLE on May 31, 2010 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Datko will not be drafted this year.

There are 5 underclassmen tackles considered ahead of him by this NFL expert

With his injury history, he needs all the college tape he can show.

Ray Drew

in my opinion is one of our top 2-3 targets on the board. He will definitely be one of those late commits and probably won’t rush his decision. Everyone wants this kid though because of his size and character. Expect his offer list to have all the big boys listed and everyone will be pushing to land him. Williams and Newberry will probably land in this class, but Drew is the one who has me salivating. And is Ryan Shazier not listed because he is projected as a linebacker?

Williams would be a good addition

But only if we are able to get him along with another legit WDE prospect. Whether that be Drew, Rabasa or someone of that caliber. We seem to have trouble landing quality WDE recruits right now. And while a hual of Newberry (SDE) and Williams would be nice, Williams seems to be more of a developmental prospect at this point while Drew is not only elite but a lot more college ready from a size perspective.

Jesse Hayes is a quick turnaround kid. As in, get a few kids like him and your defensive end position will go through a quick turnaround. He’ll be able to compete immediately, and he is probably more valuable to a situation like FSU because of the dearth of defensive line talent. He’s going to have trouble playing higher than 250 lbs., so his best fit is probably at a hybrid LB/DE position. He could stick as an undersized weakside end, but he would likely be surpassed by other prospects later in his career, at that position.

He seems genuinely interested in FSU, so his trip to Tallahassee will likely tell the tale.

19-23. I think it’s mentioned somewhere up there or in a linked story, but if you’re like me you won’t feel like wading through all that stuff.

Rabasa would be the only other DE i'd think about taking

Not a huge fan of Williams myself, i’d much rather take an additonal DT.(Jerrnigan obiviously or the kid out of Lakeland)

by nappygoat on Jun 1, 2010 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

We would definitely take any on the list.

Jernigan will not be on the DT board that comes out tomorrow. FSU has zero shot.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 1, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd take Williams as a luxury item of sorts or developmental type

But I’d be pissed if we got him and otherwise came up empty in regards to any other top notch WDE. Newberry,Williams, along with Drew or Rabasa? Cool. Newberry and just Williams? Something’s amiss IMO

I have some questions for the recruiting gurus here at TN.

These might be obvious to some people but I’m interested in anyone’s opinions. It seems to me that FSU is being listed in the top group of schools in many of the better players this year. Is it just that I haven’t noticed it in other years or is Fisher successfully selling FSU? Or is it the new coach effect, schools with new coaches getting hype? Maybe a combination of all three.

by NOLE09JON on Jun 1, 2010 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

It's a combination of multiple factors.

We’re no longer recruiting with half of a coaching staff; the new coaches (along with the ones that remained after the change) are known to be very good recruiters (with a few exceptions that are unknown like Eliot) and are selling FSU; and there is increased hype around the program with the coaching change. The biggest factor is probably having a few coaching staff capable of, at a minimum, adequately recruiting players. This has allowed the coaches to cover more areas and players. Jimbo and Coley no longer have to visit each and every recruit (Jimbo actually can’t anymore anyway) cause now we could send Gran or Stoops also.

by nolesblogger on Jun 1, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed, and thanks

I remember from years past, that FSU would be in many recruits (mainly FL) initial interest. Then for reasons addressed adequately on this site (only some of our coaches actually working) that FSU would be dropped when recruits would make their first cuts. Just wanted to hear from other TN members.

how interested are we in aaron green?

since we’ll probably only take 2 backs this class….is he one thats high on our radar?? according to rivals he’s the 21st overall prospect and has us in his top 4….yet there is no mention of him above….

by TheSituatioNOLE on Jun 1, 2010 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

So sad

Tim Jernigan isn’t listed. Besides Christian Lemay his name is the one I am so bummed we have no shot at. I’ve seen him play live a few times and he is going to haunt our backfield in a few years mark my words. And him being rated #45 yesterday on rivals was a joke. Elite talent going Gator ^%@^$^&. Lawrence-Stample is going to be a future star in my opinion. Why no mention of the 2 Wrights? Marquise Wright and Gabriel Wright? Marquise is being recruited by Coley and is coming out for an unofficial.

None of them at this point. Right now, it’s all about placating the subscriber base for Rivals. Their final rankings are the only ones of interest to me, because they’re the ones they actually try to “get right.” They know people only remember the last list.

I don’t have a very high opinion of ESPN, based on what I was told about their evaluation process by other people in the industry. Their list is pretty solid, as far as names go, at least.

No one really pays attention to Scout but I think their list is best right now.

