2011 Recruiting Discussion Thread #2 [Closed]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread.  Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects.  We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker.  Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc.  Amateurs and experts are all welcome.  No question is too simple.  Have a projected class?  That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

Also, please don't fish for information from subscription websites.  Violators will be banned from this thread.

Notes:

  • 2012 K Marshall Morgan is on campus. 06.11.10.
  • Jimbo Fisher camp this weekend. 06.16.10.
  • Rashad Green commits to Florida State. 06.17.10.
  • Removed RB Marlin Lane as he got a Clemson tattoo.  06.18.10.
  • Jacob Coker commits to Florida State. 06.21.10.

FAQ:

1. Are the five-star Texas RB considering us?
Unlikely.  We know FSU is in their top four both, but we don't buy the hype. Malcom Brown will most likely go to Texas, and Aaron Green will likely join his cousin at Nebraska. New article suggests that both still have FSU in their top four. Credit Coach Eliot for his Texas connections getting FSU's foot in the door.
2. Where do FSU stand with Ray Drew?
Georgia is definitely in the lead. FSU is fighting with Clemson and Auburn at this point for second.  Drew was at the FSU camp over the Father's day weekend and spent time with CJF.  FSU will likely be in the process the whole way.
3. What happened to De'Joshua Johnson?

Was not able to qualify for Florida State.  Appears he needed much more work academically than what was represented...
4.  Will FSU take 2 WRs now instead of just Rashad Greene?
This is tricky.  FSU is loaded at wide receiver and doesn't need to take another.  FSU could have as many as 13 wide receivers in 2011.  That's more than optimal and is not a good use of finite resources (85scholarships).  However, this answer likely depends on the future of Jarmon Fortson (could go pro early), Taiwan Easterling (baseball, but when?), and Cam Wade (don't see many non-contributing 5th-year seniors on the roster).  The coaches will be in the best position to determine this, and we are not going to second guess their move here.
5. What's up w/ Tony Steward?

Steward camped at Clemson over the weekend.  Clemson is in desperate need of linebackers because its current crop lacks both quality and numbers.  Plus, Steward's idol is Ernie Sims, who was coached by Clemson LB coach Kevin Steele.  Steward named Clemson his leader following the camp.  Despite this, we are confident in FSU's position with him.  Steward is very respectful and has said good things about everyone.  Clemson will be an underdog in 5-7 games this season and it would be hard to see them land the top LB prospect in the nation from out of state while finishing with 5 or 6 losses.  While we are mindful that Clemson can promise him an immediate starting job playing for Ernie Sims' former coach while FSU cannot (FSU is loaded with linebacker talent), we think FSU is in good position at the present time and that FSU's position will only improve from here.  It will really depend on whether the kid prefers immediate playing time or the better program.

So RB Beverly definitely redshirts

Any chance we may ask him to greyshirt (aka delay enrollment by a semester to allow him 1.5 years total)?

Don't know the kid, but First Coast is in an economically poor part of Jacksonville. May not be able to send himself to school for a year.

Also, I wouldn’t want to hurt our connections there. If it is a numbers pinch maybe, but I doubt it as of now.

If he grey shirts he doesn't go to school full time until the spring of 2012.

So he wouldn’t have to pay for school unless he wants to take a class or 2. He would basically be like an EE for the 2012 class.

Yeah, I'm not sure either.

I don’t think they are though. The point is to push by the start of their eligibility clock so I don’t think they would be required to take classes at all.

If he enrolls in school

he is no longer a grayshirt. Grayshirt applies to prospects that sign a letter of intent in Spring, but don’t report in the fall with their teammates. They delay entry to college until midyear, i.e. January. This means that the NCAA five-year clock doesn’t start ticking until the player enrolls as a full time student, so gray-shirting is really a delayed version of red-shirting. They cannot enroll in college as full time students, can’t receive their scholarship, nor practice.

Maybe it doesn't. Some kids get their admissions to prestigious college

revoked after they fail their second semester of Senior year. Maybe Smith believes that kids become complacent when they have a scholarship spot on a college team. If I were a coach, I would not care like you.

I would think that trying to win a state title would prevent them from getting complacent. And I would understand it in a situation like Luc last year (new or historically weak football school with an elite recruit).

Sorry that was a quote from someone out there. I have the back end quotation mark, not the front end.