Here's Fishbein's thoughts on Dix:
Ha-Sean Clinton Dix-Dr. Phillips-(Committed to Alabama)-Been watching safeties for a long time in Florida. The best safety prospect I saw come out of high school was Reggie Nelson….Dix is at that same level. He is the best safety prospect in Florida since Nelson. Kenny Phillips was top five in Florida, Willie Downs was top five, Major Wright was top 10….He is better then all of them coming out. He is better then Kenny because Ha-Ha is a bigger play maker, he was better then Downs because of the character issues, he is better then Major because of his coverage skills. Dix is just a special talent.

We have 5 committs to play safety, any thoughts on how that position is going to pan out? As well, Wont we need to get a punter this recruiting cycle – If I am not mistaken I thought Powell is a Senior.

My guess:

CB- Keelin Smith, Tyler Hunter
S- Lamarcus Brutus, Karlos Williams (eventually moves to LB- could really flourish under Hudson)

I maintain that Davis flips back to Clemson. Would love to see the coaches slip Waisome into his schollie, and Waisome would play CB.

Top 10 in the country is more than decent. I don't know what Noles55 wants

there are 5,000 prospects. One Jadeveon Clowney. Unless he’s in your backyard or you have some special connection…

Bama took DJ Pettway, rated as the #29 DE. He a scrub?

by Bud Elliott on Jun 3, 2010 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I said 2 things...

*Newberry seems to be the only kid interested in FSU worth a damn.

*Not impressed with our DE recruiting.

You keep mentioning DE rankings. I think the DE class overall (nationwide) is not very strong and not very deep.

Rabase seems to be solid…..I understand he has visited many times….but I just smell Miami on this one. Not a big fan of Williams….I think he is too small. He needs 40 pounds just to get to be an averaged sized DE. I see Toshmon again.

I am frustrated Drew is in our backyard and it doesn’t seem he has much of an interest in FSU. I don’t blame FSU for this….it is just frustrating.

You mention a few guys FSU has no shot at (Clowney, Pettway)….so I am not sure how that counters my points….in fact…seems to support my points.

Is FSU doomed at DE? No, of course not. Do I think FSU is not doing great at it’s most critical position? I think that is the reality RIGHT NOW. Might FSU pull it out…..I think FSU will. But right now….I am concerned.

Part of my other concern is this…..due to HORRIBLE coaching….I have NO idea if FSU has 7 good DEs on the roster or 0. I just can’t tell.

I don’t think any of what I said is irrational and I am not sure why you got so upset about it. I find it somewhat ironic you are tossing out insults about ‘negative all the time’ when on other websites (theterritory.org) you have a HUGE reputation for being ‘negative’.

That insult is one often thrown at people for just pointing out the obvious and other folks don’t like it. Like you did during the Bobby years……just odd that you turn around with the same kind of smack. Just a bit overboard IMHO.

by noles55 on Jun 3, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he threw out the negative comment because I've never see you say anything positive.

Who says Drew doesn’t have much interest in FSU? He came to like 3 of our home games last season. We have to be top 2 w/ UGA at this point.

He threw out Clowney and Pettway to say that the guys we are recruiting are still very good, even if they aren’t Clowney they are better than a guy Bama took.

supplant Shazier if they both wanted in? Or do we take both (plus Smith and presumably Steward)?

Also, we seem in decent position for some highly coveted guys this year, do you think that makes Jimbo make more roster cuts than you originally thought?

Tony Steward - best LB prospect since Sims ..

Better prospect than Bradham, Luc, and Christian Jones? Wow … what a great pick-up that would be.

by Mahaanole on Jun 4, 2010 10:27 AM EDT reply actions

Definitely over Christian and Luc

Christian was very very raw. Luc is probably close to being maxed out physically already. All three are elite. Steward just gives you the freakish ability to cover guys from the linebacker position. Think Derrick Brooks.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 4, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Great comparison

Jones is raw, but will be a star in my opinion. Luc is the most intriguing. Size isn’t an issue with him, but he needs to work on a few things. Steward is Derrick Brooks 2 in my mind. His angles, athletic ability, and quickness are scary. Landing Steward would be huge.

Quick question for the recruiting guys, if they're still lurking around this discussion

1.) Is there any way to get this thread pinned to the sidebar, so it stays? It’s nice to have recruiting stuff all in one area.

2.) Why does Scout have so many more 5* prospects than ESPNU and Rivals? They have 35, compared to like, 13 or 14 for the other two? I just found that interesting.

Scout is always a lil more generous with the 5* imo

I think this year Rivals wants to avoid ranking someone as a 5* out the gate and then having to drop them to a 4* later. They may be doing the same thing with 4* as a couple of our guys I thought would be 4* are only a 3.