From what I see on tape of this kid (very little)…

He looks like Ponder did in HS. Very very good runner, throws behind a bad OL and in a wing-t offense so it’s all waggle/boot. But he’s gained 3" and 35 lbs since the end of last season. He crushed the Mississippi camp and you have to look at a kid with his tools and say wow. I bet he has 15 offers by August 1

Can someone briefly summarize how camps are working this year.

My understanding is that there will be several small ones.. So I assume the guys that are rec’d are going to be divided into several camps.

by marlins44 on Jun 20, 2010 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

It's split into June and July camps

Which gives prospects more time with the coaches because they can camp more often. It also offers more options for campers. And it allows you to pay HS coaches to take the kids up there twice.

Two musings

Both my son and his friend who attended the camp pointed out who they thought the best QB would be. Don’t know his name but they indicated that he is a rising soph and I know his parents car has South Carolina plates.

Next…some coaches were gushing over a kid who told me he is a rising junior from Brevard County. I believe he said his last name is Mays. He is very polite and respectful and he was referred to as the “future” at FSU.

Does anyone know who either of these two might be?

by fsuclipper on Jun 21, 2010 12:24 AM EDT reply actions

My guess is that the Brevard QB is Steven Hughes from Palm Bay

He’s a Class of 2011 prospect with fantastic footwork and scrambling skills, and passes that look effortless and yet zip 30yds.

I guess I should clarify

The kid who I assume is from SC, and my son and his friend said was “amazing” is a rising soph.

The kid who I personally talked to out of Brevard told me he is a rising junior…I am lead to believe he is a receiver or RB. He was called “the future of our program” by a couple of athletic officials who were there. Very respectful and seemed to be proud to be “our future”.

The kid from SC has a hot Mom but I’m not sure that her husband would appreciate this observation…he was there also, taking pictures of the Unconquered statue.

Just trying to clear it up…hope that last comment didn’t go too far.

Bud, FSU recruiting policy question

I know that some schools (e.g., Michigan) uses conditional scholarship offers, e.g., A-F, where an A-Tight End offer is the top TE prospect. So if the B-Tight End prospect commits, then later the A-Tight End prospect commits, the B-Tight End will not be allowed to sign, will need to look elsewhere, etc. Do you know if FSU has these sorts of conditional offers? To be honest, this policy seems required when a school makes so many offers—you can’t accept everyone…

Accountabilty is back in Tallahassee....

by TLHWG on Jun 23, 2010 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Ohio State does not, along with many other Big Ten schools.

This is a point of contention between the Michigan administration and Rich Rodriguez.

Offers are not always committable; however, a recruit will never be kicked out of the class unless there are legal or academic reasons.

So if the B-Tight End prospect commits, then later the A-Tight End prospect commits, the B-Tight End will not be allowed to sign, will need to look elsewhere, etc

This generally does not happen at any school in the Big Ten.

I am ok with it. Brisset was my guy for a long time but I think Coker impressed so much in person that I am in favor of that.

Same thing happened with Holmes last year, and many of us think he will be a fantastic player.

Yeah, I know it was just a jab, I don't mind it

I put my thoughts on 50-100 prospects out there every year for thousands to read. There is no way I will be perfect, or have the same opinion as the coaches 100% of the time. Especially when half the time all I have to watch is highlights, and some opinions from local coaches.

OL Bobby Hart and one more guy.
Correct?

Steward (although I think at FSU he becomes an OLB)
O’Leary
Hart + 2 more OL
DL (likely 2DE and 1 more DT) (since we’re doing a wish list) Drew + Newberry (but Ricardo and Rabasa would be fine by me)

That’s keeping it realistic. Clearly I’d be happy to be sign Wilder up right now.

21 Seems a bit high… hmmm I’ll have to rethink this. Maybe 1 less OL and get 4 instead of 5?

Recruiting

This year’s recruiting effort seems much more “tight.” Not only do we have our class over half filled as summer is just kicking off, but we seem to have done a much better job narrowing down and identifying those kids that have a legit interest in the program. Each position we are looking to fill seems to only have a few candidates but all seem decent and reasonable bets to be Noles. Guess that’s what happens when the entire staff contributes.

Class Size

While position specific size has been discussed handily on this site, I don’t think the issue of class size been addressed directly. Based on last years roster at ESPN, we will have 23 Freshman, 34 Sophmores, 38 Juniors, and 16 Seniors this year. Is that a healthy breakdown by class?

My biggest concern is about the long-term affect of the soph/jr class recruiting bulge

I’m not sure of the magnitude of this effect. It could be trivial. However, it seems like taking too many kids in one-year to meet immediate needs might hinder our ability to recruit the very best athletes in subsequent years. My hunch is that 20-22 recruits per year is the optimal number to maximize our flexibility and attractiveness of the program to recruit the top prospects.

by Cheaptalk on Jun 22, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

all the elite programs "over sign" it usually takes care of itself.

a guy gets injured, or doesn’t qualify, or was simply a miss-evauation.

example: AL signed Dre Kirkpatrick #1CB a couple yeas ago and he’s never stayed healthy enough to get in the regular rotation. He’s getting another surgey this off-season. They are now desperately trying to fill depth at DB. And this is after over signing each year.

by Cheaptalk on Jun 22, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a problem at all

The issue is keeping track of scholarships. I’ve been working on this for 2 years now and believe I have it right. It’s like a snowball. Always have to keep updating or you’ll be wrong. I believe I have it within 1 scholarship, and that is negligible considering the kid in question is a senior.

Predicted Class as of June 22

QB: Jacob Coker
RB: Eric Beverly, Devonta Freeman
WR: Rashad Greene
TE: Nick O’Leary
OL: Trey Pettis, Sterling Lovelady, Bobby Hart, Mike Matulis, Darrell Williams
DE: Ricardo Williams, Giorgio Newberry
DT: Derrick Mitchell, Nile Lawrence, Terry Bell
LB: Terrence Smith, Tony Steward
DB: Karlos Williams, Tyler Hunter, Keelin Smith, Lamarcus Brutus

Keep an eye on: RB/LB James Wilder Jr (UF), TE Brandon Fulse (UM), WR Jajuan Story (OSU), OL Ryan Kelly, OL Errin Joe (UM), OL Markus Jackson (UM), OL Quincy McKinney, OL Jacob Fahrenkrug, DE Anthony Rabasa, DE Jesse Hayes, DE Silverberry Mouhon, DT Chavis Akins, CB Nick Waisome, S Calvin Pryor, DB Cortez Davis, DB Senquez Golson

  • I think Cortez Davis goes to Clemson, hope I’m wrong. If his spot is replaced in the DB class, I think it will be Pryor or hopefully Waisome.
  • I am no longer very confident on Errin Joe. I really hope FSU pulls him, and there’s still a good shot, but I think he will eventually land at UM if they keep the heat turned up. Good news is, this OL class will be among Trickett’s best ever. I think Williams will be available until NSD if necessary.
  • If FSU misses on Newberry, look for Rabasa or maybe Mouhon if he plays lights-out his senior year. I was actually tempted to put Rabasa in, but am holding out hope for Newberry. Other factors that may develop soon might pad this smaller DE class.
  • I like our chances with Freeman as the #2 RB. Have never been confident on Wilder, hasn’t changed.
  • My top three most wanted who haven’t committed to FSU: 1. Steward 2. Bell 3. Matulis

I hope it does, because then we'd win out.

I think what is going to influence him is Cortez jr. Kids are a huge burden. FSU is closer, but CJ Spiller use to do the seven hours up to Clemson from Lake Butler. This staff seems like it can care less about star ratings

I love that. For too long we were just relying on where players were rated.

Guys, at this pace I'm going to be opening up another Discussion thread either tomorrow or the next day.

Loving this discussion we’re having.

If you’ve rec this post, could you do me another favor, and now unrec it so it will fall off the rec’d post sooner? Appreciate if you would. Probably going to start making a habit of rec it to make it stick, then unrec to make it fall of the rec’d fanposts.

Even if it is just smoke

I think everyone should recognize the work DJ Elliot is putting in. FSU made Brown’s top 3 and Green’s top 5. Seriously doubt we get either one but for us to be in the discussion is an achievement.

Will the people on that list please begin to “unrec” the thread so that it won’t stay pinned as long.

Maybe it's just me, but I found it amusing

that you included yourself on the list.

Are we actually in the running for Rasco?

And how would he compare to our other targets?

You think FSU has a better chance with Rasco than Ricardo Williams??

Gotcha

I think Williams is on the commit list by the end of July.

Rasco is from Shreveport so

it’s going to be awfully tough to pull him from LSU…. as well as Bama and Texas.

Accountabilty is back in Tallahassee....
